It’s such a small detail in our homes, and yet it can be so helpful to nail these little tasks down.

Keeping your home neat and organized means that you’ll always be able to find everything you need quickly and easily.

While it can be a huge pain to take steps to keep everything in it’s place, there are a few quick and easy ways that you can make your home look as organized and put together as possible – even if you don’t have much space.

A great option is to always aim to store things neatly.

Keeping your hand, bath and large towels along with your other linens nicely folded and organized means that both you and any guests will be able to find everything needed without causing an avalanche of items to fall out of your linen closet or cabinet.

So how should you fold your towels properly?

The following are some tips for how to store hand towels, bath towels, or any other type of towel you might own, and some step by step instructions for how to fold your towels perfectly every time.

Tip 1: Wash your towels first.

Before anything else, you’ll want to make sure that your towels are clean.

Make sure you wash your towels according to color.

White towels should be washed in hot water with detergent and non-chlorine bleach.

Colored towels should be washed in warm water with detergent.

Skip the fabric softener, as this tends to ruin towels and make them smell musty over time.

If you’ve noticed a musty smell around your towels, you can wash them with baking soda first and then wash them in detergent.

Tip 2: Make sure your towels are completely dry.

That musty smell we mentioned above can happen if you fold and store your towels without making sure that they are completely dry.

Make sure that you check that your towels have dried all the way to their centers before you fold them.

These wool dryer balls are a great non toxic way to speed up drying time and keep your towels soft and fluffy.

 

 

Tip 3: Choose a folding technique.

There are a couple of different ways that you can fold your hand towels properly.

While the cute little designs that cruise ships and the hospitality industry make with it’s towels are fun, they’re not completely practical for day to day life!

I mean, if you’ve seen one towel swan or towel flower you’ve seen them all.

You’ll want to choose one folding technique and be consistent.

Just one consistent type of fold is actually the key here.

This way you’ll be able to perfect your folding technique and you’ll be able to store all of your towels together without them looking inconsistent.

Who knows, you might even create some extra space in your bathroom or linen closet.

How to Fold Hand Towels

Whether you’re folding bath sheets or a hand towel, you’ll want the end result to be neat and symmetrical.

While a rolled towel is the easiest way for larger towels, a pretty spa-style roll might not always be the best way.

Rolled towels tend to be more difficult to keep neat long term, especially in small spaces.

The best folding method is to follow these basic techniques.

 

Step One:

Lay the towel down on a flat surface.

You’ll want to have the tag facing up.

 

Step Two:

Visually establish where the center of the towel lies.

Then, fold the left corner of the towel about two-thirds of the way across to the short side.

Repeat with the bottom edge so the towel is folded from top to bottom.

Step Three:

Fold the right side of the towel over the first third of the way, again, length-wise.

Your towel should now be long and skinny.

Step Four:

Fold the towel in half from bottom to top edge.

Step Five:

Now you’ll want to fold the towel in half from the opposite direction, from bottom to top again.

Note: if your towel is a smaller towel (like wash cloths) it might be easier to fold your towel in thirds for steps 4 and 5 rather than quarters.

TikTok's organization sensation gives us the rundown on how to fold towels the right way.

When Sophie Liard launched her TikTok in 2020, it was meant to be a hobby during the lockdown. The United Kingdom-based creator started out in retail, folding clothes in a department store. Now she dispels handy hacks to the masses—everything from how to fold towels to how to fold fitted sheets, blankets, jeans, delicate knits, and more. After two years at the gig, she has amassed more than 4 million followers on the app, another half a million on Instagram, earned the nickname The Folding Lady and is publishing a book, The Folding Lady, this April.

So what’s the secret to her wildly popular how-tos? She shows simple, clever, easy-to-follow (and quick!) solutions that tackle tidying up without the tedium. It’s the same angle she takes in her forthcoming book, which illustrates how to fold pretty much anything: boxers, pants, socks, bedding, towels, even napkins and wrapping paper. As with Marie Kondo’s folding, the result is a peaceful space with an added benefit of inner joy. “For me, it’s been a great way to take some control back in my life. There can be a real mindfulness side to folding clothes,” Liard says, adding that it can be a “life-changing way of thinking.”

Folded towels for a calming space

Among her viral TikToks, there are two videos on how to fold towels that each have more than 30 million views. “One of my followers saw it on a TV channel in a gas station in the U.S., which blows my mind and was so fun to hear,” Liard says. Her guess as to why they’re so popular? Most people aren’t familiar with the fold she uses, the “ranger.”

Towels folded in this style work well with the best closet organizers and linen closet organization tools, but they can also become part of your bathroom decor when kept out for show. “I think towels have always been stored in a cupboard and only on display in spas, but they are such a great home display to have out for everyone to see,” she says. “Towels make a lovely display in your bathroom, giving a calming spa feel to a space.”

According to Liard, the quickest and easiest way to fold a towel is her “thirds and thirds again” method, which stacks well. But the fan-favorite (and most-viewed) is the ranger. No matter how you lay it out, follow the below steps to get tidy towels in seconds.

1. Lay the towel vertically on a flat surface, tag side up.

2. Fold the short side closest to you inward until it’s two-thirds of the way to the opposite edge.

3. Fold the short side at the top toward the far edge. About a half-inch of towel should hang over the folded edge—it’ll keep the edges of the finished, folded towel nice and clean. At this point, you should have a smaller, horizontal rectangle.

4. Flip the towel over.

5. Fold one of the short sides two-thirds of the way to the opposite edge.

6. Fold the other short side toward the opposite end.

7. Turn over your folded towel to reveal a neat rectangle.

2. Fold the corner of the lower left side up until it reaches the upper edge of the towel. It should create a triangle shape, with the left edge of the towel now at the top.

3. Fold the lower right corner up to meet the upper right corner. The short edge at the base of the towel will meet the longer, upper edge.

4. Turn the towel. Be careful that it doesn’t unfold.

5. Start to roll from the straight edge towards the point.

6. To secure the fold, tuck the point into the edge of the roll.

Does the size matter?

All folding methods work with all sizes. That said, if you’re ranger rolling or folding larger towels, like bath and beach towels, you’ll need to fold them in half first.

What side should the towel be folded on?

Most towel folds start facedown, tag up. Liard’s advice: Try the fold, and really look at the finished product. Is that the part of the towel you wanted to see? If you’re folding a towel with a printed or woven hem, can you see the detail? Once you assess the end product, you’ll know how (and at which stage) to tweak your fold. Detailing, in particular, will require some creativity on your part since it tends to differ from one towel to the next.

Is it better to fold or roll towels?

There’s no right or wrong method here. It’s a matter of personal preference and is dependent on the space the towels are living in—linen closet versus bathroom versus clothes closet—and the aesthetic you want to achieve. Washcloths, for example, look great rolled and stored upright in a basket—they’re accessible and visually appealing. Bath sheets, which are larger than bath towels, look nice and uniform when ranger folded and stacked on a shelf. And they provide nice texture when combined on a shelf display with bathroom essentials like fragrance and soaps.

What is the best method if you don’t have a lot of storage space?

Step by step:

  1. Lay the product on a flat surface.

Chocolate Cream Towel Roll

To make this roll, you will need 2 cream and chocolate colored towels. Fold the canvas in half lengthwise so that one is slightly narrower than the other. Lay the narrow rectangle on top of the wide one. Roll up a tight roller and secure the finished roll with corrugated paper and decorative tape.

Towel Bouquet

Towel Bouquet is very easy to make. For the composition, you will need several single-color or multi-colored canvases, corrugated or wrapping paper, ribbon, box or basket. Roll each product into a roll, securing with ribbons, and place in a basket. Decorate the bouquet with ribbons and bows, strips of corrugated paper in the form of leaves.

  2. Shape each top corner into an ear and secure with an elastic band.
  3. Fold the lower part several times, covering the junction of the ears with the edge.
  4. Fold over the free edges, overlapping one another.

  6. Fold each free corner inward and roll the resulting rectangle into a roller.
  7. Pull the end of each roller into the elastic that separates the head from the body.
  8. Make eyes, nose and tail for the bunny.

Swan

Most foreign hotels are famous for their beautiful reception, one of the elements of which are originally folded towels in the shape of swans. You can repeat this idea yourself, spending quite a bit of time and effort. Such a surprise will be relevant for a gift to the second half on Valentine's Day or on a wedding anniversary.

To make the figurine look as neat as possible, it is advisable to fold it directly on the place where it will be presented, for example, on the bed. To create a figure of two swans, you will need 2 large and 2 small towels.

How it works:

  1. Lay out the large item on the bed.
  2. Visually divide the canvas in half widthwise.
  3. Bend the side corners to a 45 degree angle.
  4. At the folds, start rolling the sides tightly towards the center so that you end up with 2 rolls connected by a sharp base.
  5. Fold the resulting blank into the shape of a swan, where the sharp edge will be its nose, the middle will be its neck, and the opposite free edge will be its torso.
  6. Make wings out of a small towel by folding it like an accordion and placing it on the body.

Repeat exactly the same procedure with the other two canvases, and place the resulting figures opposite each other, creating an imitation as if the swans are kissing.

Elephant

Elephant figurine will be a great bathroom decoration. To create it, you will need one bath towel and one hand towel.

Job description:

  1. Lay out the hand piece on a horizontal surface.
  2. Visually determine the center of the width.
  3. Twist the far opposite corners tightly towards the center.
  4. Turn the resulting figure over and place it with an acute angle towards you.
  5. Turn the opposite side inside out, folding the edge up to approximately half way.
  6. You should end up with a head with ears and a trunk from an acute angle, the position of which you can adjust a little.
  7. Decorate the elephant's face with beads or buttons.
  8. Spread the bath towel in front of you in width.
  9. On each wide side, fold over the edges so that there is room in the middle.
  10. Roll the narrow sides towards the centre.
  11. Fold the resulting figure in half so that the joints of the rollers lie outward.
  12. Place the elephant's head on the torso.

The original figurine is ready.

Crab

To create the crab figurine, you will need one rectangular towel and buttons for the eyes.

Procedure:

  1. Lay the sheet lengthwise in front of you.
  2. Fold the corners of the outer edge at a 45 degree angle.
  3. Fold the bottom part like an accordion, ending at the base of the triangle obtained from the corners.
  4. Wrap the triangle around the accordion at an angle down.
  5. Straighten loose edges.
  6. Attach buttons-eyes to the flat part - the head.

Cheerful crab is ready.

Monkey

Textiles folded in the shape of a monkey will be a great gift for a child or decorate a bathroom in an original way. To create a toy, you will need a rectangular towel, elastic bands, buttons or beads for the eyes.

How it works:

  1. Lay the canvas vertically in front of you.
  2. Roll each side into a roll towards the centre.
  3. Turn the resulting figure upside down.
  4. Twist the fabric 180 degrees, about 1/3 of the way back from the edge.
  5. When folded, the contact points of the rollers must be visible both from the outside and from the bottom.
  6. Separate the head from the resulting torso with a rubber band.
  7. Use small rubber bands to make monkey ears on the head.
  8. Attach eyes.

To make the figurine look more realistic, it is better to seat it.

Bear

You can give a bear out of a towel to a child of any age or to your beloved girl. To make a towel bear, you will need stationery rubber bands, and for maximum realism, various decorative elements (buttons for the eyes, a nose made of dense fabric, a ribbon for a bow). The optimal size of the canvas used is 60x40 cm.

Description of work:

  1. Lay the canvas on a horizontal surface.
  2. Visually measure 1/3 of the length and fold one side.
  3. Turn the fabric over with the folded side away from you, and roll the halves tightly towards the center.
  4. Twist the towel 180 degrees in the middle.
  5. Visually you will understand where the newly minted bear will have legs.
  6. On the opposite side, make a head with a rubber band.
  7. Use the smaller rubber bands to separate the ears from the head.
  8. Tie the colored ribbon around your neck in the shape of a bow.
  9. Attach eyes and spout using adhesive tape.

A practical and useful gift is ready.

Striped Towel Cat

If you have a large striped towel, try making a cute cat. For work, you will also need elastic bands, buttons for the eyes and nose, as well as a textile ribbon for decoration.

Workflow:

  1. Fold the sheet into a rectangle.
  2. Roll the resulting rectangle into a roll.
  3. Separate the resulting roll with an elastic band, separating the head from the body.
  4. Separate the ears and paws from the outside of the head and the opposite side of the body with rubber bands.
  5. Decorate the cat's neck with textile ribbon and attach buttons to the eyes and nose.

Towel heart making tutorial

To make a heart and present it as a gift to a loved one, you will need a rectangular towel, rubber bands, ribbons and flowers for decoration.

Description of work:

  1. Fold the canvas lengthwise 3 or 4 times, depending on the desired thickness of the finished figure.
  2. Put an elastic band on one end and roll it up, not reaching the center of the sheet and securing it with an elastic band.
  3. Repeat the same steps for the second side.
  4. Bend the blade base in the center so that the rollers touch each other.
  5. Tape the structure together.
  6. Pack the heart into the box and place candies in the remaining empty space.
  7. Decorate your arrangement with decorative flowers.

This heart, made from a large towel, will be a great bed decoration for honeymooners or lovers.
