A riding lawn mower is ideal for anyone with a large yard, requiring less time and energy to operate than a traditional push mower. Over the last four years, we've spent hours researching and testing riding mowers from the top brands, evaluating maneuverability, safety features, noise level, and overall value.

Our favorite is the RYOBI 48V Brushless 38 in. Electric Riding Lawn Mower, a stand-out for its quiet operation, easy maintenance, and performance, especially on rough terrain.

Here are the best riding lawn mowers.

What do buyers say? 1,300+ Home Depot reviewers rated this 5 stars.

It may surprise some people, but our top pick is this battery-powered model from RYOBI. The zero-emissions model easily matches gas mowers in terms of power, cutting through thick grass with ease while demonstrating impressive maneuverability. Plus, it's fume-free and practically silent, generating only minimal noise. (Our tester put a similar model from RYOBI to work on her 10-acre farm and was blown away by the results.)

The RYOBI electric mower has a 38-inch deck, and its 48-volt batteries can run for two and a half hours per charge, allowing you to cut up to two and a half acres in a single session. The two-blade deck has 12 different cutting heights, and the mower offers convenient features like cruise control, LED headlights, and USB charging. There are no belts, spark plugs, or filters, making it easier to maintain than a traditional riding mower.

Our only complaints? The seat gets uncomfortable if you're mowing for long periods, and it doesn't have a mulch setting. Still, if you're in the market for a reliable ride-on mower and ready to switch to a battery-powered model, this is your best bet.

For a riding mower that won’t take up too much space in your shed, this battery-powered model from Cub Cadet is small yet powerful. It has a 56-volt battery that offers up to 90 minutes of runtime, and it actually charges back up in around 4 hours—much faster than larger models. The mower has a 30-inch deck that can side-discharge or mulch grass clippings, and it also boasts a tight 18-inch turning radius that lets you navigate around obstacles with ease.

This compact mower is designed to easily fit through gates, and the brand claims it only takes up the space of two garbage cans. It has a high-back seat for comfort as well as cruise control and two USB charging ports, and you can’t beat its low-maintenance design.

You’ll be able to power up steep hills with ease on the Troy-Bilt Bronco 42-Inch Gas Riding Lawn Mower. It has an automatic transmission (just like a car!) that makes it easy to drive, and its 20-inch rear wheels offer superior traction for sloped terrain. The lawn tractor has a 42-inch deck with anti-scalp wheels to prevent turf damage, and the machine’s 19 HP 544cc engine will make quick work of overgrown grass.

The Troy-Bilt Bronco has a step-through frame that offers more leg room, and it offers a mid-seat back and rubber footpads to keep you comfortable. The machine has a rear hitch to pull garden carts, sprayers, and spreaders, and there are also bagging and mulching accessories available separately. However, the one downside is that this mower only offers five cutting heights, with the lowest setting at 1.25 inches.

The 10 Best Lawn Mowers of 2022

Final Verdict

The RYOBI 48V Brushless 38 in. Electric Riding Lawn Mower is a top choice among riding lawn mowers thanks to its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, powerful performance, and ease of maintenance. If you prefer a gas mower, consider the Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro LT 42 in. 19.5 HP Gas Riding Lawn Tractor, which boasts a hydrostatic transmission and can be used with a variety of multi-season accessories.

Power Source

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to buy a gas- or electric-powered riding lawn mower. Gas mowers are generally more powerful, but they’re louder, less eco-friendly, and require more maintenance. Electric mowers, on the other hand, are typically less powerful with a shorter run time, but they’re quieter, easier to start, and better for the environment.

Deck Size

The deck size of a lawn mower dictates how wide a path it cuts—larger decks cut wider paths on each pass. A deck size of between 30 to 60 inches is recommended for most homeowners. Bigger decks are better for lawns with few obstacles and turns, while smaller decks will be helpful if you have to mow around trees or garden beds.

Grass Clipping

Don’t forget to consider how the lawn mower handles grass clippings. Some machines simply spit clippings back out onto your lawn, while others have options to bag or mulch the cut grass. The best option for you simply depends on how you prefer to handle your clippings.

This article was written by Camryn Rabideau, a freelance contributor for The Spruce. As someone who grew up on a 70-acre farm and owns a 5-acre parcel herself, she’s no stranger to lawn mowers, and she’s written extensively on them. She’s also personally tested the RYOBI 38 in. 75 Ah Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower and used other riding lawn mowers from RYOBI and Husqvarna.

While selecting lawn mowers for this list, she looked at factors such as their deck size, power source, special features, comfort, and warranty period. She also spoke with Caroline Skelton, Go-To-Market Manager for Riding Lawn Equipment at John Deere, for insights on choosing and maintaining a riding lawn mower.

Best Riding Lawn Mowers 2022

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

Mowing your lawn might always feel like a chore, but when you’re trying to cut over a quarter acre of land with a walk-behind mower, it can feel even more dreadful. The good news is there are plenty of riding mower types to help cut down on the time and energy it takes to keep up with lawn care this year, especially if you have more than a half-acre of land. Some even make it enjoyable (hello, cruise control and cup holders!). Whether you’re looking for a gas or battery-powered tractor, rear-engine model, or zero-turn mower, we’ve tested many models and researched the market to recommend the best riding lawn mowers of the season.

Best Riding Lawn Mowers
The Expert: Roy Berendsohn is our senior test editor who has been reviewing outdoor power equipment at Popular Mechanics for over 30 years. From his decades of mower testing, he’s learned you’ve got to cut a lot of grass and mow under a wide range of conditions to get a sense of what a mower is worth. He cuts grass throughout the mowing season to evaluate the latest machines, including riding lawn mowers. And he’s intimately familiar with industry players, big and small, having tested all types of tools over the years.

Types of Riding Lawn Mowers

There are essentially three types of riding mowers to choose from: rear-engine mowers, front-engine lawn tractors, and zero-turn mowers. What type of mower you want depends on your property size, terrain, budget, and preferred method of mowing. We recommend a rear-engine mower for up to two acres and a tractor or zero-turn model for up to four acres. Although lawn tractors might have convenient attachments to help with other yard work, zero-turn mowers have a better turning radius to accurately follow edges and efficiently turn around on passes when cutting large amounts of flat land.

All three types are available in gas- or electric-powered machines. Battery mowers are quieter (and often more expensive) than their gas-engine counterparts, whereas the latter can more easily handle extreme mowing conditions, such as tall, thick grass. Regardless of the power source, riding lawn mowers come with multiple cutting height settings, typically from 1.5 to 4.5 inches.

What to Look for in a Riding Mower

Popular Mechanics’ resident lawn mower expert Roy Berendsohn has plenty of advice on what to look for in riding mowers. For people with a lot of grass to mow and not much time to do it, there are three non-negotiables, he says. You’ll want the widest deck/biggest engine combo and a reliable hydrostatic transmission. In addition, don’t forget the importance of a comfortable, well-supported seat and a high top speed to help you get through long mowing sessions.

Related Stories

“For people with hills or mushy areas, one of the best options is a locking differential,” Berendsohn says. “Engage it to equally distribute power to the rear wheels for maximum traction.” For the best cut quality, “you want to look for a well-supported deck with maximum ability to ‘float’ over the terrain.” Look for a deck suspended from the tractor so it can follow the ground contour as much as possible.

Although this list provides mower options suitable for lawns of all shapes and sizes, remember to download the owner’s manual before you buy and look at the machine at a dealer. If you do your own service, check for good access to the air and oil filter, a sensible belt configuration, and a deck that can be easily removed.

How We Evaluated These Riding Lawn Mowers

To recommend the best riding lawn mowers, we relied on our extensive mower testing over several decades and consulted with Pop Mech Senior Test Editor Roy Berendsohn. We have tested some models (or their predecessors) reviewed below, whereas others earned our recommendation after we thoroughly evaluated their design, promised performance, features, and cost, in accordance with Berendsohn’s advice. Consumer reviews from Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Amazon helped confirm our recommendations.

Ryobi 42-Inch 100-AH Zero-Turn Electric

Ryobi 42-Inch 100-AH Zero-Turn Electric

Ryobi 42-Inch 100-AH Zero-Turn Electric

$4,999 at Home Depot

Pros
Cons

“Ryobi’s electric mowers are a kick to operate,” Berendsohn says. “They’re light and swift (top speed of 7 mph), and because they’re comparatively small with a compact wheel base, it feels more like a lawn buggy than a mower.” Powered by a 100-amp-hour battery and four brushless motors, this zero-turn Ryobi can cut up to three acres on a single charge—no need to worry about refilling a gas tank or worn-out spark plugs. The electric design also ensures a quieter operation than gas machines. Four brushless motors and two steel blades can shape up unruly lawns, and you can set the cutting height between 1.5 and 4.5 inches tall. An investment to be sure, this mower is also fully decked out with an adjustable seat, onboard storage, cup holders, a USB charging port, cruise control, and LED headlights, so you can mow your lawn even as dusk sets in.

Troy-Bilt TB30 B Riding Lawn Mower

Troy-Bilt TB30 B Riding Lawn Mower

$1,899 at Home Depot

Pros
Cons

Ideal for lawns of less than two acres, the Troy-Bilt TB30 B is a compact riding mower that will save you storage space and money. Sturdy construction meets a quality 10.5-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine. Its 30-inch cutting width is slightly larger than an average walk-behind mower, so you can speed through your weekly maintenance cuts. The six-speed transmission tops out at 4.25 mph, which is slower than some riding lawn mowers but considerably faster than your average walk-behind. This mower also has just five blade-height settings—from 1.5 to 4 inches—compared to high-end models that offer upward of 10. But these compromises are hardly dealbreakers if you’re a first-time riding mower buyer or want to save some cash.

Husqvarna YTh34V54

$2,999 at Lowe's

Pros
Cons

A large 54-inch cutting deck, 24-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine, hydrostatic transmission, and cruise control all ensure a smooth ride on this Husqvarna lawn tractor. According to Berendsohn, its “big engine paired with a big deck combine to help you get the job done quickly, without breaking the bank.” Even with its big power and cutting deck, its compact design makes it easy to maneuver and store. The lawn tractor is compatible with dozens of accessories and attachments, such as mulch kits, tow-behind spreaders, and aerators, all sold separately. All told, this Husqvarna offers a great balance between power, size, and price tag.

—BEST REAR-ENGINE MOWER—

Ryobi 38-inch 100-AH Electric Riding Mower

Ryobi 38-inch 100-AH Electric Riding Mower

Ryobi 38-inch 100-AH Electric Riding Mower

$3,229 at Home Depot

Pros
Cons

Nearly as powerful as Ryobi’s zero-turn electric mower reviewed above, this riding mower can mow for 2. 5 hours or 2.5 acres before you need to charge its 100-amp-hour battery (easy to do with a 120-volt outlet). Instead of four brushless motors, this model has three, but you still get a nice wide deck with 12 height settings from 1.5 to 4.5 inches. The feature set is also great and includes cruise control, LED headlights, and a control panel with USB charging. If you aren’t committed to a zero-turn mower but want to go electric, the Ryobi 38-Inch 100-AH riding mower delivers a clean, even cut with no gas or fumes and little maintenance.

John Deere S100 Lawn Tractor

John Deere S100 Lawn Tractor

Pros
Cons

This John Deere is an affordable and durable lawn tractor with a solid cast-iron front axle and 17. 5-horsepower engine to mow, mulch, and bag on any terrain. The deck adjusts between 13 settings for a custom cut height between 1 and 4 inches. Plus, there are plenty of compatible add-ons like a mulch kit, bagger, front bumper, and tow-behind spreaders and other tools. In addition to these features, the S100 offers a reasonable 18-inch turn radius, separate gas pedals for forward and reverse, and comfort conveniences like an adjustable seat, cup holder, and small storage compartment.

—BEST ZERO-TURN FOR LARGE YARDS—

Ariens Ikon-XD 52 Kawasaki

Type: Zero turn | Cutting Width: 52 in. | Power: Gas | Model: 915267

Ariens Ikon-XD 52 Kawasaki

Ariens Ikon-XD 52 Kawasaki

$3,799 at Lowe's

Pros
Cons

Ariens mowers and snow blowers have earned high marks in our tests for decades. We attribute that to sound engineering and better-than-average build quality. This mower combines the reliability and high-torque characteristics of a 23-horsepower Kawasaki engine with a rugged 52-inch fabricated (11-gauge) steel deck, plus a smooth-running Hydrogear EZT transmission at each rear wheel. The Hydrogear is a popular residential-grade transaxle with a one-inch-diameter axle and a 900-pound weight rating. You need that much capacity with a machine like this. The mower by itself weighs 635 pounds before you add a driver and 2.8 gallons of fuel. The Hydrogear provides a top speed of 7 mph. You also get very robust construction in other critical areas: a four-point deck mount similar to one on many commercial mowers. The deck mount hangs off a tube steel frame. And Ariens frames are stiff, models of neat welding and well-applied paint.

—BEST MID-SIZE ZERO-TURN MOWER—

Husqvarna Z248F

Type: Zero turn | Cutting Width: 48 in. | Power: Gas | Model: 967844801

Husqvarna Z248F

Husqvarna Z248F

$3,299 at Lowe's

Pros
Cons

If our previous tests have proven one thing, it’s that Husqvarna is a company that pays close attention to the details. And in the case of this mower, that attention went into the redesigned 48-inch fabricated 10-gauge deck. Each of its three blades have an aerodynamic shape reminiscent of a stingray’s wing tip. Those spinning blades not only cut the grass but are also intended to produce a tremendous amount of lift and airflow inside the deck, especially when combined with the curved air baffles welded to the deck wall. The mulching action of the grass prevents clogging, according to Husqvarna, and the aforementioned airflow is supposed to shoot the debris right out the side. (Without a test, we can’t say, but we have seen good cutting performance with similarly designed blade-deck combinations in the past. ) And the blades are mounted on cast-iron spindles, a sturdy material that withstands heat and dampens vibration. Unlike some residential spindles, these have grease fittings for improved longevity. Powering the mower is a 26-horsepower Kohler engine, a powerplant that has provided sufficient torque in past tests, even in tall grass.

Which mower to choose? Rotary or disk? Overview of mowers for tractor

Basically, tractor mowers are divided according to the type of drive into rotary and belt. Belt use the power of rotation of the traction wheels, are easily aggregated with the tractor, do not require adjustment and are quite unpretentious. The rotary mowers are powered directly by the engine and offer superior performance. The installation of a rotary mower, as well as its operation, requires compliance with safety measures so as not to damage the machine and disable the main mechanisms. Rotary mowers are considered more reliable, easy to operate and easy to repair. The disc rotary model is convenient for processing meadows with an uneven surface, as well as for swampy and weedy areas.

Depending on the type of hitch, mowers can be mounted and trailed, rear-mounted and front-mounted.

Also an important role in choosing a mower is working width , especially when the farm already has rakes, balers and other forage harvesting equipment. It is important that the windrow or swath formed by the mower does not interfere or slow down the work of the rest of the equipment. The cutting width of the mowers varies from 1.3 to 3.2 meters.

Mowers are rich in additional options. For example, swathing or windrowing, conditioning and fluffing. By combining the right options and technical features, you can get the perfect machine for a particular farm.

Top 5 mowers of 2022

Rotary mowers KRN-2.1B manufactured by Bezhetskselmash have a working width of 2.1 meters and 4 working rotors, each with 2 mowing knives. The model of the mower is designed in compliance with the norms and traditions, but at the same time, new technologies and an improved design are used in production.

Advantages of KRN-2.1B mowers:

1. Modern protective device when encountering an obstacle. The fuse allows you to save the blades when meeting obstacles that arise on the way. When the protection mechanism is activated, the mower blades deviate to the side at an angle of up to 45 degrees.

2. The gearbox housing is reinforced and the working parts are sealed.

3. The mowed grass is laid in an even swath, which makes it easier for the baler to work further or transport the hay.

The KRN mower is aggregated with tractors of traction class 0.9 and 1.4, for example, МТЗ "Belarus 82" , equipped with a three-point hitch system, having a PTO with a speed of at least 540 rpm and the ability to lift at least 600 kg . Mowers can also work with tractors such as T-40, MTZ-422, Belarus-622, KhTZ-3512, LTZ-60AB, AGROMASH 50TK, YuMZ-6AKM40.2.

Rotary mower KRN-2,1B

Similar mowers are disc mowers KDN-210 . Modern design, simple setup and preparation for work, easy operation - these are the main characteristics of Belarusian mowers. The KDN-210 mower is a little more expensive than domestic KRN, due to the fact that the designs of the mowers are different.

Advantages of KDN-210 mowers:

1. High productivity up to 2.85 ha/hour

2. Reliable protection of the mower cutter bar against damage when hitting an obstacle, due to the installed shear key on each mower rotor.

3. Laying the mowed mass in the swath, working with high-yielding and laid grasses.

For aggregation with KDN mowers, tractors of traction class 0.9 and 1.4 are suitable, for example, MTZ "Belarus 82" , equipped with a three-point hitch system, having a PTO with a rotation speed of at least 540 rpm.

Disc mower KDN-210

If you have a medium-sized farm that needs high-quality and reliable equipment, or you are a forage harvester for sale, then Bellon 9 mowers0004 will be ideal. Disc mowers handle all green crops with a consistent, even cut. At the same time, the mowed mass is not cut twice: due to the special shape of the disc and knife, the mowed mass does not go to the side, to the next disc, but up the beam.

The main characteristics of these mowers are a reliable strong frame, stability, low power consumption and high performance.

Bellon mower advantages:

1. High performance and high working speed thanks to 5 working rotors on a mower with a working width of 2.1 meters.

2. The system for protecting the mower when it encounters an obstacle, as well as the presence of a system that ensures that the mower adapts to any field terrain.

3. Fast maintenance, convenient design and accessibility to all parts of the unit. It only takes 15 minutes to change a disc gear!

Light and simple mowers coupled with tractors of traction class 0.9and 1.4, for example, MTZ "Belarus 82" .

If you plan to harvest legumes, clover, alfalfa and other large-stemmed crops, we recommend that you consider the Bellon G6000M flaking mower. The conditioner opens the outer layer of the stems and releases excess moisture from them, speeding up the drying process, while maintaining the same consistency and all nutrients. As a result, both thick stems and thin parts of the green product are dried at the same time.

With the right lawn mower, you can effectively keep your lawn in good condition. Working with perfectly matched equipment is a pleasure.

How to choose a mower?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a mower. If we correctly define our own needs and get to know the market enough, then a well-thought-out purchase will become a hit. Working with the right equipment will become a favorite pastime, and after mowing you can enjoy a long-awaited rest in the garden.

Fashion is constantly changing. Every season, new models of mowers appear on sale. Producers double and tire to create a whole new quality. However, the basic characteristics of these machines have remained the same for many years, and individual examples may differ in appearance and additions. Therefore, lovers of beautiful gardens have to make difficult decisions.

Two or three years ago things were much easier. Gas ducts were much more expensive, so their electrical counterparts were more popular. Today, the price difference is small. Thus, there is a dilemma about which type of machine to choose. Each solution has its pros and cons.

Electric mower

The choice of mower should be determined by the size of the area that we intend to cultivate. It is assumed that for areas up to 500 m2, a convenient electric version is sufficient.

TRYTON TOA Electric Mower 34141

Ergonomic electric lawn mower with dust-proof motor and high power reserve (1500 W). The lawnmower allows you to mow strips of grass with a width of 34 cm, and it is also convenient to use the central cutting height adjustment. Large rear wheels make it easy to maneuver even on rough terrain. The body of the machine is made of plastic. The basket for a mowed grass with a capacity of 40 l is included in the package. The manufacturer provides a two-year warranty on the product.

A well-balanced solution would be, for example, a small Tryton TOA34141 lawn mower. Users can enjoy both the performance - using car names - and the styling of this car.

Its 1500 W electric motor is enough to effectively cut the grass across the entire working width of 34 cm. The intuitive cutting height adjustment system will not be a problem even for beginners in the field of lawn decoration.

The "body" of the car also deserves attention. In the case of the model discussed here, the interior is enclosed in a streamlined dynamic body. Small wheels with an optimally selected diameter, made of high-quality plastic, make the lawn mower light and easy to drive and effectively overcome small obstacles on rough terrain. The quality of the materials used does not raise any objections. Ergonomics of the machine is also maintained at a high level, although it is light.
When deciding on an electric mower, we must have a garden extension. You can find a full range of such topical products on the market.

Depending on the size of the plot, we should have a power cord that is long enough to allow us to easily reach any corner of the garden or plot, for example, to cut the grass in front of the gate. It is important to note that it can be used with many different devices, so it is a good investment.

- Undoubtedly, the great advantage of electric mowers lies in the relatively low noise generated during operation. Therefore, if we respect our neighbors, for example, we live in a semi-detached house or if a friend has a small child behind the fence, it is worth choosing an electric car. In addition, its operation and maintenance is very easy. Almost every gardener can handle it, sums up Jaroslav Bednarchik, brand manager for Tryton brand, which offers high quality power tools and gardening machines.

Battery and petrol mower

And what do you do when you need to cut grass in a larger area or if the lawn is far from an electrical outlet?

- There are two options to choose from. The first is a cordless lawnmower. It's quiet here, but you have to charge the batteries due to work breaks. Therefore, this is not the optimal solution if we have to mow a large area. The second suggestion is to invest in extension cords for the garden, which we connect to the nearest socket - the cheapest with a length of 50 m costs about PLN 120. However, remember that the farther from the power source, the more efficient the machine. Differences up to 50m are hardly perceptible to the average user, but above this distance more power drops may appear, says Jaroslav Bednarczyk.

Lawnmower TRITON TOO 5671B

High quality 3 in 1 powered lawn mower equipped with a powerful (3.2 kW) 4-stroke Briggs & Stratton OHV engine. The mower allows you to mow grass belts with a width of 56 cm and conveniently adjust the central cutting height in the range from 25 mm to 75 mm. Large rolling bearings make it easy to maneuver the mower even in difficult terrain. The mower has three mowing functions: chopping (mulching), side ejection and working with a basket on mowed grass. The equipment is equipped with a practical organizer in which you can put, for example, a bottle of water or various small items. Manufacturer's grant for a two-year warranty.

The best alternative in this case is a petrol lawn mower. It's heavier and louder than the electric version, but its range is virtually unlimited.

It is worth choosing a design that has been structurally tested based on a durable engine for which we will be able to buy spare parts for even about a decade. This is a Tryton petrol lawn mower, model TOO5671B.

Its heart runs on PB95 gasoline, an economical Briggs & Stratton 750Ex OHV four-stroke engine that runs smoothly after firing.

On the right side of the lawn mower's main handle is a driving style control, just like in the best cars. Thanks to this, we can determine the speed of the car. The symbol of the turtle means a calm journey, and the sign of the rabbit allows you to travel at high speed.

Engine power is enough to cut grass in an area of 56 cm (this is the cutting width). The user can pull one lever to set the cutting height from 25mm to 75mm.

In addition, there is a practical organizer where you can put your essentials or take with you a bottle of water or other drink that you need on hot days.

The mower is equipped with three mowing functions: chopping (mulching), side discharge and basket operation. In this model of the car, it was also possible to slightly reduce the weight and use additional wheel bearings. All this makes the Tryton lawn mower a product that will meet the expectations of very demanding users.
