There is a tiny village on the banks of the Syasi River in the Volkhovsky District.
It has only four houses, a farm, an apiary and a workshop building. There has been a social village "Svetlana" here for more than a quarter of a century, where people with mental disabilities live. True, diagnoses, like the word "disabled", are not accepted here.
Svetlana is not a dispensary or an orphanage. And a small community, with its own way of life, rules and desire to make life easier for some people...
It all started over 30 years ago, in the 1990s. A woman named Svetlana lived in St.
Petersburg, her daughter was ill. Creating a place where such people can live happily became her dream. Unfortunately, the woman died before the construction of the village began. She had cancer. The settlement was named after her. This is how "Svetlana" appeared - a social village for special people.
Now there are four large houses in the village. They are built by the hands of the guests. 17 people live here permanently. Each resident has his own room. Each building has its own name. One volunteer was named after Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Other houses are in honor of the polar traveler Fridtjof Nansen, the miracle worker Seraphim of Sarov and Larsh, a Norwegian who once worked in this village. Each has its own atmosphere and its own way of life.
The village is located in a picturesque place - it is surrounded by fields and forests. The village has many trees and greenery. Oddly enough, Svetlana is hard to find on the map, we were helped by local residents to get to it.
Villagers realize themselves in labor and creative activities. For example, they bake bread for all the inhabitants, play in performances, take care of animals or grow vegetables.
Upon arrival in the village, we were cordially greeted by the executive director of Svetlana Elena Aleneva:
“I have been working here for over 20 years. Prior to that, she taught physics at a St. Petersburg university, and during her maternity leave, she and her husband, an artist, left here as a volunteer. So they remained. My son also works here.
The idea of the village is that the wards, employees and volunteers live under one roof, they have a common meal, work and everything else. All responsibility is shared...”
When I asked how the boarding school differs from Svetlana, Elena, smiling, answers:
“A person wants to be here - this is important. This is not always the case in boarding schools. And it is unlikely that in a large boarding school pupils would be allowed, for example, to cook.
The guys are brought here by relatives, we are not looking for special people. In recent years, we have had to actively refuse: the houses are full, and very rarely - if someone leaves - we can accept new guys. I repeat that this is not a boarding school, they are adults and can freely live here all their lives...”
Assistance to the countryside comes from the state in the form of presidential grants. Recently "Svetlana" won the competition for the development of new workshops for the third time: furniture, candle, dairy. The children not only bake their own bread, but also prepare cheese, butter and cottage cheese. The dairy products produced by the farm are of the highest quality.
Life in Svetlana flows in the usual way. Holidays and performances are held, friendly and romantic relationships are built. Special people learn to take care of themselves. All residents perform socially useful work depending on preferences and physical abilities.
Educator and art therapist Irina Andreeva, who works in Svetlana Village, says people with special needs are the most grateful.
She explains that it is not easy to work with them, but it is like a challenge for professionalism: to try to find such an approach to everyone so that the explanations become clear, and the final result of the work has aesthetic beauty.
“There are shifts in society. When we went to the city 20 years ago and now there is a big difference. Today there are no more sidelong glances and stupid questions. Society understands that these people should live with dignity,” Elena Aleneva concludes her story.
Inset: The village of "Svetlana" is officially called an institution for the promotion of social and professional adaptation of people with mental disabilities. In Russia, this is perhaps the only settlement that represents the international Camphill movement, and there are up to 200 similar settlements around the world. Camphill is the name of the area in Scotland where the Austrian psychiatrist Karl König founded the first of them in 1954. The movement adheres to the principles of anthroposophy - the doctrine according to which every person, regardless of his mental and physical abilities, is a whole person and should have the opportunity to be involved in society.

Here you can not just relax in nature, but fully immerse yourself in village life: milk cows, collect eggs, weed beds, chop wood, make cheese and cottage cheese. In the eco-restaurant you can taste local vegetables and fruits, wild berries, honey from the apiary.
