Kitchen Carpet Tips
Modern Kitchen Carpets
Perhaps you think that carpet textiles have no place in the kitchen, as they are easily stained with grease, drinks and food leftovers? However, the main thing here is to correctly choose the location of the carpet in the kitchen area, its composition and color scheme.
ANSY Carpet Company's carpet selection guide with designer recommendations will help you find the right balance between practicality and aesthetics.
Choosing a location, size and shape
A modern kitchen is a spacious room, often combining a kitchen unit and a living room or dining room for receiving guests and family communication. This image of the kitchen dictates the following options for the location of the carpet.
1) In the dining area. The dining table and chairs are fully carpeted.
Carpet for dining areaRecommendation: Use the 24-inch rule to determine the correct size, which requires the rug to protrude at least 24 inches (60 cm) over the edge of the table. This arrangement ensures the convenience of guests, since the edges of the canvas do not interfere with the movement of chairs during dinner.
2) Along the kitchen furniture (work area). In this case, the kitchen mat performs both an aesthetic and practical function, providing comfort to the hostess's feet and the aesthetic integrity of the interior.
Carpet along the kitchen furnitureRecommendations. In this part of the kitchen, carpets in contrasting colors look better or, conversely, to match the furniture set.
3) In functional areas. Rugs can be used to visually break up a space. To do this, they can be laid in different parts of the kitchen - at the sink, between the work area and the island, in the cooking area.
Carpet to highlight the functional areaRecommendation: When using several carpets in the kitchen, choose sheets of different sizes, as the same rugs clumsily divide the space in half. Try to keep the styles of the canvases in harmony, and not in contrast with each other.
Tip: To get an idea of how the carpet will look in the kitchen, experiment with paper tape and sheets of newspaper. These simple tools will help you visualize the borders and choose the optimal size of the product.
Size and shape recommendations:
- For narrow spaces and on the floor between the work area and the kitchen island, carpets are ideal.
- A large modern design carpet in a single color design will add warmth and comfort to a spacious kitchen.
- When choosing carpets of large sizes, try to leave a free space of 10–50 cm from the edges of the carpet to the furniture and the wall.
- Rectangular and square rugs can be used almost anywhere. Round shaped rugs look good in the center of the kitchen or in the dining area with a round table.
- Irregularly shaped canvases are effective for placing accents in the interior and smoothing out the strict lines of the interior.
Paying attention to practicality and safety
Since the kitchen is a very active and dirty area, it is important to take seriously the choice of carpet material, type and color.
Material. In terms of practicality, mixed compositions (wool + viscose, wool + cotton, wool + bamboo silk) are ideal for the kitchen. Also, designer carpets made of leather, woolen, jute and bamboo mats are ideal for dining rooms. Products made from these natural materials are easy to clean and practical to use.
We do not recommend: silk carpets, as natural silk is afraid of grease.

Colour. Choose from colorful and colorful rugs, as well as rugs in non-marking colours, browns or dark tones.
We do not recommend plain carpets in light colors.
Invoice. For kitchens, lint-free or short-pile carpets, as well as kilims and sumacs, are well suited.
We do not recommend long pile carpets due to the difficulty of cleaning and drying.
Safety. Kitchen rugs are usually small and laid on smooth tiles or laminate. To avoid slipping on them, use anti-slip underlays or stick double-sided tape on the wrong side of the carpet.
Choosing the design of the carpet depending on the style of the interior
For rustic kitchens, carpets with ethnic ornaments (Caucasian, Moroccan, Azerbaijani) or handmade woven mats are suitable. Modern handmade carpets in muted colors harmoniously fit into Provence-style interiors. In terms of ornament, you can experiment with floral and fruit motifs.
Oriental textiles with rich Persian ornaments will add charm to the classic and Victorian style kitchen.

Models with the effect of faded flowers and worn ornaments in the kitchenIndustrial loft style kitchens and dining rooms gravitate towards designer effect rugs, vintage and minimalist pieces.

When choosing a color for your carpet, keep the 60-30-10 rule in mind. According to this principle, 60% of your kitchen space should be the main calm color - it can be the color of the walls or furniture. An additional, more saturated color accounts for (30%). And finally, the brightest accent color in which the kitchen decor is sustained is 10%.
Apply this rule as follows:
- To create a calm interior, match the carpet to the main color of the kitchen.
- Perfect color harmony is achieved when the carpet has a palette that matches the complementary and accent colors.
Also do not forget that all these colors and their shades should be in harmony with each other.

Using carpets in the kitchen
The kitchen, for most people, is not just a cooking space, but also a living room, dining room, the main meeting place for all family members. And that means that the space should be functional and comfortable, cozy and beautiful. The use of a carpet in the design adds to the kitchen interior not only originality and sophistication, but also allows you to solve a number of practical problems.
Many people doubt the expediency of using carpet products in the kitchen space. To refute the existing opinion, consider the advantages and disadvantages, properties and characteristics of kitchen rugs, and what is important to consider for the right choice.
Separation of the dining area
Pros and cons of using kitchen carpets
The floor in the kitchen is subjected to a lot of stress and various negative influences, so it seems that the use of carpets will only create additional difficulties, but in reality everything is the same absolutely not. A wide variety of modern finishing materials allows you to get a high-quality and durable finish, durable and resistant to moisture, grease, etc. But ideal materials do not exist, almost all have their drawbacks, and kitchen rugs will help to hide and reduce them, protect and extend the life of the flooring.
Benefits of using carpets:
- Floor protection against damage, dents, scratches (linoleum, wood or stone coverings).
- Floor insulation (laminate or tiles).
- Additional soundproofing.
- Zoning of the premises (separation of the dining area or working area).
- Visual change in the geometry of space (expansion, elongation, etc.).
- Creating comfort and coziness.
- Creating an original and stylish kitchen interior.
Disadvantages of using carpets in the kitchen:
- Complicates the floor cleaning process.
- Rapid soiling of lint, accumulation of dust and debris.
- Impractical to clean (frequent washing or cleaning).
Carpets are not recommended to cover the entire surface of the floor, it is better to use several in different areas.
Room zoning
The most appropriate rugs look:
- In the dining area.
- Near a sink or stove.
- Along the working area.
The use of carpet products in the kitchen can protect against moisture, dust, dirt and significantly improve the quality characteristics of flooring, create a spectacular and harmonious space. The main thing is to make the right choice, in accordance with the tasks to be solved.
What to consider when choosing
Practicality is the most important requirement for kitchen rugs. Products must be resistant to moisture and dirt, not slip on the floor surface, easy and quick to clean.
The performance is affected by the materials used for production, the texture and height of the pile, the presence of water and dirt-repellent impregnation.
Therefore, in order for the carpet in the kitchen to please, be comfortable and serve for a long time, it is important before choosing not only to decide on the color and size, but also to take into account the properties of materials and the characteristics of the pile for each specific case.
Interior design options
Material
The material for the kitchen rug must have increased strength and be resistant to various negative influences. For production, artificial and natural fibers are used.
Natural materials:
- Wool. Woolen carpets are warm, soft, beautiful, have excellent soundproofing and heat-insulating properties, but easily absorb moisture and dry for a long time. Wool carpets are expensive and impractical when heavily loaded. If you choose a wool carpet, you must have a water-repellent impregnation.
- Cotton, jute, sisal, bamboo, linen. Carpets made from these fibers are easy to wash, dry quickly, are practical to use and are inexpensive.
Synthetic materials:
- Polyester. Durable synthetic material looks like wool. Polyester carpets are easy to care for, have an elastic pile, retain color well, and are durable. The fibers are not susceptible to biological attack, are endowed with dirt-repellent properties, but absorb fat, forming stains that are difficult to remove.
- Polypropylene (olefin). The material is resistant to moisture and dirt, retains color, does not cause allergies, does not accumulate static electricity. Polypropylene carpets are inexpensive, but have low wear resistance and fire safety.
- Acrylic. Acrylic fibers are difficult to distinguish externally from wool. They repel dirt and do not absorb moisture, are resistant to fading and have bright saturated colors. High-quality synthetic material does not accumulate static electricity, is resistant to fungi and bacteria, and is easy to clean. The main disadvantage of acrylic carpets is the instability to the effects of fat, stains are difficult to remove.
- Nylon (polyamide fiber). Dense, durable and wear-resistant material, retains color well, easy to care for. Additional processing eliminates the accumulation of static electricity. The service life is at least 10-15 years.
Synthetic mats are the best option for the kitchen. They are light, do not cause allergies, are easy to clean, do not accumulate static electricity, and are not affected by microorganisms.
Pile
The main principle in choosing the pile structure is that the shorter, the better the carpet is suitable for use in the kitchen. The best option is a very short pile or its complete absence. Long pile is difficult to clean and it is crushed under heavy load.
For a rectangular table - a rectangular rug
Shape and size
The "correct" geometry and dimensions of the rug are important in the overall perception of the kitchen space. For example, an overly large carpet would be out of place in a small room.
The planned location is fundamental to the choice:
- It is enough to place a small rectangular or square rug by the sink.
- At work area. You can lay a narrow path along the kitchen set or between the work area and the "island".
- In the dining area. It looks as harmonious as possible when the shape of the carpet repeats the shape of the dining table and is larger in size by at least 60 - 70 cm so that the legs of the chairs do not cling to the edge. For a round table, a square or round product is suitable, for a rectangular or oval table, a rectangular or oval rug is suitable.
Color combination
Color
The choice of color depends on the overall design of the kitchen. The carpet is a unique element in decoration, setting the tone for the atmosphere of the room and connecting all the components into a complete picture. A well-chosen pattern and color can enliven the interior, set the necessary accents and create a corner of coziness and comfort.
A few factors to consider:
- Any stains are clearly visible on light colors.
- Non-staining deep colors and variegated patterns make dirt and crumbs invisible.
- Cross stripes or "waves" in the design will "expand" the space.
- Narrow and long models elongate the size of the room.
- The colors of the carpet should be in harmony with other design elements (upholstery on chairs, curtains, etc. ).
- If several mats are used, they must be matched in the same style.
Rubber edging
In addition to all of the above, it is important to take into account that the mat does not slip on the surface, otherwise it will have to be additionally fixed with adhesive tape, special Velcro, rubber bands. It is most practical to choose products with a non-slip base or rubber edging.
Interior options
Carpets in the kitchen - it's comfortable, beautiful and practical
Modern kitchen design trends include the use of carpets and destroy the persistent opinion that they do not belong in the kitchen. Design solutions are not new and for many cultures carpet is an integral part of interior design. In addition, modern materials make it possible to manufacture products that meet all the requirements of operation in difficult conditions. The main thing is to take into account all the nuances when choosing, and then the carpet will not only delight with its spectacular design element with its color, but also a practical addition to the room.
