Dressing table with storage design

How to organise your dressing table

January is the perfect opportunity to have a big clear-out and reorganise your home – so now’s the time to give your dressing table some much-needed attention. If your room's getting-ready area looks more like a job for Marie Kondo than a glamorous, relaxing sanctuary, then now's the time to get it organised.

It's true that makeup can be tough to keep tidy– all those mascaras, lipsticks and individual eyeshadows rolling around can quickly create a cluttered feeling. It can also have you reaching for the same old cosmetics every day as a messy space makes it difficult to see what you really have to work with – like when you keep using the same old pan because you can't bear to sort your kitchen cupboard.

Fortunately, there are plenty of dressing table organisers out there to keep your collection more manageable. A few perspex organisers and a jewellery box or two can work wonders for turning a tangled pile of necklaces and haphazard makeup bag into a Pinterest-perfect space. Here's our pick of top organisers to sort your stuff.

Instead of hiding your expensive makeup away in a drawer, show it off – your Chanel lipsticks deserve pride of place on your tabletop. There are lots of clear perspex makeover organisers with dedicated sections for lipsticks, palettes and tubs that’ll keep things orderly. Having a clear view of your makeup will help when you’re searching for different cosmetics, too. If you invest in several organisers, you can mix-and-match to get a solution that'll work seamlessly and can be added to if your collection grows.

Makeup brush holders

These brushes are going on your face, so keep them hygienic and don’t thrust them into the depths of your cosmetics bag. A decent set can run into the £100s and can look very stylish, so show them off properly.

A pen pot or similar dressing table organiser will keep these tools neat and upright so you can quickly see what you need. There are so many different styles, so if you don't fancy clear glass or perspex, it should still be easy to find one to match your space. You can also use this space to keep your hair tools to hand, if you don't keep them in the bathroom.

Jewellery storage ideas

Rifling through a jumbled jewellery box to discover your favourite necklace is tangled up in knots is always annoying – especially if you’re in a rush to head out. These delicate items can be tricky to keep organised, and more so the larger your collection. However, investing in some dedicated jewellery organisers will help keep things neat and tidy on your tabletop and simultaneously save your sanity when looking for one specific piece.

You can prevent necklaces and bracelets from tangling by hanging them on a jewellery tree. Wall-mounted hooks will also keep strands separate and save you precious countertop space for makeup and pretty perfume bottles – handy if you have a smaller dressing table.

Ring holders and ring boxes are perfect for keeping your favourite bands in one place. As for earrings, storing delicate studs in a lidded trinket pot will add some extra glam to your tabletop, while multi-tiered stands are good for bigger hoops, drop earrings and larger collections in general.

If you’ve got an extensive selection of jewellery, it deserves to be shown off properly. Storing your choicest pieces in a segmented glass cabinet will keep them in one place and accessible at first glance. Stackable organisers are also great for jewellery and watches, especially if you have limited space.

Trinket trays and jars

Rather than throwing hair accessories and keys into a random drawer, a pretty trinket tray makes an aesthetic alternative for keeping essentials to hand. You can also use them for storing everyday rings and earrings before you put them back on in the morning.

Your dressing table is also a place for removing makeup and finishing your skincare routine, so you’ll need somewhere to store makeup remover pads, earbuds and other basics. Decanting them from their unsightly plastic wrappers into stylish glass jars or decorative containers will leave your area looking polished and organised. Using containers of different heights to your space will add additional layering and interest.

How to organize your dressing table

for cosmetics for accessories storage ideas putting things in order

This article is intended primarily for those who are tired of looking for lipstick or mascara in a heap of cosmetics on the dressing table, as well as for those who do not want to bring any self-respecting lady to such a state. A dressing table is a special place where cosmetics, jewelry, pleasant and useful little things that are dear to a woman's heart are collected. And so I want every tube, every jar to find its place on the table, and use it only for joy and pleasure!

10 dressing table rules

These recommendations apply, of course, not only to this storage location, but to any other. By following them, you will quickly restore order and be able to maintain it without much effort:

  1. The main horizontal surface must remain free in any case. Of course, the temptation is great to make the countertop with jars, tubes, bottles of hair products - after all, so much space is wasted! But it is the free work surface that sets the tone for the accuracy of the entire table.

  2. Get cluttered! Periodically audit among your cosmetics, ruthlessly sending dried, expired, disliked, lipsticks, mascaras, creams, blushes, etc., that did not fit for any reason, to the trash can. Analysis of cosmetic blockages, moreover, will allow you not to buy, for example, another palette of shadows, because the previous one, it turns out, is in perfect order.

  3. Define a place for each category of cosmetics, actively use organizers for small things like cosmetic brushes, sponges, cotton pads and sticks. Palettes are a very ergonomic solution, since shadows, lipsticks or correctors are collected in one box, and are not a pile of assorted jars and tubes.

  4. Rationally use the useful space of the inner drawers, ordinary boxes, caskets, baskets, dividers and even saucers will help you with this - the main thing is to get the cells you need in size. The long compartments are great for storing eyeliners, pencils, mascara, gloss and liquid lipstick, combs and beauty brushes. Short ones - for sponges, lipsticks, mono-boxes with shadows, etc.

  5. Perhaps the most important tip for ordering your dressing table is to try not to store little things just like that. Always use something to limit the space where they will be. An ordinary tray, stand, basket and any other container will do.

  6. Do not try to place a lot of decorative elements on the dressing table. If space allows, decorate it with a pair of figurines or vases, put flowers in a vase or pot, add a diffuser with your favorite scent. If you have a very small table at your disposal, limit yourself to the most necessary - let it be a very specific place for placing cosmetics and jewelry, and transfer various decorations to cabinet shelves.

  7. For perfumery, select a small flat decorative dish or buy an elegant cake stand with a leg: this way the bottles will not “scatter” around the table, but at the same time they will be visible. The same technique can be used for any other small things - a tray or stand will help to collect cosmetics and jewelry in one place.

  8. When choosing a storage location for various little things, you should focus on the corresponding needs. Cosmetics in the container should be located freely: it is more convenient to use and will not lead to damage to fragile shells.

  9. Stick to an important rule: keep only what you really use on the table. Keep everything temporarily unnecessary in a separate box or trunk somewhere on the mezzanine of the wardrobe.

  10. A lot of space on the table is occupied by combs, brushes, curling irons, hair straighteners, but you can’t do without them. Do not store them on the work surface, use internal drawer dividers or special holders that can be attached to the back of the door or side of the table.

    Dressing table organizers

    Let's dwell on the organizers in more detail: these simple devices work real miracles, making the dressing table tidy and comfortable to use. They are specially designed for cosmetics and useful little things for a woman and can be very different:

    • multi-tiered models are a real find for lovers of a large number of various cosmetics. They take up little space on the table, and the capacity due to several levels located in height is impressive. In addition to cosmetics, it is convenient to store jewelry in such accessories: earrings, bracelets, rings;

    • pay attention to coasters or organizers with a rotational mechanism: the overview of the contents and use is much more convenient;

    • It is recommended to store makeup brushes in an upright position: this way the pile does not break, and the surface of the table does not get dirty, and the brushes will last a long time. For these purposes, a tall deep container filled with, for example, foam granules from any hardware store, decorative pebbles or even coffee beans is suitable: just stick the brushes into such a filler with the reverse end;

    • ordinary office coasters are also suitable for decorating the working space of a dressing table: jewelry, lipsticks, boxes with shadows can be conveniently placed on horizontal trays, cosmetic brushes, mascara in vertical compartments;

    • if possible, choose transparent containers: the contents visible through the walls will make it easy to find the right box or tube;

    • a dispenser for cotton pads or a concise jar for cotton swabs - easy-to-use and durable accessories that will ensure a civilized storage of hygiene items;

    • hanging organizers located on the wall next to the table - this is a very rational idea! The cosmetics stored in them do not take up a useful place at all, but at the same time they are in full accessibility and do not create a mess;

    • the outer side walls of metal organizers and the inner side surface of the drawers can also be actively used. An iron base or a metal sheet enclosed in a box and pieces of a flexible magnet glued to the bottom of the boxes create additional storage space for various small things.
