An English country bedroom can come in many forms, from a low-ceilinged, beamed attic in an old cottage with uneven walls and floors, to a graceful room of grand proportions in a Regency villa. The age of the house might conjure up images of traditional decoration, full of patterned fabrics and antique furniture; or the eccentricities of the architecture might suggest that a cleaner, more pared-back approach will work. There are plenty of looks for country bedrooms that we love: patterned wallpaper, brass bedsteads and quilts are wonderful for creating a sense of warmth, while traditional four-poster beds with stately hangings are irresistible in the right setting. Equally, a white-washed wall and modern wooden furniture can seem just right in ancient rooms where the quirks of the surroundings need to be balanced by a simple aesthetic. Alexandra Tolstoy's Oxfordshire cottage is a charming mix of old and new. Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler worked with the existing features of each room to breathe new life into them. The bedroom's orange velvet curtains (out of shot) were an original fixture, though Emma had them remade and hung from an antique pole to match the quilt (which she sourced from Colefax and Fowler Antiques). Country style in different regions has its own features, as it is formed under the influence of local traditions and climatic conditions.
How to furnish the interior of a bedroom in country style
When decorating the interior, you will have to pay special attention to the decoration of walls, ceiling and floor. If you decide to use wall paint, then it must be matte. It is acceptable to use several shades to highlight one or two zones in the room, but most often the finish is made in one color.
The effect of whitewashed walls can be achieved with decorative plaster. Adjust the graininess of the mixture, then it will turn out to make the walls rougher in some places.
The easiest way to decorate walls is to stick paper wallpapers. Choose not only plain wallpaper, but also in flowers, polka dots or stripes to emphasize the simplicity and unobtrusiveness of the interior.
If desired, brickwork can be imitated on one of the walls, and wooden beams can be fixed on the ceiling. It all depends on your design idea, because you can make an interior with rustic motifs not only thanks to the decoration of walls or furniture, but also textiles. Even the most austere atmosphere can be diluted with the help of properly selected curtains, bedspreads and decorative pillows made using the patchwork technique.
An important role in the arrangement of the interior is played by lighting, which must fully correspond to the purpose of the room.
The bedroom may have subdued lighting, so use lamps with fabric shades. Sconces and floor lamps will look beautiful in such an interior.
Accessorize with cute vintage pieces that will accentuate the design and create a cozy atmosphere in your bedroom. Porcelain figurines, wicker baskets and boxes, paintings with natural landscapes are ideal. He approached the design by studying the natural elements of the site including trees, views and light, the vernacular design of the area and the clients’ personality. Craig designed a barn and the house – made up of a one-story and a two-story building – connected by a stunning 20-foot steel and glass breezeway.
