The issue of how to style a console table is an important one as whether it’s in a living room, dining room, or a hallway, it’s a prominent piece of furniture. 

Leaving its surface empty is a missed opportunity to create a wonderful vignette and – in family homes – a bare surface might prove a magnet for clutter, creating an unwanted sight.

How to style a console table

Color, line, texture, and scale of items such as table lamps, objets, artwork, and books are all important considerations when considering how to style a console table, whether it is located in a contemporary or more traditional space.

We asked some of the world's best interior designers for their top five rules on decorating a console table in a living room or entryway for impact – ideal for your arsenal of hallway ideas.

1. Create a cohesive look

Consider working with a theme for the objects on a console table for a cohesive look. Here, an antiqued glass mirror takes center stage, with a range of objets in a range of natural tones displayed casually, but deliberately.

Pieces that don’t take the same cue prevent the whole from looking over the top, and create a frame for the display.

How to style a console table and give it classic credentials? Selecting a pair of table lamps is a traditional approach to creating symmetry in interior design that’s perfect for many rooms. 

‘When styling a console, I typically aim for symmetry, whether that's accomplished with lamps, vases, or decorative objects,’ says Ashley DeLapp, founder and principal designer of Ashley DeLapp Interior Design . 

Follow this approach when decorating a console table and little else may be needed for a beautiful display. ‘I like to keep things streamlined and clean, using books to add height while showcasing special trinkets or collections of flowers,’ Ashley says.

In a contemporary room scheme, paring back what’s on the console table can be the best tactic. What’s crucial if that’s the case is selecting decorative pieces of sufficient scale to appear considered. On this table a simple bowl of flowers draws the eye while the focus is on the artwork above, framed by the console below.

Considering how to style a console table when the goal is a soothing scheme? Opting for a color palette in gentle natural tones is a great approach, especially in an entryway. ‘Try grouping a piece of sculpture, a statement lamp and a vase of flowers for a look that is balanced but has a more contemporary feel,’ says designer Birdie Fortescue . ‘Use a generous rug in coordinating tones and a congruous painting or mirror to complete the scheme.’

‘An antique console does more than provide a place to set things down,’ says Henriette von Stockhausen, co-founder and creative director of VSP Interiors . ‘By adding a pair of lamps with antique silk shades for a welcoming glow, along with art, tapestries and decorative items, one can create a layered comfortable look. ’

Make a pleasing vignette on a larger console table with a pastel palette to draw a variety of pretty pieces and a floral arrangement together. The addition of white keeps the effect fresh and sophisticated. Smaller decorative pieces are best grouped, while taller designs will introduce the height that’s necessary on a larger piece of furniture. 

If you’re including artwork, hang it close to the table so it reads as part of the whole, and link it with color, too.

Entryways can be tricky spaces to deal with as the proportions are often slim, and they suffer from little natural light and architectural interest. However, you can use some hallway wallpaper ideas to help create interest, as Irene Gunter, founder of interior design studio Gunter & Co explains:

‘I really wanted to introduce some wallpaper to inject color and texture but it wouldn't have worked in large amounts. This discreet frame detail that our joiner made from liquid metal panelling beads has created such a big impact, it provides a beautiful space for the wallpaper whilst framing the entry table perfectly.’

The position of the over-sized centrally-hung mirror is key, too – it is close enough to the console below to become part of the display of accessories, giving the entryway incredible impact and focus.

Beautifully crafted antique console tables can look fabulous and add instant character to entryways – and if you’re lucky enough to have the space then a narrow piece can fit perfectly, like in this hallway by interior designer Penny Morrison . 

Add a pair of patterned table lamps to create balance at either end of the table, a gallery wall of smartly framed paintings and an impactful vase of blooms for a softening decorative touch. ‘First impressions are essential when welcoming both you and your guests into your home. In order to achieve a statement hallway, I always incorporate a console or entry table into the space, which is both functional and elegant,’ says London based bespoke interior designer Louise Bradley . 

‘When dressing the entry table, it is important to consider both purpose and scale, drawing the eye into and around the room. Avoid clutter by adding a small decorative box, where you can store your essentials upon arrival or alternatively choose a console with drawers. 

'Adding greenery and a scent diffuser will also create an uplifting ambiance. Add further impact by dressing the walls with a large mirror, this will assist in reflecting natural light throughout and will open up the space.’

Note the slimline proportions of the table – including its legs – and the tall, narrow mirror – both cleverly work to exaggerate the entryway's height, making the narrow space feel more generous.

‘When styling a console table, consider scale and proportion,’ says Louise Wicksteed, design director at Sims Hilditch interior designers. ‘For example, table lamps framing the console add height and symmetry. Potted plans in a round bowl lead the eye, while stacked books and decorative objects add a personal touch.’

What do you use a console table for?

Console tables provide a space for table lamps and displays of decorative pieces and artwork and, because they are slim, they can fit into narrow areas like halls and entryways as well as into dining rooms and living rooms. As an alternative to positioning it against the wall, you might locate one at the back of a couch in the latter space.

They’re a versatile choice that could stand in for a desk in a compact space, or a bar when entertaining.

A bit of history

Today everyone can buy a console in the hallway, but once this piece of furniture was found only in palaces and high-society salons. Console tables came into fashion in the Baroque era, namely during the reign of Louis XIV, known for his excessive craving for luxury. Exquisite consoles made of rare wood, decorated with openwork carving, gilding and painting, quickly migrated from the interiors of Versailles to the homes of all the French nobility, and from there they spread throughout Europe. Such a compact accessory has ceased to be a symbol of luxury, but has not lost its charm and functionality, thanks to which it can be considered applicable to any interior, not limited to idle baroque.

Features and purpose

Consoles vary in size, shape and position. The tabletop is always mounted against the wall, but some products may additionally have two legs, resembling a cabinet or table. If there are supports, then they determine the height of the countertop. Furniture without legs is fixed in any convenient place.

Console table can be part of a bedroom, living room or dining room set. This speaks of the versatility of side furniture.

The console is always attached to the wall and is a decorative piece of furniture. A vase of flowers, a mirror in an elegant frame, photographs are placed on the tabletop. But you can make it more functional - use it as a bedside cabinet or a shelf on the hallway wall. To do this, it is better to choose a model with a built-in drawer of a drawer or folding type. Such furniture can be located along straight walls, as well as in a free corner, which allows you to complete the interior, emphasize its style.

Why can the console be the most expressive piece of furniture in the hallway interior? Varieties of consoles

No matter how unambiguously the design of the console is described, all the same, adjacent, intermediate options are created - more functional or, conversely, decorative. It is customary to distinguish three main types, but they do not describe the whole variety.

Classic or side console

Table with a narrow rectangular or semi-circular top rests on one or two legs, the long edge of the top is attached to the wall. This type of console table is often bought for the hallway, where there is not always room for overall furniture. However, it will fit into any room.

Wall console

This variety is more properly called a shelf placed at table level. Her legs are purely decorative, they do not reach the floor and are attached to the wall. Such a table looks nice and saves space in small spaces. If you add it with a mirror, it will visually expand the space and allow you to use the table as a dressing table.

Free standing console

This piece of furniture is also called a console table. Its tabletop is very narrow, but the design is stable and does not need to be fixed to the wall. Such a table can be moved to the wall, to the sofa, used for zoning the space in the room. In some models, the tabletop is fixed so that it can be placed above a sofa, armchair or bed - it will replace a breakfast or laptop table. Freestanding tables are often equipped with wheels, so they can be moved around the house and adapted to different needs.

Materials

For the manufacture of tables, including cantilever, use the entire range of materials. The choice depends on the style and purpose of the table. For example, a console table in the interior of the Baroque, Empire or Art Nouveau style primarily serves as a decoration. Such furniture is made of precious woods, decorated with carvings, inlays, gilding or other decorative techniques. The table top can be made of expensive stone, such as marble.

A wooden console table with drawers will fit into Scandinavian style interiors. It will have a concise form, a tree is not necessarily expensive, and a box is a sign of functionality.

For a loft style, a geometric console with metal legs is more suitable; in a hi-tech interior, a table with an acrylic top will look good. The minimalist interior is complemented by a console, the tabletop of which is made of glass. Consoles made of chipboard and MDF are by no means out of style. It is the right furniture for contemporary interiors.

Entrance hall

The console, located near the front door, is a necessary thing in the house. You can put a bag on it, put gloves, use it to store accessories. If you hang a mirror over your table, you can take a look at yourself before leaving the house. In a spacious hallway, a console table will become part of the decor.

Living room

The console can be used in a variety of ways in the living room. Photographs of family members, jewelry, exhibits of the home collection are placed on the table. The console, moved to the sofa, will become a stand for remote controls, books, baskets with needlework. Depending on the configuration and dimensions, the console can turn into a coffee or serving table, or become a TV stand.

If you want to equip the living room with a workplace, pay attention to consoles with retractable or folding tops. They transform into a fairly spacious table, where there is enough space for a laptop, diary, documents.

Bedroom

In bedrooms there is always room for a console vanity. It is convenient if it has a drawer where you can store cosmetics. It is desirable to provide a mirror above the table with good lighting. A compact console can replace a bedside table - visually it takes up less space than a traditional bedside table.

Kitchen

Whether or not a console table is useful in the kitchen depends on the specific situation. On the one hand, you can arrange dishes on the console with shelves, place stocks of products in jars or boxes. On the other hand, all open kitchen surfaces eventually become covered with dust and grease - cleaning requires a lot of effort. If you often have tea parties in the living room or like to sit in the bedroom with coffee, cookies and chocolates, a console on wheels will come in handy. She modestly stands in the corner until she is needed, and if necessary, takes over the functions of a serving table.

A high console can replace a bar counter. She will do a good job of zoning space in a studio or apartment where the kitchen is combined with the living room.

There are also dining tables-transformers, which, when folded, are a narrow console.

There are many types of console furniture. The choice of the required model depends on its purpose, size, room configuration, product location, interior style. It is also necessary to pay attention to the material of manufacture of furniture.

By scope

Consoles come in two varieties - decorative and functional. The first panels decorate the interior, they are compact in size. A narrow console will help fill an empty corner or niche. The design of the table can be so expressive and bright that the product will look like an independent element of decor. To emphasize the console, it is good to hang a picture or a mirror above it. Often, with the help of such a table, a heating radiator is masked. Under the furniture, you can place an original pouffe, a floor vase or a wicker box. Thus, a narrow table becomes an independent art object that can transform the most nondescript room.

Modern interiors are focused primarily on the functionality of furnishings. The console also plays a practical role in the interior. So, in the bedroom, it can be used as a bedside table, dressing table or workplace. For comfortable operation of furniture, it is necessary to choose its size in accordance with the purpose. If it is assumed that the console will be instead of a dressing table, then a capacious drawer for cosmetics can be located under the folding table top. In the living room, it is placed against a free wall or near upholstered furniture.

Cantilever TV cabinets are popular in minimalist interiors. They look not so bulky, facilitate the cleaning process and give the interior a stylish look. In width, such furniture is quite convenient in order to safely install a modern model TV on it. If the TV is mounted on a bracket to the wall, then a cantilever cabinet or shelf organically fills the free space under it.

You can add comfort with the help of such furniture to a small hallway. The table will not take up much space, but there will be a plane for storing small things. And additional shelves will make such a piece of furniture roomy. Above the tabletop there is enough space for a mirror, a key holder or a hat rack. Free space below can be taken under a pouffe on wheels or a bench.





According to the device and installation location

There are different ways to position the console, depending on its design:

  1. Freestanding furniture console table. It can have 1, 2 or 4 legs, but it is distinguished from traditional models by a narrow tabletop. Given the number of supports, it is located near the wall or anywhere in the room. Modern models can be with wheels for easy movement around the room.
  2. Side consoles. They have two or one support. Sometimes a rigid wall mount is used to ensure a stable position.
  3. Wall models. The leg performs a decorative function or is completely absent. An oval, rectangular or semicircular tabletop is rigidly fixed to the wall and complemented by a decorating element from above - a picture, a mirror, a lamp. With this fastening, attention is paid to the decorative appearance of the brackets.
  4. Corner furniture console (freestanding or wall-mounted). With it, it is possible to rationally use the free angle. Such furnishings look especially original and expressive.
  5. Models with built-in cabinets under the worktop. Outside, they are equipped with beautiful fittings, they allow you to store small things, stationery, cosmetics.

Most often in the interior you can find products made from the following materials:

  1. Tempered glass. This model looks weightless and airy, best suited for small spaces where it is important to maintain a sense of light and spaciousness. External fragility is deceiving - the furniture has high strength and resistance to mechanical stress. Glass can be smooth and textured, transparent and tinted. Its biggest downside is cost.
  2. Natural wood. This environmentally friendly material organically fits into many areas of the interior - not only in traditional country music, but also in modern high-tech and minimalism. Depending on the style, the wood can be covered with a transparent or matte varnish, so you can emphasize the natural shade and texture. Toning compounds are also used. Wood is a soft material, so products made from it are often decorated with carvings and inlays. Disadvantages: high cost, requires special care.
  3. Chipboard. The chipboard console is a budget option. Its design is usually simple and concise, so these products look best in minimalist modern interiors. The disadvantage is the insecurity of stoves that can emit harmful substances.
  4. MDF. This is an alternative to wood. The design of such models is more diverse than that of chipboard products, and the cost is lower than that of solid wood consoles. The material is durable, but does not withstand serious mechanical stress.
  5. Metal. Models from this material can be found in urban styles. They look spectacular and emphasize the style of the interior. A separate variety is forged consoles painted white. Such models will be appropriate in interiors of Provence and Shabby Chic styles. The disadvantage of metal is its significant weight; it is worth choosing stand-alone consoles from it.

Metal

Metal models are most often seen in urban style interiors. Such tables are very effective and can become a bright accent. Recently, forged options in white color, which are suitable for Provence or Shabby chic style, have been in the greatest demand.

The most significant disadvantage of metal consoles is their heavy weight, which makes it necessary to choose models that stand separately from the wall.

Made of wood

Natural wood conquers with its environmental friendliness. Tables made of such material are suitable for many interiors, including country, hi-tech, minimalism. To give the tree originality and emphasize its natural features, it can be covered with a transparent or matte varnish. Due to the softness of wood, consoles from it are often complemented by carvings or inlays. Of the minuses, it is worth highlighting the high cost and demanding care.
