High heat tumble dryer setting

The high heat setting on a tumble dryer should be used for items such as towels and sturdy cotton items.

The temperature will vary between appliances, but as an example Samsung ’s high heat setting is around 140 to 145ºF (60 to 63ºC).

Medium heat tumble dryer setting

Use the medium heating setting on a tumble dryer for lightweight cottons, such as T-shirts. The permanent press setting works with a medium heat.

Medium is around 130 to 133°F (55 to 56ºC) on a Samsung appliance, for example.

Low heat tumble dryer setting

There are a variety of materials that should be dried with the low heat tumble dryer setting to avoid harm.

‘Many fabrics, such as acrylics, cashmere, wool, and linen, need low heat cycles when you tumble dry them,’ says Justin Soleimani, co-founder of Tumble .

Set the tumble dryer to low heat for clothes made from stretchy fabrics, too – that’s workout wear, and so on. 

Low heat is often used with the delicate setting on a tumble dryer, but check the item’s label as it may require no heat, or may be suitable for medium heat.

The low heat setting can be used after washing a down comforter or to tumble dry a duvet (but do check the tags on the items to make sure this doesn’t conflict with the manufacturers’ recommendations). 

Low is around 120 to 122°F (49 to 50ºC) on Samsung tumble dryers, as an example.

No heat tumble dryer setting

The no heat tumble dryer setting uses air at room temperature and there’s no heat. It’s for fluffing garments rather than drying them, and can help remove dust or lint, according to Whirlpool . 

What can affect dryer temperature?

The internal temperature of a dryer is affected by a number of variables, points out GE Appliances . These are the size of the load and how damp it is. ‘The combination of these two factors determines the amount of heat sink,’ explains GE. ‘Heat sink is the cooling action taking place when the clothes give up their moisture to the hot air stream that is flowing through the dryer drum.’

Tumble dryers with reversing drum

When the clothes are hanging on the line, they dry evenly on all sides. In a dryer, the process is a little different. Several things are put into the drum at once, the total weight of which can be 8–10 kg. The inner chamber has holes for the passage of air and special ribs designed to evenly distribute the laundry.

The dryer drum does not rotate as fast as washing machines - about 100 rpm. Things are processed with air heated to 60-75 degrees. Evaporating moisture is condensed in a special container or discharged into the sewer. The dryer is excellent for thick fabrics, blankets, sweaters or winter jackets that are difficult to dry outdoors.

The surface of the drum has special bulges that allow you to create a kind of air cushion. It makes the drying process gentle and prevents the formation of snags and pilling on clothes.

One of the most useful functions of the dryer is the reversing of the drum - periodically changing the direction of rotation of the motor. During the drying of the laundry, the drum will rotate not in one, but in different directions, so that the laundry does not stray into a tight lump and dries much faster.

Reverse tumble dryer treats clothes very gently. After the end of the process, you do not have to unravel a tight knot of things, as is often the case when spinning at high speed. Complex folds and creases do not form on the linen, which makes ironing also easier. If you plan to tumble dry delicate fabrics or underwear, it is recommended to choose a model with a drum reversal.

Heat pump tumble dryers

Many modern tumble dryers are equipped with a heat pump. They are much more economical than conventional capacitor-type devices, but are slightly more expensive, as they have a more complex design.

The dryer's heat pump is used to blow warm, dry air into the drum, the heated stream of which contributes to the rapid drying of the laundry, evaporating moisture from it.

In order for moisture to condense in a special container, the air must be cooled. In conventional dryers, this happens naturally. But since the room where the machine is usually quite warm, the cooling is not effective enough. Therefore, the temperature of the air flow circulating inside the dryer must be much higher than the air in the room. High temperature exposure contributes to the rapid wear of the fabric.

In heat pump dryers, moist air passes through the evaporator. It causes a rapid drop in temperature, as a result of which condensation forms. Water accumulates in a special reservoir, from which it is removed after work is completed. The air, freed from evaporation, enters the system again, heats up and is reused to dry the laundry. A single pump is used to generate the air flow and rotate the drum.

At first glance, it seems that the complexity of the design should increase the power consumption of the device, but this is not so. Heat pump tumble dryers take slightly longer to dry clothes, but are much more energy efficient. The equipment can be installed in any room - the presence of a ventilation duct and the possibility of ventilation are not mandatory conditions. In addition, the drying temperature in such devices does not exceed 40 degrees, so natural fabrics are not damaged and do not shrink. The dryer can be turned on simultaneously with other household appliances without fear of a high load on the power grid.

During washing and drying, wrinkles and creases form on the clothes, which makes them look messy. Washing machines with steam technology have become commonplace. Users managed to appreciate all the advantages of this technique: additional disinfection of clothes, elimination of allergens and odors, delicate effect on fabric fibers. The condenser dryer is convenient to use - it can be placed in any room. The only maintenance that the equipment needs is the timely emptying of the condensate tank. But modern devices save users from this work. In many models, it is possible to drain condensate into a drain. Like the washing machine, the dryer is connected to the sewer system, and all the water goes into it. This complicates the installation of equipment a little, but simplifies its operation.

Washing in an automatic washing machine is the initial stage of laundry processing, which directly affects its freshness and cleanliness. The removal of condensed moisture in dryers is carried out in two ways: through the vent or into a special tank. 16 unique programs

Gorenje's specialists have developed 16 unique programs to ensure optimal drying results for laundry made from different fabrics. Blended and synthetic fabrics have two drying warrants, hand iron (slightly damp) and cupboard dry (completely dry). All other automatic programs dry the products completely, however, if necessary, the user can set the special “Drying by Time” mode and independently control the result, completing the process at the right time and based on the further use of the laundry dried in this way.

Drying by time

The right drying program is the key to getting not only dry, but also pleasing to the eye and touch. As we have already found out, the programs used in Gorenje dryers are conditionally divided into drying according to time and residual moisture content of the fabric. The first method requires self-setting of the temperature (30, 60 or 90 degrees) and the duration of the working cycle. Whether the laundry is dry or not - the dryer does not know, so the user needs to check the degree of its "readiness" by touch. The second option assumes the presence in the inner chamber of the machine of highly sensitive sensors that carry out precise automatic control of the degree of humidity of the laundry during the entire drying cycle. Drying at low temperature

After the drying cycle is completed, a small percentage of moisture remains in the fabric - just so as not to overdry its fibers.
