How to Wash Microfiber Couch Covers in 2 Effective Ways – Trendy Couches

Can You Wash Microfiber Couch Covers?

As a mother of two toddlers, I take major precautions by ensuring my couches are covered in microfiber, if not they will be damaged from all forms of dirt in a minute.

Microfiber couch covers are durable, have high resistance levels to stains, and are very easy to clean away when they happen. However, having kids requires you to regularly have a cleaner in hand to help minimize stains immediately they happen, lest you suffer tough and hard-to-clean stains.

You can use resolve cleaner to wash your microfiber couch cover if it has “W” and “S” labels on it. Do this by spraying generous amounts of resolve cleaner on the stained area and giving it about 5 minutes to work on the stain then rub off the cleaner with a colorless sponge. Make sure you give it time to completely dry.

Ideally, you can wash your microfiber couch cover on a gentle cycle in a washer with a mild detergent or without any detergent at all, then transfer it outside to dry. Although you have the option to dry it in the dryer, it is not the safest method.

Washing your microfiber couch covers in a washing machine is, however, possible only if your couch has removable cushions and covers unless you want to wash your couch cushions too. You just have to unzip your cushion, remove the cushion covers, turn them inside out (to prevent the cushions from shrinking), and then toss it into the washer.

If your couch cushion covers are not removable, you can also easily clean them by spot cleaning, which is almost the safest method of cleaning couch cushions.

How to Wash Microfiber Couch Covers In 2 Ways

The best way to keep your microfiber couch looking clean and fresh every passing day is by cleaning it regularly. Microfiber couches tend to attract dust whether they have been used or not. Plus, regular cleaning is one of the best ways to increase the lifespan of your couch. Here are the 3easy steps to follow when washing your microfiber couch cover:

Spot Cleaning

Spot cleaning your couch covers would work effectively if the stain is fresh. Taking care of fresh stains immediately would save you from excess work as tuff stains can be very difficult to deal with.

What you will need:

Instructions

  1. Spray a generous amount of resolve cleaner on the stained area of your microfiber couch cover. Let it sit for about 5 minutes (the longer you let it stay the easier it will be to get rid of the soil or stain)
  2. Using your Bissell brush, rub the stain out gently and carefully (careful not to spread the stains on other parts of the cushion cover that do not require cleaning).
  3. Dampen your colorless sponge (avoid using a colored sponge as the color may rub off) with water then massage the area gently and slowly to extract the resolve cleaner.
  4. Using a microfiber cloth, rub the area gently to remove the excess water, then give your couch cover time to completely dry before using it.
Machine Washing

Although machine washing upholstery sounds like the best option for homeowners especially if the weather is cold, it is not the best idea for all upholstery. However, if your microfiber couch cover has a “W” label, then it is safe to be tossed in the washer. It is even better if your couch cover is removable.

Instructions

  1. Unzip your couch cushion then remove the covers from the cushion.
  2. Turn the covers inside out before tossing them into the washer to prevent them from shrinking.
  3. Check your settings. Make sure you wash them on a gentle cycle in cold water (This would also prevent your cushion covers from shrinking)
  4. You can choose to add a mild detergent or no detergent at all, both options are absolutely ok.
  5. After washing, you can choose to transfer them to the dryer or dry them outside if it is sunny (this might take about 3 hours). I personally prefer to dry them outside in the open as the dryer may subject them to shrinking hence ruining them (although not all upholstery is dryer-friendly)
  6. Make sure your covers have completely dried before returning your cushions in. this will prevent them from molds and bad odor.

Generally, this method works great, however, if the stain is still on your couch, you might need to repeat this process for the second time. Personally, I wash my couch covers in the washer and the results have always been great. I hope this works on your side as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Wash Microfiber Couch Cushion Covers In the Washing Machine?

You can wash your microfiber couch cushion covers in a gentle cycle with cold water with no or mild detergent if it has a “W” label on it. Checking the label on your upholstery before washing will prevent you from ruining it. Also, make sure you use the right upholstery cleaning detergent.

Couch cushion covers are subject to dust, food spills and drinks, pet hair, and other forms of dirt especially if you have kids and pets. And thus, they require regular cleaning to enable them to withstand wear and tear.

Machine washing upholstery is almost the best fallback plan if the weather is a bit cold on you and you most likely don’t feel like being anywhere close to cold water. However, you might really have to reconsider drying your couch cushions in the dryer if you don’t want them to shrink and wrinkle.

Since microfiber couch covers are usually sensitive to heat, consider hanging them outside to dry to avoid ruining them.

Can Microfiber Be Washed In the Washing Machine?

You can easily wash your heavily soiled microfiber upholstery in the washing machine to make them look clean as new without ruining them. Wash them in a gentle cycle in cold water or warm water, avoid using hot water to prevent wrinkling) with mild (Choose a gentle detergent) or no detergent at all. However, you will need to avoid washing microfiber upholstery with other types of fabric (especially cotton) as the microfiber may grab onto the lint.

If you want your microfiber upholstery to stand up to wear and tear, you would need to avoid using the dryer (microfiber upholstery is heat-sensitive) and fabric softeners (fabric softeners clog open spaces in microfiber thus ruining them)

Microfiber upholstery is literally the easiest to deal with. From being easy to maintain, and clean, to literally standing up to wear and tear since they don’t shrink or wrinkle.

Can You Wash Microfiber Fabrics with Vinegar?

You can wash your microfiber fabric by mixing a ¾ cup of vinegar and your preferred cleaning detergent, then add it to your clean water. The vinegar will work as a disinfectant while the detergent will minimize the vinegar smell on your microfiber upholstery.

Vinegar is literally the best cleaning agent that every homeowner needs. It is effective and absolutely affordable hence there is absolutely no excuse as to why you shouldn’t have it at home.

Can I Strip Microfiber Couch Covers?

You can strip your microfiber couch covers if they have removable cushion covers and toss them into the washer. You will need to wash them on a gentle cycle in cold water with mild detergent then air dry them (usually takes about 3 hours). Avoid drying in the dryer to avoid ruining them. After they have dried, use your Bissell brush to brush up the flattened fibers.

There are microfiber couches with removable cushions and those with non-removable cushions (the non-removable ones usually have Velcro in them to hold them at the back of the sofa). Although it is easier to wash couch covers than couch cushions, you can easily toss them into the washing machine.

How Do You Clean MicroSuede Couch Covers?

Microsuede couch covers can be easily washed in the washing machine. Wash in a gentle cycle using cold water (hot water is likely to cause wrinkling) and your preferred detergent.

However, you will need to avoid using any detergent as it may cause it to shrink, also avoid using bleach as it may cause discoloration.

Can You Put Microfiber Covers In the Dryer?

Microfiber covers can be machine washed but should not be machine dried. This is because microfiber has low resistance to heat and doing so may cause wrinkling hence ruining its aesthetic.

How should I dry my Microfiber Couch Covers?

Microfiber couch covers can be best dried out in the sun. They should take about 5 hours to dry completely if the weather is sunny.

Conclusion

Microfiber is the best option for furniture upholstery for most homeowners as it is literally easier to deal with. They hardly shrink or wrinkle and they are the best when it comes to withstanding wear and tear.

I think so. Gentle cycle as you said, luke warm water, maybe even let them soak so don't have to be agitated much. Regular detergent I'd guess, not too much, but enough. Air dry until almost dry, then dry on cool.

I'd try, unless there was microfiber with leather like parts.I've washed a lot of covers of different kinds, and as long as it had a zipper I gave it a go. Never ruined any.

I took my micofiber cushion covers off because I have a sectional and there was no way I was going to spend upwards of 130 dollars on a cleanning. My couch did not have any tags. I took the cushion covers off. Washed them inside out on delicate cycle on cold water with only a little detergent on them.

Took them out inspected them ran them in the dryer, (although I turned the covers back the right way) dryed them on low heat and just before they we all the way dry I put them back on my couch. And it looks beautiful and they are soft.

I just recently purchased dark brown microsuede couch and love seat. My cat decided it was her litter box. I tried all the enzyme sprays, baking soda none of it worked. I checked the cushion pads themselves and the urine had not soaked threw the cushion cover.

So I got brave through the cushion covers in the wash machine on delicate with a small amount of whisk laundry detergent. I then hung them to dry for about an hour and then through them in the dryer on low heat for about 15 minutes. I took them out still a little damp and put them back on. Yes it is a little hard putting them back on, but no more cat urine smell and they look amazing! They look brand new and feel wonderful! I hope this helps!

I just washed my Red Microfiber cushion covers on my sofa and they turned out great. Perma press setting with cold water on the washer and low heat on the dryer, only took about 25 minutes of drying time. They turned out beautiful, no shrinkage at all.

Now I can tell my daughter to do the same, by coincidence she bought exactly the same sofa and colour without seeing mine, we lived in different cities. She has 4 children so she has been thinking about having her set steam cleaned, no need.

I just washed my microfiber sofa cushion covers yesterday and they came out great and now my couch smells wonderful. I took them off the cushion, turned inside out, and washed on gentle with cold water and detergent.

I didn't put them in dryer because I didn't want to chance shrinkage. Instead I immediately put them back on cushions and air dried them off the couch. I feel like I have a new couch!

So,This morning I got a microfiber sofa and love seat off of Craigslist for my mom, lightly used but was a little dirty and a very good deal.

Professional cleaning is just not in the budget right now so I started goggling how to do it yourself. I read and watched many how to's about only using vodka and/or rubbing alcohol. And i tried the rubbing alcohol method. It;'s was tedious and did not work well. The cleaning code on my set is "S only." and there was a big warning sticker that said "do not use water based cleaners. I felt overwhelmed. I cannot give mom a dirty couch.

Finally I snapped and said to heck with it. I took all the cushion covers off and tossed them in the washer. I ran it with regular Purex laundry soap, Gain fabric softer and Clorox2 color safe bleach alternative. Heavy duty cycle, cold water. I did NOT turn them inside out. I will tell you, I have a newer HE washer, the kind that does not have the center agitator. When they where done I put them in the dryer for 30 minutes on the delicate cycle. End result, They came out looking and feeling like new!

For the rest of the sofa & loveseat, I used the handheld attachment of my Bissell SpotBot, I mixed the carpet cleaner concentrate with water per instructions on bottle but just just a little less than suggested. Took about four hours to dry as it was pretty saturated when I was done.

Now that it is dry and the cushions are back on, it looks like Brand New! I am not sure what the big fuss was about. Now my mom is getting a like brand new living room set that only set me back $80.00! Now that's ThriftyFun!

Hi, I have a tan microsuede sofa and it's been fantastic but after 7 yrs it's getting skanky! I researched and found I could get the top pillows on/off pretty easily, so washed 1 on cold/warm gentle with just a bit of gentle soap. Dried gently until just damp and put them back on-worked Great! Did the rest the same way.

Now the *cushions* are much bigger and won't go on/off easily, so I'm going to clean those tops lightly with warm/light detergent with my spotbot (it's a Godsend!) and dry in the sun. Thanks for the tips, all!

A spot bot is a great handheld carpet cleaner! You put it right on your problem spot, turn it on and leave while it does the work :). Great investment, especially if you have children or pets!

I was so nervous to put my covers in the washing machine but it worked amazingly well! Delicate cycle and a little bit of any brand of "free and clear" (dye/fragrance free) detergent. Then delicate cycle for the dryer. I took mine out when they were a tiny bit damp and let them air dry the rest of the way because I was paranoid about shrinking. I wish I had done this sooner!

Microfibre pillow: features and benefits

Reviews A photo

241

Various types of fillings are used to make pillows. One of the most popular and practical is microfiber. In this article, we will look at what the material is, how it is produced, what advantages it has, why you should choose models with synthetic fiber if you want to have a good rest.

The term microfiber refers to thin polymer threads (usually polyester or polyamide) that are twisted or fused together. The result is a dense single structure that resembles dense cotton wool. The second name for this type of fiber is microfiber. It is used both for sewing various products, and as a filler for pillows and blankets.

The main feature of microfiber is its size. It is a hundred times thinner than human hair and 30 times smaller than cotton. Due to this, the fiber is lightweight, but has high elasticity and strength. For additional protection against moisture and damage, it is impregnated with silicone.

Advantages of material

If you are interested in a microfiber pillow, you will be interested to know about its advantages. These include:

  1. High level of softness, but the material is quite elastic. It is comfortable to sleep on it, it is suitable for people who have problems with the neck or the musculoskeletal system.
  2. Odorless, hypoallergenic. The pillow is completely safe, bed mites do not start in it. It is suitable for both children and adults.
  3. Good thermal insulation. The material retains heat in the cold season and dissipates it in the summer. It is convenient and comfortable to sleep on it.
  4. Long service life. The microfiber quickly returns to its original shape, does not climb out, does not degrade or shrink over time.
  5. Affordable price. Since it is a polymeric material, its cost is much lower than that of a natural one. Buying such products will not hit the family budget.
  6. Light weight. The pillow is almost not felt, it does not take up much space when stored. Also, the material does not accumulate odors and removes moisture well.
  7. Easy maintenance. This material is washable. If he still sits down, then it’s easy to just add a new portion to the pillow.

Microfiber pillow is the perfect choice for the home. It is practical, inexpensive and elastic enough that even large people can sleep on it.

Maintenance instructions

Microfiber does not require special care. It is better to pay attention to the operation of the fabric from which the cover is sewn. In general, we recommend that you adhere to the following rules:

  1. When washing in the machine, select a program for delicate fabrics. As a result, the drum will work in a gentle mode, the product will not be damaged.
  2. Washing should be done in warm water (not higher than 40 degrees). If the pillow is very dirty, then you can choose 60 °, but you should not repeat this procedure often, because the fibers will lose the silicone impregnation.
  3. Try to use liquid detergents. They penetrate well and are easily washed out. Do not use bleach or conditioners. They can be detrimental to your property.
  4. Drying is best done naturally. Hang it on the balcony or just lay it in the sun. In a day, the pillow can be used for sleeping. For drying, it is not recommended to use a hair dryer, heating pads, stoves, etc. Make sure that the surface temperature does not heat up above 50 degrees.
  5. Once a month, try to knock the dust out of the product. It is recommended to wash it as needed, no more than twice a year. Be sure to use a pillowcase to keep the cover clean. It can be changed every week.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult to maintain. Even a teenager can handle it. The main thing is to observe the temperature regime when washing and drying.

  5. Additional care tips

How many bacteria are in your bed? Quite a lot if you clean your bed less than once every two weeks. This includes airing the mattress, washing bed linen and pillows. If you carry out these procedures regularly, you will avoid the appearance of fungus and other microorganisms in the bed.

Also, ignoring washing or improper washing of pillows is dangerous because the product is deformed and this will cause pain in the neck. Or you throw it away altogether because it has lost its shape and become too soft. If you are looking for a pillow that will fit you 100% and last for a long time, we advise you to look for it among our orthopedic pillow options. In this article, we will tell you how often to wash a pillow, depending on the filler, and how to do it correctly.

In addition to washing, there are several rules for caring for pillows. They are suitable for all pillows, regardless of the type of filler. The pillow will retain its anatomical properties longer if you follow these rules:

  • Shake gently daily. Suitable for feather pillows, the filler in which periodically goes astray.
  • Once a week, ventilate in the open air (for example, on the balcony) for half an hour.
  • Dry properly. When drying, the pillow must not be heated: do not lay it on the radiator and do not dry it with a hairdryer. Also, the product must be protected from exposure to sunlight.
  • Maintain a normal level of humidity in the bedroom. This is 30-45% for the cold season and up to 60% for the warm season.

It is also important to use not only a pillowcase, but also a cover that will protect the pillow from dust and moisture, and its shape from deformation. As a rule, a protective cover is included with the pillow and sometimes helps to slightly adjust the rigidity of the product. Please note that the height of your future pillow depends on the firmness of the mattress. Find out why you should not save on buying an orthopedic mattress before you start choosing it.

Wash each pillow based primarily on the manufacturer's instructions on the product label. If you do not find any instructions, use the following tips:

  • Water temperature. Pillows are washed in cold water. The maximum possible temperature is 30-40 degrees. Temperatures over 50 degrees can cause clumping of some fillers.
  • washing mode. Pillows should be washed at low speed. This also applies to spinning - the optimal value is 400-500 revolutions. If the typewriter has "down products" or "synthetics" modes, it is better to install them. An alternative is a hand or delicate wash. If the product does not fit in the machine, but it has a zipper, the filler can be divided into several parts and washed in separate covers.
  • Means for washing. Suitable for gel or liquid products. Dry powder particles dissolve poorly at low temperatures and accumulate in the seams.
  • Rinsing. An additional rinse will not be superfluous - this will help remove the remnants of the laundry detergent.
  • Drying. It is better to dry the pillows in the open air, but without direct sunlight. Periodic turning and whipping will help to dry the product evenly.

This instruction is something universal for washing pillows. However, the question of whether the pillow can be washed in the washing machine is strongly influenced by the type of filler.

Orthopedic (memory foam)

Wash only the cover as it gets dirty.

Modern pillows that can adapt to bends are made from materials that do not accumulate odors and dust. Therefore, there is no need to wash orthopedic pillows, airing is enough.

Washing the cover will help refresh the appearance of the pillows. If you're cleaning a stain from a pillow that hasn't been covered, use a mild soap solution for light stains and dry cleaning for heavy stains.

Latex

Inside this pillow is the congealed sap of the tropical hevea tree, purified and brought to a state of foam. The main difference between latex and memory foam is that the latex pillow restores its shape instantly. It can be compared to a spring. The memory foam pillow also recovers its shape, but much more slowly. Washing a latex pillow is recommended only as a last resort. It is best to clean it manually in warm water using gentle products and a soft sponge.

Wringing and drying in the sun are contraindicated, as is the case with a memory foam product. After washing, blot the pillow with towels and leave to dry on a flat surface without wrinkling.

Synthetic fill

Synthetic products (synthetic winterizer, holofiber, sintepukh) are not so finicky and can withstand half an hour washing in a machine with a liquid detergent, unless otherwise indicated on the label. Anatomical products made of synthetics are washed on average once every six months. A short wash at 30-40 degrees is suitable. Some models can even be dried and wrung out, check this on the product label. If drying and spinning in the machine are prohibited, it is recommended to blot the pillow with a cloth and dry it on a flat surface.

Organic filler

This type includes pillows made of buckwheat husks, rice and coconut fiber. They can only be cleaned from the outside with a vacuum cleaner. You can only wash the cover. Buckwheat filler is advised not to wash, but to sift (separate the husk from buckwheat) once a year. At the same time, after sifting, you need to add buckwheat so that the product does not lose in volume. So the filler will not lose the ability to support the neck in the correct position.

Feather

Feather pillows are advised to wash the least - once a year. This is because the natural feather filler loses its properties due to frequent washing. At the same time, it absorbs sweat, dust and odors faster than any other filler.

Before washing, it is important to understand which bird pillow is made of feathers and down. If the product is made of waterfowl down, then you can safely start washing. Otherwise, it is impossible to influence the filler with water, especially if it consists of feathers and fluff of chickens. Such material practically does not dry, does not tolerate moisture and, when exposed to it, begins to disintegrate into fibers. It is better to dispose of such a pillow immediately or dry-clean it exclusively for dry cleaning.

The process of washing such a pillow will require a lot of time and effort from you. Therefore, sometimes the most pleasant solution is to give it to the dry cleaners. if you still decide to do your own washing, consider the following points. It is better to wash in the machine in several passes, dividing the filler into parts so that it does not go astray. A delicate wash mode with 30 degrees and a gentle detergent without chlorine will do. Re-rinsing at low speeds is recommended. Do not use conditioner - it will soften the filler and the pillow will lose its shape. It is better to dry in a warm, ventilated area, shaking the product from time to time.

Camel wool

You can wash this pillow either by hand or in the washing machine. Washing in the machine should take place on a delicate mode and without spinning. Use liquid laundry detergent or extra rinse if using powder. Camel wool pillows are washed by hand in warm water with detergent. Before this, the pillow should be soaked for half an hour or an hour. Carefully lift and lower the product into the water. Rinse gently, let the water drain.

How to understand which option is best? Put the pillow in the washing machine. If it takes up more than ¾ of the drum, then wash it with your hands - the machine may not give a good wash. Dry the pillow outdoors out of direct sunlight. It is not necessary to beat a pillow from such material; over time, the filler will take the desired shape.

Bamboo

The filler of such a pillow is thin and durable bamboo cellulose fiber obtained from young shoots of the plant. These pillows need to be washed every 4 months. Suitable for delicate machine or hand wash. If the pillow does not fit in the machine, it will be easier to divide the filler into parts and wash it in several passes. Wash properly on delicate mode up to 40 degrees. Choose the shortest wash and the minimum number of revolutions.
Important! When washing a bamboo pillow, do not use bleach or soak the product before washing.

Pillowcase and cover do not protect the product from dirt by 100%. So if the pillow filling is washable, don't ignore it. Pillows are recommended to be washed every six months. So, you will save the pillow from the appearance of dust and insects. If insects still appear, you need to act quickly. The most effective ways to eliminate and prevent in the article on how to get rid of bedbugs.
