Brown-blue (blue, turquoise) living room, photo
Contrasting blue-brown living room is the warmth of wood and the coolness of blue. How is this possible, because designers usually advise choosing colors that are the same in temperature?
This combination is really unusual and rarely used in interior design, but skilled professionals see the potential in it.
The combination of blue and brown is found in nature - in the form of the sky and tree trunks, the sea and mountain ranges. And since nature is never wrong, the blue-brown tandem has the right to exist in the interior of the living room or any other part of our living space.
- See all about blue
- See all about brown
Proper introduction of blue-brown tones into the interior of the living room creates a psychologically comfortable, relaxing and refreshing atmosphere, which becomes an island of coolness in summer and evokes pleasant memories of the sea in winter. How to correctly apply these colors - we will tell below.
BLUE-BROWN LIVING ROOM: DESIGN BASICS
When planning the interior of a living room, you need to take into account its dimensions and location relative to the cardinal points.
For a small living room, a bright or moderate brown-blue range is recommended. Such shades are relevant as:
- beige-brown;
- pale brown;
- pale taupe;
- craola blue;
- dusty blue;
- light blue;
- wild blue craola;
- snow blue etc.
Light wood furniture and flooring will look good in combination with pale blue tones.
Examples of small living rooms in brown and blue are shown in the photo.
Spacious living rooms from 20 sq.m. extravagant dark shades are allowed:
- deep brown;
- willow brown;
- dark brown;
- chocolate brown;
- deep purplish blue;
- gentian blue;
- cobalt blue;
- night blue;
- ultramarine blue, etc.
Dark shades of blue and brown create a serious, solid, respectable atmosphere. A bright blue color scheme looks stylish and youthful, fresh and creative. For a modern living room, they often choose not even bright blue in its purest form, but a turquoise-brown combination.
Examples of living room interiors in turquoise-brown tones are presented in our selection of photos.
As for the combined kitchen-living rooms, keep in mind - the blue color dulls the feeling of hunger. So in the design of the kitchen-dining area, it is advisable to use blue only as accents.
The second factor to consider is the location, that is, which side the living room windows face, north or south.
Dominant blue, blue or turquoise is optimal for a southern living room on the sunny side of the house. And the dominant brown - just not dark, but lightened or moderate - is suitable for the northern living room.
There are also mixed shades, containing other cold or warm colors. For example, shades of brown with a cooling undertone, such as taupe or olive brown, are relevant for a southern living room.
And for the northern living room, you can choose mixed shades of brown, which contain a noticeable warm undertone - for example, reddish brown, red-yellow brown, copper brown, orange brown.
Blue is also blue in Africa, and no warm undertone can melt it. Any shade of blue will be cool in temperature, so in a northern living room, you should abandon its use on large surfaces and introduce it in the form of small accents.
Don't forget an additional neutral color. Lighten the blue-brown contrast with white, beige or gray.
HOW TO INTRODUCE BLUE AND BROWN IN THE LIVING ROOM
Before you start renovation, think over each element of the interior separately: walls, floor, ceiling, furniture, lamps, textiles and decor.
1. WALLS, FLOOR, CEILING
If you want to make plain walls, then choose a blue or light brown tone.
The following technique is also used: 2/3 of the walls are painted in blue, and the bottom 1/3 in white. At the same time, the blue part of the wall is also decorated with light moldings.
Walls in a pure blue tint are allowed only in spacious, southern and well-lit rooms, preferably with panoramic windows, and high-quality artificial lighting is also required. For the interior of a typical living room up to 20 sq.m. recommended all the same clarified blue and brown tones.
Combined wallpapers in blue-brown or brown-blue tones are also suitable for wall decoration. For the northern living room, it is better to choose wallpaper with a moderate brown background and a blue pattern, and for the southern one, blue or light blue wallpaper with a brown pattern.
Let's see what kind of wallpaper prints there are - abstract, classic, floral, combined floral and animalistic.
For modern living rooms, including kitchen-living rooms, designers often choose abstract prints.
For styles classic , neoclassic , eclectic with classic and art deco elements, there is a fairly rich selection of traditional patterns.
Blue-gold or golden-blue wallpapers are also suitable for a neoclassical living room.
There are some original prints that combine the themes of flora and fauna.
And the most popular print, of course, is vegetable. Wallpaper with floral patterns finds the widest application in both traditional and modern living rooms.
The third option is an accent wall in blue, and the rest of the walls are light brown, closer to beige. The blue wall is made either behind the sofa or opposite the sofa where the plasma panel will be installed. The wall behind the TV is not made accent only if the color of the accent wall is too active and bright (red, orange, yellow).
For the floor, in most cases, it is worth choosing a brown finish - in a shade of light wood for the interior of a small living room, medium brown for a modern living room and dark brown for a neoclassical respectable interior.
As for the ceiling, we recommend the stretch fabric in a third neutral color - white or light beige. Blue and brown in their purest form are rather gloomy colors that, without dilution with something neutral, create an oppressive feeling, so the color scheme of the ceiling should be lightened.
Although some people order blue or blue glossy ceilings, but with such a design decision, there should be little blue in the rest of the interior so that the atmosphere does not turn out to be too cold.
2. FURNITURE
Furniture looks good with wooden elements in the construction and blue or light blue upholstery. The tree at the same time compensates for the coldness of the blue tint.
Blue painted wooden furniture also looks interesting.
Against the backdrop of blue or blue walls, chocolate-colored furniture or a sofa made of natural leather can be placed. The chic leather upholstery of the sofa, armchairs and pouffes creates a special contrast with the blue interior elements.
3. LIGHTING
If you are going to decorate the northern living room in a brown-turquoise color combination, then take care of high-quality artificial lighting. Lay spotlights around the perimeter of the ceiling, purchase wall sconces, floor lamps and table lamps. The more light sources you use, the more comfortable the atmosphere in your living room will be.
In the southern room, alternative light sources in the form of floor and table lamps will not interfere either. After all, after a working day, you want to turn off the central light and plunge into a romantic atmosphere.
4. TEXTILE
Thick turquoise or chocolate curtains to protect from the sun's rays, as well as brown-turquoise curtains with a pattern, will suit the southern living room.
And in the northern room there will be enough translucent curtains in pale blue or light beige.
Brown-turquoise living rooms also welcome textured fabrics. Curtains with a relief surface will add dynamics to the interior and enliven it.
Embossed, textured material is quite difficult to find - you can take curtains with voluminous stripes instead.
5. DECOR
Accessories should be at least 1-2 shades darker than the upholstery. So, against the background of a moderate brown sofa, it is worth putting a chocolate-colored decor, and next to a blue sofa, objects in a brighter blue shade look better.
When choosing a painting, rely not only on your tastes and fleeting sympathies, but also on the recommendations of feng shui experts and psychologists. So, according to Feng Shui experts, images of a ship rushing confidently through the waves attract money luck, and mountain and forest landscapes protect from negative energy.
Modular paintings are suitable for a modern living room, that is, consisting of several separate parts - two, three, four or five parts.
Depressive, aggressive or decadent scenes are not recommended for living spaces. Let the king who kills his son remain in the museum, and for your peace of mind, it is better to choose a favorable plot.
11 DESIGN IDEAS TO REMEMBER:
It is important to find some zest that will distinguish your interior from others. Perhaps you will like something from our collection of ideas:
1. ACCENT WALL FROM PHOTOS
The photo shows a low-budget and creative way to decorate an accent wall using photos. Take real photos from your family history, print photos of your favorite stars in black and white, or mix your photos with black and white images of idols and beautiful city landscapes.
2. HOME LIBRARY
Blue and brown are soothing colors that increase concentration. So the bookshelves will fit into the blue-brown living room. Place a comfortable chair next to the shelving to enjoy reading during your free hours. It is desirable that there is a floor lamp next to the chair.
3. CELL PRINT
All shades of blue are cold, and one of the best ways to soften their perception is to introduce color in the form of printed fabrics. The cellular print is associated with a country house, rest at a camp site or in the countryside. And often it is transferred to the design of city apartments in order to warm the soul and create a truly cozy corner for relaxation.
4. PAINTED BRICK WALL
We are accustomed to natural or imitation walls with a natural shade of brick - such a wall is the hallmark of the loft style and other industrial design trends. This photo breaks the pattern - the brickwork is painted blue. Such an original move will be appreciated by bold creative people.
5. FUR
In addition to “cozy” prints, there is another way to soften the perception of blue - add a fur cape to the sofa or pillows with fur covers.
6. UNUSUAL VASES
The photo shows a brown-turquoise interior of the living room, complemented by a modest but expressive decor. This vase, in an exaggerated shape of a wine glass on a curved stem, evokes pleasant associations with the holidays.
7. BLUE AND GILD
Gold-plated photo and picture frames, lampshades and other gold-plated decorative elements add warmth to this gloomy living room with dark blue walls. This solution is suitable for a neoclassical interior.
8. STRIPED PRINTS
Unlike the checkered print, the striped pattern makes the atmosphere stricter, nobler, more aristocratic. Striped upholstery visually stretches pieces of furniture in height - they seem to become "slenderer". Wallpaper with a vertical stripe visually increases the height of the ceiling, while a horizontal stripe expands a narrow wall.
9. PAINTED VASES
A blue-brown interior will benefit from white, which is designed to neutralize the too cold effect of shades of blue. For example, buy white and blue vases inspired by Gzhel painting or works by masters from other countries. Dishes and vases are painted in white and blue colors by Japanese, Chinese and European craftsmen.
10. NATURAL STONE
As we said at the beginning, the blue-brown combination is inspired by nature itself. And natural stone will help to enhance the natural orientation of these colors - for example, in the decoration of a kitchen apron and a bar counter in a combined kitchen-living room.
Pictured is Brazilian marble, which contrasts wonderfully with the blue bar stools and blends with the brown accents.
11. ETHNIC DECOR
Zebra skins, African figurines or masks will find their place in a respectable blue-brown interior, giving it colonial features . This idea is especially relevant for styles English classic and art deco .

It is an excellent solution for those who strive to create a calm, cozy atmosphere and a sophisticated, sophisticated design. Light gray tones are ideally combined with azure, dove, aquamarine and bright blue colors. Thanks to such duets with a similar color range, you can create a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere that sets you up for relaxation.

Brown-blue living room
Sky blue paired with a chocolate shade will harmoniously fit into the interior of a spacious living room. Due to this combination, the room acquires a catchy, luxurious and stately look. Natural and neutral brown tones neutralize the coldness of blue and add coziness to the room.
Living room in beige and blue tones
A classic combination where cool sky undertones are combined with warm beige tones, contributes to the visual expansion of the space. Sand, cream and almond colors, complemented by blue, are perfect for a small living room with insufficient lighting.
The photo shows a combination of beige and blue in the design of a cozy living room.
Light blue combination with bright accents
Colorful inclusions in the interior of the hall in juicy blue, ultramarine or cornflower blue tones, can be used in any quantity. As saturated elements, upholstered furniture with sheathing in orange shades is chosen, a floor lamp with a purple lampshade is installed, or windows are decorated with cherry curtains.
To create a warm and sunny atmosphere, it is appropriate to dilute the main color azure blue with yellow. Very beneficial is the pink-blue tandem, which is associated with the crimson glow of the sunset against the background of a bright blue sky. This combination gives the living room additional contrast and at the same time gives lightness and tenderness.
Golden and silver hues are considered unique, harmoniously combined with the entire heavenly palette. The design of the hall, decorated with golden accessories, will look solemn, pompous and luxurious. Silver and metal details will give the interior coolness and elegance.
The photo shows the interior of the living room in blue, complemented by a bright rug and cushions.
Finishes and materials
Due to its incredible lightness, blue visually increases the height of the ceiling and expands the space. However, this effect can only be achieved in rooms with good natural light. It is necessary to take into account all the features of sky-blue shades. Despite the fact that this color scheme belongs to the cold palette, it can also have a warm tone, which is suitable for rooms with windows facing the north side.
Walls in the room can be covered with blue wallpaper. Cloths in light colors should be used for small rooms, and coatings in darker and deeper colors should be used in spacious living rooms or highlight only one accent plane with them. Painting the wall surfaces in blue and white stripes will help to significantly refresh the design and add attractiveness to it. In order for such a design not to look too colorful and irritate the eyes, paint is used in faded heavenly tones.
In the interior of the living room in blue, a classic white or soft milky ceiling will look best, which advantageously sets off the wall decoration and visually expands the room.
Laminate or natural wood parquet is the ideal flooring. In the guest room, you can also lay carpet in milky shades or lay out the floor with white ceramic tiles.
The photo shows blue wallpaper on the walls and the floor, lined with light tiles in the design of the living room.
Decor and textiles
Turquoise curtains with a simple and strict cut will give a special elegance to the living room. It is advisable to choose products from a denser fabric that will stand out against the background of the wall covering. Alternatively, windows can be decorated with chocolate, brown or golden curtains, two-tone curtains or canvases with large patterns.
It is appropriate to decorate a blue living room with light fluffy carpets and blankets, refresh the room with fresh green plants or flowers.
The photo shows the decoration of a small hall in beige and blue tones.
Accessories in the form of various vases made of white natural stone will perfectly fit into the hall. If the room has a fireplace, an open shelf above it can be supplemented with decorative candles, and the wall can be decorated with paintings or photographs.
A themed decor would be appropriate in a maritime style room. For example, a steering wheel is placed on one of the walls, a coffee table is decorated with shells or a vase with pebbles.
Furniture
Since sky blue belongs to a cold tint range, furniture items in warm beige, brown, sand or milky colors are chosen for the hall. Soft headsets in red tones look great in a blue interior.
Blue or turquoise furniture will perfectly fit into a light blue room. For a living room designed in deeper and more saturated colors, a sofa and armchairs with gray, white or other discreet upholstery are suitable.
Furniture items with silver trim deserve special attention. In order for such elements not to add even more coldness to the environment, they are supplemented with bright decorative pillows or blankets.
The photo shows the interior of a blue living room with orange upholstered furniture.
In the hall, you can place a brown wooden coffee table or a model made entirely of glass. An unusual solution would be a bleached design with an aging effect.
For interiors in shades of blue, also choose furniture with forged metal details or wicker sofas and armchairs.
The photo shows a large sofa with blue upholstery in a blue kitchen-living room in a modern style.
Design ideas in various styles
Blue is primarily associated with the marine theme. In a room with this design, light or rich heavenly shades are combined with white, beige and gray. This style is characterized by a striped print, which may be present in wall decoration or furniture upholstery.
In a classic style, pale blue walls are covered with wallpaper with vertical patterns and floral prints or painted with paint. The wall cladding is complemented by a dark floor covering.
