You don’t have to be an artist to create a great accent wall using paint. While one of the easiest ways to create a stunning accent wall is to choose a unique wall color for one of the walls in your room.

There’s a reason exposed brick is such a coveted feature of an apartment or house - it makes for a super easy way to spruce up your home aesthetic. “If you love the industrial look for your home, exposed brick is a great option,” says Franklin. “If you don't already have exposed brick walls in your home, opt for brick veneers to ‘fake the look’ or work with a contractor to add an actual brick wall to the space.”

“Consider the furniture in the space and the function of the room,” says Rees. “If you have a home office, you may want to select the wall behind your desk for an interesting Zoom background, or for a nursery, it may be the wall with the crib. You can also use an accent wall to highlight a special feature, such as a fireplace in a living room.”

The essence of such a design technique is to draw attention inside the room to a particular plane (wall, corner - yes, because there can be several accent walls, and even the ceiling can be an accent wall), and distract from others, perhaps not ideal in terms of design moments.

The accent wall always "solo" in the interior and attracts maximum attention.

What criteria should an interior meet in order for an accent wall to look harmonious in it?

— Reception with an accent wall looks good in interiors of any style: from classic to modern. You can apply this technique in any interior!

The only point: if your wall is highlighted with a picture, then it should be readable. It should not be blocked by voluminous backs from beds, sofas, it should be viewed in its entirety. And if this is a large drawing, then you should be able to move away from the wall to view.

Where is the accent wall most often used: in the bedroom, kitchen, living room, bathroom?

- I use accent walls very often in my projects in completely different rooms. In the bedroom, accent walls are most often chosen behind the bed or vice versa opposite it, in order to lie down to contemplate the pattern of beautiful wallpaper or your favorite paint color.

In the kitchen, accent walls highlight the dining area, sometimes the area of ​​​​upper cabinets (if you have an open wall above the work surface without drawers). In the kitchen, these walls are highlighted, for example, with tiles with an interesting pattern, slats, paint of a different color, less often with wallpaper, as this is not very practical in this room.

In the living room, the wall behind the sofa or, conversely, in front of it, is often accented with paint, wallpaper, and beautiful moldings.

In a bathroom, the accent wall is usually the wall behind the bathtub or the wall with the sink. Reception with accent walls can be used everywhere, it is only important to remember that this wall should be clearly visible.

How to start choosing an accent? What can it be: color, pattern, texture?

— How to highlight the accent wall (color, pattern or texture) depends on the style of your interior. In classical-style interiors, wallpaper, a fresco can be glued to the accent wall, it can be highlighted with a pattern of moldings or another color.

Modern-style interiors rarely use wallpaper, so most often accent walls are distinguished by a different color or texture (like concrete, for example), as well as drawings and geometric patterns. And the walls are also distinguished by slats, wooden decorative panels, etc.

I advise you to support the color of the accent wall (pattern or drawing) in other interior items so that it does not seem alien and the interior looks more harmonious.

Doesn't this wall get boring over time?

— Of course, an accent wall can get boring over time. In the same way as the whole interior can get bored in general, because our tastes and preferences change over time. But the accent wall allows you to make the space deeper and more interesting, this is its main task.

What are the pros and cons of an accent wall?

— Definitely, accent walls make even the simplest and most concise interior more interesting. It is also the cheapest way to decorate your interior! Yes, repainting one wall or re-gluing it with beautiful wallpaper will take much less money than if you paint and paste all the walls like that. We very often use this when we want to save the client's budget: we take budget-friendly background wallpapers for the main part of the walls and decorate only one wall with expensive designer wallpapers!

I see only one (and even then, relative) disadvantage of this technique: if over time you want to rearrange the furniture, then perhaps the accent wall may be inappropriate for the new arrangement.

Tell us about your experience in creating accent walls in your interior. Is it difficult for an interior designer to act as a “customer” for himself?

— In the interior of my own apartment, we made accent walls in the living room behind the sofa and in the nursery. Although, to be honest, it seems to me that there are a lot of accent walls, since in one living room, combined with a hall, the walls are painted in 5 different colors: white, yellow, blue, blue and black tiles on the open wall above the working area of ​​the kitchen. All these walls are different in color, and looking from different viewpoints are accented. But, of course, the drawing behind the sofa attracts most of all.

Creating a drawing was an experiment for me personally. In general, I treat my own repair as an experiment. I try to try new things and don't get upset when I fail. Repair for me is a pleasure. By the way, in the last apartment, the accent in the interior was a black chalk wall, on which all guests who came to the house were required to leave an autograph. Having tried this technique with a chalk wall on myself, I often used it in the interior of clients.

I didn't use a stencil to draw Christmas trees on the wall above the sofa. I just drew the contours on the wall with a pencil, bought the right shade of paint and painted over the contours. In fact, I expected that the work would go faster than it actually turned out. It's just that it's physically very hard and my arm gets tired, but then my family came to my aid. And we are very pleased with the result!

We painted mountains in the interior of the nursery. The drawing was also without a preliminary sketch. Just outlined the contours with masking tape and painted over with paint. Here, by the way, my 5-year-old son helped a lot.

I have many artists I know who could help me paint the walls, but I decided I wanted to do it myself and enjoyed it.

My personal advice when creating an accent wall: don't be afraid. Especially if you draw on the wall yourself. No one knows how it should be, no one will judge you for inaccuracy. But it will make your interior not the same as everyone else's and really yours.

Was it difficult for me to act as a customer? At first, yes, when I could not determine the main idea of ​​the interior. But then I decided to treat myself and do what I ask from others: I collected references with the interiors I liked, caught the mood and tried to embody it. The implementation phase was easy. At the stage of the project is a little more difficult.

My interior is about travel. Not specifically, but at the level of associations and colors. The living room is about the forest, there is more bright and green. I really dream of putting a coffee table-stump there. Children's room about mountains and air, it is more blue. And there is a tent, and a round sconce imitates the sun. The bedroom will be about the sea. There is a scorching sun in a small bathroom, there is even a black floor, it is scorched by the sun, and the sink is in the shape of a pebble. And the big bathroom is about how you dived to the bottom of the sea: there is black and blue.
