8 Best Hand Mixers for 2022
We updated this story in August 2022 to ensure all picks tested and vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab were available, in stock and correctly priced.
Less expensive and more compact than a stand mixer, a handheld electric mixer is just the thing for whipping up an easy baking recipe or your favorite holiday dessert. A hand mixer is an important tool for any home cook or baker because it will whip, blend and mix a variety of foods — everything from mashed potatoes to buttercream frosting to egg whites.
While an immersion blender, food processor and blender can perform similar tasks to a hand mixer, like whipping eggs or emulsifying a dressing, there are still plenty of tasks that a hand mixer does best. Beating up light and fluffy frosting is just the beginning of what you can do with this tool. With a hand mixer, you can whip heavy cream and coconut milk into a fluffy coconut whipped cream to top coconut cream pie, create glossy soft peaks of egg whites for rainbow meringue sandwiches or cream butter and sugar for pumpkin spice cupcake batter.

How we test hand mixers
During our most recent test in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Culinary Innovation Lab, we tested 22 hand mixers in the Lab and at home. We mixed oatmeal cookie dough, beat yellow cake mix, kneaded white bread and whipped up egg whites and heavy cream. We assessed overall quality, variety of speeds, the ease of attaching the beaters, the comfort of holding hand mixers, the ease of using the controls and the cleanability.
We also consulted online reviews to see which hand mixers consumers were loving or having difficulties with. When making our picks, we also considered how intuitive each model was to use, as well as ergonomics and any useful features or included attachments.
What to consider when shopping for a hand mixer
✔️Comfort: A heavy hand mixer can tire your hand quickly. Look for lighter hand mixers with a comfortable grip if you intend on hand mixing a lot of recipes. We suggest going to a store to try lifting and holding the hand mixers on display, if possible. We recommend lightweight models like KitchenAid Cordless Hand Mixer or Cuisinart Power Advantage Plus 9-Speed Handheld Mixer.
✔️Accessories: All hand mixers come with detachable beaters, but only some hand mixers include with detachable whisks, dough hooks or even an immersion blender attachment. While additional attachments may make a model more expensive, they will give your hand mixer additional uses. It's also helpful to look for a hand mixer that comes with a storage container to house all the accessories so that you don’t lose any of the attachments between uses.
✔️Cord vs cordless: If you don’t have easy access to outlets in your kitchen, you may want to consider a cordless hand mixer. While you do have to remember to charge it regularly, a cordless model (or a swivel-cord model) allows ease of use by both right-handed and left-handed people.

Stand mixers are similar in appearance to hand mixers, but have a slightly different design. The thing is that in it, in addition to the mixer itself, a stand and a bowl are provided. The stand is used to support the device while leaving your hands free. This allows the hostess to do other things while the mixer whips or mixes food. During the operation of such a device, not only the nozzle, but also the stand can rotate, which ensures a more uniform mixing of the components.
Modern models of mixers are distinguished by the fact that in them the nozzles can rotate not only in the center, but also along other trajectories. Top Models of Planetary Mixers
A planetary mixer is a special kitchen appliance, the purpose of which is to mix products of any degree of viscosity. In fact, this is almost an ordinary mixer, but not quite. Its main feature is that in it the nozzle rotates not only around its axis, but additionally along a certain radius. This movement is somewhat reminiscent of the movement of the planets in the solar system, which, rotating around their axis, simultaneously move in orbit around the Sun. Hence, in fact, their exotic name came from.
At the very beginning, such devices were used only in large catering chains and industrial confectioneries. However, after the appearance of more compact devices that successfully combine high power and small size. Therefore, these devices are classified into industrial, semi-industrial and household.
1. Morphy Richards MixStar 400520
A parade of planets will form over your kitchen, heralding the most productive and technological phase of cooking - with the arrival of the innovative MixStar 400520 planetary mixer in the impeccable British design of Morphy Richards!
The device's 6 speed settings and 650W power don't take up a lot of space - no more than a roomy bowl and a whisk lying next to it! The optimized details of the MixStar 400520: the motor placed under the bowl and the organized container for storing accessories right in the bowl with a capacity of 4 l - make it an excellent example of rational use of space for a home of any size.
The efficiency and benefit of the mixer lies in saving time, its high-quality convenience, which you will immediately notice! By the way, the time is always monitored by a timer that automatically stops when the cycle stops.
Absolute splash protection with a transparent plastic dome works in its relative simplicity. A special hole in it allows you to add new ingredients to the bowl without stopping the processing process. Double mixing heads working in tandem rotate around their own axis and around the bowl, following the principle of the movement of celestial bodies. And the unique scraper attachment efficiently combines ingredients as you mix them, making long-term scraping off the sides of the bowl a thing of the past.

The best pulsed kitchen mixer
Among the many different models of mixers you can find those that have a pulse mode. Not every housewife has heard about the features of this mode, although everyone knows about the mode itself.
In fact, the presence of a pulse mode allows you to control the movement of the beaters by pressing the corresponding button. If you do not press hard, then the beaters will rotate at a low speed. The stronger the degree of pressing, the higher the frequency of their rotation. This feature is only available on a hand or stand mixer.
For home use, a mixer with 3 to 5 speed pulses is enough. This approach allows you to whip a large number of products at the same time, which, as you know, must be done with a gradual increase in the rotation speed.

A bowl with a volume of 5 liters will allow you to get at one time the amount, for example, of dough, sufficient to make a pie.
Advantages:
- excellent power;
- bulk bowl;
- easy maintenance;
- quality of materials and workmanship;
- stylish appearance;
- six rotation speeds.
Disadvantages:
- significant dimensions and weight.
3. Bosch MFQ 4020
Practically all similar devices of this brand come with specially designed beaters. And this pulse mixer is no exception. Their feature is the presence of four balls that create turbulent flows that capture air more intensively and contribute to the formation of more airy foam. Thus, the volume of whipped cream increases by 20%, and egg whites - by 50%. And it takes much less time to do so.
Advantages:
- good power 450 W;
- good equipment;
- low cost.
Disadvantages:
- there could be more tips.
What to look for when choosing a kitchen mixer
When choosing a quality kitchen mixer, you should be guided by the following criteria:
- Power . This characteristic affects the speed of rotation of the nozzles. For home use, 350-400 watts is enough.
- Number of speeds . For simple operations, 3 speeds will be enough. However, don't just look at it. The fact is that the efficiency of these very speeds depends on the power. Therefore, in low-power models, their optimal number is three. If there is a model where there are more of them, then they will still work in three-speed mode. But in more powerful models, the number of real speeds can reach 12.
- Modes . There can be three of them: normal, impulse and turbo. The latter differs in that it is possible to accelerate the rotation of the nozzles to the maximum limit in a very short period. It can be useful when preparing dough without lumps.
- Bowl size . The larger it is, the more product can be cooked at a time. However, it should be taken into account that the actual volume is always 0.5 liters less than that indicated by the manufacturer.
- Bowl material . There are two types: metal and plastic. Metal is the best.
- Contents . It can include several types of nozzles, as well as hooks, knives and a rotating bowl.
Which kitchen mixer is better to buy

5 Composition. In the package there are beaters and hooks, and some models come with timers, measuring cups, shovels, meat grinders, vegetable cutters and other accessories.
