Bedroom wall lighting ideas – 17 smart ways to light your space

We've curated the best bedroom wall lighting ideas to help you on your way to creating a dream bedroom scheme.

1. Set up wall lights beside the bed

'In smaller schemes, consider positioning a wall sconce or pendant on either side of the bed, as this will free up valuable table and floor space whilst drawing the eye upwards and giving the illusion of additional space,' explains Claire Anstey, Lighting Buyer at Heal’s . 'An elegant bedroom lighting idea, a fixture can also create a designer, boutique hotel room feel as it casts a warm glow throughout the space.'

2. Use wall lights in a small bedroom

(Image credit: Future / Jonathan Gooch)

‘Consider different types of lighting fittings, not just the light they provide,’ advises Peter Bowles, founder and MD, Original BTC . ‘Wall-mounted lights are great space-savers in small, low-ceilinged rooms and are a perfect small bedroom design idea for creating a clean, boutique hotel look.’

Remember to illuminate areas such as dressing tables, wardrobes and reading nooks, where more focused task lighting is required.

3. Choose a light that matches your decorating scheme

Lighting is no longer just functional; it has become a home accessory and sometimes even a design object. There are so many design-led lights out there with the purpose of injecting personality to your interior design. Don’t just stop with a cool shade when you plan bedroom lighting. Think about the fittings too, like the cord and cable. Make a statement with a bright-colored fabric electrical cord to add some punch and hang them purposefully low for a designer feel.

4. Add color with lighting

(Image credit: Beate Heuman / Simon Brown)

Wall-mounted swing-arm bedside lights are a neat way to provide direct and adjustable light for reading in bed, and make for great above the bed decor ideas. In a room deliberately conceived to not feel overly designed, interior designer Beata Heuman suggests choosing shades in different yet complementary colors.

5. Position wall lamps above the bed

(Image credit: Future / Alicia Taylor)

Negate the need for a bedside table by positioning wall lights above the bed. Opting for a lamp that can be wall-mounted allows you the freedom to move secondary furniture around more freely, such as bedside tables. It also means the space isn’t taken up, preventing you using the surface for cups, vases and books.

A big trend for homes, feature wall lighting can be creative, show-stopping or even a little whacky, depending on your style. It can also be used to illuminate shadowy areas and bring artwork or display items into focus. Try to think of the space as a blank canvas and work out where you have sources of natural light, and where you’ll need a helping hand.

‘The lights beside your bed are probably the most important in your home; used daily, they are essential all year round and, what's more, they are likely to be the most prominent accessories in your bedroom,’ says Lucinda Waterhouse, director at OKA .

7. Choose an on-trend metal lamp

(Image credit: Future / Jonathan Gooch)

Metallic finishes are as popular as ever, especially brass, the metal of the moment. Everything from bedroom ceiling lighting to wall lights, to table lamps – even light switches and dimmers with brass finishes – get full marks in the style stakes. With lighting designs being pared back to original shapes, single shade pendants are ideal for monochromatic and neutral bedroom schemes as they stand out.

8. Up your bedroom lighting scheme

(Image credit: Future / Paul Raeside)

‘Few things are more irritating than not having good-quality light to read by and sometimes a bedside wall light will do the job,’ says lighting designer Sally Storey of John Cullen Lighting .

Good lighting can make a small bedroom feel bigger or add intimacy to a larger room. Bedside lighting is a great idea for beds that you want to make a statement of, but ambient lighting isn’t always enough, so incorporate subtle additions with downlights or uplights.

9. Highlight characterful features

(Image credit: Future / Jonathan Gooch)

Downlights can be useful as a means of highlighting features, such as the artwork above the bed in this scheme. Choose a fitting with 360-degree rotation for extra flexibility.

10. Incorporate reading lights

(Image credit: Future / Alicia Taylor)

A colorful headboard like this one draws the eye in. A pair of discreet, fitted reading lights is an optional, practical addition. Left on before bedtime, they will highlight a striking bedstead as well providing task light. 'If you’re installing very practical and directional reading lights, make sure they are on separate circuits so that they can be controlled independently of the mood lighting,' advises interior designer Staffan Tollgård .

A wall light doesn't have to be simple, understated or discreet. As well as functional, lighting should be fun. If employing an interior designer, have them work architectural LED wall lights into your bedroom for a truly unique aesthetic. Wall lights that are LED lit are very energy efficient as they use a very minimal amount of power to maintain a high output of illumination.

12. Choose an adjustable option

(Image credit: Future / Adrian Briscoe)

The continuing popularity of industrial-style lighting, such as workshop adjustable wall lights, show no sign of letting up. 'These are particularly popular when combined with the traditional style filament light bulbs. The quality, output and colour of LEDs means that they will transform the way we light our homes,' explains Mark Holloway, Holloways of Ludlow .

13. Embrace natural materials

(Image credit: Kitesgrove / Mark Bolton Photography)

Introducing wall lamps with woven rattan shades in honey tones is a brilliant way to bring texture and warmth to blue bedrooms – while they may be naturally calming, myriad shades of blue can run the risk of feeling cold, especially in north facing bedrooms rooms.

'We have seen a growing trend of customers opting for natural materials in their lighting choices - a lovely touch as the illumination thrown around the room through a rattan or wicker shade can create a uniquely different feel than through fabric, often creating a more whimsical aesthetic,' says Helen Pett, design ambassador at Arteriors London .

As well as bringing vital texture to this stylish space, this wall light from Arteriors serves a key practical purpose helping to free up room on the bedside table, while its adjustable arm makes it ideal for bedtime reading.

14. Layer up a range of wall lights

Wall lights in a bedroom needn't just be about illuminating your bed for reading; they can have other decorative purposes, too.

'Here, a picture wall light creates yet another soft, glowing pool of light on the wall,' says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief of Homes & Gardens. 'Not only does it show off the artwork, but creates warmth, more layering and interest in the room. '

15. Choose matching shaded wall lamps

Framing a bed with a matching pair of shaded wall lights is guaranteed to ‘create an elegant tailored approach to the bedroom,’ explains Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky .

‘Keep bulbs shaded with material as opposed to glass, unless you want to use the light source for reading,’ she adds. Not only do fabric shades give a soft, ambient glow, they are a brilliant way to inject color and texture into a room. To add zest to a neutral bedroom consider teaming shades in an uplifting yellow alongside with vibrant cushions and throws.

‘If you’re a book lover, directional wall lights are far more effective than wall or table lamps with lampshades, but they are far less equipped to create warm, ambient light. Consider whether you have room to install both,' adds Rohan Blacker.

16. Fit a wall lamp to a bed frame

If you have a traditional bedroom furnished with a statement four-poster bed, then finding reading light options can be a challenge. In a clever solution, Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors has had wall lights discretely fitted into this bed frame to provide light for reading whilst the bed curtains were drawn. 'Make sure they can be switched off from either side of the bed,' she says. 'Vaughan make perfect flexi reading lights, which we often use.'

17. Save space with slimline sculptural wall lights

One of the greatest advantages of the wall lamp is its ability to save space, making it a popular bedroom lighting choice with many interior designers. ‘In small bedrooms I really like using wall lights as opposed to table lamps for bedside lighting. Smaller rooms inevitably call for smaller bedside tables and when the full surface is taken up by a table lamp it just seems to defeat the object,' explains Irene Gunter, founder and creative director, Gunter & Co .

'There’s such a wealth of amazing wall light options available, whether wired or plug in – they really allow us to add a statement to the space as well as maximise the surface available for the bits and bobs we like to store beside the bed. ’

Boasting simple sculptural curves, these contemporary wall lights are the perfect complement to this striking headboard design.

Where should wall lights be placed in a bedroom?

Wall lights are best positioned next to, or above, the bed. One on each side is the preferred choice in a double bedroom.

Think of wall lights as accent lights. On their own they probably won’t provide enough light, so it’s best to always consider using them in combination with another light source like ceiling lights or pendants. Most wall lights used to be hardwired and so are best to be planned as part of a renovation project.

However, lots of the newer ones lend themselves to a style where the visible wire is actually trendy and part of the design, especially when it comes to the industrial look. These are very easy to install by just fixing them to the wall, making them perfect for bedrooms.

How can I improve my bedroom lighting?

Bedroom lighting needs to be bright in the morning yet intimate and atmospheric at night to provide something of a restful sanctuary at the end of the day,’ advises Sally Storey, Creative Director at John Cullen Lighting.

One of Sally's top bedroom lighting tips is to consider circuits when planning your bedroom wall lighting ideas: ‘Whatever you do, be sure to have the lights on different circuits with switches by the bed. This is perhaps more important than in other rooms to avoid having to get out of bed to turn everything off.’

Wall sconces can be hung in the bedside area:

Mounting the first option is not advised, because while reading a person will block the light, casting a shadow.

It is recommended to place the sconces above the bed in the bedroom on the sides of the headboard at the same level and rather low. In this area of the room you need to adhere to soft, dim lighting. But it is also worth paying attention to the location of the switch for comfortable operation.

Compactness is a strong argument for installing a lighting fixture in a headboard. This type of fastening takes up a minimum of space, fits snugly to the surface. There are no protruding brackets.

Headboard shades can be matched to the color of the walls without being eye-catching. And located in the center above the bed, they become a highlight.

To create a designer accent with a lighting device, you need to choose a more massive lampshade, the main thing is to know when to stop. The choice of any option is suitable subject to the style direction of the room.

Above the bedside table

The most common solution is to install floor lamps on the furniture near the bed on both sides.

A wide range of fixed light sources allows you to choose a ceiling lamp with downward or bidirectional flow. The main advantage of these lamps is that there is no need to drill the wall with a sufficient number of sockets near the bed.

However, hanging lampshades and plafonds located above the bedside tables are gaining more and more popularity. The optimal mounting height is considered to be 50 cm from the surface of the bed.

This arrangement has several advantages:

Adjustable base lamps are quite flexible and allow you to adjust the lighting.

Expert opinion

Olga Kovalenko

Since 2010 I have been engaged in interior design and architectural design

Bendable lamps are suitable for a modern interior. Their design resembles a lantern. The priority of this model is that it has a small size, flexible base and can be fixed in any position. This design is attached both to the wall and to the bed frame.

Optimal placement of the luminaire

There are no specific requirements for the location of light sources in the room.

There are recommendations to help change the appearance, practicality and safety of the room:

  1. In the bedside area, the lighting should be placed at a level of no more than 120-180 cm.
  2. Wall sconces above the bed should be installed at a height of 20-30 cm above the back. With a headboard of 160 cm, chain or frame-mounted models are recommended.
  3. Depending on the height of the person, the appliance switch should be located at the level of the palm of an outstretched hand.
  4. For an upward beam, the lamp should be positioned lower. Accordingly, provided that the light is oriented downwards, the lampshade is mounted higher.
  5. The space around the dressing table needs more light. Therefore, here the backlight should be placed either at the top of the mirror, or on both sides. The direction of the beam must be even. Depending on the size of the dressing table, the number of light sources is selected.
  6. To ozonize space, pictures or photos, so that there are no glare or overexposed areas, it is recommended to use subdued light and a paired arrangement of devices.
  7. The void on the wall can be filled by placing several original candlesticks on it.
  8. To illuminate indoor plants, it is better to choose a plain shade.
  9. To visually increase the boundaries of the room, you should choose a sconce, the flow of which is directed upwards.
  10. In rooms with high ceilings, to create relaxation and coziness, it is desirable to give preference to lighting fixtures with a beam directed downwards.

Sconce Low Position

Headboard lamps placed low will create discomfort and dazzle the eyes, but a wall lamp with a lampshade mounted high also provides little light.

Therefore, in order to accentuate the sleeping place, it is desirable to install wall lamps on the sides of the bed. And to avoid injury to the eyes from the lamp, it is recommended to use electrical appliances with a closed design in the bedside area.

Multiple sconces

Designers, as well as people with a subtle sense of perception, create their own unique interior, emphasize the inner world and individuality, combining the incongruous.

Very temperamental people can decide on this, for whom a room designed in the same style will seem boring. For example, they can install several electrical appliances they like at once in one space.

Combination of different stylistic lamps in a certain room is possible if:

Tips & Tricks

Before you buy wall lamps, you should consider all the little things: mounting location, wiring design, color scheme, style, materials and overall design of the room.

When choosing an electrical appliance, the following criteria must be taken into account:

  • In order for the product to have good characteristics, when buying, it is important to pay attention to well-known and trusted manufacturers, as well as the availability of a quality certificate, safety and instructions in Russian.
  • The product model of a lighting device should not only be easy to use, but also be in harmony with the environment in the room, fit into the style direction of the room. For example, choosing green and blue shades will give the bedroom a cold, gloomy touch.
  • Keep in mind the convenience when using the appliance. It is best to turn the light on and off without getting out of bed and pressing a key. There is also a trick for those who like to sleep in a chair - installing a lighting device with a motion sensor.
  • If you like to read or work in a horizontal position, it is better to choose a light source on brackets. Otherwise, it will be necessary to adjust to the beam flow.
  • When choosing a light bulb, you can give preference to different types of lighting. However, the location of the backlight should be considered. So, matte lamps (incandescent) are recommended to be installed near the dressing table. Halogen and LEDs create yellow lighting, while fluorescents do not convey the color gamut correctly. In the headboard area, it is desirable to give preference to LED lamps, as they do not heat up, do not blink, create soft light, and are economical.
  • The presence of a rheostat in the device will make it possible to change the intensity of illumination. This is especially convenient if there is a baby cot in the room. And the minimum power of the device will turn it into a night light. But in such shades you should not use energy-saving lamps.
  • Bulbs should be taken with a power of 40-75 W for the bedside area and 100 W for the rest of the room.

How to arrange lighting?

Before planning the lighting design in the bedroom, designers are advised to determine the position of the room relative to the cardinal points, as well as the role that lighting plays for the owner of the house.

Which lamps to choose for the bedroom?

The modern market is replete with a variety of lighting products. Each of them is designed for specific purposes, and choosing products for comfortable room lighting is not difficult.

Chandelier

It is considered the most popular and most necessary electrical appliance for creating basic lighting. It is recommended to choose the size of the chandelier according to the area of the room. In a small room, a multi-tiered model will be inappropriate: most likely, a disproportionate chandelier will put pressure on you psychologically. By the way, Feng Shui experts share the same opinion: it is believed that a product with an abundance of various decorative elements above the bed interferes with a restful sleep.

To calculate the size of the chandelier, the designers came up with a simple formula: the length of the room is added to the width and multiplied by 10. That is, for a bedroom with parameters of 4x4 m, it is recommended to buy a product with a diameter of about 80 cm. with an airy round chandelier that gives soft light.

In a bedroom with a high ceiling, the use of products on chains or suspensions is functionally justified: the light becomes more directional if it is closer to the bottom of the room. But flat ceiling chandeliers without frills are more appropriate in rooms with a low ceiling.

Sconce

Wall lamps with a horn (a long tube with a cartridge attached to the end), giving a subdued light, are usually located on both sides of the bed. The optimal distance from the floor is 1.5 m. Best of all, sconces with lampshades fit into Provence and classic style. Perfect for those who like to read before bed. Sometimes used to turn off the general light when getting out of bed.

In the photo, there are sconces installed at the head, which harmoniously fit into the delicate interior.

Spots

Designers love these inexpensive and stylish lamps for their simplicity and functionality. They help to illuminate the desired areas by directing the beam of light with the help of swivel arms. Recently, spots on track guides have been in fashion, which in exceptional cases can replace a chandelier. They suit most modern interiors, are appropriate in a Scandinavian setting, as well as in a loft-style bedroom.

Spot lighting

Usually represented by recessed ceiling lights. They are chosen as an alternative to a chandelier or act as additional lighting. They can be turned on all at once or in separate groups, which means that in a matter of seconds you can adjust the degree of illumination, creating the right mood.

The photo shows a room with an interesting embodiment of a design idea: there is no chandelier, and the black stretch ceiling is illuminated by large spotlights.

It is necessary to determine the number of products before installing the stretch ceiling. The minimum distance between them should be 30 cm.

Lighting

As a rule, excessive light in the bedroom turns the rest room into an uncomfortable room, reminiscent of a shop window. Of course, if the owner of the apartment is a fan of high-tech style, such a scenario will not stop him. In other cases, it is better to keep a balance and limit yourself to a couple of zones highlighted by light.

LED strip is usually used for illumination. Its price is low, and installation does not take time and effort. If there is a TV in the bedroom, it is worth using tape behind its body so that the eyes do not strain while watching a movie.

Illumination is indispensable when you want to highlight a particular area without cluttering up the space with lamps. It can be easily combined with other types of lighting fixtures.

The photo shows a good example of a combination of spot lighting in the bedroom and lighting.

Lighting options

Let's take a closer look at how to use lighting fixtures, as well as get acquainted with original bedroom lighting ideas.

Central lighting

General (or central) light is represented not only by the chandelier. Modern interiors can only be dispensed with spotlights or pendant lights on a long cord. But this approach requires professionalism.

The geometric center of the room is considered the most correct location for the chandelier. The best option for the bedroom is indirect diffused light that does not hit the eyes.

Not even the brightest chandelier can cope with lighting the bedroom alone: the space will seem boring, uneven, textures will be blurry in the far corners of the room. That is why additional lamps are needed at other levels.

The photo shows a modern bedroom interior, the general lighting of which is represented by a chandelier, and additional - by table lamps and pendant lamps.

Illumination of functional areas

Organization of local lighting requires thoughtfulness on the part of the owner of the bedroom. It is worth deciding in advance where the lamps will be needed.

The bedside area is the second most important after the central lighting. In bed, you can read books, work on a laptop, chat and get ready for bed. In addition to wall sconces, designers often use pendant lights, as well as spotlights and floor lamps. Table lamps are also popular - they are successfully used not only in the work area, but also near the bed.

Pictured is a cozy bedside area with illuminated shelves and headboard.

If you plan to store things in the bedroom (in a dressing room or closet), you should think about lighting these areas. It will save time and nerves if two people live in the room and get up at different times of the day.

It is also recommended to illuminate the installed dressing table, because natural light is not always available. Devices with soft light without shadows and contrasts should be located on both sides of the mirror at eye level. In order not to distort the complexion, you should choose white shades.

The photo shows a bedroom, the light and design of which is thought out to the smallest detail. The bedside area is illuminated by two types of lamps. The desktop has its own light sources and places to store personal items.

Light zoning not only gives comfort, but also saves energy. If possible, it is worth putting dimmers that regulate the level of illumination.

In the photo, the local lighting of the loft-style bedroom is represented by table lamps and a floor lamp.

Decorative

The purpose of such lighting is to decorate the bedroom and create the right atmosphere. You can highlight:

By playing with light, you can create an original, memorable and at the same time functional interior.

The photo shows a triptych of graphic paintings illuminated by dots: this technique turns the drawings into a work of art.

Design for a small bedroom

When choosing lighting for a small bedroom, you should remember the main thing: the only light source narrows the space even more, creating dark corners, which means that multi-level lighting cannot be neglected.
