Bedroom flooring is also a big investment which is not easy to change once installed, so it's important that the style you choose has enduring appeal.

One of the key decisions to make when it comes to wood floor ideas for a bedroom is what type to choose. Luxurious and long-lasting, solid hardwood offers unrivalled character and timeless charm plus can wear beautifully with age.

Capturing the look of solid wood, but with the ability to be used over underfloor heating, engineered wood is a popular option for bedrooms where comfort is key. Alternatively, wood effect options such as luxury vinyl tile are perfect for bringing the character of wood without the maintenance needs.

1. Choose pale wood for an warm, bright feel

Bedrooms are private spaces where we relax and unwind, so it's important that calm prevails. Opting for a pale timber with a gentle grain as part of a neutral bedroom scheme is guaranteed to create a restorative, restful feel.

If you love light colored woods then the bedroom can be a great place to showcase them explains Amina Kamara, Chelsea showroom manager at Havwoods .

'In general, lighter colored floors will require more upkeep than darker or more varied colors in a higher traffic area, so a lighter floor is suitable for a bedroom, whereas a living room or dining area would be better suited to a dark color palette.'

2. Choose wide planks for a simple look

When choosing wood floor ideas for a bedroom one of the key decisions to make is whether you want a traditional plank style format or a patterned design. For those looking to create a simple bedroom then choose straight-laid planks for a clean, streamlined look.

'An oak plank floor with few knots and grain structure variations will give a uniform, architectural look whereas a two-strip (two staves of wood per floorboard) will give much more variation and expression,' suggests Richard Aylen, technical manager at Junckers,

If opting for a plank design it's also important to consider the width of the planks as this can impact the look and feel of the space. 'Wide board plank floors will give a more uniform look, especially if you choose a Classic grade with very few color and grain pattern variations,' he adds.

3. Add texture with decorative grain

If you're looking to add texture to a bedroom then consider a wood with plenty of grain variation and knotting as well as designs make up of thinner planks. Wood flooring with highly decorative grains are a brilliant foundation for rustic bedrooms which are characterized by their abundance of natural materials.

Some wood flooring companies grade their timbers by how textured they are to make it easier to for consumers to decide. How varied the grain of the timber is depends on what part of the tree it is from, explains Richard Aylen at Junckers.  'We have three grades, Classic, Harmony and Variation. The Classic grade is made from the innermost part of the tree, where there is less variation in pattern and color; Variation is made from the outer part of the tree which has more changes and differences; Harmony in the middle. All the colorations and grain patterns occur naturally in the timber and its personal choice as to which one you go for.'

4. Bring warmth to monochrome schemes

Laying a wood floor is a beautiful way to bring warmth and texture to black and white bedrooms as demonstrated in this sophisticated space. While decorating with black and white is timeless and elegant, it can cause spaces to feel stark and lifeless, but a wood floor in a rich chestnut brown will be the perfect antidote.

5. Add pattern with herringbone parquet

Suitable for both contemporary and traditional bedrooms, herringbone wood flooring is a fabulous way to bring a touch of pattern and a timeless feel to interiors.

'In the past decade, the herringbone pattern has become extremely popular, showing no signs of abating. It’s an elegant flooring choice and the play between the strict geometric forms and the natural pattern of the wood is hard to beat,' says Richard Aylen at Junckers.

With its soft, honeyed coloring this oak parquet brings beautiful warmth and texture to this blue bedroom.

6. Zone spaces with different laying patterns

When deciding on wood floor ideas for a bedroom it's a good idea to think about the spaces that connect to it, too, such as en suites and walk-in closets. Using the same tone of wood throughout is a great way to unify these spaces and creative visual harmony.

In this apartment by Kasha Paris , both the bedroom and closet feature the same warm-toned wood, but the two areas have been subtly defined using a mix of straight-laid and herringbone designs.

7. Choose a dark wood for an atmospheric look

Dark colors can be well suited to bedrooms, helping to create a cocooning and intimate feel. To prevent dark bedroom ideas feeling too austere try adding a wood floor which is rich in texture with deep, warm coloring such as these Burmese wood planks from Ted Todd.

8. Warm up the space with a rug

Wood flooring can leave bedrooms feeling cold underfoot, but adding a deep pile bedroom rug will instantly bring a layering of warmth and softness for a cozy feel, plus they can help muffle sound too, helping to create a relaxing environment conducive to sleep. This Berber style design is the perfect finishing touch to a bohemian bedroom scheme.

9. Maximize light with a white wood floor

Helping to reflect light, painting a wood floor white is an easy way to instantly brighten up a small bedroom but also makes a beautiful foundation for a coastal bedroom scheme.

If painting a wood floor, 'it is essential to use a specially formulated floor paint that will be durable and hardwearing,' says Ruth Mottershead of Little Greene. 'For soft woods, knots should be sealed with a wood primer to prevent staining.'

10. Create a feature floor

Painting the floor is an easy way to create a playful feature in a kids' room. You could try painting each plank in different color, or try a checked pattern to give a nod to a circus theme.

Is wooden flooring good for a bedroom?

Wooden flooring is a good choice for a bedroom as it is both stylish and practical. As well as being hardwearing and durable, wood comes in a huge array of colors, grains and finishes and can make a timeless foundation for both traditional and contemporary spaces.

Being a natural material is also a benefit, explains Robert Walsh, founder and owner, Ted Todd Floors. 'When it comes to the bedroom, wood floors work beautifully as they are one of the most traditional and natural types of flooring. Bringing in a touch of nature and the great outdoors, they can really help to transform your bedroom into a calming and relaxing escape.'

'It’s important to make sure your subfloor is in good condition. It should be flat to within 3mm in a 2m radius, structurally sound, free of squeaks and free of protruding fasteners,' adds Robert Walsh.

Which wooden flooring is best for bedroom?

Which wooden flooring is best for a bedroom is dependant on many factors, from the size of the room to whether you want to create a contemporary or traditional look.

Luckily, wood flooring comes in a host of designs and can be laid in a wide array of patterns, offering scope to create myriad different looks and styles, from sleek and modern straight-laid designs to decorative parquet designs. 'You can make a real statement with a herringbone or chevron design or allow the floor to blend seamlessly with your existing décor with a plank format,' explains Robert Walsh.

Luxurious and authentic, high quality solid hardwood options can last for generations. When it comes to species, 'oak, ash, beech and maple are all hardwood timber species, very hard-wearing and ideal for use as flooring,' says 'When made in hardwood through and through, a wood floor can be sanded and refinished several times to good-as-new condition, or to add a new colour or surface treatment to give it a completely new look says Richard Aylen, Junckers’ technical manager.

Equally sturdy and durable and offering the look of solid timber, engineered wood can be fitted over underfloor heating which can often give it the edge when it comes to creating a cozy bedroom environment.

Top Bedroom Flooring Ideas for Every Budget

Price is always a concern when choosing a flooring material, especially for a bedroom where comfort and beauty are of paramount importance. Luckily, you'll find a variety of cost-effective bedroom flooring ideas that can fulfill the requirements of your serene setting and add value to the space.

Versatile Vinyl

Price: $0.50–$4 per square foot; $7 per square foot for luxury vinyl planks

Vinyl is one of the most versatile and cheapest ways to cover a bedroom floor. Composed of thin resilient sheets, vinyl is a synthetic material that is resistant to stains, rips, tears, damage, and water penetration. It can be printed with a nearly endless variety of patterns and colors, and it can even be made to resemble natural materials, such as stone and hardwood. So you have almost endless options to choose which color flooring is best for your bedroom—whether you want a soothing tone or a unique pattern.

If you use sheet vinyl or tile vinyl, the flooring will be thin and can feel hard if it's placed directly over plywood. In a bedroom, a cork or foam padded underlayment can be used to soften the feel beneath your feet. However, underlayment can significantly add to the cost of the installation.

For an upscale look in the bedroom, consider luxury vinyl flooring (LVF), also known as luxury vinyl plank (LVP). It's a thicker material fabricated in planks to look much like hardwood. And it snaps together, much like plastic laminate flooring planks, for a snug fit. While it costs more, luxury vinyl flooring will also add more value to your home than basic sheet vinyl or vinyl tile.

If you choose vinyl for your bedroom floor, remember that it is a synthetic material that can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can compromise the air quality of your room for a short time.

Natural Linoleum

Price: $2–$5 per square foot

Linoleum in tile or sheet form can be a comfortable choice for bedroom flooring. The design options for linoleum have expanded over the years, and now it can replicate natural materials as well as take on artistic patterns to match your decor.

Linoleum is a thin sheet of resilient flooring material with properties that are similar to vinyl. It is durable, resistant to stains, difficult to scratch, and easy to maintain. The difference is that linoleum tile is made from all-natural linseed oil, and it does not use non-renewable resources in its manufacturing process the way vinyl does. You also don’t have to worry about the off-gassing of VOCs.

Linoleum is a little more expensive than vinyl, and it will also need a padded backing layer to make it comfortable enough for a bedroom. The material is also slightly less durable than vinyl, and it doesn’t have the same impervious resistance to water penetration.

Durable Laminate

Price: $2–$10 per square foot

Laminate flooring in the bedroom has its pros and cons. It's a frugal choice with unlimited and attractive design options, but it can be hard and noisy to walk on. So in that regard, it is better to have carpet over laminate in the bedroom if you're choosing between the two.

Laminate consists of a backing layer, a decorative layer, and a wear layer. The backing is generally made of recycled, low-cost materials that make up the bulk of the actual laminate. The appearance of each piece is achieved by printing a very thin decorative strip over the top of this backing. This is then covered by an invisible wear layer that protects the material from stains and damage.

The manufacturers of laminate flooring materials are able to produce print layers that can accurately achieve the look of numerous natural hardwoods and stones. Because of this, you can use laminate to create a bedroom floor that looks far more expensive than it actually is.

However, the material can't be refinished, so its lifespan is limited to the durability and quality of its protective wear layer. When the wear layer breaks down, the material will be exposed and will quickly start to deteriorate. However, laminate flooring can last longer than usual in a low-traffic bedroom.

Cushiony Carpet

Price: $3–$13 per square foot (wall-to-wall, not including padding)

Soft, plush, cozy carpeting is one of the best types of flooring for a bedroom not only for comfort, but also because the material is sound-dampening and retains warmth. There are plenty of pros and cons to carpeting in the bedroom. Most notably, the price of carpet for a bedroom can vary widely. The most luxurious plush wall-to-wall carpeting—the kind that feels great on bare feet in a bedroom—can end up costing more than most other flooring materials.

There are ways to buy medium- to high-pile carpet for your bedroom while sticking to a budget. For example, choose an inexpensive synthetic fiber rather than wool. Or look for closeouts and in-stock styles at a carpet warehouse.

Note that carpets are notoriously hard to keep clean, especially the ones with a higher pile. They can attract dust, dirt, and other particles that can contribute negatively to the indoor air quality of your bedroom. So keep this in mind if you're debating whether you prefer carpet or hardwood floors in your bedroom.

Tip

If your heart is set on carpet for the bedroom, consider a large area rug rather than wall-to-wall carpeting. You'll still get the softness and sound-dampening like you would full carpeting but for a fraction of the cost. Take measurements of your room before buying a large area rug to make sure it can be ideally situated under your bed and bedside tables.

Decorative Concrete

Price: $1 per square foot for a fresh pour; $2–$15 per square foot for decorative etching and artistic treatments

You probably wouldn't think of concrete as a good bedroom flooring idea, but it has its perks. If you live in a warm climate in a home that's built with a concrete slab foundation resting directly against the ground, you might be able to remove the existing floor surface coverings and use the existing concrete as an economical option for your floor. The concrete will help to keep your bedroom cool, and it's very easy to keep clean.

Concrete also will last for a very long time and is extremely durable and resilient. Plus, you can have it decoratively finished with stains, etching, and polishing to create a flooring color that's best for your bedroom space. And to make it warmer and easier on the feet, you can throw down some area rugs.

Hardwood Options

Price: $5–$12 per square foot; refinishing $1.50–$5 per square foot; engineered hardwood $4–$7 per square foot

Hardwood is an expensive bedroom flooring material. However, it is quite popular for its warmth and natural beauty. And hardwood is generally the flooring that adds the most value to a home, so you should see a return on your investment. To save money, you can opt to refinish existing hardwood floors instead of replacing them, or you can choose a less expensive engineered wood floor.

Engineered hardwood is not solid hardwood, though it's constructed with layers of solid hardwood. Think of it as a durable veneer-style flooring. Engineered hardwood flooring is designed so it won't warp or bow like hardwood, and it should have a protective moisture barrier. So you'll get all the beauty of hardwood, along with easy care and maintenance.

As with vinyl and laminate, an engineered wood floor depends on the quality and durability of its top wear layer. But in a low-traffic bedroom, that should mean it lasts a long time. Also, as with natural hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood can creak and pop. So take that into consideration if you're looking for a quiet bedroom floor.

FAQ

Flooring for the bedroom - which is better, 9 tips - which is better to make the floor in the bedroom

What if getting out of bed was more pleasant than sleeping in it? How to achieve this is the subject of a separate discussion.

Each of us has our own idea of the perfect bedroom, and it's not just the bed that matters. What matters is how to approach it: some people like to sink their feet into a deep pile, others like to touch bare boards with their bare feet, and still others like to knock on stone slabs with their heels.

One way or another, being in this room, we listen to tactile sensations. Therefore, the choice of flooring is not just a matter of visual perception and aesthetic preferences. These are emotions and pleasure that are born when feet touch oak, maple or wenge…

Ecological cleanliness
We are guaranteed to spend a third of the day in the bedroom, and it is better if a healthy atmosphere reigns there, free from dust , odors and chemically unsafe volatile substances (even in concentrations less than the maximum allowable norm). Do you know how all kinds of formaldehydes get into the air of the apartment? Many people think that all this is the result of evaporation from the surfaces of synthetic materials or decorative finishes applied at the factory. Or, at least, from the surfaces of handicraft gizmos.

However, things are much more complicated: the biggest danger is chemical solvent paints applied to the floor surface at home. Drops of foul-smelling lacquer or alkyd paint flow between the planks or boards during the varnishing of the floor. They are covered on the outside with a hard film and after years they release a solvent. And we? We inhale toxic fumes.

A simple tip will help you protect your health: varnish and paint only with water-based compounds (those that do not require the evacuation of children, flowers and animals during repairs). Or cover the wooden floor with oil - it does not contain any chemical solvents that are hazardous to health.

Carpet - tactile
If you think soft flooring is what you want, then carpet is a must. Unlike a regular carpet, this roll covering is attached to the base of the floor with double-sided tape. Carpeting will not only bring tactile pleasure, but will improve sound and heat insulation in the room as a whole.

On the other side of the scale is a pound of dust, which collects in a thick pile and can become a source of allergic reactions. But it is much easier to get rid of this dust with a good washing vacuum cleaner than to collect the same pound from the atmosphere later (although the manufacturers of "air washers" insist on the opposite).

Three types of flooring for wood lovers
Warm to the touch, wood flooring is extremely versatile. This is also traditional parquet, whose laying pattern forms small parquet slabs. And a massive board with a length of 50 cm to 2 m or more - this is laid with a “deck”. And parquet board: a modern multi-layer material that is resistant to operating conditions. Decorativeness is present only in its upper layer, which reduces the cost of the floor, even if it is made of exotic wood. In addition, due to the integrity of the upper layer, the material is indistinguishable from the array. But the decorative layer on the factory board can be placed in completely different ways - manufacturers even produce options similar to parquet.

Yoga lovers - plug
Do you regularly do gymnastics on the floor in the bedroom? Do you love walking barefoot? Most likely, natural cork, a warm and elastic coating, will suit you.

Modern technology makes it possible to form sheet products from crumbs of cork oak bark and cover them with decorative compositions. Wear-resistant and elastic cork floor immediately has a set of useful properties: it is hypoallergenic, does not absorb odors (for example, cigarette smoke) and does not require complex maintenance. Unlike, say, laminate or inexpensive hardwood flooring, cork does not accumulate static electricity and does not collect dust - this means that you will forget about balls of dust that has come from nowhere, flying around the house like poplar fluff.

Walking around the bedroom in high heels? Take a closer look at the laminate
On a massive floor and parquet under the pressure of the studs, dents will remain: many types of wood do not have sufficient hardness to withstand this. Heels are not afraid of laminate - the leader in hardness and wear resistance among modern floor coverings.

Its top layer (“overlay”) contains corundum, one of the hardest minerals on earth. Under it is a decorative layer of melamine impregnated paper, thanks to which the design of such a floor is able to exceed the wildest expectations, although photographic images of wood and stone textures are popular. Finally, the basis of the material is a solid HDF board, which rests on a balancer. From the bottom, some brands also have a soundproofing layer.

However, to protect the neighbors from below from the sound of your heels, you need something else: when installing the laminate, you need to lay an additional layer of acoustic insulator on the subfloor.

WOKAI Design

Anti-vandal coating
What if your dream is guarded by a devoted dog? Or a hyperactive kitten running wildly around the bedroom at night? You definitely need a durable material that will protect the floor surface from scratches.

Fortunately, there are many options. It can be not only familiar hardwoods such as oak or ash, but also exotic woods, most of which are also famous for their hardness. It can be a laminate, and self-leveling floor, and ceramic tiles.

It is worth noting that ceramic tiles and porcelain stoneware are also ideal in terms of cleanliness. But then do not forget to take care of heating using the "warm floor" technology.

Michele Lee Willson Photography

If the bedroom is combined with a bathroom
In this case, you need moisture-resistant floors: they are stone (as in the photo) or ceramic. And the heat will be given by a cable or water heating system.

Green Building Supply

What if you need everything at once?
Let's say you've Googled interior photos and floor descriptions and realized that you'd like a natural finish that's warm and durable at the same time. And so that there are no joints where water can penetrate. There is a solution - natural linoleum!

This material, unlike its many synthetic counterparts, is made from linseed oil, pine resin, wood flour, mineral fillers and dyes, as in previous centuries. Natural linoleum is environmentally friendly, wear and fire resistant, easy to install and maintain, and is not afraid of water.

One drawback: the decor of the coating is not very diverse. You can choose from muted, subdued colors, or opt for a single ornament - "salt and pepper".

Chris Dyson Architects

Listen and do it your way
You can talk all you want about coatings that are sustainable, good for your health and that don't hurt your budget. But, if you want something original, listen to your heart. A wooden floor covered with gold paint, painted for you personally by an artist, or a chic version of natural stone. Yes, even from natural crocodile or snake skin in the form of handmade piece tiles. Whatever - the main thing is that you are delighted with such a floor, because this is your most comfortable bedroom in the world.

Private house flooring - 70 photos of unusual floor designs for the homeDecor and interior design

Decor and interior design > Site map > Floor decoration > Floor in a private house - 70 photos of ideas on how to make the perfect floor During the construction of the house, the first thing that focuses on is the installation of the floor. Thermal insulation and safety depend on the quality and strength of the coating.

There are several ways to make a floor in a private house. Each has its positive and negative sides.

Before starting work, you should weigh the pros and cons and choose the best option. Can be distinguished:

Wooden floor on poles

Wood is one of the safest, most environmentally friendly materials. For flooring, it can be installed in different ways. Most often, logs are used that are embedded in the walls of the room.

If the use of lags is not possible, the floors are made using support pillars. This type of work is called "floating floor".

Brick posts must be installed to start work. They are buried in the underground plane of the house. The distance between them should be no more than one meter. The higher the support, the wider the pit is formed.

Finished pits are covered with crushed stone, filled with water and heavily thrombosed. The reliability of the support depends on the quality of work at this stage. A brick pillar is placed on the rammed surface, into which anchors are fastened with threads. All work is done according to the level.

Beams are installed on top, covered with waterproofing. To provide the house with additional heat, it is better to make the floor two-layer, but floorboards can be attached directly to the beams.

Wooden floor on the ground

The second option for installing a wooden floor is to lay the floorboards directly on the prepared soil pad. Crushed stone, sand or gravel is used as a pillow.

The material is carefully compacted and waterproofed on top. For this, roofing material is used, it is possible not in one layer for reliability.

Insulation serves as the basis for installing the beams. The supports should not be further than 60 cm from each other. Insulation can be used. For this purpose, foam is indispensable, which retains heat well.

Next is the laying of the floorboards. To provide the room with ventilation, you need to fasten the extreme boards at a distance of a couple of centimeters from the wall.

Subfloor

The floor in a private house needs additional insulation. Depending on the material chosen for the insulation of the subfloor, its installation is different. When expanded clay is used, priority is given to a solid plank floor. When choosing mineral wool for insulation, subfloors are attached to the bottom of the beams.

The vapor barrier must be fixed. Thermal insulation is often limited on both sides with thin plywood. And already a permanent floor is laid on top of it.

Wooden floor on screed

If the floor is laid on a concrete screed, it is possible to attach the joists directly to the concrete or to special studs. Lags must be performed thoroughly. Duration of operation of a covering depends on their durability.

A floor based on a concrete screed is made only with two layers. The floor scheme in a private house requires additional insulation.

Thin insulation is laid on the screed itself, and a more solid layer, such as foam, should follow in front of the floorboards.

You can do the work on installing the floor on concrete with your own hands. If you have the tools, this won't be difficult. The logs are anchored on a concrete base. Laying waterproofing and insulation is also required in this case.

Concrete floor

Installing a concrete floor does not differ much from the above techniques. The only condition for its use is brick or concrete walls of the house.

First, a rough screed is made, several layers of roofing material are laid on top of it, followed by insulation and insulation. This is followed by the installation of a reinforcing mesh and a finishing screed. At this point, you can make a warm floor.

On top of the finished screed, the floor is covered with linoleum or laminate.

Dry screed Dry screed is the fastest way to finish the floor in a private house. Its essence lies in the use of dry matter. It is placed evenly on the plane. Bottom needs to be insulated. Thick plywood slabs are laid on top of the frozen dry screed.

The boards are laid in several layers. The whole structure is mounted with self-tapping screws. The surface can be covered with any modern material that suits the wishes of customers.

The photo of the floor in a private house shows a variety of surface finishes. Many of the ways you can do it yourself. For the rest, you will have to turn to specialists.
