Bathroom trends come and go, but these timeless designs are very much here to stay for 2023 and beyond. From fluted finishes to forest green, these are the latest bathroom trends to take note of for your bathroom remodel – or simple room update.
While following – and applying – the latest trends isn't a guarantee of achieving a timeless look, these bathroom ideas and bathroom pictures are, we think, elegant enough to stand the test of time.
Whether you are planning on updating your master bathroom, or small bathroom, we can help you with a vast array of bathroom ideas to suit your taste, from bathroom colors and materials to finishes and shapes.
Below, we look at the biggest trends in bathroom design to inspire your next bathroom redesign. Plus, we have selected the world's top bathroom and design experts to offer you unrivaled bathroom planning advice.
1. Create a space to linger
(Image credit: Nicola Harding and Studio Faeger)
Bathroom trends for 2023 will see an increase in wellness spaces that are fully prepped for spa-style pampering.
A spa bathroom may not seem the obvious home for upholstered seating but if you are planning to enjoy serious R&R in there it makes perfect sense. Painting toenails, lotioning legs, flicking through a magazine, or waiting for a face mask to set – all moments where comfortable seating will prove far more decadent than perching on a cold toilet seat.
In this warm, inviting bathroom, a generous conversation seat encourages lingering in a big way. Reupholstered in vintage striped fabric in similar tones to the tadelakt walls, it’s big enough to accommodate a shared pampering session or family catch-up at the end of the day.
2. Surround yourself with natural materials
‘Surrounding yourself with natural materials such as wood is a great way to subliminally boost positive emotions,’ says Barrie Cutchie, design director, BC Designs .
‘It has been proven that spending time outdoors and within nature – where wood is plentiful – has a positive impact on our mental health, and by bringing it into the home, we can replicate those same benefits on a smaller scale.’
Here, natural teak has been introduced in a modern, slatted design that lends laid-back Japanese-influenced vibes. ‘Teak’s natural oil helps it to resist water and aging well, making it a great timber choice for bathrooms,’ adds Barrie.
3. Quieten the mind with a white color scheme
Widely associated with calmness, a white bathroom color scheme will quieten the mind and soothe the soul. Steer away from clinical whites and go for off-white surfaces with tactile appeal, like these zellige tiles by Clé. The hand-cut edges, color variation, and undulating glaze celebrate imperfections and shimmer light through the space.
‘We defined the “wet” and “dry” areas using a border and stopped the tile short of the ceiling to imply a frieze,’ adds Rustam Mehta, co-founder and partner of GRT Architects . A built-in seat in the shower provides a place to linger amid the tranquil atmosphere.
4. Bring curves back
Move over slim profiles and hard angles – voluptuous curves are where the most desirable bathroom are heading for 2023.
Maximize the shape of an outsized mirror by continuing the line on molded plasterwork behind. ‘Moldings that soften straight lines represent the best of contemporary biophilic design and provide a three-dimensional effect with purity and softness,’ enthuses Sara Ramundo, product design manager, Devon&Devon .
Circular bathroom mirror ideas are obvious contenders to lead this smart surface approach but also consider lozenge and arched designs, which work particularly well in smaller bathrooms. Clean, crisp molded lines are key, so do seek out an experienced plasterer, ideally, one specializing in waterproof materials like tadelakt, which is ideal in moisture-rich spaces.
5. Introduce texture
Raw organic finishes look fabulous in bathrooms – giving them a tactility that is truly captivating.
Give your feet a tactile treat with reclaimed terracotta, the older the better. Repurposed from salvaged bricks, the terracotta flooring in this bathroom is a rustic, eco-friendly option that’s lifted by vibrant jewel-green walls and light-boosting glass. ‘What you can be sure of with terracotta is that it is warming, thanks to its rich Siena-style colors and earthy texture,’ says Hamish Smith, creative director, Artisans of Devizes . ‘We also love how it builds up a patina over time. In other words, the more you use it, the better, and more lived-in, it will look,’ adds Hamish.
6. Use textiles in bathrooms
‘Aesthetics are just as important as practical elements when it comes to creating an inviting bathroom,’ says interior designer Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors , who adds that she is wary of cold, hard finishes.
‘I tend to avoid floor tiles, except in wet room settings or in family bathrooms used by young children or teenagers where the floor might get drenched. In old houses that have their original floorboards, my preference is to keep these in place and lay an antique bathroom rug on top, which instantly makes the room feel warmer.’
If you are concerned about water damage, you may prefer to opt for a performance rug made from polypropylene or recycled plastic, designed to be water-resistant, hardwearing and easy to clean, such as those by Unnatural Flooring and Weaver Green.
7. Take a seat
Shower rooms should be more than just functional, they should also be beautiful, too. Forget fast, furious showering against the clock, the rising demand for seats and stools inside the showering area is shifting the emphasis from speed to chilled-out me-time. ‘Seating in the shower adds a new level of comfort,’ says Louisa Morgan, creative director, Mandarin Stone .
8. Mix concealed and open storage elements
(Image credit: Porter Bathroom / Trunk Floor)
The latest way to bump up storage in the bathroom involves a two-pronged approach: concealed versus eye candy. ‘Adding hidden bathroom storage solutions at the planning stage will keep the overall design sleek, while allowing the space to be functional,’ says designer Lisa Persse of Porter Bathroom . ‘In this bathroom bespoke cupboards look like wall paneling, concentrating the focus on the vanity unit.’
9. Introduce privacy with smoked glass
The 70s called – they want their smoked glass back. Insiders are heralding the revival of this 70s staple, and the focus is on shower screens.
‘As well as being beautiful, smoked glass has a very cool retro edge that we love,’ says Jordan Cluroe of 2LG Studio , at the launch of new enclosure brand Sealskin Duka. ‘It works well in so many different design styles and offers a strong impact when paired with color,’ he enthuses. There’s also a bathroom privacy advantage in play – go smoked to feel less exposed in shared ensuite bathrooms.
10. Dress to impress
Dressing room tables are moving from bedroom to bathroom, bringing a touch of decadence in their wake. The most successful designs, like this one by Kate Marker Interiors , share stone and metallics with the bathroom for a cohesive scheme. Don’t forget a shallow drawer for effortless bathroom organization.
11. Go for couture without compromise
A free-standing bath exudes style and creates a spa-like feel but is it enough? Now we’ve spent so much time at home, comfort is king. ‘The comfort of an inset bath has never been championed in a free-standing version, until Bette created the Oval Couture bath and based it upon the Oval built-in bath,’ says Louise Ashdown of West One Bathrooms . ‘Ergonomically shaped for relaxing, we love the waterproof woven fabric exterior bathroom paneling.’
12. Pick and mix styles
Pattern mash-ups are big news in our living spaces and now the maximalist look is sneaking into our bathrooms, says designer Lisa Gilmore . ‘I’m finding clients much more willing to have fun with bold patterns in their bathrooms, especially with mixing up bathroom wallpaper and tile,’ she says. ‘I like to treat them as little jewel boxes and encourage clients to step outside their comfort zones.’
Forget frameless, barely-there glass, a new breed of showcase screen is stealing the spotlight in the bathroom. Designed to be seen and adored, these focal-point fittings boast bold frames that incorporate sculptural curves.
14. Double up
The main en suite has been gaining gravitas for several years now with many of us sacrificing a guest bedroom to achieve grander proportions for shared or Jack and Jill bathrooms. We’re no longer stopping at ‘his and hers’ basins – now it’s de rigueur to double up on everything. ‘Separate basins are being joined by separate showers and even a towel rail each,’ says Lucy Barlow, founder and creative director, Barlow & Barlow , who designed this space.
15. Create a cocooning effect
It's hardly a surprise, after the year that was 2022, that bathroom trends in 2023 are very much headed up by the trend for home spas.
From scented candles to luxury fittings, there are a host of new wellness bathroom ideas to create your very own retreat.
‘Bathrooms can now be so much more than purely functional spaces,’ explains Yousef Mansuri, head of design at C.P. Hart. ‘More of our customers want to create an oasis of wellbeing at the heart of their home – somewhere that they can enjoy as a private retreat to de-stress and unwind.
'We call this trend “cocooning” because it’s a way for people to wrap themselves in comfort and a quiet sense of luxury.’
Cocooning is a mood that can be created with simple moments that make us pause, such as the ritual of lighting a scented candle or wrapping ourselves in a warm robe. Or it can be fully enjoyed with fittings that offer spa-like experiences, such as massaging showers, hydrotherapy baths, and state-of-the-art steam rooms or saunas.
16. Blend styles in your space

Bathrooms are now less confined to clinical white, polished ceramic and a clean contemporary feel. Instead, people are becoming more confident about going busy and bold in bathroom and powder rooms.
Next year will be all about bringing the outside in with biophilia. Inspired by bathroom pictures like the one above, people will create spa-like sanctuaries with intricate murals and fuse vintage and modernity with stunning installations.
Victorian roll-top baths will remain a crucial component in a 2023 chic bathroom but this will be harmoniously blended with modern, sleek alcoves, bright tiles, and the latest tech.
17. Evoke luxury

Transforming an interior space into a seamless experience to create a more satisfying usage is key over the next twelve months. As homeowners, we tend to use our bathrooms at least twice a day, and studies have shown that the average female spends at least 29 minutes in this space each day, so it’s become a necessity to ensure that bathroom design delivers an at-home spa-like atmosphere so we can linger for longer.
In addition to luxury tiles and spa-like nooks for storage, biophilia – the integration and inclusion of nature as a focal point – isn’t going anywhere. The goal of creating a rich, sensory connotation with nature is still growing in popularity.
A biophilic bathroom design will boast certain patterns that reduce stress and improve creativity while featuring forms and materials that emulate those found in the great outdoors.
There are extensive ranges of luxurious showers and heads allowing the creation of an indulgent showering experience in your own home. The connection between water and well-being has never been easier with waterfall shower heads and walk-in showers to replace bulkier units.
18. Choose fluted finishes
A visual and tactile delight, ribbed surfaces have been given a contemporary twist in the bathroom. Reeded finishes are in the interior limelight. The look is reminiscent of Art Deco glamor – think pillar lights – and now fluting is being reinvented. Delicately ribbed surfaces on vanity units and cabinets provide subtle interest, and shower doors in decorative, vertically grooved glass offer instant privacy while allowing light to shine through.
19. Go green
In cabinetry or plants, this perennial hue can create a life-enhancing link with nature. The huge variety of eye-catching green bathroom tile ideas , furniture, and bathroom ceramics in verdant shades is providing an opportunity for strong new looks.
In soft shades, green evokes a natural sense of calm and harmony, while bolder and darker tones provide individuality and depth. Try walls of saturated color in paint or tiles, or a contemporary vanity unit or countertop basin.
20. Warm up with earth tones
Embrace natural pigments to turn up the heat in your bathroom scheme.
Alongside the mood for comfort comes the move towards warmer tones, including terracotta, rust, caramel, and biscuit. Look out for tiles in earthy colors and tactile finishes that make the perfect antidote to cold and clinical. Try contrasting them with black taps or a black basin to add definition. Untreated timber also works well, this time by echoing the natural, warm mood.
21. Take a minimalist approach
Far removed from the starkness of the past, today's pared-back bathroom layout ideas are equally relaxed, not sterile. Long gone are the days of clutter. Bathrooms are no longer a maximalist mess.
'Architecturally and visually, it is best to keep a bathroom feeling open by not crowding too many things into it. Edit your amenities often, hang your towels on bars or hooks, keep the pattern to a minimum, and generally, make it simple. The room will feel bigger if you use a pedestal or wall-mounted sink rather than a bulky vanity, a clear glass door rather than shower curtain, and reflective surfaces such as glossy ceramic tiles on a large scale,' says Barbara Sallick, co-founder, Waterworks.
22. Invest in luxe lighting
Statement bathroom lighting ideas are having a moment. Outsized or crystal, all-out glamor is the way to go. The latest innovations mean that you don’t have to completely overhaul a scheme in order to make a difference. Don’t be afraid to go big. It takes a little bravery, but you can afford to use larger lights than you might at first think sensible. Big chandeliers, drum pendants and giant floor lamps are all very much in vogue for those who like their lighting to make a statement or are inspired by luxury bathroom design .
23. Paper in botanicals
Embrace blooms and foliage in your smallest room for the biggest, boldest and brightest impact. Even if you don't live in a balmy equatorial climate, that doesn’t have to stop you introducing a fun and tropical feel into your home with creative wallpaper ideas . Embrace lively color, add lush foliage and finish the look with quirky details.
24. Splash out on bathroom tech
Home automation is no longer a sci-fi thing of the future – it’s here, right now, and the good news is it’s useful, easy to use, and just a bit smarter than you might expect. Smart technology promises to put the control at your fingertips and to make your home work better for you, and now it has come to your bathroom. From de-misting mirrors, integrated charging and USB ports, LED temperature displays and automatic hand-wipe sensors, the bathroom is a haven for smart technology. The future is now.
25. Consider book-matched marble
'Marble is definitely enjoying its moment in the limelight. All bathrooms that we see being planned have some form of marble in it,' says Darren. 'It is a beautiful natural material that comes in a wide variety of colorings, markings and veinings. One can never find two pieces the same, which of course greatly adds to its appeal. Although "book-matching" and "vein-matching" are still popular in high-end properties, particularly for those who want something unique,' he continues.
'In general, people are being far more adventurous with marble presently than in the past, incorporating greens, blues, yellows, basically anything a bit out of the ordinary to make their own mark,' says Gary Walters, managing director of Stone Age.
26. Dramatize with an all-black color palette
The moody palettes that are de rigueur with on-trend paint brands are prompting a similarly gothic direction in bathroom colors. Keep the look modern and fresh by opting for textured porcelain tiles. This look is also going to be at the forefront of kitchen design for 2023.
'Advances in technology and product development have also allowed for new colors and finishes in ceramics, enabling homeowners to embrace adventurous design in the bathroom more than ever,' says Faye Froy, marketing manager, Burlington .
'Bathrooms are increasingly becoming places to relax and unwind in,' explains Faye. 'We’re seeing an increase in customers looking for luxurious, deep baths for the ultimate in bathroom relaxation, with dramatic colors a popular choice for a bold statement in interior design.'
27. Hark back with swags and swagger
Whether it’s a glamorous pooling of fabric or a classic louvered shutter, a window dressing plays a crucial role in the success of an interior scheme, and now bathrooms are taking note.
Swags might have been a thing on the 1970s, but as with most trends, they tend to come back around. Drapes may be an unusual choice for the bathroom. Steam and damp can of course be a problem for bathroom fabrics, but as long as your room is well-ventilated room, you should be safe. Well-chosen drapes can add drama and elegance to a bathroom, as well as warmth.
28. Be bold with color
Raring to embrace the return of colored sanitaryware? The current trend for embracing personality and color instead of safe neutral interiors is behind the revival of colored sanitaryware. Swoon stone vanity units are available in 10 different bathroom color ideas including new Seaweed Green, as shown above.
Choosing a sink can arguably be one of the hardest tasks when considering how to design a bathroom because there needs to be a balance of thought to aesthetics, functionality, installation, and also budget.
There’s a plethora of options too. The new year will see people put a clever spin on classic white ceramic with decorative basins featuring ripples, brightly colored matte versions, Miami vice-like pastels, or the addition of gold rims.
Designs will also include more alternatives to the ceramic basin using new materials such as glass, concrete, pressurized surfaces, and mineral cast basin.
If you prefer minimalist, Scandi designs, don’t panic. 2023 will also emphasize our need to be at one with nature. The year of Brave New World color goes hand in hand with warmer-toned surfaces, real-looking wood, and more curved lines as opposed to cold and harsh surfaces normally found in the bathroom.
30. Marvel with marble
A recurring trend in interiors, marble has taken the world by storm over the past few years. Its crisp, clean and natural look with delicate pattern formations provide visual interest to our homes whilst still keeping it minimal, luxurious and tasteful. Cover your walls in marble tiles for a stylish statement or simply use it on the floor for luxury underfoot.
31. Divide with steel-frames

First invented in the 1880s, Crittall metal-framed windows were hugely popular in the Art Deco era. As with many design trends, it has come back around, but this time with a contemporary twist. Use it in bathrooms for windows or to frame shower screens.
32. Shimmer with metallic elements
'This trend is heavily influenced by the 1960s and 1970s when metals, and brass in particular, were used frequently. Metals are now having a revival in all design disciplines,' says Natalia Miyar.
'Chrome and steel are a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms, however these metals can sometimes make a room feel cold and stark. Use less obvious choices and warmer metallic tones such as copper and brass. They create visual impact and change the mood from functional to indulgent.'
33. Embrace the trend for Japandi
(Image credit: Future / Jake Curtis)
Bring in elements of both styles for a balanced effect, with soft, Scandi curves set against clean lines and structured Japanese pieces. Contrasting textures are a great way to introduce a sense of depth to a scheme. Here, a subtle raffia wallcovering throws the smooth curves of the bath into eye-catching relief.
How many years should a bathroom last?
If you're wondering how many years a bathroom should last, it's estimated the average lifespan is around a decade, before it needs sprucing up a little. Although there's no reason why this can't be even longer if it's well looked after. It's only natural for us to want to switch things up once in a while, so the 10-year-mark is a good benchmark to use when thinking about longevity.
How can I modernize my bathroom cheaply?
There are many ways to modernize a bathroom cheaply, like simply giving the room a fresh lick of paint. This could be the walls, ceiling, or floor and why not go for a bold new shade to mix things up and keep it interesting? Alternatively, you could paint the tiles or experiment with some wallpaper, rather than going for a full-on makeover.

Bathroom trends 2023 – 23 styles for fresh new look |

The bathroom trends for 2023 are an interesting mix of decorative and functional approaches. Designers are becoming even more daring with color and print, and being more brave when it comes to finishes. But they're also finding new ways to help you enjoy the space, new ideas to amp up its ability to make you feel rested, calm and clean.
As with all interior design trends, there is a general sense of irreverence, of creating schemes just because you love them and because they make you smile. 'Mix metals and remember finishes don’t have to match!' says Scott Maddux and Jo Le Gleud, the visionary creative duo behind interior design studio Maddux. 'This gives freedom to source fixtures and fittings, such as shower heads and light fittings, from different suppliers and, the differences allow you to notice the intrinsic beauty of them individually. It creates a narrative.'
With that sense of freedom in mind, let's dive into the bathroom trends I think will make the biggest splash next year. Or that I think are worth taking the plunge for. Or that are making me run hot. Or...you get the picture.
Bathroom trends for 2023 - the 15 key looks explained
1. Honeyed tones
Honeyed tones are a key look across all color trends - they're a softer take on the browns that dominated in 2022 but are no less warming. And, like brown, make you feel a little like the room is giving you a hug.
'The bathroom should feel like a place to relax and indulge as well as the more utilitarian aspects,' says the designer Martin Brudnizki, who created this space above. 'There is nothing better than sitting in the tub with a drink next to you looking out of the window over the gardens.’
Expect to see warm ambers on floors, walls and even vanity counters.
2. Dark color palettes
The flip side of honeyed tones is an embrace of darker colors. And they have the same effect - layering them on top of each other creates an elevated space which feels cocooning rather than oppressive.
In this bathroom by Kingston Lafferty Design, the dark blue cabinet pairs with the black walls and large round mirror (a look you'll see in a lot in new mirror trends). The overall vibe is cosy, despite the sharp modernity of the shapes and finishes used.
3. Pattern drenching
Color drenching has been a big trend in interiors, but designers are amping this up in the bathroom. New York-based agency Crosby Studios created this modern bathroom wrapped in a powerful blue and white wallpaper. The result is a space that can't fail to make your heart sing.
This approach works best in high ceilinged rooms, and when the base color of the pattern is light - smaller rooms or darker shades tend to get too heavy.
4. A minimalist take on storage
Interior designer and former Livingetc columnist Linda Boronkay created this bathroom as part of her fit out of Australian hotel Osborn House. And it embodies a general move towards minimalism in interior design which has been taking hold of every room in the house this year, looking set to dominate even more in 2023.
‘This bathroom is marble clad with marble mosaic on the floor,' Linda says. But that doesn't stop it having some minimalist bathroom principles. Like the raised kitchen island, there’s a real airiness to this bathroom thanks in large part to the way the vanities aren’t shuttered off by cupboards. True, this does cut down on the amount of storage space, but that just exhorts us all to be better at not hoarding old shampoos.
5. Symmetry in the layout
(Image credit: Bryan O'Sullivan Studio )
By centering the bathroom layout around a sense of symmetry, a really pleasing feeling of orderliness emerges. This is an approach that is also emerging in living room trends - a new take on the traditional idea that regimented lines make a home.
'We pushed a line of symmetry in this Parisian apartment,' says designer Bryan O'Sullivan who created this marble space above. 'The lines went into the bathroom, through the double doors, with a bath tub at the center. This approach suited the atchteure, and while its quite a trad take on design, we out our twist on it. We made sure shapes were rounded and organic, to stop the formality.' And he included one thing - the white stool - which was off kilter.
6. Sculptural taps
Tap by Tom Dixon for VitrA
While the best bathroom taps have been becoming progressively more elegant, beautiful and exciting over recent years – think elongated spouts, surprising material choices and experimentation with bold finishes – 2023 is the time that tap design really steps into the spotlight. The hottest (and coolest) tap shapes of the moment are turning classic design on its head, challenging and reimagining its most basic features. The revolution, it seems, has started at the handle, with two design superstars introducing a revamped, sculptural version fresh for the new year.
‘I see taps as the jewelry of the bathroom,’ says Erdem Akan, Design Director of VitrA. ‘Just like watches, necklaces and bracelets are a finishing touch to our personal style, taps complete the bathroom atmosphere. Rather than being discreet, their new visual volume is becoming more dominant.’
7. Spa spaces
The quest to turn the home bathroom into a spa isn't particularly new in itself, but after the turmoil of recent years homeowners are doubling down on their desire to do so, making it a big bathroom trend for 2023. Expect to see a rise in grey bathroom ideas to go alongside this.
‘The bathroom is a place for retreat and self-care, now more than ever,' says the designer Patricia Urquiola. 'Over the past year, we spent so much time at home and realized that our bathrooms have become almost like a personal spa, a space in which we can really enjoy moments of privacy and wellbeing in. The design of objects for the bathroom are beginning to follow the re-discovery of this pleasant domestic moment. ’
8. Art in the bathroom
The way people choose to decorate - and personalize - the bathroom is evolving for 2023. Expect to see gallery wall ideas translate into this space, or large, overscale prints hung if there is enough space.
‘The bathroom is becoming more and more like any other living space and turning into a domestic landscape rather than cold white laboratory-style environment,’ says VitrA’s Erdem Akan. ‘Bringing art and/or sculptural designs into these spaces will become more commonplace in the next few years, and taps such as Tom Dixon’s cone-shaped, timeless design will become decorative objects of desire.’
9. Arches
We've seen arched doors appear as an extension trend, and they're now making their way into the bathroom, too.
‘The pandemic made us carefully examine things that make us feel good in the home – such as a relaxing bathroom where we can take care of ourselves, mentally and physically,’ says Monica Born, CEO and Co-Founder of Superfront. ‘What could create a soothing atmosphere better than the classic arch shape used in ancient roman baths? These three-dimensional arches were used to create the large airy rooms needed in the popular roman imperial baths.’
10. Curved showers
And, arches aren't just about openings, but their soft cocooning curves are carrying through into shower room ideas too.
‘I’ve seen showers built into archway-shaped recesses which look really great – it’s a clever way to bring some design clout to even a really small space. I love curved entrances to walk-in showers too, giving you a sense that you are walking into a cocooning space and bringing some visual interest to the bathroom,’ advises Lee Thornley of Bert & May.
11. Semi-precious stone
(Image credit: Stone and Ceramic Warehouse)
Say ‘decorative stone in the bathroom’ and marble will be the immediate reply. For 2023 our minds will be opened and our horizons broadened as we enter an age beyond Carrara. That classic monochrome marble veining will step aside to reveal a whole host of other glorious rock patterns just waiting to adorn our floors, showers, splash basks and walls. These stones are just as beautiful as their predecessors and just as personality filled, with semi-precious patterns that channel the organic movements found in onyx and jade starting out, just as marble did, as hyper realistic, stone-style tiles.
‘There is a demand for color this season as well as customers wanting something a bit different which is where onyx effect tiles come in,’ says Jo Oliver, Director, The Stone & Ceramic Warehouse. ‘They offer beautiful detailing and are available in a wide choice of colors ranging from subtle pale tones to dramatic blue and greens. More unusual marbles, such as our new Coliseum Amazon slab-tiles, are also proving popular with their deep coloring and striking detailed appearance.’
‘For most of us, the bathroom is a space we use to unwind in, or it’s often the first room we see for a prolonged period in the morning as we shower,’ highlights Ca’ Pietra’s Grazzie Wilson. ‘The natural colors and materials found in stone works so well in the bathroom because they’re innately calming. With natural colors and materials everything is in harmony and nothing is competing, so they are the perfect backdrop for relaxation’.
12. Green and pink
A classic color combo in the home for years, green and pink is moving over the bathroom, specfically when it comes to bathroom tile ideas. Both shades are soothing in their own way, and combined they have the dreamy effect of cool ice cream on a warm day. It makes sense that that mood of light, joyful relaxation is one that is being carried over to the bathroom..'
13. Finger tiles
Slim profiles which are neatly laid next to each other, finger tiles – also known as Kitkat tiles – are the 2023 update on mosaic and penny tiling. A seemingly minimal take on bathroom tile trends, once repeatedly put on a surface alongside each other, they suddenly become more than an extremely thin slice of tile, forming a perfectly imperfect pattern which merges into itself the further away you stand. Grout plays a key role here, with nuances in its thickness around the tiles creating an organic-feeling pattern which highlights the hand of the tile layer and makes each application unique.
‘Stick-like mosaic tiles, finger tiles or Kitkat tiles as many people refer to them as, have really boomed this year, and their popularity is set to continue well into 2023 and beyond,’ says Grazzie Wilson, Creative Lead at Ca’ Pietra. ‘While Kitkat tiles are striking, the subtle colorways that they are typically available in allows for them to become a feature without being overpowering. They add depth and texture to a bathroom and they don’t compete with other patterns or prints, so they’re at once a statement, and calming on the eye.’
14. Jungle motifs
Jungle motifs have flourished in the home of late, and we’re not quite ready to live without them. Over in wallpaper trends, we're seeing tigers, but for 2023, in bathrooms, it's jungle leaves specifically. If we’re unaccustomed and unable to travel the globe freely, we’ll turn our bathroom – the place where we have a few moments of peace and private time – into a leaf-filled habitat, a space that transports us into the rainforest with the simple swish and flick of wallpaper paste and a little imagination. Bathroom wallpaper has been coming into its own over the last few years, and is now showing off its water repelling credentials in all encompassing, wall murals offering us wild, panoramic views as we take a long soak in the bath and turning our shower into a tropical rainstorm.
‘Patterns from nature bring evoke memories and feelings, and drawing on thoughts of distant atmospheres different from our own habitat adds excitement and wonder to the day,’ says Christian Benini of Wall&Deco. ‘Also these plants have a strong connection with water, which makes the bathroom their natural environment.’
15. Raw and natural textures
Natural, unrefined finishes offer respite from the hard, cold surfaces commonly found in the bathroom – not to mention the hard, cold reality of life beyond the bathroom door.
Wood is an obvious go-to. Select darker timbers with an element of history evidenced in a vintage stain or rough-sawn surface. Faking it with wood-look porcelain tiles can be equally as effective, provided there’s a textural finish to recreate the tactility factor.
16. Fluted finishes
Texture always comes into the trends of living rooms and bedrooms, but this want for unusual 3D finishes and tactile materials is coming into bathrooms too. And the bathroom trend for fluted surfaces is a lovely subtle way to bring in those unexpected textures. Opt for a fluted vanity cabinet, fluted glass shower panels, or, as can be seen in this grey bathroom, go for a fluted marble backsplash or create a similar look with fluted tiles.
17. Terracotta tiles
Terracotta is a color we're seeing in kitchen trends, too. For years there's been a slow but steady shift away from the sleek, clean, verging on clinical approach that was used in so much of bathroom design and towards choosing a warmer, cozier, more cocooning scheme. It's no surprise then that terracotta tiles in rusty orange hues are on-trend for 2023, switching classic white for something toastier and traditionally reserved for living rooms or bedrooms.
Give these firery shades a contemporary feel by pairing them with minimalist hardware or up the rustic farmhouse feel with wooden accents and traditional fixtures.
18. Soft textiles
Textiles often aren't a focus in bathrooms, when it comes to window treatments, simple roller blinds or shutters are usually the go-to. However, bathroom curtains and blousy fabric blinds and a big trend this year as again there's that shift to make bathrooms, softer more living room-like spaces.
Of course, practicalities still have to come first in bathrooms so rather than long heavy curtains that pool around the floor, opt for something soft, floaty, and sheer that still adds texture but doesn't feel too heavy or dramatic for a bathroom.
And again, usually, bathroom lighting ideas are a mostly practical part of bathroom design which spotlights being the most popular choice. But for 2023 it's all about making more of a focal point of lighting. Why shouldn't a chandelier hang in a bathroom? Just be sure to think safety first, a pendant light should hang around 6 feet above the floor, and don't position a low hanging light close to a water source unless it has ingress protection or IP-rated fittings that are sufficient enough.
20. Top-to-toe Terrazzo
(Image credit: Bathroom design by Carter Design)
Terrazzo flooring has been back for a while, and for bathrooms it's now going bigger than ever. Quite literally. While in the past for years, subtle designs with smaller chips of stone have been popular, we are seeing a rise in bolder patterns with bigger chips and brighter colors.
Dzek's trailblazing terrazzo arguably led the way in the material's current revival. While others may opt for smaller chips of stone, Dzek didn't hold back and the bold pattern of of its Marmoreal tiles packs a punch in this L.A. bathroom. Terrazzo tiles are an easy way to get this distinctive look without the hassle of the original application (a cement-type material poured on-site with chips mixed in).
21. Graphic Lines
Serene yet sexy, dusky pinks and 3D monochrome features transform this chic Parisian bathroom into a sanctuary. Designed by New York-based Crosby Studios, it has strong geometric shapes that ooze a post-modern vibe. Versatile black-and-white bathroom products can be mixed with almost any other colours, while painting the back wall a lighter shade creates a sense of depth and perspective.
22. Japandi style
An amalgamation of Japanese minimalism and Scandi cool, Japandi has been around for a while but has soared in popularity this year, likely due to its calming zen vibes.
‘If you are seeking a serene space, then Japanese-inspired materials are perfect,' says Ca’ Pietra’s Grazzie Wilson. ‘Keep the bathroom tonal by opting for a lighter, warmer and neutral color palette to create an effortlessly chic and sophisticated space.’
23. Sherbet shades
This past year has seen a surge in pink bathroom ideas. Sherbet hues – think pastels with a zingy twist – evoke an era of glitz and hedonism.
‘Dial back to Miami in the Thirties and Palm Springs in the Fifties – big ice cream-coloured convertibles, glamorous abodes and pool parties,’ says Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms. 'The true beauty of sherbet shades is that they work exceptionally well with the still- trending metallic brassware we’ve all fallen hard for – try mixing strawberry pink with matt gold taps. The effect is stunning and will lift your bathroom to new heights.'
What bathroom colors are in for 2023
Terracotta and peach-tinged white are the biggest colors in bathrooms for 2023. Both having warming qualities to them, the terracotta being quite powerfully so, and the peachy white becoming a more subtle version. As far as color pairings go, green and pink together are the key palette for 2023, creating a dreamy, tranquil backdrop to relax in.

Design of a bathroom with a shower: 106 photos of interiors
In a city apartment, a small area is most often allocated for a bathroom - sometimes only 2-3 squares. For such footage, you need to choose compact solutions to accommodate everything you need. In this article, we will tell you how to design a bathroom with a shower cabin, with photo examples and layout options.

Pros
- Compactness is the main advantage of bathrooms with a shower cabin, photos of which you will find below. For most typical bathrooms, standard models are also suitable, and for especially small rooms there are special compact cabins.
- Convenience - no need to climb over high sides to wash.
- Save time - you start the water treatment the second you step into the shower. You don't have to wait for water to come in.
- Saving water - this point may seem controversial, because if you spend more than half an hour in the shower, the water consumption is equal to or more than washing in the bathroom. However, most often they take 10-20 minutes to wash in the shower, and less water is spent during this time. In addition, many manufacturers offer special shower systems with saving technologies.
- Safety - you will not fall asleep in the shower, like in a warm bath, and you will not slip, climbing over the side.

Cons
- Boxing requires more maintenance. To prevent limescale from forming on the transparent walls, they must be regularly washed and wiped dry.
- Do not lie in hot water with fragrant foam. For many, the main advantage of the bath is the opportunity to relax and arrange a home spa. But this can also be done in the shower, for example, by installing a watering can with a tropical or massage shower.
- Without good ventilation, the shower area will be constantly damp and mold or mildew may grow.

Box
The closed system, consisting of a deep tray, walls and roof, is gradually becoming a thing of the past. Such cabins look bulky and most often outdated. In addition, it is inconvenient for the elderly and people with limited mobility to use them because of the height of the pallet - in fact, climbing there is no easier than getting into the bath.
Modern stylish models with thin walls and no cheap plastic can be found, but they are unreasonably expensive. The only significant plus of such structures is that inside you can install not a simple shower head, but organize a real spa complex and even a home Turkish bath, add a radio, several shelves or a mirror.

Corner
A lighter version of the classic cabin, perfect for small bathrooms.

The structure is installed in a corner, due to which two walls are involved. This significantly reduces the cost of the cab. There is usually no roof either, sometimes they refuse the pallet. The shape of the corner cabins are:
- Semi-circular.
- Square.
- Multifaceted.
For the walls in the shower area, you can choose the same tiles as in the entire bathroom, or make them accent by choosing a tile of a different color or with a pattern.

Homemade
The homemade box looks best visually, and the cost is no more (and sometimes less) than a standard box.
Instagram @hollstudio
To make a stylish custom size shower you will need:
- Wall Tiles.
- Doors.
- Tray.
The dimensions of the shower area and the height of the tray are up to you. If the bathroom is small, the design is often made along the entire length of the wall. Either a wall is installed, the result is a shower on one side and a sink or storage system on the other.
The hardest part is the pallet. The base is usually made of concrete or brick. The height can be any, the main thing is that communications can be hidden inside. Sometimes the lift is completely abandoned, replacing it with a minimalist design with a drain ladder. It looks very nice, but in this case it is important to ensure a sufficient slope of the floor in the area with a shower.

Combined bathroom
In bathrooms where a bathroom and a toilet are combined, furniture is usually placed on two or three walls, depending on the size of the room.
Instagram @artem.manshyn
In this example, we see the layout of a small bathroom with a makeshift shower area. Nothing was placed on the end wall opposite the entrance due to lack of space, all the plumbing was placed on opposite sides. So, to the left of the door there is a shower and a compact hanging toilet with an installation. On the right is a sink and storage systems (cabinet, cabinet).
Separate bathroom
If the apartment has a separate toilet room, the layout is simplified - you only need to place a shower, sink and storage systems.
Instagram @efimova_designer_online
Here on 3.2 sq. m placed a shower in the corner, a spacious wardrobe for storing towels, cosmetics and household items, as well as a sink with a mirror and shelves. As in the first example, plumbing and furniture are placed along the walls - this is the best option for a small room of any shape.
Custom
Sometimes a builder offers a custom shaped bathroom with a walk-in shower, as shown in the photo below.
Instagram @projection_design
In this case, large items (shower, closet, toilet with installation) are placed on the walls at a right angle. Small details (for example, a trash can, a laundry basket or a brush) can be placed where there is space left.
With washing machine
Most often, the bathroom is the only place in the apartment where you can put a washing machine.
Instagram @efimova_designer_online
Here is an example of such a layout. The machine was placed near the sink, under the countertop, followed by a toilet bowl with an installation. A corner cabin and a storage cabinet were placed against the opposite wall. If instead of a shower there was a bath, there would be no room left for the locker and it would have to be moved to the place of the washing machine.
The most popular bathroom finishing materials are tiles and porcelain stoneware.
Instagram @interiors_dd
The easiest way to use them is for all surfaces, but you can experiment and combine tiles with other finishes. It could be:
- Moisture resistant paint.
- Decorative plaster - suitable if you are decorating a bathroom in a loft, scandi or minimalist style.
- Washable wallpaper - non-woven, liquid, fiberglass.
- Decorative panels.
But these materials (especially wallpaper) should not be used in the wash area - it is too wet, there is a lot of steam and regular wet cleaning is required. Use tiles to finish the cabin.

If the room is small, don't use too colorful and large prints. A safe option that will visually enlarge the space is a simple light tile. Any pastel colors, white, shades of gray and beige will do. So that the interior does not seem too boring, experiment with the shape of the tiles and laying methods. Contrasting grout looks spectacular on a light background.
Below is a photo of the design of a bathroom with a shower, where the tiles look concise, stylish and interesting at the same time.

Despite the tiny area, the designers were not afraid to use dark colors in the design. The result is a spectacular contrast of black and white, and gilded trim details and fittings dilute it. The texture of marble was combined with dark terrazzo on the floor and white stone-like tiles.

Q3 m
This project is an example of how you can organize a bright and cozy space in just 3 squares where you want to spend time.
The layout turned out to be standard: a homemade box along one of the walls, opposite the entrance there is a light hanging sink with a large mirror. On the right, they installed a built-in wardrobe and a toilet in the corner - it is hidden in the resulting niche.
Finishing sets the atmosphere of the room. Designers used a lot of white with a hint of marble texture, as well as wood-like tiles. Together with diverse lighting and local soft lighting, this gives the very feeling of comfort. And black details dilute the light palette and “collect” the interior.

Bathroom, bathroom
6 basic bathroom solutions that will make it a cozy room (and not just a bathroom)
4 sq. m
4 square meters is enough to install all the necessary plumbing, organize storage and find a place for a washing machine. In this small room placed:
- Corner cabin with shelves in a niche.
- Wall hung toilet with installation and built-in wardrobe.
- Washbasin with mirror.
- Case for storing household items and a compartment for a washing machine.
The interior is decorated in a modern style. Five colors were used in the palette at once (blue, white, black, gray, brown), but they are all calm and pleasing to the eye, so there is no feeling of congestion. There are also enough textures: wood imitation, terrazzo, marble. They are friends with each other due to the combination of colors.

Bathroom design 2023: 108 photos of fashion trends
Special requirements are always placed on the interior of a bathroom: it must be practical, comfortable, safe and preferably stylish at the same time. If you are planning to renovate or build a new home, this article is for you. In it, we have collected the brightest trends for the bathroom-2023. Read, look at photo collections and take note of ideas.
Top 10 bathroom design trends in 2023 9Spa
At one time, the pandemic clearly showed that full-fledged self-care and relaxation sessions can be arranged in your own bathroom. Now, without waiting for new lockdowns, design is aiming to make the bathroom not just a place for hygiene procedures, but also a full-fledged home spa.
Most importantly, this trend is not only for owners of spacious bathrooms - you can add elements of wellness to a small bathroom in a typical apartment. For this:
- Choose calm colors and comfortable materials: white, gray, beige, brown and green in combination with the texture of wood, stone, frosted glass will create a cozy atmosphere.
- Make everything in the room feel tactile. Lay a rug, use soft towels, dressing gowns made from natural fabrics.
- Add a couple of unpretentious living plants to the interior, arrange scented candles with your favorite scents, buy an aroma lamp, use bath salts.
- If there is no place for a bath in the bathroom, install a massage shower with several modes - the relaxing effect of it will be no less.
- Consider lighting. In addition to the main lamp, there should be soft local illumination. For example, you can run an LED strip with warm light around the perimeter of the mirror or arrange shelves in a niche in the same way.
- Get rid of the mess. Hide cleaning products in the utility closet, organize neat storage of trifles, towels and dirty linen - nothing should distract from the rest.

This is no longer just an area for hygiene procedures and a few square meters that are used exclusively for utilitarian purposes, but a full-fledged room that can be no less stylish and comfortable than a living room or bedroom. The easiest way to add softness and warmth to any space is to introduce natural textures into the interior, primarily wood in its various manifestations.
But, as you know, wet areas are not the best place for natural solid wood, since this material does not like moisture and temperature changes. Therefore, various alternatives can be used. For example:
- Furniture with MDF-look fronts with a high-quality imitation of a wooden surface.
- Wood effect tiles and porcelain stoneware.
- Quartz vinyl on the floor.
- Decorative panels.
To make the effect not only visual, act on other senses: put a warm floor under the tiles, place an aroma diffuser with the smell of the forest, etc.

The color scheme is always a matter of personal preference: someone likes calm beige, and someone likes bright blue.
Design: Vera Koroleva
But it is not without reason that large analytical companies choose the colors of the year - trends can also be traced in this area. So, the design of a fashionable bathroom in 2023 will be based on noble, eye-pleasing natural tones. They can be divided into several groups:
- Shades of soil, sand, earth. These are all variations of beige, gray, brown: from light sand to brown with a red undertone.
- Other natural elements are water, fire, air. If you like bright colors, then when choosing a shade, refer to deep natural tones: green, red-orange, blue, terracotta.
- Minerals and gems. Blue, purple, emerald, deep red - if you want to add dark tones to the palette, use gemstone shades. They will make the interior visually more expensive, emphasize metal, copper or brass, and will not tire your eyes.
So that natural shades do not look too flat, designers complement them with pronounced textures. These can be both original materials (for example, a stone sink or marble slabs on the wall), as well as their high-quality imitations.

Large-format ceramics include fragments over 30 cm wide, and some can reach up to a meter (for example, porcelain stoneware slabs). Rectangular tiles are usually produced in 30x60 cm or 45x90 cm formats, there are also narrower and elongated models that imitate, for example, wooden boards.
This cladding has two important advantages:
- The large format looks minimalist, monolithic and visually enlarges the space.
- Since there are fewer grout lines, these ceramics are much easier to care for.
Don't be afraid of large details: choose porcelain stoneware or tiles in soothing shades, smooth or with imitation of natural textures, so that the wall decoration looks whole and does not disturb the proportions of a small room.

Furnishings should be not only stylish, but also as comfortable as possible. To make the design look concise, stylish and holistic, as in the photo below, the space is equipped with elegant-looking, but multifunctional appliances. Behind smooth lines and a beautiful surface hide complex smart systems, voice assistants and dozens of technologies invisible in everyday life.
Things to look out for:
- Touchless sensor faucets.
- Water saving toilets.
- Water heaters and shower systems with remote control.
- Shower faucets with temperature control and scald protection.
- Shower with individual settings: you can set your favorite parameters, order of modes, operating time, etc.
- Smart light control, etc.
Technological models are more expensive than standard ones, but this is an investment in your own comfort. It will pay off as soon as you feel how much the experience of using the bathroom will change.

But now more and more obvious is the tendency to emphasize the decorative component of the mirror. It becomes the central element, the main focus of the entire space. This can be helped by an unusual shape, a massive or bright frame, LED backlighting, which at the same time will provide additional local lighting, which is also very important for this area. Curly sconces or any other decor will also help to attract attention.
Product design can be very different:
- Classic round shape.
- Square or rectangle with rounded edges.
- "Endless" mirror without any frame.
- Sun model with ray frame (this is a characteristic Art Deco element, but can be used in any other style).
- With colored or stained glass inserts.

Since the trend is minimalism, there should not be many decorations, each one is concise and self-sufficient. These can be:
- A couple of posters or paintings by contemporary artists.
- Scented candles and diffusers.
- Textiles made from natural fabrics.
- Bathroom sets in the same style: brush cup, soap dish, shampoo dispensers, shower gel, etc.
- Interior perfume in a beautiful bottle.
- Wicker baskets or interesting organizers for small things.
When choosing decor, remember that the bathroom is a wet area. If you want to hang a picture, it must be protected from moisture. It is better not to put scented candles where it is always hot and there is a lot of steam. In general, when choosing accessories, pay attention to the material from which they are made so that they do not deteriorate ahead of time.

To save space in standard bathrooms, a built-in bowl is usually installed, if not abandoned at all in favor of a shower cabin.

But more and more spectacular freestanding bathtubs are appearing in design projects - and in 2023 there will only be more of them in bathroom design. Manufacturers are also following the trend, releasing models in different colors, sizes and shapes.
This type of sanitary ware has several features to consider. Firstly, it is not suitable for very small rooms - it is still better to place a shower or a compact built-in model on several squares. Secondly, the supply of communications will be non-standard, and this must be planned at the repair stage. Finally, when choosing a place for a separate bowl, remember that it should be convenient to approach it: both to climb in or out, and during cleaning.
The design of such bowls today is truly diverse. These can be oval, rectangular, non-standard models. Whether with a clean, minimalist design or with a retro feel: curved legs, colored body and accent taps. Choose a product for the overall concept of the interior and complement it with appropriate finishes, furniture, and decor.

Previously, ceramic was the only option because it was the only one suitable for hot, humid environments. Now there are many stylish alternatives:
- Washable wallpaper.
- Moisture resistant paint.
- Plaster.
- Decorative panels.
Porcelain stoneware or tiles don't have to be discarded - it's still the best finish for wet areas. But you can and should dilute them with other material - you get a stylish and interesting interior. If you're adding wallpaper to the tiles, it's best to hang them in a dry part of the room, such as behind a mirror, at the entrance, or in a storage area. Even a moisture-resistant washable cover in the shower will quickly become unusable.
