OBI experts talk about the wide use of PVC panels in the bathroom
Modern bathroom decoration involves the use of different materials. Their choice is not limited to ceramic tiles: when designing a bathroom, preference is often given to PVC panels . This is a practical and original finishing option, moreover, it is economical and easy to install.
1. Pros and cons of PVC | 2. How to choose PVC bathroom panels? |
3. Dimensions | 4. Additional protection |
5. Color and Figure | 6. Additional recommendations |
7. Advantages of Ob hypermarkets |
1. Polivitvilchlorids
Plastic panels are two-layer: they consist of two sheets of polyvinyl chloride. Between them are stiffeners that give strength and contribute to the preservation of shape. Also on sale are thin, flexible products (3D panels), most often used as a kitchen apron.
Material advantages:
- • low weight, which allows plasterboard walls and partitions to be sheathed;
- • resistant to moisture and detergents, which greatly facilitates cleaning;
- • low price;
- • Aesthetics due to a wide choice of colors and textures. In addition, communications can be hidden behind the panels: wires, pipes, etc.;
- • smooth, hygienic surface that is resistant to mold and mildew.
However, such panels are not without drawbacks:
- • dents and scratches may remain on the surface under significant mechanical impact;
- • some materials will melt when burned, producing acrid smoke, which increases the risk of fire;
- • reduce the interior space of the room;
- • there is a risk of buying a low-quality fake, which will be short-lived, fragile and can harm your health.
2. How to choose PVC bathroom panels?
Today there is a wide range of PVC panels on the market that can be used for interior and exterior decoration. Information about the most optimal operating conditions is indicated on the packaging. It is better to opt for options with a wider temperature range, from -40 to 110 ° C. When buying, pay attention to the marking: it should indicate the fire safety class and information about the presence of a certificate of conformity.
3. Dimensions
If the room has a non-standard height or layout, special attention must be paid to these parameters. The length of the panels is usually 2.5–3 m. If you only need to sheathe the upper or lower part of the wall with them, you can choose the elements so that when cutting there is a minimum of waste. The thickness of products is usually 5-12 mm, and the width ranges from 100 to 500 mm. For a bathroom, it is better to choose the widest: the fewer joints, the less likely it is that moisture will accumulate in the seams. But if the room is small, has a non-standard shape, in order to save money, it is more expedient to stop at narrow lanes.
Calculating their number is simple: the length of each wall must be divided by the width of the selected panel. The element to be cut is best taken into account as a whole, without planning to use the remaining part elsewhere.
4. Additional protection
Some panels have a protective film on the front side. It preserves the integrity of the base and pattern during transportation and installation. After completion of the work, the film can be removed without problems. Its presence prevents scratches and damage.
Given the level of humidity, it is worth choosing panels with a lamination for the bathroom. The applied special coating allows not only to create very successful imitations of wood, stone, tiles, decorative plaster and other materials, but also increases the mechanical strength, heat resistance, elasticity and other performance qualities of PVC panels.

5. Color and pattern
The choice of color depends on the interior design project. But there are a few general rules that help design the bathroom most successfully. One of the common problems is the small size of the bathroom, which, after installing plumbing and furniture, can look very cramped. To visually increase the space, it is better to stop at light shades : blue, light green, beige. Pastel colors should also be guided by when choosing PVC panels with imitation of natural textures (stone, wood).
When choosing products with pattern , it is advisable to avoid large details and panels: small patterns will visually push the walls apart and raise the ceiling. If the bathroom is spacious enough, the number of design options increases significantly.
Modern technologies for the production of PVC panels make it possible to use gold or silver paint for decoration. It is applied in a special way that provides reliable adhesion to the base, so this finish remains unchanged for several years.
PVC panels with a mirror surface can also be found on the market. They are more expensive than other types, but will cost less than decorating the bathroom with mirrors or mirror tiles.
Helpful Hint: When choosing panels with a pattern or pattern, make sure that all the details of the image match at the junctions.
6. Additional recommendations
1. To increase the service life, it is desirable to choose panels with several stiffeners. The more such elements, the stronger the structure.
2. When joining two panels, there must be no gaps at the joint, otherwise water will accumulate there, which will lead to fungus and mold.
3. For the bathroom, you need to choose PVC panels with increased resistance to moisture. Appropriate marking is usually applied to the packaging. It is advisable to seal the joints during installation with silicone sealant.
4. Thinner products can be purchased for the ceiling, since this part of the room does not bear any load. But if you plan to install recessed fixtures, then enough space should be provided between the main ceiling and the decorative ceiling.
5. There are two types of installation of PVC panels:
- • the first - with the most even walls, the elements can be fixed with mounting glue (liquid nails). This will allow you to complete repairs in a short time and at lower financial costs;
- • second - if the walls are uneven, a crate made of metal profiles or wooden bars (battens) is used. Its average size is 50 * 50 cm, depending on the quality of the panels. With this method, you will also need kleimers (elements for fastening the panel to the crate), finishing nails (if the crate is made of metal - small self-tapping screws).
Important: All accessories, fittings, furniture must be attached only to bars or profiles. Therefore, the marking of the crate should be done in advance.
6. When choosing PVC panels, you must immediately take care of skirting boards, mounting profiles of various types - starting, docking, external, internal, F-profiles. They serve for decorative design of cuts, corner joints, joints with other materials, door and window openings, etc. The start profile can also be installed on the floor in the absence of a plinth.
Installation of panels starts from the door and is carried out along the perimeter of the room, the corners are set in the course of work. After the installation is completed, a PVC ceiling plinth is mounted, designed specifically for PVC panels.

Finishing the walls of the bathroom with plastic panels. How to fix PVC panels to the wall?
As you already know from the previous publication, the walls can be given a beautiful appearance not only with ceramic tiles, but also with plastic panels, which can freshen up the appearance of the bathroom and the installation of which does not require special material and physical costs.
Let's take a closer look at how the PVC panels are fixed to the wall? How to finish the walls in the bathroom with plastic panels on the crate and on liquid nails?
What are the advantages of plastic bathroom panels?
Due to the fact that plastic panels can be used for finishing in rooms with high humidity and temperature, many people today choose them as an inexpensive alternative to tiling walls.
Panels are highly resistant to micro-organisms, do not support the spread of fungus, do not absorb moisture, are resistant to fading, and have sufficient chemical and physical resistance.
As you can see, this is an excellent material that has all the necessary properties for finishing bathrooms and bathrooms, in addition, it is available in a wide variety of colors and allows you to choose colors for any most demanding taste. The photo below shows the bathroom interior with paneling (click on the photo to enlarge):
You can find plastic panels on sale with dimensions of 250-400 mm in width and up to 3 m in length.
Plastic panels can be used not only to repair walls, but also to install a screen under the bath, as well as to cover exposed pipes.
Installation of plastic panels can be done in two main ways - with the help of lathing and with the help of "liquid nails"
Each method has its pros and cons.
Tools for installing plastic panels in the bathroom
In order to perform all the necessary operations for fixing PVC panels on the walls of the bathroom, you will need the following tools and materials:
You should also stock up on the necessary amount of solutions that prevent the appearance of mold and fungus for treating walls and battens.
Installation of PVC panels on the batten
Fixing the panels to the batten is generally preferable to direct fixing directly to the wall with “liquid nails”. The batten allows air to move between the wall and the panel, reducing the chance of mold and mildew.
Also, the advantage of installing panels with crates is the ability to hide the elements of piping and electrical wires.
It is advisable to use a special plastic profile as a purlin. If this is not possible, then you can use even wooden slats 15-20 mm thick and 30 mm wide.
However, when purlins are made of wood, be aware that wood battens can swell when exposed to moisture, lime can swell, and damp wood can cause fungus or mold in the bathroom.
The spacing of the lathing along the bathroom wall should be 40-50 cm, the spacing of the lathing along the ceiling should be 30-40 cm. After that, starting from the most prominent corner, the installation of panels begins. To do this, a starting angle is set in the corner, to which the first panel is mounted.
The panels are interconnected by shelves - a narrow shelf to a wide one and are fastened with self-tapping screws or small nails. With a wooden crate, you can use a construction stapler.
The installation of panels in the opposite corner is completed by installing a special part - the finishing corner.
Installing PVC panels on liquid nails
Wall cladding using plastic panels can be applied directly to the wall using liquid nails or similar.
This method is simpler than fastening the panels to the crate, but has significant disadvantages. With this method of fastening, there is no ventilation between the wall and the panel, which, at elevated temperatures and humidity, can cause mold and mildew, and when attaching panels to glue, perfectly smooth walls are needed, which will require work to level them.
Also, panels glued directly to the wall do not hide electrical wires or pipes running along the wall.
Mounting of panels with glue is carried out as follows.
Walls are thoroughly cleaned of debris, cobwebs and dust. After that, the walls are treated with compounds that improve the adhesion of the adhesive to their surface. "Liquid nails" are applied evenly to the plastic panel, which is then pressed against the wall.
The installation procedure for the panels is the same as for mounting on the crate - each subsequent panel is joined by a narrow shelf to the wide shelf of the previous panel.
When framing windows and doorways, special finishing elements are used to beautifully and securely fix the panels in these places.
Mistakes when paneling bathroom walls
When installing plastic panels, as a rule, the same mistakes are made. Therefore, try to be careful and not repeat them.
The main errors include:
- excessively strong bending of the panels, which gives them an unattractive appearance;
- premature removal of the protective film from the surface of the panels;
- use for cutting a hacksaw with a tooth pitch of more than 1 mm, which leads to the appearance of noticeable notches and burrs;
- using organic solvents to clean the panels, which may cause stains.
