Light & Mirror - Design Bathroom mirrors

With the new mirror program, Duravit shows versatile design solutions which add value to the bathroom in private and commercial buildings while also providing optimal and beautiful illumination. Choose from two different variants to realize your individual ideas always aiming for the highest requirements in terms of design, functionality and comfort. They can be perfectly combined with all bathroom series thanks to its reduced and formal language.

Ambient Light

The mirror with ambient light provides agreeable indirect light form all four sides. The wallwash effect gives the room an atmospheric illumination. Since no direct light falls on the person standing in front of the mirror, this variant requires additional illumination (e.g. downlights). The optional mirror heating ensures that the surface does not mist over.

Top-edge light field

In this version, a light field on the top edge of the mirror provides direct illumination.

Dual light fields at the sides

Here, two light fields at the left and right mirror edges provide direct illumination. A specifically developed deflector profile provides homogeneous light with high light yield. Optionally available with de-fogging system and LED light for washbasin area.

Standard

With the "Standard" variant, all models are operated by an external wall switch.

Better

With the "Better" variant, the lighting is operated via sensor: Turn the light on and off with a simple hand motion.

Premium

All mirror models have downlights to illuminate the washbasin. The light is switched on an off via sensor with a simple hand motion. The integrated heating element prevents mirrors to become foggy.

The mirror cabinets can be combined with all Duravit series due to their formal and timelessly aesthetic design language. They are available in various widths and in three design variants – also as built-in versions. All variants have a LED light band with a pleasant light color of and more than 30,000 hours of operation.

Better

The mirror cabinet contains a power socket unit. Black back panel. The inside finished in diamond black. Also available as a built-in version with installation set.

Best

The mirror cabinet contains an outlet. The back panel is mirrored. With additional LED washbasin lighting.

How to install and connect a mirror with a backlight

Content:

mirrors with backlight - backlight functional and modern accessory in the bathroom. It is much more convenient to make high-quality makeup, tidy up a beard or mustache with a bright backlight coming from under the mirror sheet. And thanks to the huge variety of shapes and sizes, LED-mirrors will harmoniously fit into the interior design in any style.

Whether you purchased a full length mirror or a wall hung over the sink, this article will help you install and connect either option. Follow the steps below and you'll be sure to handle the installation yourself. The owner, who likes to make something around the house with his own hands, is quite capable of this task. It is best to do this work with two people - this way you will not only get it faster, but it will also be much more convenient.

Types of lighting on mirrors

This article will discuss exactly how to connect mirrors with built-in LED lighting. They can be presented in two versions:

1. Illumination around the perimeter

Depending on the model, for such products, the backlight is an LED strip located along the perimeter or sides of the product. The backlight can be internal - located under the mirror canvas, or external - when the light comes from the sides, as if from under the mirror.

2. Decorative lighting

Decorative lighting consists of figured compositions on a mirror canvas through which light penetrates. This option does not emit a very powerful light, so it is most often chosen as a decoration, as a design element of the interior.

In the photo: illuminated mirrors Anabella and Vesna

Ways to turn on and off the backlight of mirrors

1. Touch activation

• At the end of the mirror can be located contactless sensor. The illumination of mirrors from this group can be turned on or off by raising your hand. When choosing this method of switching on, please note that access to the sensor must remain free. Therefore, position the mirror so as not to block the passage to the sensor with the front door or cabinet doors.

• The contact touch sensor can be placed on the front of the mirror. It looks like a glowing circle or square and is triggered when you touch it with your finger.

2. Plug to socket

Bathroom mirrors with a plug in the socket - perhaps the easiest way to connect. In this case, during installation, you do not have to deal with electrical wiring, and turning on the illuminated mirror will be no more difficult than a hair dryer or any other electrical appliance.

3. Wall switch

This method is considered one of the simplest, with this connection method, the electronic clock on the mirror will also work when the power is turned off.

4. Remote control

Controlling the backlight with a remote control is convenient in cases where the mirror is placed in a hard-to-reach place and it will not be possible to reach the button or sensor. Some models also provide the ability to change the brightness of the backlight thanks to a special controller - a dimmer.

What you need

To mount and connect the illuminated mirror, you will need the following set of tools:0003

3. Scurrypoint

4. Hook “Crimery”

5. Construction level

6. Roulette

7. Pencil

8. Read the terminals of WAGO

  • Before installing

there are several rules that you are that you must be taken into account to fix the mirror securely and safely. Here are the most important ones:

    1. If you have purchased a large illuminated mirror, make sure to purchase quality holders. Each dowel must hold weight of at least 20 kg.

    .

    3. Place the power supply unit in such a way as to provide sufficient cooling and protect it from moisture as much as possible. The best option is to place the power supply outside the bathroom. The housing of the power supply unit must be earthed by connecting it to the corresponding mains wire.

Step-by-step instructions for installing and fixing the illuminated mirror

    1. Unpack the mirror

Place the mirror on a flat surface. Use a utility knife to make cuts around the perimeter in the shipping tape. Open the package and remove the protective foam from all sides of the mirror. If necessary, remove the protective film from the mirror sheet.
Check contents. Together with the mirror in the box, there should be a product passport/warranty card and installation instructions.

    2. Preparing for installation

At this stage, it is very important to correctly determine the height at which the mirror will be located. The recommended mounting height of the mirror is at a distance of 30 cm from the floor. In this case, the top point of the mirror should be located 10-20 cm above the height of the tallest member of the family. However, this figure may vary depending on the height of family members, for your convenience.

Measure the width of the mirror with a tape measure and mark the notches on the wall, between which the product will be located. Please note that at least 2-3 cm should remain from the mirror level to the suspension level. Take a building level and a pencil and transfer the drilling points to the wall.

Using a spirit level, draw a horizontal line over the top edge of the mirror - with it you will hang the mirror perfectly even.

    3. Drill holes

Drill holes according to the marking. Please note that this is a rather dusty job, so it is best to cover all items in the room with a protective film in advance.

The diameter and depth of the hole will depend on the dowel used. For a plasterboard wall, we recommend using a butterfly dowel, for other cases - an 8 * 60 dowel for concrete. For ceramic tiles, we recommend starting with a ceramic drill and then also taking a concrete drill.

Designer's tip: mirror fixings are best done at the joints between ceramic tiles.

Insert crutches with dowels into the holes, screw in the brackets. Mount the mirror on the hooks.

Instructions for mounting the mirror on suspension brackets:

Instructions for mounting the mirror on through dowels:

    4. Lighting connection

EU Is the mirror plugged into a socket: Carefully turn the mirror over so that it is facing down. In the center of the decorative plastic box you will see the power cord: carefully remove it. Check the functionality of the mirror by connecting the power cord to the mains.

Don't forget! The socket must be located at a sufficient distance from the mirror, otherwise you will have to use a splitter.

All LED bathroom mirrors are IP44 waterproof. Because of this, they are completely safe for use in rooms with high levels of humidity. Make sure that the socket also has a high degree of moisture protection. One way to do this is with a plastic protective case.

Watch this video to see the process of installing a plug-in illuminated mirror:

If the mirror is connected to the mains: you will find the connection diagram included with the mirror. All that remains to be done is to simply follow the instructions. If you do everything carefully and strictly according to the manufacturer's recommendations, the result will surely please you.

You will see the control box on the back of the product. Your task is to use the terminals to connect the output cable from the wall to the mirror. The connection diagram shows the insulation marking. It will help you not to confuse anything when connecting wires. Thanks to special Wago terminals, you won't need to use electrical tape and twists to insulate the connections.

It is absolutely necessary to make the connection through a transformer so that the LED strip can withstand voltage drops and last longer.

From this video you will learn how to connect the power of the LED backlight through the mains:

And watch this video instruction if in your case it was not foreseen in advance where the power supply wire will be connected:

Idea: in the bathroom you can combine the wiring of the mirror with the wiring of the ceiling light. Then the mirror will turn on and off at the same time as the ceiling light.

    5. Installing the mirror

Just a little bit left: carefully lift the mirror - it is better to do this together with a partner - and hang it on the prepared hooks. Fit the top line of the mirror to the horizontal markings you made with the level. Pass the connection wire through the hole in advance so that you can connect it to the power cable without removing the mirror.

In this video we also invite you to see how, if necessary, you can replace the touch button and the power supply at the mirror:

    6. Additional Features

If your mirror is equipped with a clock and temperature sensor, now is the time to set it up. You will find detailed instructions on how to do this in the box with the product you received.

Congratulations! Mirror installed and ready to go!

If the side lighting covers only the surface of the mirror, table lamps or bedside lamps can be used as an additional light source (for the sink and countertop).

    65. Ceiling + table lamps
In this bathroom in a Houston home, the mirror is illuminated from all directions at once - from below the sink base, to the side of the lamp, from above the ceiling lights.

    66. Table lamp
A table lamp as the main light is acceptable if there is a powerful additional light source - for example, a window.

    67. Table lamp
A floor lamp with a textile shade and subdued light will create a cozy atmosphere in the bathroom. However, it is better not to place the socket in the bathroom in the immediate vicinity of the sink and splashes.

    68. LED lighting
In addition to side lighting, symmetrical lamps illuminate the mirror in the bathroom and the dressing table. The color of the LED backlight can be changed depending on the time of day and mood - using the remote control.

    70. LED lighting
Several lighting options (a hinged lamp above the sink, natural light from the wall, spots on the ceiling) make this bathroom in an unusual python house filled with light.

    71. LED lighting
LED strip fixed in niches, false walls, openings, emphasizes the multi-level room.

    72. LED light
The LED strip can be placed directly behind the mirror or in its frame to ensure uniform illumination of its surface.

    73. LED lighting
Various color and light scenarios look particularly advantageous on brickwork.

    74. LED lighting
In a minimalist interior with concrete walls, frilly lighting will not be very appropriate, but LED lighting will be more than enough.

    75. LED light
Play with the spot for the LED light - to light up the mirror: place it not above or behind the mirror, but, for example, a little further away. Or combine its cool glow with the warm glow of wall sconces.

    76. Spotlights
Spotlights above and behind the mirror can be more than enough to illuminate a small bathroom.

    Annie Hall Interiors

    77. Concealed lighting
Mirror lighting can be hidden, for example, in a recess. And if we are talking about a private house, then a light well can be placed in a niche, which will help save on electricity.

    78. Concealed lighting
It is possible to foresee several hidden lighting scenarios at once and use the remote control to turn on either the ceiling light or the light behind the mirror.

    79. Concealed Lighting
You can create different levels of lighting with overhead, side and concealed light sources.

    80. Concealed lighting
Concealed lighting can accentuate not only the mirror, but also interior details. For example, three-dimensional panels or textured tiles.

    81. Concealed Lighting
Concealed Lighting can be used to illuminate both the bathroom mirror and the washbasin.

    82. Concealed lighting
The LED strip looks particularly advantageous with natural materials, emphasizing their natural texture. For example, with a stone countertop.

    Creative Cleanout Covers, Inc.

    83. Hidden lighting
However, with hidden stone illumination, errors are possible - for example, as in the bathroom in the photo: the borders of the tape or lamp are easily distinguishable, and there is no uniformity of illumination.

    84. Concealed Lighting
Onyx underframe looks spectacular with LED lighting, but there are a few things to consider. For example, an onyx slab must be highly polished to allow light to pass through.

    Wheaton Hushcha Design

    85. Hidden Lighting
Each onyx slab has a completely unique veining pattern. It's a sin not to highlight such an exclusive!

    86. Concealed lighting
Backlit onyx panel will become not only a decorative element of the bathroom, but also an additional light source with a characteristic soft diffused glow.

    87. Natural light
Take advantage of natural light: it provides the correct color reproduction, which is important for a bathroom mirror.

    88. Natural Light
You can illuminate your bathroom mirror with both natural and artificial light. And you can combine these two scenarios: a window on one side, a lamp on the other.

    Safdie Rabines Architects

    89. Natural light
A skylight in the bathroom solves the problem of mirror lighting, at least during the daytime. The rest of the time, use local lighting - small spots and lamps.

    LCN Interiors

    90. Natural light
The skylight above the mirror creates a directional light beam, slightly dimmed due to the angle of incidence.

    Kristin Lam Interiors

    91. Natural light
But you should understand that the installation of a roof window in the bathroom is fraught with a number of difficulties. For example, you need good ventilation so that the glass does not fog up.

    Elina Gordeeva

    92. Natural light
It would be foolish not to use natural light to illuminate a mirror when it comes to a bathroom in a house in the sunny tropics. Even a ventilation window can become such a light source.
