Bathroom color trend

7 of the Most Popular Bathroom Colors in 2023

The bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in the home. It’s where people start and end their daily routine, and where they go to retreat from the world. So it’s important that this room reflects a sense of peace, tranquility, or simply enjoyment that people come to find there. One of the easiest and most affordable ways to update a bathroom is to paint the walls. Homeowners spend an average of $250 for a full bathroom paint job, including labor and materials.

We took a look at emerging color trends for bathroom spaces and reached out to experts in the home design field to get their take on it as well. Below are the hues and colors that are predicted to be most popular for bathrooms in 2023.

1. Shades of Blue

From soft baby blues to deep, rich jewel tones, many shades of blue are predicted to be popular in bathrooms this forthcoming year. Blue is the color most commonly associated with water, which makes it a natural fit for many bathroom designs. From bright and bold to soft and sedate, this color helps enhance feelings of rest and rejuvenation, which are ideal for these spaces.

Interior Design Coordinator Tara Spaulding feels that blues, mixed with greens - another popular color - will have some staying power as well, “We see this trend continuing into 2023 because it feels calming and natural while still being bold enough that it won't feel dated next year or even five years from now”.

Besides, blue pairs well with not only green, but also classic white, cream, and even some grays and purples. This makes it a versatile color that can allow homeowners to change up accents over time, without making the space feel dated.

2. Soft Pinks

Soft shades of pink are also becoming a very popular trend for bathrooms. These colors include blush pink, light peach, mauve, and other shades that have a slight rosy hue to them. These colors are following on the heels of the brighter Millennial Pink that was so popular a few years ago. The difference is that these shades are softer, more sophisticated, and offer bathroom spaces a touch of classical elegance.

Additionally, these softer shades work very well with some of the popular metal colors this year, including copper, brass, and rose gold. They also pair beautifully with earthy tones for those that want to add just a hint of color to an otherwise earth-toned space. If the intention is to create a more daring, retro design choose bolder colors, such as burgundy, turquoise, or black to enhance the vintage look that pinks bring.

3. Warm Earthy Tones

Warm, earthy tones like cream, brown, tan, taupe, and muted, soft whites are also showing up everywhere for 2023. These colors are timeless, never going out of fashion, and work well with other shades including pinks, greens, and blues. Interior designer Villy Nelson of Nelson Cabinetry helps to explain some of their appeal, “Earthy tones are becoming increasingly popular, as people are looking for ways to bring nature into their homes.

Many of these colors can also be layered and used together with one another for a tone-on-tone effect that can add richness to the design. Lindsay Joyce, Founder and Head of Interior Design at 3F Living explains, “Layering warm earth tones such as creams, tans, taupe, cocoa browns, and warm grays will be the primary colors used in 2023 Bathroom Design.”

Earth tones make any space feel rich, inviting, and homey, which can help create a more welcoming bathroom where people want to spend time in. With these colors as the base, it’s easy to incorporate pops of other complementary colors to help add dimension to the space.

4. Shades of Green

Green, along with other natural shades, was the number one color pick for bathrooms in 2022. It’s also poised to become equally popular in 2023. The shades that are being seen are getting softer, though, as well as blending darker shades with lighter hues, and mixing green with blue or with earthy tones. Some colors expected to be seen more frequently in the bathroom include olive, sage, and mint.

Interior Designer Stacey Lewis of Eternity Modern agrees that blues and greens in particular will be popular this year, “These colors create a calming and relaxing atmosphere, making them perfect for use in a bathroom. They can also be used to add a pop of color to a neutral-toned bathroom.”

When incorporating green into the bathroom, consider how it will be used with these other shades. Green can range in tone from yellow to blue, which can mean mixing warmer colors like sage with natural hues for a more subtle look or combining brighter greens with blues for a more oceanic-inspired design.

5. Black and White

Black and white bathrooms are one classic design that never goes out of style. And this color combination is getting a lot of attention for 2023 as well. They are sophisticated and elegant in design, yet allow for pops of many different colors to be incorporated into the room as well. Colors like gray, blue, green, and even red can all play beautifully in a black and white bathroom.

Spaulding agrees, “Black and white is a classic combination that has been popular for years. It's a simple way to make a statement without adding too much color to your space. We expect to see more black-and-white bathrooms as people continue working to create more minimalist spaces in their homes.”

This combination can appear light and airy, or chic and moody, depending on how much black or white is used, and the amount of natural light that the space has. Popular bathroom designs for this classic duo include modern and retro, which lend a lot of versatility to opt for bolder tile choices such as patterned, geometric, or checkerboard tiles.

6. Dark Tones

Dark tones and shades are also becoming popular bathroom colors for 2023. This includes not only dark wall colors like slate gray and anthracite but also black countertops and fixtures. These dark colors can be used to create modern bathroom designs, or to help add depth and gravity to a space. These deep and sophisticated bathrooms can also include pops of color or hints of white to help lighten the space.

Lewis particularly likes the look of the black countertop trend, “Black countertops are a bold and modern choice for a bathroom. They can make a space feel more sophisticated and stylish, and they pair well with both light and dark-colored fixtures. Additionally, black countertops can be used to create a dramatic contrast in a bathroom.”

Just be sure not to go too dark in small bathrooms or bathrooms that don’t have a lot of natural light, as this can make the entire space appear cramped or overly dim.

7. Metal Hues

Faucet and fixture colors shouldn’t be overlooked, and there are some hot trends in these areas as well in 2023. For fixtures, look for black toilets and sinks, along with some softer biscuit or almond hues to pair with an earthy-toned bathroom.

Regarding faucets, metal hues such as copper, brass, and other golden accents are very popular right now. These colors mix well with just about anything, from pinks and peaches to greens and blues. They also stand out on black countertops and add a touch of warmth to an otherwise cold or sterile space.

Spaulding agrees, “One trend we see emerging in bathrooms is the use of copper and brass accents, which add a touch of luxury to an otherwise simple space. Copper fixtures are especially popular for their ability to add a unique look to any bathroom design.” Consider mixing some of these finishes in with the rest of the bathroom to add a special touch and help dress up the space.

Lasting Colors for Bathroom Designs

Many of the colors expected to be popular in bathrooms this forthcoming year have a lot of staying power and lasting design elements. With the exception of darker tones and soft pinks, blues, greens, and black and white bathrooms have been popular for years with no indication that these will be going out of style any time soon. Likewise, warm earthy tones are also a popular trend that never fades. Consider creating a more timeless and lasting bathroom design by incorporating any of these color trends for 2023.

Bathroom Color Trends for 2022

The bathroom plays an essential role in the home: It’s where we typically start and end our day, as well as use it for relaxation and rejuvenation. As such, bathroom design can have a big impact on our mood — for better or worse. Of course, color is a significant part of any interior design, especially in a room that is used so frequently.

Bathroom “fashion” began when bathrooms became a fixture for the interior of the home during the Victorian era. The initial all-white décor helped homeowners feel bathrooms were clean.

White bathrooms continue to be a perennial favorite. Advances in tile manufacturing have created a broad range of sizes, shapes, textures and even dimensional aspects that can add interest to a contemporary white bathroom.

If you’re wondering what colors are trending for bathrooms lately, Better Homes and Gardens magazine suggests five winning shades. Fortunately, ceramic tile has a seemingly endless selection of tile colors and color combinations. Ranging from soft natural hues to bold tones, here’s our take on the latest bathroom color trends, expressed in the latest ceramic tile options.

Soft Greens

This soft, almost neutral green gauged porcelain tile XXL panel in a gemstone look is a great example of one of the latest color trends for bathrooms.

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest tile trends, you’ll know that green is currently a popular choice for all spaces. However, muted shades of green tile are especially trending bathroom colors, as they can lend a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation. Because these soft greens are gentle and subtle, you can’t use too much of them. If you choose to add accents, go with warm whites or defining blacks.

Look for soft shades of green that you can find in nature — such as eucalyptus, moss and olive — to satisfy our biophilic need to connect with the outdoors.

Cozy Earth Tones

Warm, caramel-toned wood-look ceramic tile lines the flooring, walls, ceiling and shower of this gorgeous master bathroom.

Two different trends go into this color recommendation: the popularity of biophilic tile and the general warming of colors used in interior décor. Warm earth tones are one of the biggest 2022 trending bathroom colors as a result of these two design shifts. You can’t go wrong with wood-look and stone-look tile in these shades.

Instead of cooler neutrals such as whites and grays, try out cozier earthy tile tones such as cream, beige, terracotta, and taupe.

Soothing Blues

Soft blue is one of the most popular color trends for bathrooms in 2022, and this dazzling blue mosaic tile backsplash is an excellent example to follow.

Blue isn’t necessarily a new bathroom color trend, but it continues to be high on the list.

Blue tile is popular for bathrooms because of its association with relaxation and wellness. Did you know that light blue has been proven to promote feelings of understanding, healing, health, and tranquility?

This is so much the case that a recent study by Behr and Zillow found that adding light blue to your bathroom could actually increase your home’s value. Specifically, survey respondents said they’d be:

Make the most of this 2022 bathroom color trend by choosing a wispy, soft shade of blue and using it heavily throughout your space.

Dramatic Jewel Tones

Varying shades of emerald green lend a royal touch to this jewel-toned bathroom.

Not all of the current bathroom color trends are soft — dramatic jewel tones are also in favor right now.

Tile in jewel tones is the perfect choice for creating a luxurious, even regal look. Consider rich, saturated shades of:

Note that if you’re looking for small bathroom color trends, jewel-toned tile is an ideal choice. A rich jewel tone may be overwhelming in a large space, such as a kitchen or living room, but could add just the right amount of boldness for a small bathroom.

Jewel-toned tile is a favorite for creating a jewel box effect in small guest bathrooms and powder rooms.

Black and Charcoal

Charcoal paired with dimensional gauged porcelain panels tile creates the ultimate in sophistication.

In recent years, black tile (and shades thereof) has risen in popularity and is appreciated for its ability to create a sophisticated, contemporary feel.

Classic and vintage-inspired options include stark black and white tile in layout patterns such as subway, octagon and dot, and checkerboard. Hexagons and penny rounds are also popular shapes for black tile.

Black tile in a subway pattern gives this bathroom a vintage-inspired look.

At one time, the pandemic clearly showed that full-fledged self-care and relaxation sessions can be arranged in your own bathroom. Now, without waiting for new lockdowns, design is aiming to make the bathroom not just a place for hygiene procedures, but also a full-fledged home spa. nine0003

Most importantly, this trend is not only for owners of spacious bathrooms - you can add elements of wellness to a small bathroom in a typical apartment. For this:

This is no longer just an area for hygiene procedures and a few square meters that are used exclusively for utilitarian purposes, but a full-fledged room that can be no less stylish and comfortable than a living room or bedroom. The easiest way to add softness and warmth to any space is to introduce natural textures into the interior, primarily wood in its various manifestations.

But, as you know, wet areas are not the best place for natural solid wood, since this material does not like moisture and temperature changes. Therefore, various alternatives can be used. For example:

To make the effect not only visual, act on other senses: put a warm floor under the tiles, place an aroma diffuser with the smell of the forest, etc.

But it is not without reason that large analytical companies choose the colors of the year - trends can also be traced in this area. So, the design of a fashionable bathroom in 2023 will be based on noble, eye-pleasing natural tones. They can be divided into several groups:

So that natural shades do not look too flat, designers complement them with pronounced textures. These can be both original materials (for example, a stone sink or marble slabs on the wall), as well as their high-quality imitations.

Large-format ceramics include fragments over 30 cm wide, and some can reach up to a meter (for example, porcelain stoneware slabs). Rectangular tiles are usually produced in 30x60 cm or 45x90 cm formats, there are also narrower and elongated models that imitate, for example, wooden boards.

This cladding has two important advantages:

Don't be afraid of large details: choose porcelain stoneware or tiles in soothing shades, smooth or with imitation of natural textures, so that the wall decoration looks whole and does not disturb the proportions of a small room.

nine0002 Furnishings should be not only stylish, but also as comfortable as possible. To make the design look concise, stylish and holistic, as in the photo below, the space is equipped with elegant-looking, but multifunctional appliances. Behind smooth lines and a beautiful surface hide complex smart systems, voice assistants and dozens of technologies invisible in everyday life.

Things to look out for:

Technological models are more expensive than standard ones, but this is an investment in your own comfort. It will pay off as soon as you feel how much the experience of using the bathroom will change. nine0003

But now more and more obvious is the tendency to emphasize the decorative component of the mirror. It becomes the central element, the main focus of the entire space. This can be helped by an unusual shape, a massive or bright frame, LED backlighting, which at the same time will provide additional local lighting, which is also very important for this area. Curly sconces or any other decor will also help to attract attention. nine0003

Product design can be very different:

Since minimalism is in trend, there should not be many decorations, each one is concise and self-sufficient. These can be:

When choosing decor, remember that the bathroom is a wet area. If you want to hang a picture, it must be protected from moisture. It is better not to put scented candles where it is always hot and there is a lot of steam. In general, when choosing accessories, pay attention to the material from which they are made so that they do not deteriorate ahead of time.

To save space in typical bathrooms, a built-in bowl is usually installed, if not abandoned at all in favor of a shower cabin. nine0003

But more and more spectacular freestanding bathtubs are appearing in design projects - and in 2023 there will only be more of them in bathroom design. Manufacturers are also following the trend, releasing models in different colors, sizes and shapes.

This type of sanitary ware has several features to consider. Firstly, it is not suitable for very small rooms - it is still better to place a shower or a compact built-in model on several squares. Secondly, the supply of communications will be non-standard, and this must be planned at the repair stage. Finally, when choosing a place for a separate bowl, remember that it should be convenient to approach it: both to climb in or out, and during cleaning. nine0003

The design of such bowls today is truly diverse. These can be oval, rectangular, non-standard models. Whether with a clean, minimalist design or with a retro feel: curved legs, colored body and accent taps. Choose a product for the overall concept of the interior and complement it with appropriate finishes, furniture, and decor.

Previously, ceramic was the only option because it was the only one suitable for hot, humid environments. Now there are many stylish alternatives:

Porcelain stoneware or tiles don't have to be discarded - it's still the best finish for wet areas. But you can and should dilute them with other material - you get a stylish and interesting interior. If you're adding wallpaper to the tiles, it's best to hang them in a dry part of the room, such as behind a mirror, at the entrance, or in a storage area. Even a moisture-resistant washable cover in the shower will quickly become unusable. Paint and decorative plaster are usually used in a dry area or at the top - the bottom of the wall is decorated with more practical ceramics. nine0003

There are different models of bowls. Mortise sinks are the most common, but overhead sinks are becoming especially popular now. They are simply placed on the countertop, where a hole is made for the siphon. In this case, the joint between the bowl and the surface does not require careful sealing.

But the popularity of this type of sink is not so much due to its functionality as its appearance. Now manufacturers offer a large selection of models: round or oval, square or rectangular, classic white and spectacular black, even colored. The material also varies: from sanitary ware to stone. nine0003 eleven
