Small Backyard Landscaping Ideas - 14 DIYs to Try

Plan Your Space

1/15

You might think that keeping a small yard open and loosely planned would make it feel bigger, but the opposite is true. The key to a more spacious feeling is all in the organization. Define the spaces in your small yard and make their purposes clear. Delineate a dining or lounging area with a stone patio, or separate the play area from the dining area with plantings. All of a sudden, it looks like there's so much more space.

Play Up the Side Yard

2/15

Side yards are often ignored, or just relegated to garbage can storage. Used correctly, however, this precious square footage can help you expand your usable space. Incorporate the side yard into your landscaping plan by planting a culinary herb garden, or add a slim cafe table for a morning coffee retreat. Surely, you can find room for those garbage cans in the garage.

Create a Destination

3/15

A small yard will feel more grand if you turn it into a destination. Create an outdoor room with a nicely arranged patio set and grill. Or add a special feature like a fountain, fire pit, or cozy reading nook to make this tiny spot worth the visit.

Frame a View

4/15

Architectural features like arbors or pergolas are perennial favorites in small yards. Use one to frame a view, hang a swing, or even plant a climbing garden. The height of these backyard structures gives the illusion of more space, while the features themselves add interest and character.

Choose the Right Trees

5/15

You can plant trees in a small yard so long as you choose ones that grow up instead of out. Taller, thinner shapes, such as columnar evergreens, and dwarf varieties of shrubs will give you lush landscaping without eating up all your space.

Use Levels

6/15

Incorporating terraced landscaping helps to designate spaces, making a small yard look bigger. Elevate your dining area, or sink a conversation pit around an outdoor fireplace. Terracing can also carve out more space for plantings, while a lower wall can double as bench seating.

Skip the Fence

7/15

With the neighbors close by, you may feel the urge to put up a privacy fence. Try to resist. Your yard will appear bigger if the eye can take in the plantings and trees beyond your property line. With a continuous view, the unobstructed greenery can all seem part of the same landscape.

Garden Vertically

8/15

Attention plant lovers: filling a small yard with shrubs and flowers is a surefire way to clutter the space. Instead, grow your garden vertically with hanging baskets, wall-mounted flower pots, or stacked crates of greenery. You’ll add color without taking up precious real estate on the ground.

Stick with Small Furniture

9/15

Not only does bulky patio furniture take up lots of space, it also overwhelms a tiny backyard. Stick with smaller pieces instead—preferably ones with a see-through pattern, which lets the eye travel further.

Shop Smartly

10/15

When shopping for a small yard, always buy patio furniture that’s versatile and functional. For example, collapsible chairs and portable fire pits can be stashed inside the garage whenever you need more space. Double-duty pieces (like a bench that converts into a picnic table) also create less clutter, making your yard appear bigger than it is.

Texturize Your Yard

11/15

It’s true that layers of plants, shrubs, and garden features add interest to a yard. Thankfully for homeowners with limited space to spare, texture also creates the same eye-catching affect. Select a handful of plants with a variety of textures, like wispy ornamental grasses, coarse Canna lilies, and delicate cosmos. When arranging your flower beds, place the bolder varieties near the front to create an illusion of depth.

Create Curves

12/15

Straight garden features sometimes look blunt and unsatisfying. To add depth and dimension, rely on winding and curving lines instead, whether it’s for a garden path or landscape edging. The swirling shape draws the eye, creating a sense of movement and opening up the space.

Store Items in the Garage

13/15

If possible, don’t impose on your yard with clunky sheds or storage bins. Keep clutter at bay by stashing yard tools, outdoor equipment, and children’s toys in the garage instead. As a result, your property will look larger and more streamlined.

Dallas Small Yard - Spectacular Pool/Fountain

Dallas Small Yard - Spectacular Fountain/Pool. This one of a kind fountain blends with this traditional home and is inspired by Italy's Villa D' Este Walk of 100 Fountains. To create a lush garden feel and still have lots of room for gatherings generally is a challenge but we were able to strike the right balance. The center fountain provides a focal point from the home. The brick patterns and color was an exact match to the home brick details and was carried to the brick surround of the fountain sconces. Also, the center water feature provides some seating with the raised basin and tied in with the raised planters which created maximum privacy with the plantings. The lower basin provided a wrap around feature to enjoy throughout the space and lengthen the line of sight. Black Granite was used inside the feature for more reflection and contrast. Lush plantings, pots, a living green wall and the synthetic grass create a definite garden feel, but still allow plenty of space to entertain all day or all night under the string lights. So come on over and enjoy this small but sensational backyard. FarleyPoolDesigns.com

Backyard - 95 photos of modern landscape design ideas

Although the warm season is already far behind, most owners of country houses continue to cherish ideas about decorating their plots. A few decades ago, these ideas and thoughts were directly related to the use of homestead land for sowing and harvesting. Now, the owners of summer and country estates have changed their orientation from a labor camp to a place for family vacations.

In this article we will look at photos of the views of the backyard, get acquainted with the design solutions that can be applied. We will select the simplest concepts for the design of the given type of area.

If you own a private or country mansion, then you have an idea that the design of the area adjacent to the dwelling is just as important as the arrangement of the internal space of the house.

Everyone has heard about the term "landscape design", even the inhabitants of remote villages. But not everyone will agree to exchange the harmonious placement of flower beds for an artificial fountain or pond.

Homeowners love beautiful yet versatile backyard designs. Therefore, in order for your efforts to turn into a pleasing picture, you need to seriously approach the planning of the area.

At the same time, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money to improve the surrounding area, just a small fraction of your free time will suffice.

In order for a beautiful backyard to delight your eyes for many years, you need to find time to maintain all the buildings, furniture, ponds in order.

Summary of the article:

Backyard layout

The courtyard of a country house is a nearby area that welcomes both owners and guests. We can say with confidence that the first impression of the owners is formed from the very first minutes, as soon as they approach the exit to the backyard or garden plot.

Before decorating the backyard of a private house, think about what is the concept of beauty for you? Visualize the desired result, and focus on what matters to you: practicality in use, stay in it, or attractiveness and magnificence of design?

Pay attention to your lifestyle, the presence of children or animals, the frequency of meetings with friends, organizing parties. The choice of details and elements of the courtyard interior depends on the answers to the above questions and on personal preferences.

If you take into account all sorts of nuances at the initial stage, then in the future, you will save a considerable amount of money and time for changing, finalizing and straightening the design of the backyard.

The main condition on which your landscape design depends is the size of the plot. If the area is large, then the only thing that will limit the flight of your fantasies will be the lack of a lot of money. Important in planning is the type of soil, placement in relation to the cardinal points.

If you have a small area, it is important not to "litter" it with unnecessary details and use every free square meter for aesthetic benefit. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the priorities, because it is impossible to place a place for a hammock, a barbecue, a playground on a few square meters.

Having decided and choosing the best option, we go to recreate the practical part, that is, the placement of all elements and objects. Professional designers advise dividing it into square segments for easier and rational use of space, each of which will contain a certain detail (flower beds, ponds, furniture, gazebos).

Using this technique, the entire area will be evenly filled with various buildings or decorations in the form of flower beds, which will create a harmonious appearance of the backyard.

Before starting construction work, we check the condition of the soil, if we find a place where water accumulates, we lay a drainage system (drainage).

At the same time, all work is underway to place all the mechanisms necessary for the full operation of artificial reservoirs, fountains and irrigation of vegetation.

Tiled paths, steps

Garden paths are an indispensable part of every country house. In addition to the main one - safe movement, they also perform secondary, but important functions - dividing the area into zones, decorating the territory. When laying out the paths, concrete slabs, flat stones, cobblestones are used, or they are simply covered with a large amount of pebbles, while fencing off with a low curb.

By creating a combination of the above materials, it is possible to obtain not only the desired practicality, but also a wonderful decoration for any backyard.

Sealed forms and landscaping are things that are closely related. Someone finds harmony in the smoothness of contours, lines, rounded bushes or flower beds, while the other prefers rigor - straight garden paths, square-shaped bushes, cut as if “under the ruler”.

As they say: “There is no comrade for taste and color”, because it depends only on you what the decor of this site will be and only you know what will bring harmony to your soul.

The planting of vegetation in flower pots or flower beds should be planned so that flowering of some varieties is followed by flowering of others. In this situation, the backyard will be able to delight you and your loved ones with bright floral colors for a long time to come.

If your area is represented by humps, hills - do not rush to level them and harm the environment, just create artificial embankments and level their slopes. Also, so that there is not such a noticeable difference between hills and lowlands, attach neat steps that will focus all attention on yourself.

Fountains and ponds in the backyard

In rare cases, landscaping in the oriental style does without the presence of any water sources (pond, fountain). As you know, all European specialists in landscape design are inspired by the oriental style, which brings harmony with the surrounding and spiritual world.

Eastern sages believe that water is the source of life, and in combination with the earth it symbolizes balance, harmony, unity.

It is quite difficult to build an artificial reservoir, it is necessary to resort to the help of professionals, who, in turn, will study the features of the site, select a suitable place, and carry out all the communications necessary for reservoirs.

All the money spent, time and effort will pay off when you watch the splashing of fish in the pond or calm down from the sound of water in the fountain.

Fire bowl

Every modern backyard must have a fire pit for gatherings, socializing, barbecuing or roasting marshmallows.
