Add fireplace to living room


4 OPTIONS FOR UPDATING OR INSTALLING A FIREPLACE

If there’s one thing I’ve become exceptionally comfortable with over the last few years, it’s adding architectural interest to a home that had absolutely none to begin with. Turning shit to gold, if you will. 

 

As a solution to the 24 ft. Narnia wall in our living room, Angelo and I have decided to separate the LR + DR and create a fireplace flanked by built-ins. Since a fireplace does not currently exist here, we need to build one from scratch. 

 

Here’s the rough plan that I shared via IG:

 

 

 

 

 

Now, let me set the mood.

The purpose of fireplaces is to (wait for it) set a mood and in our situation, create an aesthetically pleasing focal point where one did not previously exist. 

 

I mean, I love a good, raging fire in the most non-pyromaniac way. A wood burning fire is my absolute favorite scent of all time.

 

But fireplaces are no longer meant to be a main source of heat in your home. It’s 2020, chances are you’re not gatherin’ round a fire covered in skinned bear fur to keep you and your family warm.

 

Today I’m going to be sharing four options for installing a fireplace one in your home where a fireplace does not already exist. These options can also work if you already have a fireplace and it’s non-functioning/you’re looking to add a new insert.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS?

(Before we dive in, I want to say that the information I’m sharing is just scraping the surface of each option. Please use this post for guidance and do your own research before determining what will work best for you)!

 

.01 || electric 

Electric inserts are the most cost-effective and can actually provide a good amount of heat, but, most electric inserts don’t look like a real fire. To my point above, if a fireplace nowadays is mostly for aesthetics and to set a mood, are electric inserts really going to accomplish that?

 

Although electric inserts have come a long way, most on the market today look tacky. I’d rather save up for a fireplace that produces real fire and I don’t have to worry about fooling anyone.

 

Here’s how I look at it…

 

Angelo and I are going to spend a good amount of time, money, and effort into creating a beautiful living room built-in area with a nice mantel, and then we’re going to add………an electric insert? It’s like being served hot dogs at a black tie wedding.

 

Dimplex makes inserts that do look pretty realistic, but I’m still not 100% sold on any of them.

.02 || ventless/Vent-free/GEL firebox

Ventless fireplaces don’t require a vent/chimney and are fueled by alcohol gel inserts that actually produce a real fire (although maybe not a raging fire).  

 

There are quite a bit of ventless options on the market, including some *luxury* ones that cost up to $10k.

I believe you can buy a firebox and ventless fireplace insert to use together. 

Please do your research on a ventless fireplace because some towns don’t allow them or may have certain code for installing one. They do need to meet federal safety standards before being sold to the public.

A few ventless options:

 

.03 || gas/Direct vent

If you’re starting completely from scratch like we are, this may be the most complicated/costly option over ventless and electric, but you get a *real* fireplace.

 

Based on research and speaking to a few people who have had a gas line installed to hook up a new fireplace, it costs anywhere between $800-$3,000 (just to hook up the gas line, not including the actual fireplace). The cost mostly depends on where a gas line currently exists in relation to where you want to install one.

 

My friend Dana (she’s awesome, follow her) hooked up a gas fireplace in her home and has encouraged me to do the same. She also tiled the fireplace herself!

Consider how often you plan to use it, how it will affect your gas bill, and if your town/city allows it, do you need a permit to install?

. 04 || COMPLETELY FAUX/DECORATIVE

If you really could care less about having a functioning fireplace (but still want something aesthetically pleasing), then this option is for you. What do you want inside the mantel? Aspen logs? Fire balls? Greenery? Art? Books? A mirror?  The possibilities are endless.

ONCE YOU’VE DECIDED ON YOUR INSERT…

You can choose your mantel based on the fireplace insert type and size.

 

I won’t go too much into mantels, but what I will say is that I’m personally leaning towards a cast stone mantle, which is a material like limestone, like this:

 

 

With cast stone material, you don’t have to worry about tiling around the firebox – you (sort of) just drop the firebox or whatever insert you choose inside. From my research, it seems less complicated than the wood/tile/fireplace insert combo. And since the cast is non-combustible, it should meet fire code.

 

If you can find someone to make a cast mantle for you, you can customize color, curves, coves, size, etc. (if you can’t find someone local, I’ve seen some custom stone makers on Etsy)!

 

On average cast mantels around $2k, which actually may be around the same cost as buying a wood mantle and tile for the surround. IMO, a cast mantle has more perceived value than a wood mantle with tile.

1. Go for a low living room fireplace

To complement and enhance a contemporary look in a home, take a linear approach to your fireplace.

A sleek, horizontal will reflect the clean lines used throughout these spaces, fitting seamlessly in with the overall style. Placing beneath a modernist painting or, if in more of a family living room, allows this subtle design to still take center stage.

This is also a smart choice for minimalist living room schemes, as the lack of mantle prevents any clutter from accumulating over time,

2. Use a fender in a traditional space

If you're drawn to more traditional living room interiors, take a cue from classic fireplaces and add an upholstered fender.

As well as preventing ash from entering the room, if you were to make this large enough it can even act as additional seating at peak entertaining times additional seating without taking up previous floor space.

Select a leather covering for a hard-wearing option, but softer materials such as velvets can also be used if it's simply a visual addition rather than expected to be used constantly as seating.

3. Add interest with your backplate

The interior of the fireplace itself is an oft-neglected space for introducing pattern and interest to a scheme.

Traditional fireplaces use iron fire backplates, but swapping this out for a bold fireplace tile ideas – in this case a herringbone brick design – adds a stylish heightened visual interest in an unexpected location, without being overpowering in a pared-back or neutral living room.

4. Hang a mirror above the fireplace

Living room mirrors are a popular choice to place above a fireplace, allowing extra light to bounce around a small living room – even when the lights are down low – to allow the fireplace to shine bright.

Yet, rather than a pretty extra, look at tying them into the fireplace structure. Extend the fireplace material upwards, creating a mirror frame that flows organically from the base. Make sure to include a mantle, for both extra stability and to allow the use of gently flickering candles.

5. Take it up a notch

Traditional wood burning fireplaces are more often than not associated with being straight on the ground, but they don't necessarily have to.

Raising the ground of a fireplace in a living room can give you more flexibility to how to use the space, such as the wooden slat here providing a handy seat. It's also worth considering if you have small children or animals running around.

6. Size up your frame

To make sure all eyes are on your fireplace, give it the framing it deserves.

Although the fire surround may seem like the be-all and end-all when framing a fireplace, the insert can add that extra bit of drama that will elevate the whole look. 

Choose an interior insert which balances well with the surround, like this dark, dramatic insert picking up on the deepest veins of the marble surround.

7. Make the flue a feature

Depending on which fuel your stove takes, you may need a flue, so why not make this part of the feature.

This Charnwood option shows how homey and warming the addition of a fully visible flue can look. A lighter colorway is perfect for a softer touch, but a monochromatic look would be a chic addition to a contemporary space.

8. Take your surround to the floor

For a distinctive, tailored look, double down on the fireplace design. When commissioning a bespoke surround, ask whether a hearth in the same stone can be made to create a smart, integrated finish.

Another tip is to fit the hearth flush into wooden floorboards for a modern feel. Soften hard stone surfaces with natural, textural materials such as a rugs alongside contemporary living room lighting and upholstered furniture.

9. Break the rules

Rules of symmetry say that a modern living room fireplace should sit in the center of a wall – but that’s not always necessary.

In this design from Tollgard, the fireplace extends into an L-shape from the indent in the wall housing the TV, creating visual interest and a natural link between the two. 

By having the fire to one side, it's also easier to literally switch off and focus on the fire when lit, plus as it's nearer at eye level than the screen it allows for a more natural visual connection for those in the room.

10. Choose a rustic option in a country living room

Reclaimed natural wooden boards on the walls and floor with an unadorned stone fireplace surround take things back several steps to simpler times in this country living room. 

Choosing reclaimed wood may take a bit more work but it’s eco-friendly and has a beautiful patina that new wood needs years to achieve.

How do I choose a fireplace?

Because they are such an emotive piece of our homes, it's important to choose the style which speaks to you and you style the most. That said, there are some additional considerations to keep in mind.

'Think of your stove as a piece of furniture for heating,' advises Cedric Wells, Creative Director of Charnwood. 'A stove is quite a considered investment and one that is likely to remain in the room for many years so choose a classic style that won’t date.' 

Size, too, is key. 'It is important you purchase a stove with the correct kW output in relation to the size of your room,' notes Cedric. 

'It is better to have a smaller stove that you can burn hard rather than a large stove that produces too much warmth as you will end up opening doors and windows to disperse the heat.'

How do I look after my fireplace?

Once you've selected the perfect fireplace, there are steps to take to ensue it is kept in optimal condition.

'The Spring and Summer months are the perfect time to start thinking about maintenance and preparing your stove for another winter season,' advises Vicky Naylor General Manager, ACR Stoves . 'Remember to have the chimney swept to remove any blockages and build-up of soot and make sure to check door seals for wear and tear.'

Michael Coke, Senior Development Engineer at Stovax, elaborates on maintenance for solid fuel stoves. 'Like your stove, your chimney also requires maintenance. Chimneys need to have a clear passageway for the combustion gases to exit your home. Along with obstructions, soot, deposits and tar can build up in your chimney over time, reducing the draw, making the stove run less efficiently and putting your property at risk of a chimney fire.'

'If you are burning wood, ensure your chimney is swept at least twice a year; this can be reduced to once if you are using a multi-fuel stove to burn fuels other than wood,' continues Michael. 'It is also important to have your stove serviced by a qualified installer to ensure you see the best performance from your appliance.'

For gas fires, 'it is recommended that gas appliances are safety checked and serviced at least once a year by a registered gas service engineer,' reminds Alex Sheldon, Development Manager at Gazco. 'You can find a qualified engineer on the Gas Safe website.

In terms of electric fires, Jack Drew, Electrical Development Engineer at Gazco notes that, 'maintenance of an electric fire is easy and simple, and normally just involves dusting and cleaning the fuel effects, plus any accessible air inlets and outlets in order to maintain the optimum heat output and efficiency from the fire.'

What's better gas or wood fireplace?

There are four categories of fireplace: woodburning, gas burning, ethanol burning and electric – all have their advantages and disadvantages. 'It is important to consider local smoke control restrictions that may be in place in the area,' advises Gazco's Jack Drew.

Wood that’s used for an open fire or stove needs to be stored somewhere dry and with this type of fireplace. Cedric Wells of Charwood notes that a wood burning stove, 'also gives you the freedom from dependence on the large energy utilities. At a time when there is increasing concern over stability of supply throughout the world it is nice to know that a log burner gives, in a most beautiful way, that certainty of warmth during periods of interrupted supply. '

Gas fireplaces are low-maintenance and are renowned for generating good amounts of heat. They also don't require a chimney meaning 'they can be installed virtually anywhere so long as a balanced flue can be fitted,' notes Vicky Naylor from ACR. 'Their temperature control makes them easy to operate and you can have remote control or smart models that allow you to set timers and temperature from your smartphone or tablet.'

Ethanol fires are becoming increasingly popular and are perfect for a contemporary scheme. However, bear in mind that they don’t give out as much heat as gas. 

Electric are the cheapest – both to buy and to run. As the country moves to renewable energy sources, the interest in electric fires is expected to soar. 'You can also enjoy its flame effect without the ambient heat, which makes it a great feature all year round,' adds Vicky.

Wood burning fireplaces

Favorably differ among competitors by the presence of a real live fire, with a characteristic smell and sounds. They create comfort and warmth in the house, help to relax after a hard day. A good wood-burning fireplace can heat a room with high quality even in the most severe frosts.

But this type of foci also has its drawbacks. First, the most obvious - they can only be installed in country houses, in spacious rooms with high ceilings. It is unrealistic to put such a fireplace in a city apartment for reasons of fire safety and special installation conditions. For a wood-burning fireplace, it is necessary to carry out a chimney, reinforce the floor, organize additional protection for nearby surfaces. In addition, you need to regularly clean the fireplace itself and the space around it. You should also take care of the availability of free space for the firewood.

Gas fireplace

It has a greater variety in the design of models. It is also effective for solving the problems of heating large rooms, however, for its operation it is not necessary to stock up on firewood, since it runs on natural gas. It has a temperature control function.

They are much easier to install than wood-burning counterparts, the only significant drawback is the need to bring a gas pipe to the fireplace, which makes them unsafe to use. In addition, to install such a fireplace, you need to involve a gas specialist and go through numerous approvals in the relevant authorities.

Electric fireplace

Modern technologies have made it possible to achieve maximum realism of fire in such fireplaces, using characteristic visual and sound effects. Thanks to them, electric fireplaces are outwardly almost indistinguishable from real wood-burning ones. At the same time, many models have the function of adjustable heating with enough power to fill rooms up to 20 m2 with heat. An important feature is that the heating can be turned off and the fireplace will only work in decorative mode, which allows you to use the hearths at any time of the year, even on a hot summer evening.

They do not require coordination and complex installation - a small space and an electrical outlet nearby are enough. They are easy to maintain, fireproof and suitable for absolutely any type of premises - it can be a city apartment or a country house. In addition, they are mobile, and in case of moving, the electric fireplace can be easily taken with you.

Biofireplace

This fireplace produces a real live fire, while it may well be installed in a city apartment, since it does not require a chimney. It runs on environmentally friendly fuel (bioethanol) and does not emit harmful combustion products.

But such a fireplace can only play a decorative role, since the heating function is implemented in it very poorly. In addition, the fuel for it is quite expensive, so the operation of such a fireplace is quite expensive. And, despite the absence of the need to coordinate the installation of such a fireplace with the fire department, it is still potentially dangerous due to open fire with flammable liquid.

Variations according to installation site

In addition, conditionally, fireplaces can be divided into groups according to the principle of installation - wall, corner, built-in and island.

The former are placed directly against one of the walls of the room and frame the hearth zone with a portal of a suitable style.

A corner fireplace also looks good in small rooms, as it saves space. It can be installed in any corner, but it is better near the inner walls - then it will heat several rooms at once.

If the hearth provides for the possibility of heating (for example, in wood-burning or electric models), then such a fireplace will work to heat two rooms at once.

Furniture and interior details in the living room with fireplace

The fireplace occupies a central place in the interior of the living room, and this should be taken into account when arranging the furniture. All items should stand so that nothing interferes with the comfort of spending time by the fireplace with the whole family or in solitude.

Ideally, the area with a fireplace should be a separate corner where the atmosphere of comfort is recreated, and where everything is conducive to relaxation. There is an opinion that a fireplace is only suitable for spacious rooms, but this is not so. A small apartment can also be supplemented with this item of warmth and comfort.

For a small apartment

In rooms of small areas, it is better to choose built-in models of electric fireplaces, since they are mounted in a niche in the wall, without occupying the usable space of the room at all. You can also consider options with compact corner models.

Large apartment

A large room, a spacious hall can also be harmoniously complemented by an electric fireplace built into the wall. The model of the fireplace must be selected depending on the features of the interior. In spacious apartments, full-fledged fireplace sets of small sizes and island fireplaces, which will visually zone the space of the room, will look no less appropriate.
