Build Suspense
Folding Chair Design Co. / Jenn Verrier Photography
Folding Chair Design Co. built a dining room wine wall that is both practical and decorative. Bottles are suspended thanks to floor-to-ceiling suspension cables that make them seemingly float. To ensure that your wine wall isn't an accident waiting to happen, be sure to build secure storage, or call in a professional. And keep in mind that exposing your bottles to unpredictable temperatures and natural light isn't ideal for wine collectors, but is just fine if you enjoy wine with dinner and tend to drink your stash as fast as you restock the wine rack.

Paint a Half Wall Border
Urbanology Designs / J Turnbow Photography
If you're tired of the white walls in your dining room but don't want to go to the trouble and expense of repainting the whole room, get yourself some painter's tape and add a color border, a simple DIY project that won't even require a ladder. In this light and spacious dining room, Urbanology Designs painted a wrap-around painted navy half wall border that adds visual interest and makes the space feel cozier and more grounded while seated around the table. Airy pendant lights anchor the table without blocking views. A pair of framed prints that straddle the two sections of the wall and a leaning ladder on the opposite wall that stretches beyond the wall border help bring the eye up and make the color blocking feel cohesive.

Make Every Wall a Gallery Wall
Tyler Karu Design and Interiors / Photo by Justin Levesque
Even those with stand-alone dining rooms tend to reserve them for Sunday meals and special occasions (if they're not borrowing them for makeshift home offices). An off-duty formal dining room can sometimes feel like an empty stage set. One way to ensure that your dining room feels alive, and to give yourself and your family and friends a reason to poke their heads in even when dinner isn't on the table is to treat them like an at-home art gallery where you can hang artwork, kids art, or family photos, or a combination of the above. Tyler Karu Design + Interiors turned every wall of this 1700s farmhouse dining room into a gallery wall. Antique French chairs, a modern table, and sculptural knotted rope pendant lighting completes the eclectic look and makes this an ideal place for catching up on emails or doing giant puzzles and craft projects.

Is your wall above the dining table still empty? We tell you how to highlight it, how to decorate and fill it: 22 beautiful ideas for wall decor
The fact that the dining area also requires decoration, many began to think quite recently. In most cases, the wall above the dining table was occupied by a calendar (okay, if not last year's) or whatever paintings came to hand. Today, the attitude towards interior design has changed a lot, and the dining area has begun to pay no less attention than the interior of a bedroom or bathroom. The place where we meet with the whole family every day should be not only comfortable, but also stylish and cozy. We talk about the decor of the wall above the dining table using examples.
Classic wall decoration above the dining area. Typically, gastronomic images, a series of black and white images or a collection of reproductions are chosen for decoration. The choice of a picture is a matter of taste, but one should not forget about the harmonious combination of the image, the frame and the interior itself.
Another version of the traditional decor for the dining area. Ideal for Provence, Country, Rustic styles.
If your nightstands are full of straw hats, wicker baskets, unwanted vinyl records, cutting boards or vintage radios, use the collection to decorate the wall.
There is probably no kitchen where the clock is not used in the interior. But your wall above the dining area requires special decor. Why not decorate it with a huge clock or, for example, a whole collection of rare wall clocks?
This decor option came to us not so long ago from foreign interiors and is already actively used in the design of hallways, children's rooms and kitchens. The writing board can be chalk or slate, cork, magnetic. It is convenient to quickly write down recipes, messages to loved ones and shopping lists.
A traditional idea for practical decor. Open shelves above the dining area are good for interior items, displaying your collection, for useful little things.
Not a fresh, but always relevant idea for those who watch a new interesting movie every family dinner.
We highlight the wall above the dining area with a color or textured material, a combination of different materials, bright wallpaper, an original print, a niche or a protruding part of the wall.
Photo panels, 3D vinyl stickers or a fragment of 3D photo wallpaper in the dining area will also highlight the wall above the table. Images that are too large, like giant tomatoes or pods, are best left for other rooms: the smaller the 3D fragment, the smaller the objects depicted on it should be.
Is it appropriate to use a mirror in the kitchen or dining room as an accent wall? Yes! Stylish and beautiful. And the mirror will add light and visually expand the boundaries of the room.
Editor's note:
- If your dining area is located in the middle of the dining room or kitchen, this does not mean that it cannot be beautifully decorated. Your tools are lamps, carpets and runners, pillows and other decor for chairs, napkins for plates, and so on.
The richer your lighting scenario, the more cozy the atmosphere of the dining area. Add a couple of wall sconces, pendant lights to illuminate your dining table, or a trendy floor lamp.
An idea that does not lose its relevance is the design of the loft dining area under a brick. Brickwork imitation options: decorative brick, 3D PVC panels, labor-intensive version with plaster, 3D brick wallpaper, decorative gypsum tiles, brick-cut drywall panels and flexible stone chips.
The decor of large letters (gypsum, wood, cork and others) still does not give up its positions - it is still used to decorate the walls. They lay out the family name, initials, quotes on the wall in letters, and also decorate the wall with a collection of one letter in different design options or a completely random set of letters. "Because it's beautiful."
Thematic kitchen decor - cutlery. It can be a collection of spoons, a panel with silhouettes of spoons and forks, or, for example, large-sized decorative cutlery.
Light, beautiful and stylish idea. Vintage things in the interior always look spectacular: plates, letters, empty frames, mirrors and photographs, watches and dishes, vintage boxes instead of shelves, and so on.
So that such a design does not evoke associations with mourning wreaths, use a minimum of decor on the rings - leave part of the circle empty, without flowers, branches, spruce paws. Or use decor that will evoke radically different thoughts and emotions: branches with berries or tangerines, for example. In the form of a circle, you can place your collections of plates, records and other items on the wall.
Spectacular and stylish decor option, a great alternative to TV. Less time for bad news, more time for family.
An idea for when the budget is limited. There are so many options for handmade wall decor that even a person without special talents can find an idea for himself with the possibility of implementation.
Ideas for a green wall above the dining table: stabilized moss and tillandsias, flowers in small hanging pots on vintage railings, a living phytowall for the entire accent wall, succulents in miniature cones.
Storing wine requires a certain temperature, which must be maintained on a constant basis. If you can’t afford a wine cabinet, you can get by with an original hanging structure for storing wine and glasses.
A beautiful idea with the right implementation. For example, choose your favorite photos, edit them to a single style, put them under glass and find beautiful frames, and correctly place them on the wall. Collection options: huge photos in black and white, bright color photos, a selection of images with smiles of household members, architectural landscapes and more.
Have your children grown up? Frame their first drawings and use them in the design of the wall - give positive emotions to yourself and your children.

best solutions according to SALON version
lamp. And if the place for the table is set aside against the wall, you will have to do something with it, because the dining area in the interior is always focal, which means that what is nearby will also be in focus.
In this post, we tell you how the wall in the kitchen near the table can be decorated and what solutions are popular with Russian and Western designers.
Design: GS Interiors
How to decorate the wall above the dining table: 12 great ideas
1. Hang a picture or poster
If the table is right next to the wall, choose one or two large paintings or several small ones to put them together in a single composition. Keep proportions: for example, one small picture on a wide surface will look lonely.
Design: Dina Salakhova
Design: Oleg Klodt
Design: Homenature
If the dining group is located at some distance from the wall, and the wall itself is large enough, choose a large-scale painting that will occupy half or three quarters of the surface: a large, catchy spot will highlight the dining area and make the interior visually more expensive.
Design: Bernidesign
Design: Marina Kutuzova
For large canvases and frescoes, it is important to choose the right lighting. To illuminate medium-sized paintings and posters, a suspension above the tabletop will be enough.
Design: Aiya Design
Design: Alena Chashkina studio
How to choose a painting? The plot is a matter of taste. But if the colors of the curtains, tablecloths, tiles on the floor and other shades from the furnishings are present in the picture, this will help to harmoniously combine the colors in space, to give the interior a finished look.
Design: Vadim Maltsev Design & Decor
Design: Ekaterina Rebrova, Elena Povorova
Design: Vyazaminova & Selvinski Architects
2. Set up the TV
With this solution, it is important to ensure that everyone can clearly see what is happening on the screen in front of them. If the table is slightly away from the wall, arrange chairs or armchairs so that no one is sitting with their back to the TV.
Design: Point Design
Design: ULIGHT
3. Paste with eye-catching wallpaper
Highlighting the wall near the dining area with accent, bright wallpaper is a classic solution for zoning. If the dining area is located in a niche or against a protruding wall, it is optimal to highlight only a structural element with wallpaper, and paint the remaining surface with paint or paste over with plain companion wallpaper.
Design: METAROOM
Design: Ira Nosova
Design: Irina Kireeva
Design: Julia Levitina
If the wall is large and has neither protrusions nor recesses, you can wallpaper the fragment near the table, reinforce its borders with moldings, and then paint the moldings in the prevailing shade from the wallpaper palette. Another option: step back a little from the floor and ceiling, and decorate the inside with wallpaper, by analogy with a large fresco.
Instead of wallpaper, you can use a photo panel, but only if the table is located a little further from the wall. If the dining table is close to the wall, it is better to opt for the option with accent wallpaper: large images need a good overview.
Design: Olga Busogrina
4. Complete with a mirror
A specific technique: not everyone is comfortable looking at themselves while eating. But if there are no problems with this, the mirror will create a beautiful portal with a table and lamp reflected in it. To make the portal even more spectacular, instead of a single suspension, pick up several at once, in a row - you get a real Looking Glass.
The trick will help expand the space and add light to the dining area, and the hostess will always be aware that everything is in order with makeup, hair and outfit.

Design: Anna Clark
Design: Berphin Interior
5.
Plan a shelving unitA good reception for dining areas in kitchen-living rooms with a table slightly away from the wall. Books, family albums, figurines or beautiful trinkets will fill the dining area with a special atmosphere and help you find topics for conversation if an unfamiliar company has gathered.
Design: Robbins Architecture
Design: Victoria Vlasova Interiors
Design: Well Done Interiors
If the table is close to the wall, it is better to do with a couple of shallow shelves, placing pictures, postcards, something decorative and small on them.
Design: Arina Volkova
If you need to think about how to decorate the wall above the table in the kitchen, you can replace the rack with a sideboard with transparent doors and beautiful dishes behind them.
Design: Architectural workshop of Nina Prudnikova
Design: Olga Betsa
6.
Replace several armchairs or chairs against the wall with a sofaYou can get by with an ordinary two- or three-seater sofa, but the most comfortable option is a sofa with a high upholstered back. Such models are conducive to protracted informal gatherings.
Design: StudioLAB
Design: Anastasia Semenova
Design: Special style
Design: Vera Tarlovskaya Interiors

7. Use additional light
One of the main rules of decorators is: the more varied the lighting scenarios, the more atmospheric the interior. Therefore, the suspension above the table can be supplemented with a pair of sconces on the wall, put a floor lamp or floor lamp nearby.
Design: Maria Gubina
Design: Tatyana Khorosheva, Dmitry Khoroshev
Design: Oksana Shirvanova
8.
Use brickThis decor method is relevant for houses and apartments with original brickwork, or if the wall was specially lined with expressive brick.
We do not recommend using brick-like tiles and wallpaper: it will look cheap. You can try to look for an option with decorative bricks. To enhance the brutality of brickwork, complement it with tracker lights.
Design: Vera Nikolaenko
9. Hanging decorative plates
As in the case of paintings, it is important to observe proportions in this technique: if the wall is large, then take larger plates, there should be a lot of them, and it is better to arrange them in symmetrical rows. If the wall is small, plates of different sizes will do. It is better to arrange them asymmetrically.
Spaces in rustic classic styles (Provence, country, rustic) can be well decorated with hand-painted plates with a bias in the desired national color. Rooms in modern styles - collectible or designer, like the iconic Fornasetti plates.
Design: Margarita Mustafina
Design: Julia Sukhanova
10. Include gypsum stucco molding in the interior
A good way to add stucco decoration to the wall at the dining table is to do it like in the kitchen-living room designed by Kirill Ponomarenko.
Design: Kirill Ponomarenko
11. Extend with slatted partition
If the kitchen area with the living area is only partially separated by a wall, you can extend it with a slatted partition and place a dining group next to it, as in the Emi Home studio project. The slatted partition itself looks decorative, plus this technique helps to separate and simultaneously combine two adjacent spaces.
Design: Emi Home
12. Complete with a mood board, organizer or magnetic board
In small apartments, the dining area is sometimes used as a workspace. In this case, it would be useful to have a surface on which you can make useful notes, hang reminders and reminders.
The table can also be used as a folding table: you can work on it in the assembled form and lay it out when a dinner party is planned.
How not to decorate the wall above the table in the kitchen: photo with anti-examples
Putting a picture on the countertop. Maybe this way the composition looks more expressive, but who at least once did not touch the legs or the edge of the tabletop when leaving the table? It is safer to still fix the picture on the wall.
Design: Tatyana Minina
Place a low chest of drawers with heavy items behind the dining group. Yes, and hang a mirror. One careless movement of the chair - and the objects behind will fly to the floor, and can lead to injury.
Design: Five Star Interiors
Design: Neil Salvia Building Designs
Place the dining group too close to the fireplace wall. As in the case of large paintings or panels, a portal with a flame or its imitation needs a good view. It is better to place the table and chairs at least a meter away from the wall, so that no one sits with their backs to the fireplace.
Design: Shahram

insured.
Design: Marina Dagenais
2. The more active the wall decor, the more minimalistic and simple the lamp above the table should be – and vice versa.
Design: Architectural studio QUADRUM
3. If the dining group is located a little further from the wall, it is important to consider the arrangement of the table and chairs so that those sitting with their backs to the wall do not accidentally touch the back of the chair or armchair with what will be behind: a picture, sideboard, shelving, cabinet with accessories.
