Dyson is a British manufacturer specializing in vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, fans, and hand and hair dryers. They offer a broad selection of stick/handheld vacuums but have also developed canister vacuums and more conventional uprights. Regardless of design, they all feature Dyson's proprietary cyclone technology, eliminating the need for a dirtbag.

The best Dyson vacuum we've tested is the Dyson V15 Detect. This cordless stick/handheld vacuum's headlining feature is its built-in dirt sensor, which counts and measures the size of particles sucked into the vacuum. It could be especially helpful if you suffer from allergies and want to know about the presence of fine particles in your home. Its surface detection system also enables it to automatically change its suction power depending on the surface that it's on. It also comes with a wide selection of attachments, including a soft-roller floorhead with a laser light to help you see small debris on bare surfaces. Its powerful 230AW motor is remarkably potent for a cordless model and allows for superb debris pickup on a range of surfaces. However, its strong suction force can also cause it to get stuck on shag carpeting or drag around some lighter rugs.

Its maximum runtime of over 70 minutes will be enough for cleaning most rooms, but this drops to a little over 10 minutes when used in its most powerful suction mode. If you're looking for a cordless vacuum with a larger dustbin and similar performance, you might want to consider the Dyson Outsize, which is also one of the best Dyson stick vacuums we've tested. However, it's important to note that its bulkier size makes it more of a hassle to maneuver.

If you're looking for the best cordless Dyson vacuum at a mid-range price point, look at the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. Compared to the higher-end Dyson V15 Detect, it has a slightly less powerful 150 AW suction motor, so it falls slightly behind in terms of deep cleaning performance. That said, it shares many of the same features at a more affordable price point, including the same built-in particle sensor, which lets you keep tabs on allergen levels within your home, and an automatic power adjustment system that bumps up its suction power when passing over large amounts of debris and on carpet. It also comes with a multi-surface floorhead as well as a secondary floorhead with a soft brushroll and an integrated laser light to help you see fine debris on hard floors. It's smaller and lighter than the V15, making it even easier to maneuver in cluttered areas.

Unfortunately, its dustbin is also on the smaller side and will require frequent emptying. If you want a mid-priced Dyson vacuum with a higher-capacity dustbin, you could also consider the Dyson V11. That said, it's less maneuverable than the V12 and can't adjust its power setting to match the quantity of debris on the ground, though it is capable of automatically increasing its suction power on carpet.

Generally speaking, Dyson vacuums are pretty expensive compared to peers from other manufacturers. Still, if you don't need the latest and greatest features found on newer models in the company's lineup, there are deals to be found. The Dyson V8 is the best example of this and happens to be the best cordless Dyson vacuum at a budget-friendly price that we've tested. Unlike the newer Dyson V12 Detect Slim or Dyson V15 Detect, it can't automatically adjust its suction power and lacks an onboard dirt sensor. However, it does a good job with the core fundamentals of a cordless vacuum. It's very easy to use, has a lightweight design, and delivers strong performance on most surfaces, though it isn't quite as potent as the pricier V12 or V15. There's no suction release gate to help improve maneuverability on carpets, but there are two different power modes to suit different surface types.

Unsurprisingly, battery performance lags behind newer models with larger-capacity batteries. You can only expect a maximum of about 40 minutes of runtime in its default power mode. Running it in its 'MAX' mode drains its battery in a little under 10 minutes, so you need to be quick when dealing with stubborn messes. In addition, build quality is a tad fragile, though it doesn't feel any more plasticky than other Dyson models.

If you prioritize portability above all else, the Dyson Omni-glide is among the best Dyson stick vacuums we've tested. It's important to note that, unlike a more traditional cordless model like the Dyson V8, it can't be used on carpets, as the twin soft rollers in its omni-directional floorhead don't provide any surface agitation on carpet fibers. Additionally, its tiny dirt compartment and short maximum battery life of about 30 minutes mean it's only meant for quick clean-ups. However, it weighs even less than highly-portable Dyson vacuums like the Dyson V12 Detect Slim, and its uniquely-designed floorhead allows you to pivot around obstacles like table legs and coat racks with minimal effort.

Its onboard HEPA filter does a great job of sealing in allergens like pet dander. While there's no miniature turbo brush for cleaning upholstered surfaces, it comes with a soft-bristle dusting brush for dealing with debris on delicate surfaces, as well as a crevice tool for cleaning tight spots.

If you aren't convinced by Dyson's cordless offerings, check out the Dyson Ball Animal 3. It isn't nearly as maneuverable as any model in Dyson's extensive cordless stick vacuum range and takes up more room when it isn't in use, but its corded design makes it a better fit for longer cleaning sessions. Its floorhead features a set of built-in plastic vanes that are remarkably effective in trapping long hair, preventing it from getting tangled in the floorhead and jamming the mechanism. The floorhead also has three levels of surface type adjustment, enabling you to adapt to different surfaces on the fly. The vacuum has a powerful suction motor, resulting in exceptional debris pickup on most surfaces. Also, it has a very long power cord, so you won't have to swap outlets when cleaning bigger areas, though you'll need to wind the power cord back manually, which can be a bit of a hassle and is something of a disappointment for a vacuum at this price.

Unfortunately, build quality isn't especially robust, as its mainly plastic construction creaks and flexes slightly while in use. While its redesigned floorhead does allow for superior maneuverability on carpeting compared to the older Dyson Ball Animal 2, it can still get stuck on shag-pile rugs. It's still a bulky, relatively heavy machine, even if its ball-shaped wheel does make it a little more maneuverable than most conventional uprights. It's also quite noisy and isn't the best option if you're looking for something well-suited to discrete cleaning.

Compared to other brands

Dyson vs Shark

As a general rule, cordless Dyson vacuums tend to come with a wider array of attachments and have more powerful suction motors than comparable Shark alternatives. However, most Shark models feel better built and have higher-capacity dustbins. Dyson vacuums are also usually easier to maintain than newer Shark models, as the former tend to use dual-roller floorheads with a non-removable primary brushroll that can be somewhat hard to clean.

Dyson vs Miele

Miele vacuums and Dyson vacuums tend to occupy a similar price point, but the two manufacturers specialize in different types of appliances. Miele is renowned for its range of premium canister vacuums, which are much better built and offer superior deep-cleaning capability when paired with a powered floorhead. Meanwhile, Dyson's range of V-series cordless vacuums are easier to set up and deploy and usually come with a broader array of attachments.

Dyson vs Samsung

Samsung's lineup of cordless Jet stick vacuums is directly comparable with Dyson's lineup of cordless V-series vacuums. Samsung's offerings are usually better built and offer unique optional features and accessories like a self-emptying docking station and a dedicated mopping floorhead. However, Dyson's newer models, like the Dyson V15 Detect and Dyson V12 Detect Slim, feature an automatic suction power adjustment system and a piezo sensor for counting and measuring ambient particle counts inside your home.

Dyson produces a decently large variety of vacuum cleaners that work well on different surfaces, though you can expect to pay a hefty premium for that performance and versatility. Most offerings in their lineup are maneuverable, easy to carry around, and come with a wide variety of brushes. Their build quality is usually quite plasticky, and user maintenance is a little finicky. In comparison, most Shark vacuums feel slightly better built but perform worse on carpeted surfaces. Dyson vacuums tend to be better and more consistent on all surface types than those from BISSELL.

Lineup

Dyson's product lineup isn't especially complicated, with a relatively small model range.

Conclusion

Dyson produces vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, fans, and hand and hair dryers. They offer a broad selection of stick/handheld vacuums. However, they have also developed canister vacuums and conventional uprights. They don't incur any recurring costs due to the implementation of Dyson's cyclonic technology across their lineup, eliminating the need for a dirtbag while also filtering out allergens. Generally, Dyson vacuums are lightweight, maneuverable, and versatile. That said, they usually have a long list of parts to regularly clean, plasticky build quality, and, on cordless models, somewhat limited runtime on high-power modes.

Best Dyson Vacuums 2023

Whether you live in a studio apartment or a spacious house, routine vacuuming can go a long way in keeping your floors—and your entire home—clean and comfortable. Dyson, a U.K.-based manufacturer known for its powerful, high-tech products, offers an array of cordless vacuums designed to do just that. The only problem? The sheer range of choices available can make the shopping process confusing.

After eight hours of nonstop testing, Dyson V15 Detect, the Dyson V8 Absolute, the Dyson Cyclone V10 . .. [+] Animal and the Dyson Outsize + Cordless emerged as the best vacuums from the brand.

ILLUSTRATION: FORBES / PHOTO: RETAILER

After extensive testing of six cordless models (which Dyson is known for) and one corded model, I determined the best overall Dyson vacuum is the Dyson V15 Detect, because of its consistent performance and unique tech features that make it much easier (and fun) to use. A less-expensive model, the Dyson V8 Absolute, earned the best value pick. Though it comes with fewer features than other Dyson models, it performed well in most of my tests, and was convenient to use on every surface. It’s also a solid pick for apartment dwellers and small-space living. (You can read our in-depth reviews of the Dyson V15 Detect and Dyson V8 Absolute for more details, too).

Compared to other vacuums on the market, Dysons in general are on the higher end of the price spectrum. But you get what you pay for: Reviewers consistently praise the brand for creating powerful and reliable products equipped with the latest technology to make cleaning more efficient.

After eight hours of testing out Dyson vacuums in my own home, I chose the following winners:

My Expertise

I have been writing about home and cleaning content for the last five years. My researched and reported cleaning guides have been published in Apartment Therapy, The Kitchn and MyDomaine. I’ve also reviewed numerous cleaning tools, from laundry stain removers and carpet cleaners to the highest-rated brooms and vacuums. For Forbes Vetted, I’ve extensively tested and reviewed several home category products, including toasters and blenders.

For this piece, I interviewed four experts to better understand what makes a vacuum great, and how to choose between the wide selection of Dyson models. I spoke with Carlos Dorado Cardenas, a new product innovation engineer and designer at Dyson, about the technology that sets Dyson vacuums apart, the differences between Dyson products and how to take care of the brand’s vacuums to improve their longevity. Additionally, I interviewed Christopher White, creator of the Vacuum Wars YouTube Channel, a vacuum reviews channel with more than 250,000 followers; Nigel Russco, a vacuum expert and engineer who’s been reviewing vacuums for eight years on Vacuum Cleaner Advisor; and last, Brett Magnuson, owner of Richard’s Vacuum Center in Florida, a family-run vacuum repair center that’s been in business since 1975.

How I Tested The Best Dyson Vacuums

I wanted to see how easily and consistently each Dyson model could clean up different debris on various types of flooring. To do this, I tested the vacuums on three surfaces: hardwood floor, a low-pile rug and a shaggy, high-pile rug. On these surfaces, I spilled debris of several sizes and textures, including sand, potting soil, jasmine rice and Cheerios; additionally, I used real cat hair and synthetic human hair to simulate pet and human shedding. To ensure consistency and measure precisely how much debris each model cleaned, I used a food scale to measure the residue before and after I vacuumed.

To test cleaning abilities for each vacuum, I sprinkled over multiple surfaces set volumes of ... [+] debris: sand, potting soil, jasmine rice and Cheerios, as well as real cat hair and synthetic human hair to simulate pet and human shedding.

ASHLEY ABRAMSON For Forbes

I wanted to know what it was like to use the vacuums in real-life scenarios, so after vacuuming each item on a given surface, I emptied the canister into a trash can and cleaned out any remnants with my hand or a paper towel. Doing so ensured the canister was totally empty when I started the next round of testing.

While testing the Dyson vacuums, I evaluated them based on the following criteria:

Dyson V15 Detect

Weight: 6.8 lbs | Style: Cordless | Run time: Up to 60 minutes | Bin volume: 0.2 gallon |  Warranty: 2 years | Accessories: 2 cleaning heads; hair screw tool; crevice tool; combination tool; mini soft dusting brush; stubborn dirt brush | Wall mount attachment: Yes

One of Dyson’s higher-end vacuum models, the V15 Detect boasts the latest technology to enhance the cleaning process, paired with the signature power and versatility users know and love. While there are several Dyson models with larger motors and more battery life, the V15 packs a ton of cleaning punch. At just under seven pounds, it’s lightweight enough to lug around the house and make light work of everyday messes, but it’s also powerful enough to tackle large spaces and thoroughly deep-clean piles of dirt.

The V15 had no problem sucking up all types of debris during my testing across fully carpeted surfaces, hard flooring and smaller area rugs—from clumps of cat hair to a bowl of Cheerios. Nothing got stuck in the roller while I vacuumed, as long as I used the fluffy roller on the hardwood floor and the hair-detangling roller on the rug and carpet. Its maneuverability, too, was impressive: Whether I cleaned along my baseboards or under my couch, the vacuum rolled and swiveled with ease. Additionally, like all Dyson cordless vacuums, the V15 has a detachable portion that turns into a stick vacuum, making it a lot easier to suck up rogue crumbs on upholstered surfaces like the couch, or beneath furniture items like my media console.

What really impressed me about the Dyson V15 was the Detect technology (which a number of Dyson vacuums I tested also had, but stood out to me the most in this model). The vacuum head with the fluffy roller for hard surfaces shines a green laser that illuminates tiny particles on your floor, so you can be sure you’re cleaning the entire mess. I found myself spending more time vacuuming with this V15, simply because I could see dust and other residue I would have otherwise missed.

The Dyson V15 is equipped with Detect technology that shines a green laser that illuminates tiny ... [+] particles, so you can be sure you’re cleaning the entire mess.

Ashley Abramson

Despite the extra time I spent vacuuming, the battery life stayed consistent and never dwindled. This is because the Detect technology also measures the size of dust particles and adjusts the suction power accordingly, helping conserve battery life as I vacuumed. “Each particle generates an electrical trace in the vacuum, which gets interpreted by an algorithm, and the vacuum either kicks up the suction or reduces it,” says Cardenas. “The purpose is to help the vacuum manage its energy usage better.”

The biggest downside of the Dyson Detect V15, in my opinion, is the steep price tag—at $750, it’s one of the most expensive models I tested, aside from the Outsize. All this power might not be necessary if, for example, you have a home with mostly carpeting, which doesn’t need a fluffy roller tool or the special Detect technology.

All this said, if you’re ready to make the investment, you get what you pay for with the V15. As mentioned, the vacuum performs extremely consistently, it’s versatile enough to play the role of an upright vacuum and stick vac and it comes with numerous cleaning accessories, making it worth every penny. You can also be sure it’ll last for years to come thanks to its sturdiness, plus its handy two-year warranty; if anything goes wrong, you can contact a Dyson Customer Care representative to troubleshoot or order a replacement part at no additional cost.

Dyson V8 Absolute

If budget is a priority, and you want an easy-maintenance vacuum that lasts for years to come, the Dyson V8 Absolute might just be the model for you. At $500, this machine is much more affordable than higher-end Dysons and works very reliably.

The V8 Absolute is one of the most basic Dyson models out there, so it comes with fewer fancy features. For example, it doesn’t have the Detect technology of the V15 and thus doesn’t regulate its power and battery usage based on particle size. That said, I found it to be consistent and easy to use in many use cases. It performed almost as well as the V15 Detect on all my tests, easily cleaning smaller debris (such as dust, dirt and pet hair) from surfaces without leaving a trace behind. It was consistently enjoyable to use, too: It weighs less than the V15 so it’s a bit easier to carry and push, with a nice swivel to reach tough spots.

The Dyson V8 is a lightweight, budget-friendly vacuum that performs well on hard surfaces as well as ... [+] carpets and rugs.

Ashley Abramson

The Dyson V8, which is a step above the Standard V8, also comes with two brush heads (one for hard surfaces and another for carpet and rugs) so you get the same versatility as other Dyson vacuums. I found that the vacuum did have a harder time sucking up larger piles of debris or big clumps of pet hair in my tests, so it’s ideal for quick, everyday jobs rather than deep cleaning. It has a smaller canister, too, so you have to empty it out more frequently. The shorter battery life also makes it a better option for smaller spaces above larger ones; if you’re vacuuming for a long time, be prepared to charge more often.

All in all, this vacuum is particularly great if you’re hoping for a compact machine that can effectively tackle small spills. This vacuum could be an especially good choice for city dwellers with smaller apartments, while it may not be powerful enough for folks with bigger homes.

Best Dyson Vacuum For Pet Owners

Powerful Suction With Pet Hair-Specific Attachments

Dyson

Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal

Weight: 5.71 lbs | Style: Cordless | Run time: 60 minutes | Bin volume: 0.2 gallon |  Warranty: None | Accessories: 1 cleaning head; hair screw tool; crevice tool; combination tool; mini soft dusting brush  | Wall mount attachment: Yes

Best for:

Skip if:

If you’re looking for a vacuum that specializes in cleaning pet hair, the Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal—which was designed with pet owners in mind—is a solid option. In my tests, the vacuum quickly and effectively removed clumps of fur and dander from low-pile and high-pile rugs, which other vacuums struggled with; as a bonus, it also worked great with longer strands of human hair.

I never had to fight with the strands when cleaning out the roller, thanks to Dyson’s hair detangling technology. The main brush head has 3D “vanes” designed to prevent hair from tightening around it as you vacuum, along with comb-like teeth that smooth out hairs and pull them into the canister. On smaller surfaces, like an upholstered chair or couch, the hair screw tool (a nozzle you have to attach to the end of the canister) powerfully sucks in fur clumps, and faster than the other Dyson vacuums I tried.

The Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal has a great swivel that easily gets into hard-to-reach corners and ... [+] crevices to effectively pick up pet hair.

Ashley Abramson

Another plus: This model weighs a lot less than some other vacuums from the brand, making it easy to push and carry around to tidy your pet’s favorite hangouts. It also has a great swivel, just like the other Dysons I tested, which makes it a cinch to get into hard-to-reach corners and crevices. The battery life was impressive—the motor and suction didn’t dwindle throughout my testing—and the canister is sufficiently large, which is helpful because pet hair takes up more space than dust and dirt.

While effective with pet hair, I found this model lacks the versatility of other Dyson vacuums I tried. The Cyclone V10 Animal only comes with the hair-detangling head and not the soft brush roller, so it’s not ideal for vacuuming wood or other hard floors. I’d consider it a great pick for someone who has shedding pets and lots of carpet, rugs and upholstery throughout the home.

Best Dyson Vacuum For Large Spaces

A High-Performing Vacuum With Extra Battery Life And Bin Capacity

Dyson

Dyson Outsize+

Weight: 7.98 lbs | Style: Cordless | Run time: 120 minutes | Bin volume: 0. 5 gallon |  Warranty: 2 year | Accessories: 2 cleaning heads; hair screw tool; crevice tool; combination tool; stubborn dirt brush; mini soft dusting brush; additional battery | Wall mount attachment: Yes

Best for:

Skip if:

The Dyson Outsize+ is a happy medium between a traditional cordless and a hefty corded model. Of all the Dyson cordless vacuums I tried, this one was the most powerful because of its motor size. It has a longer run time than the other vacuums, and it comes with an extra battery so you can swap out mid-chore (a unique feature among the vacuums I tested). The extra battery not only adds convenience; it helps the vacuum maintain suction power when you’re cleaning a big mess or a larger space.

The Outsize+ performed well and without issue on every test, as long as I used the appropriate head. It comes with a head for hard surfaces and one for rugs and carpets, making it similarly versatile as many of the other Dysons I tested. Like the V15 Detect, this one has battery-regulating technology. It also comes with the same laser illumination for smaller particles, making cleaning less arduous and honestly, quite fun.

The Dyson Outsize+ has an impressive run time of 120 minutes and a larger canister, allowing users ... [+] to clean multiple rooms in a single go.

Ashley Abramson

The only potential downside is that the Outsize+ is bulkier than other cordless Dysons. It has the largest canister of any Dyson I tried, which makes it easy to vacuum multiple rooms without stopping to empty them. However, while all the Dysons I tested had easy-to-open canisters, this one was also the easiest to empty—you just point it over the trash can, pull a lever and the debris falls out directly into the bin without a mess. I was pleasantly and especially surprised at how smooth the process was for this one because of the canister’s comparatively larger size.

Even though it’s big, this model is far less cumbersome and much more enjoyable to use than the corded one I tried (the Ball Animal 3—more on that below). If you live in a larger space and/or are in the market for a high-tech vacuum to stand in for other cleaning tools in your home, the Dyson Outsize+ is a worthwhile pick.

Other Products Tested

Power, ease of use and versatility are what I discovered make for the best Dyson products and ultimately deem them a worthwhile investment. In addition to the four machines listed above, I tested three other Dyson vacuums that didn’t make the cut in one or all of these regards.

Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra: While the corded Ball Animal 3 Extra takes charging a battery out of the equation and comes with several useful attachments to make cleaning more convenient and precise, it’s also very heavy and cumbersome to use. Plus, it’s quite large, which could make storage an issue if you live in a small space. The Outsize+ may be more expensive, but I preferred it because it has similar features to the Ball Animal 3 Extra without the extra weight, or the hassle of dealing with a cord.

Dyson Omni-Glide: For those with limited budget and storage, the Omni-Glide could be a good introduction to Dyson products. But in my testing, it paled in comparison to all the other models—including the V8, which is similar in price point. Designed for hard floors, it’s far less versatile to use on different surfaces; it also has a much smaller bin and shorter battery life than others, making it less effective on big messes. During my testing, it flopped around the floor rather than smoothly gliding like the other vacuums. I found it flimsy and less reliable than all the other models.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim: A lightweight take on the V15 Detect, the V12 Detect Slim has the laser-and particle-detecting technology that made vacuuming a fun chore with the other Dyson models I tested. But it performed less consistently than the full-sized model due to its shorter battery life, and at the near-$700 price point, the V15 seems like a wiser investment if your priorities are performance and versatility. If size is a top consideration over price, though, the lighter V12 Detect Slim could be a great option.

How To Pick A Dyson Vacuum

With all the options available—and the ever-changing technology involved—it can be tough to determine which Dyson vacuum is best for your home. Before buying a Dyson, think through how you plan to use the vacuum, and any priorities you might have for cleaning.

Ultimately, your vacuum decision should be driven by your home and lifestyle: the type of floor and messes you clean most often, for example. As a rule of thumb, the more you want out of a machine, the more you’ll pay. “If you want both power and convenience, then you should be willing to pay a little more for a nicer vacuum,” says White.

You can find myriad inexpensive vacuums at just about any big box retailer, but don’t expect a cheap and basic option to include the latest technology, or to last for years to come. And since versatility and performance are important in a vacuum—you want yours to work well in many areas of your home and on a variety of messes—a cheaper option may not be your best bet.

Here are some factors to keep in mind when shopping for a Dyson vacuum.

Types of Flooring In Your Home

Different vacuums work more effectively on different flooring. “If you’re dealing with a lot of carpet, you want a motorized brush roll or a spinning roll with rows of bristles that help dig into the carpet to pull up debris,” said Nigel Russco, a vacuum cleaner expert and engineer who has been reviewing vacuums since 2008. Soft brush rolls, on the other hand, are best for hardwood floors because they attract dust and debris and won’t scratch your floors.

A Dyson vacuum with more than one head is your best bet if you have multiple flooring types. Otherwise, choose one that has a head meant for the floor you’ll vacuum. You don’t necessarily need to splurge on the do-it-all option if you have primarily only one type of flooring in your home.

Size Of Your Home

Next, consider how much space you’ll vacuum. According to Russco, large spaces typically call for a larger canister (unless you’re OK with emptying it out regularly). Think, too, about battery life when you’re using a cordless model and vacuuming multiple rooms. In a large home, it may ultimately make sense to choose a corded vacuum so you won’t have to worry about the battery dying mid-clean—but if you go cordless, pick one that has a longer battery life or has extra batteries to swap out, like the Dyson Outsize.

Special Vacuuming Needs

If you have any special needs that affect your vacuuming routine, take those into consideration. For example, Russco recommends people with asthma or allergies choose a vacuum with HEPA filtration (currently, only the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute has a HEPA filter). According to Dyson, the sealed systems that every Dyson vacuum has can also prevent particles from spreading into the air when you vacuum. Extra technologies, like the laser on Detect models, can help ensure you thoroughly clean up potentially irritating dust particles. Older adults, or anyone who might struggle with a heavy vacuum, might prefer a lighter-weight model like the Dyson V8 rather than a larger machine that’s more difficult to push and carry.

Pets

Pet owners may have special needs from their vacuums, too. According to Cardenas, current Dyson models have hair detangling technology to prevent hair from getting caught in the brush roller. Some Dyson vacuums also come with specific attachments for pet hair. The hair screw tool, for instance, is great for picking up pet hair from small areas, like upholstered furniture or rugs.

Storage Space

If storage is at a premium in your home, you may prefer a more compact, lightweight vacuum for tackling everyday messes, and one you can mount onto the wall for storage. Or, it may make sense to choose a more powerful Dyson that can stand in for multiple cleaning machines. Ultimately, the space-versus-price debate is personal.

“You might spend more money for a vacuum with two different heads, but that might be valuable for someone who doesn’t want multiple vacuums taking up space in their home,” says Brett Magnuson, owner of Richard's Vacuum Center in Merritt Island, FL and creator of the Richard’s Vacuum Center YouTube Channel.

Warranty And Maintenance

Budget is a big consideration for any vacuum purchase, but keep in mind an inexpensive vacuum cleaner may cost you more over time. “It may be a great vacuum, but it may be difficult to repair or need replacement sooner than a higher-end model,” says Magnuson. “Choosing a Dyson model with a warranty may cost more money up front, but it'll ensure you have options when it comes to replacing parts or the entire vacuum.” Dyson sells replacement filters and batteries online, too, so even if you don’t have a warranty it’s easy to replace parts if needed.

What’s The Difference Between The Dyson Models?

Dyson vacuums differ in size, specs and the surfaces they can effectively clean. There are several tiers of products offered by the brand; some are do-it-all vacuums, while others are more specialized. According to Cardenas, the V8 and V10 are entry-level vacuums with fewer accessories. “As you move up the range, you get a bigger bin, longer battery life and more accessories,” he says. The Dyson V12 and V15 Detect come with additional technology to save battery life and more thoroughly clean fine particles; the Outsize is Dyson’s top cordless model, equipped with the same technology plus a larger bin and extra battery.

Do Dyson Vacuums Have HEPA Filters?

According to the brand, Dyson’s V15 Absolute model has HEPA filtration, and other Dyson vacuums feature whole-machine filtration, including a post-motor filter that captures 99. 97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. While HEPA is considered the gold standard for excellent filtration, and Dyson uses HEPA-grade filters, not all of its vacuums can be labeled as such. In 2017, the American Society for Testing & Materials released a new filtration standard specific to vacuum cleaners. For that reason, Dyson uses HEPA-grade filters but removes HEPA claims from most of its products.

How Long Does A Dyson Vacuum Last?

If you take care of your Dyson and follow instructions in the product manual, it should last you for years to come. Many Dyson vacuums come with a two-year warranty, during which the brand will replace parts or the entire vacuum if needed. To ensure your vacuum remains powerful and functioning at peak performance, Cardenas recommends rinsing the filter once a month by removing it and running it under cold water, then allowing it to fully dry. When the filter is clean, your vacuum’s suction will be stronger, which makes it easier to clean messes.

Are Dyson Vacuums Worth It?

Dyson vacuums can be an investment. Even the brand’s most basic models are more expensive than most other vacuums on the market. That said, if you’re looking for a well-made, reliable product and you’re ready to spend some money, a Dyson vacuum may be worthwhile. Beyond its up-front price, the Dyson’s warranty is one way to protect your investment for the first two years of use.
