Slippery floors and old carpets: 8 dangers that threaten the elderly at home and on the street

August 30, 2020 Life

Gathered tips to help keep parents and grandparents safe from injuries and accidents.

1. Faulty Electrical Appliances

An iron left on the ironing board or a stray socket can cause a fire. Another risk factor is faulty wiring: due to it, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 40% of fires in residential buildings occur.

Older people often lose their eyesight, their hearing leaves much to be desired, and their reaction speed is not the same as in their youth. They may not notice the beginning fire in time, and when they realize the danger, they are unlikely to be able to put out the flames on their own and get out of the apartment filled with smoke.

What to do

Do not delay repairing crackling sockets. It is better not to do this yourself (unless, of course, you are an electrician), but to entrust the work to professionals.

Hand over defective electrical appliances for repair, and mercilessly send those that cannot be repaired to a landfill. If you decide to upgrade your iron, electric heater or kettle, choose options that have protection against overheating or accidental activation. For example, an iron left unattended will not heat up, and the kettle simply cannot be turned on if there is no water in it.

2. Walking in unfamiliar places

And even in familiar places, because of poor eyesight and disorientation in space, an elderly person can get lost on the usual route from home to the store. People with dementia are at risk: their memory impairment is further complicated by behavioral changes. They seem to live in a world of memories and can easily go to their previous job, although they have been retired for several decades, or go in search of the house where they lived as a child.

What to do

Buy your grandma or grandpa a cell phone so they can quickly contact you in any unclear situation and explain how to use it. A fancy smartphone is not needed. Choose models with simple controls, convenient buttons and a large screen, and at the same time prepare a memo on how to use it all.

It happens that older people forget their address and especially the phone numbers of their relatives. In this case, put notes in the pockets of clothes and bags with the name of your grandmother or grandfather, their address and contacts where you can be contacted. If suddenly an elderly relative gets lost, the note will help passers-by to return him home.

In order not to worry about where your loved one is now, give him a smart watch that is designed specifically for older people. They measure the pulse and pressure, monitor the level of physical activity and remind in time to take the medicine. These watches also have a GPS tracker that monitors the movements of the owner and sends data about where he is now to the application on your smartphone. There are models that accept audio and even video calls, and you yourself choose who can call the device so that grandparents are not overwhelmed by spammers. And yes, this clock also shows the time.

3. Carpets

Any self-respecting grandmother's favorite interior detail is actually quite insidious. Small rugs are also dangerous, which can go under the foot at the most inopportune moment, and large products, especially if they have a long fringe or corners are bent.

Good old carpet can cause injury. An elderly person who can't see well and can't move easily may trip and fall. It’s good if there are no injuries, but falls often lead to fractures, and it can be difficult to just get up without help.

What to do

We don't suggest throwing away all the carpets - grandma definitely wouldn't approve of that. However, it is still worth getting rid of specimens in which the edges have completely blossomed. Or at least cut and glue dangling threads.

Attach the carpet around the perimeter to the floor using double-sided tape or silicone sealant - apply it in strips at 10-15 cm intervals to the wrong side of the product and allow to dry completely. Under small rugs in the hallway and in the kitchen, place an anti-slip mat. And do not forget about the wires - it is also better to remove them from the floor and attach them to the wall or hide them in cable channels.

4. Low light

De Visu / Shutterstock

When your eyesight is bad, the light from the usual five-light chandelier is not enough even during the day, not to mention the dark time of the day. And if you want to drink or go to the toilet at night, you will first need to get to the switch. It seems that there is nothing complicated in this, but moving around in the dark, awake and with poor coordination can turn into a couple of fresh bruises. Even in familiar surroundings it is easy to stumble on a corner, stumble and fall.

What to do

Replace the light bulbs in each room with brighter ones. Additional light sources will need to be installed in places where even during the day there are not enough natural rays. Usually this is a hallway, corridors, and in private houses there are also stairs. A floor lamp or table lamp will also be needed where an elderly person spends a lot of time - for example, in the kitchen, near the sofa, desk. There should be a small bedside table next to the bed: you can put a night light on it so as not to look for the switch in the dark, but also put the necessary medicines and glasses. Make sure it's easy for grandparents to turn on the night light without getting out of bed.

5. Uncomfortable bathroom

With age, coordination is no longer the same, and problems with the joints more and more often remind of themselves. A simple trip to the shower for the elderly turns into a test: you have to get into the bath, wash yourself, somehow get out of it and still not fall. Even going to the toilet becomes a problem, because it is also difficult to sit down and stand up without outside help and reliable support.

At the same time, elderly people resist attempts to help to the last: after all, the process is quite intimate. In a good way, the bathroom and toilet need to be upgraded even before the grandparents have problems with movement, so that they get used to the new environment.

What to do

Swapping a bath for a shower is not the best solution. The floor in the cabin is slippery, the sides are usually quite high, and there will still be splashes of water on the floor. In addition, a person who has used an ordinary bathroom all his life will find it difficult to adapt to washing in a cramped space.

To simplify the process, buy a special washing seat. It is attached to the bath and, depending on the model, can withstand weights up to 200 kilograms; there are options with a swivel mechanism so that you don’t have to storm the high side. Install handrails next to the toilet and on the wall above the bathtub so that you can stand up unaided.

6. Gas Stove

De Visu / Shutterstock

The most obvious danger is a gas leak. An elderly person may forget to turn off the stove or not keep track of the boiled soup, and he will run away from the pot and put out the fire. It’s also good if the culprit of the leak notices it in time or vigilant neighbors come running to the smell of gas.

Stoves with open flames are also dangerous: one has only to reach for a pan standing on the far burner, as the flame from the near one can spread to clothes. For this reason, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, by the way, recommends abandoning synthetic bathrobes. They quickly flare up and stick to the body - knocking down the fire or throwing off the burning clothes will not work right away, which means that the risk of burns increases significantly.

What to do

You can't do half measures here, you will have to change the old stove for a more modern one - better with two burners, it's safer. Choose models with a gas-control system. If the flame goes out, the gas supply will stop, so there will be no leakage. Electric ignition will not hurt either: the elderly will not have to fiddle with matches, so the risk of an accidental fire will be lower.

To be on the safe side, install a smart gas sensor: mount it on the kitchen ceiling at a distance of a couple of meters from the stove so that there are no false alarms. As soon as the sensor detects a leak, it will immediately give a light and sound signal and send an alert to your smartphone.

7. Abundance of furniture

Even walking in a room full of everything can be difficult, especially when every step is already difficult. When you fall, you can automatically grab the bookcase and bring down the furniture on yourself along with all the good standing on it or crash into the glass door of the cabinet. Sharp corners of tables and bedside tables are also dangerous - this is an additional risk of injury.

Finally, old chairs and stools, which seem to be still strong, only wobble a little, can also cause bruises and abrasions. If a person climbs onto such a chair to wipe the dust or get something from the mezzanine or the top shelf of the cabinet, the legs may not support the weight and part or break.

What to do

Arrange the furniture around the perimeter of the room so that the passage is free and you do not have to maneuver between the table, bookcase and bedside table. Glue soft protective pads on sharp corners. Tidy up your closets and move all the things that a person often uses from the upper shelves to about waist level so that you don’t have to reach or bend down.

It's time to get rid of wobbly stools and replace them with sturdy and stable furniture. By the way, you can buy a special chair with a step so that you do not have to raise your legs high. Finally, check that with the height of the bed: it should be such that the seated person can put his feet on the floor.

8. Slippery floor

Slipping on wet linoleum or tiles is a piece of cake. Keeping balance can be difficult even for young and healthy people, and for the elderly, who already find it difficult to move, and even more so to group in time when falling, this is an impossible task.

At best, a fall will result in a couple of bruises, but it can also lead to fractures or a concussion. And if you don’t have enough strength to get up, get to the phone and call a doctor, the situation becomes completely critical.

What to do

Check the faucets in the kitchen and bathroom: there should be no splashes on the floor after washing and washing the dishes. If the floor is still wet, replace the faucets with shorter ones. Lay rubber-based mats on the floor near the sink and sink to absorb moisture.

If the house has a staircase, it must also be provided with a non-slip coating. Tape the edges of the steps and thresholds with wide colored tape so that they can be seen even with poor eyesight. Finally, give your loved ones comfortable slippers with a heel that securely fixes the foot and rubber soles so that it does not slip on the floor.

Smartwatches make it easy to signal that help is urgently needed. Thanks to the fall sensor, they control the position of the body in space. If the owner falls, they will immediately send an alert to your smartphone and call the given number. An emergency call is easy to make using the SOS button - it is located right on the case. The watch can be worn at least around the clock: thanks to reliable protection against moisture, you do not have to remove it before washing dishes or going to the shower.

Mold removal

How to remove mold from carpets in 10 steps?

Mold is very harmful to carpets, it attacks the fibers deeply and is difficult to remove. If your carpet has been wet for several days, for example due to a flood, or if the area affected by mold is more than two square meters, you will need to resort to the help of specialists. Try to eliminate the causes of mold (like leaking pipes or broken windows) before you fight mold spots, otherwise the problem will return again and again.

  1. Wear protective clothing, goggles and a mask - attempting to remove mold will spread spores that may be hazardous to your health.

  2. Remember to ventilate - close the door when cleaning as mold spores can spread to other parts of the house, but open windows to allow fresh air to flow.

  3. If the carpets can be removed from the floor, take them outside. Leave them to dry in the sun for 48 hours.

  4. Take a stiff brush and sweep the mold from the top and bottom of the carpet. Walk with a broom on the floor where the carpet lies. Then vacuum all surfaces or use a steam cleaner.

  5. Spray carpet with anti-mold spray. Follow label instructions. You can also use the alternative means listed below. Make sure the anti-mold spray is deeply absorbed into the fibers and apply it on both sides of your carpet.

  6. Rub the carpet on both sides and leave to dry. Most mold sprays do not need to be rinsed off.

  7. Apply anti-mold product to the floor where the carpet is and let it dry.

  8. Reapply Anti-Mold Spray to all surfaces and let dry .

If you are cleaning carpet, turn on the light. If possible, lift the carpet 50 cm above the affected surface and remove the soaked layers, dry the carpet with a fan, dehumidifier or vacuum cleaner in the blow mode.

  2. Sandpaper the surface and apply antifungal agent carefully following the instructions for use. Leave the floor to dry, then repeat the procedure again.

  3. Allow surface to dry thoroughly. Apply wood stain in the most suitable color, fix if necessary.

Which antifungals can be used?

Soap and water will never fight mold alone. In addition to store-bought anti-mould, you can use the following alternatives:

Although bleach is used to control mold, it is only effective in stopping mold growth on non-porous materials such as tiles. The same goes for hydrogen peroxide. Both substances can be very caustic, so make sure they are suitable for your type of flooring. Mix bleach or hydrogen peroxide with water in a ratio of 1:8. Let the product absorb, then dry.

Vinegar does not work on all types of mold, although it does stop most molds from growing. Baking soda has the same effect, but in addition to cleansing, it also gets rid of unpleasant odors. Use undiluted vinegar and, for best results, leave it to soak for an hour before rinsing off. Mix baking soda and warm water, apply to affected area and let absorb, then sweep or vacuum excess.

Both essential oils have long been known for their antifungal and antimicrobial effects and are indispensable natural alternatives in the fight against mold. Add 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil or 10 drops of grapefruit seed oil to a glass of water and pour into a spray bottle. Then apply the product to the affected area, wipe off the excess with a cloth and leave to dry.
