Tan and gray living room ideas
Grey and Tan Living Room Inspiration
I’ve been on a bit of a Pinterest kick lately. Specifically, home décor stuff. All sorts of it.
One thing I’ve realized lately is that I’m totally in love with a grey color scheme. I’m sure this is probably because my house is basically tan everywhere you turn and I’m just over it and like to make things difficult for myself. I actually think that’s part of the reason why I wanted to try to sell our new couches a couple of months ago (which we never sold, by the way).
So I got talking about it a bit with Chelsey the other day, and then last night, she ended up sending me this pin…
And now, knowing that I could totally still go grey with my tan couches? I’m totally obsessed with the grey and tan color scheme.
An interior designer I definitely am NOT, so I would have never thought to put these two colors together?! But I really think that with a little updated paint, some new throw pillows, and maybe some new accessories, I could totally grab the look in our living room.
Here is some of my “Pin-spiration” for potential ideas…
I feel like that picture most closely resembles what we already have with the darker tan couches and dark coffee table. I’d want to go a little lighter with the grey paint color though.
I absolutely love the look ok this picture, but it’s really nothing like what we have…and it definitely doesn’t look too kid friendly.
I pinned this photo because it just looked a bit more like my house…pillows all over, animals…all it’s missing are about 1,894 toys.
Absolutely obsessed with these pillow cases. Love the lighter, muted tones of the grey paired with that tan.
Some potential color options…love having it all on the same palette. Makes it much more easy to envision.
Loved this for an idea of some various accessories to add in. I’d love to be able to add a contrasting accent chair someday, in a darker grey. But the practical side of me would much rather prefer a nice big, comfy recliner.
Technically, we really don’t need a coffee table. And I love ours for the sake that it lifts up and down and is SUPER convenient. But there’s something about this one that I just can’t leave alone. Plus, it’s made from an Ikea table, so I feel like it could probably be made fairly cheap?
So now I’d love to hear from you guys…
- How are you when it comes to interior designing? Do you have that “eye?”
- What are some of your favorite color palettes/combinations?
- Is your current living room what your “dream living room” would look like?

Grey And Beige Living Room
Designing with neutrals is one of my favorite color palettes. For me, the colors are calm and inviting. It is also the perfect backdrop for any pop color.
When it comes to working with a grey and beige color palette it is important to mix different materials, textures, patterns, and finishes in your design. This will add interest and movement to your design.
If you miss the mark here your room will look flat like something is missing and we don’t want that now do we?!
To give you ideas and inspiration on how you can pull off this style check out all the resources I’ve pulled together just for you.
This post is all about grey and beige living room design ideas to update your home.
How do you decorate a Grey And Beige Living Room?
The key to designing with neutrals is to use a variety of patterns and textures. This means mixing smooth and rough surfaces in your space to add interest and dimension. Pairing a velvet pillow with a fur pillow is an example of how to achieve this look.
While it is true that grey is down trending and at the end of its ten-year life cycle this modern neutral living room design is anything but boring.
In case you missed the memo, the new trendy color palette is greige, black, and white with pops of color. You may have noticed a lot of black and white in home decor lately. Now you know why.
Greige is a mix of grey and beige and is a fabulous update for the modern contemporary home. The feature living room mixes patterns and textures with pops of metallic to add interest.
How Much Does A Living Room Cost?
Before we get to the grey and beige living room design let’s discuss how much the average room design will cost you.
The typical living room makeover soup to nuts will cost you $8,000 on the lower side and $20,000 plus on the high side. That is not to say you can’t do it for less with lower-priced items but on average expect to spend at least $8000.
Then if you do spend less you’ll be pleasantly surprised. A while back I had done a series of “get the look” and “how much will this room cost” posts. Many readers found this to be helpful since they had no idea what to expect or where to get started.
If you are trying to figure out what your living room makeover will cost download the free budget calculator for guidance.
Free Budget Calculator Download
So for the neutral design living room above the estimated cost without the bookcase and poufs comes in at $6,000. Now if we add the bookcase and poufs the cost would be about $6,500.
Most of the products in this modern neutral living room design are from World Market. This retailer tends to be at a lower price point. The sofa shown is $900 which is definitely on the lower end.
In the image below you can see exactly where the 6K went in this design. I should also mention that the wallpaper accent wall would cost more than $34.99.
You would first have to calculate the number of rolls needed and then either install the peel and stick wallpaper yourself or hire an installer. Naturally hiring this out would add to the overall budget.

The pillows are in the product links below but they are not available for shipping so you’ll have to go to your local World Market to purchase those. They have great texture and pattern that will really add to the look and feel of your design.

1. Small Pendant

Adding accent lighting in a room is a great way to add ambiance and mood. This visual comfort pendant light would look great as a pair on either side of the sofa.

2. Feather Filled Brynn Sofa

This sofa is the perfect option for anyone just starting out or on a budget. The price point is fabulous and the rating is 4 stars. No need to worry about the light color because the outer upholstery is a polyester-nylon performance fabric.

3. Marble and Gold Accent Table
buy on world market
I personally have a thing for stylish side tables. Just saying!
This cute marble and gold table will look fabulous next to the sofa or the accent chair. The tabletop offers just the right amount of space to hold your cocktail or home decor.
Just remember it is marble so use a coaster, no harsh abrasives, and be sure to wipe spills immediately.
4. Watercolor Floral Peel and Stick Wallpaper
buy at amazon
Peel and Stick wallpaper is a great way to add style and personality to your home. When it comes to wallpaper it is a skill to calculate how much you need. If you are like me and need a calculator head here to Lowe’s or here to York wallcoverings.
Keep in mind that wallpaper is priced by the single roll but sold as a double roll. What that means is that if you need 3 single rolls you actually need to buy 2 double rolls (or 4 single rolls).
Don’t ask me why that is just the way it goes.
The floral wallpaper shown here has all the colors from this neutral design living room. There are shades of grey and beige so it will coordinate beautifully with this design concept.
Wallpaper is definitely making a comeback. Whether on an accent wall, bathroom, or cloffice it is a great way to add style and originality.
5. Sunpan Solterra Coffee Table
buy at amazon
This is one of my favorite coffee tables. I saw it for the first time at HPMKT and have to say this Sunpan beauty is stunning in person.
It is great for modern design like the feature image where mixed metals of silver and gold are throughout the room.
The coffee table is made of sealed concrete and can be used in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
6. Gold Art Deco Bar Cart

As I’ve mentioned before in my opinion every home needs a bar cabinet or bar cart. Even if you are not a drinker you can use it as a tea or coffee station as well.
This one is from World Market and has fabulous curves. I love the round shape and retro art deco vibe I love.
The features of this bar cart are mirrored glass shelves, a gold metal frame, and caster wheels. This makes the cart very mobile and it can be moved around as needed.
7. Wall Mirror
buy on BELLACOR
Mirrors are great to make your space feel larger and bring in light when opposite a window. The lines of this one are stunning.
This gold mirror has a unique original design and is surrounded by four lucite rods which add a touch of sophistication. Add this over the sofa as shown, or above your console table or dresser.
This beauty is sure to make a statement in your home.

Now let’s talk bookshelves. They are obviously perfect for holding all your books. If you are a reader like me then I’m sure you have a collection of books.
To be honest I started reading again hardcore when I turned 40 and six years later it is insane the number of books I have read. Like INSANE!!
If you are not a reader then bookshelves are perfect for displaying your favorite home decor, boxes, pictures, trinkets, and more.
This one is great because it is tall and has plenty of storage. The modern two-tone mix of white and gold really adds interest to an otherwise classic piece.
9. Faux Sheepskin Area Rug

Faux fur is the perfect way to layer in texture and interest in your home.
10. Grey Area Rug

12.
Grey Velvet Armchair with Brass Legsbuy on west elm
Loving the modern sexy lines of this stylish side chair.

This table has served us well during the holidays and I highly recommend adding her to your neutral modern living room.
14. Gold Pillar Candleholder
buy on world market
Candles are another must in every design in my opinion and this set is beautiful. I love the play on scale and form in these gold candleholders.
Display them as a trio or split them up in your room to create flow and repetition. Throwing out those principles of design since I just wrapped up teaching the Intro To Interior Design course for the semester. Ha!
15. Gold Buddha Head
buy on world market
The Buddha is literally my other new obsession. In Buddhism, Buddha means “awakened one,” and is a title for someone who is awake, and has attained nirvana and Buddhahood.
Buddha refers to one who has become awake through their own efforts and insight, without a teacher to point out the dharma.
Sounds amazing… NO?
I think so anyway. So for me, this Buddha’s head is a symbol of staying in the present moment and finding one’s authentic self. I know it sounds deep but really the practice of NOT going unconscious or zoning out is something I’m working on these days.
And that my friend is a wrap on this gray and beige living room.
One last thing, it is super important that you measure out your room before you make any purchases. I KNOW I sound like a broken record but it is so important to know what will fit in your space to avoid returns and disappointment.

Gray-brown living room
Calm gray-brown living room is a winning option both for connoisseurs of the classics and for followers of modern design trends. This is a respectable, stylish and noble combination that even a non-specialist can implement.
But still, beginners can make some mistakes and shortcomings, which can make the room look gloomy.
How to avoid mistakes and achieve balance - we will talk about this in this article.
GRAY BROWN LIVING ROOM: CHOOSE YOUR SHADES
Gray and brown are not boring colors at all, as you might think. Both are revealed in a diverse range of shades. And to decide on the shades, look at the actual dimensions and location of the living room.
For a small living room, choose a light or moderate taupe. Since dark tones visually compress the space, discard them when decorating a small room.
- See all about gray
- See all about brown
Here are some photos of small living rooms in taupe.
Spacious living rooms with deep and dark shades, on the contrary, will benefit. They "eat" the excess of free space, which will create a feeling of comfort and security.
Look at the deep gray-brown tones used in the design of spacious living rooms and combined kitchen-living rooms.
Which tones will dominate - gray or brown - depends on the illumination of the room. So, in the southern living room it is advisable to give priority to gray tones, in a dimly lit northern room - light brown shades.
Please note that the dark colors of the northern living room are contraindicated - there is already little sun there, and they "eat" not only space, but also light. So choose light or moderate, medium shades.
In a southern living room, it would be nice to combine gray with a mixed shade of brown containing a cool color (for example, olive brown). In the northern room, it is better to use the warmest shades of brown (for example, deep yellow-brown, red-yellow-brown, copper brown).
You will also be interested to know about the group of shades known under the general name "taupe" (taupe) - these are gray-brown tones, which are perceived by many as one independent color and are widely used by Western designers in interior design of living rooms. Taup received its verbal designation from the name of the animal - the mole, which just has a peculiar skin of a gray-brown hue.
Manufacturers of finishing materials, furniture, textiles and accessories produce many products under the name "taup". You can choose floor coverings, wallpapers, pieces of furniture, curtains and other interior trifles in this color.
HOW TO INTRODUCE A COMBINATION OF GRAY AND BROWN IN THE LIVING ROOM
Having roughly decided on the shades, draw up a tentative plan for each component of the interior: basic surfaces, furniture, lamps, household appliances, textiles, accessories.
1. BASIC SURFACES
For those who want to make all walls solid, choose a pale gray or light brown shade.
You can also cover one or two walls with grey-brown wallpaper with a traditional, geometric or floral pattern.
See examples of living room wallpapers in taupe.
Alternatively, wallpaper in two shades of grey, light and dark.
Gray wallpapers with silver and gold patterns also look good.
Consider an accent wall as well – either a dark gray wall against other light brown walls, or a chocolate one against three pale gray walls.
For finishing the floor, natural wood or its imitation (linoleum, laminate) will be optimal. In a modern interior, a light or moderate wood color coating is preferable, in a classic interior it is dark.
The ceiling in most cases should be made light - white or pale gray.
If you want to have a gray or brown stretch ceiling, give up numerous pieces of furniture and accessories in the same color, as the ceiling itself will already be an independent accent, and the largest and most noticeable.
2. FURNITURE
What kind of furniture to order in a gray-brown living room? If you gravitate towards the classics, make the walls light gray, and pick up furniture in traditional brown colors: wooden, with wooden inserts or leather.
When creating a modern interior, you should do the opposite: make the walls light brown, and buy gray furniture - laconic, without unnecessary embellishments.
- See description of interior styles
Who likes eclecticism, that is, a mixture of elements of different styles - try to find a colorful piece of furniture in the third active color. For example, red or burgundy, purple or lilac. It can be a chest of drawers or an armchair. One colored item will diversify the atmosphere in your living room, and certainly no one will think that it is boring.
3. LIGHTS
The darker the shades of gray and brown you choose, the more light sources you will need. Consider the location of spotlights, floor lamps, lamps, wall lights. Especially dark walls need additional lighting. To do this, hang a few sconces on such a wall.
4. HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES
Designers tend to hide household appliances or at least make them less noticeable against the general background. Even the TV, which is difficult to hide, is placed in some kind of artistic frame.
Some equipment is easier to disguise - for example, there are air conditioners in a gray or silver case.
5. TEXTILE
The taupe color combination is very popular in modern living room interiors, so you won't have a hard time finding a floor rug in this color combination. Although you can go an alternative route - choose a rug in a third accent color.
As for the curtains, for the southern living room, of course, you need to choose a fabric that is denser and darker, plain or with a gray-brown pattern.
In the northern living room there are enough light translucent curtains - pale gray or close to beige.
6. DECOR
Grey-brown living rooms welcome silver and gold accessories. Silver accessories will brighten up a southern living room that needs to be cooled down, while golden accessories will suit a northern room that needs additional warm accents.
Bring a touch of revitalization and freshness with indoor plants . Most often, one large plant is chosen and placed near the window. Although there are several more options for introducing living greenery into the interior.
Do you have no time or just do not want to take care of plants? Then add some sunny yellow, refreshing green or turquoise accessories (pillows, ottomans, vases, etc.) to your living room.
15 DESIGN IDEAS TO REMEMBER:
Our collection of design solutions will help you make your interior original and memorable for guests.
1. WOOD LOOK ACCENT WALL
Another way to liven up the environment and add natural warmth to it is to incorporate wood. For example, in the design of an accent wall behind a sofa or TV.
See examples of wood paneled walls.
2. ADVENTURE THEME DECOR
A map, a globe, a model airplane, a chest - if you love to travel, decorate your living room with one of these items.
3. WOODEN PARTITIONS
Not everyone is completely satisfied with the combined space in a studio apartment. A wooden partition will help to delimit the space into functional zones, at least conditionally.
4. MIRROR OVER THE SOFA
Don't know how to decorate the wall behind the sofa? Hang a mirror with or without a frame. Mirrors reflect light, which slightly expands the space at the visual level. This technique is especially relevant for small rooms.
5. FURNITURE IN ECOLOGICAL STYLE
A rough coffee table or a stump stool will appeal to those who share the values of modern ecological style.
6. CUSTOM BOOK RACK
Readers will love the idea of an irrational bookcase. In this case, we advise you to use the geometric pattern somewhere else - in the design of walls or curtains.
7. WOODEN FIREPLACE PORTAL
Don't have the budget to finish your fireplace portal with marble or onyx, or do you just want a modern interior that doesn't involve those classic bells and whistles? Decorate the fireplace with wood paneling - it will be in perfect harmony with the furniture and decor in brown.
8. WOODEN PANELED CEILING
To make a room with high ceilings a little lower and more comfortable, the same wood panels will help. See how aesthetically such a ceiling looks in the living room of a country house.
9. WIKE BASKET
Here is another variation on the theme of eco-style - wicker baskets. Place such a basket next to an armchair or sofa and adapt it to store useful and pleasant little things.
10. DECORATIVE PILLOWS WITH PORTRAIT IMAGES
Agree, it's nice to have a pillow with a portrait of an idol or a loved one. Some studio that specializes in photo printing on curtains and other textiles will help to realize this idea, or try to look for something similar in interior stores.
11. THE THEME OF HORSE
A horse is a noble, purposeful and enduring animal that evokes only pleasant associations. If you love horses, hang a picture of this animal in your living room.
12. THE THEME OF ELEPHANTS
An elephant, of course, will lose to a horse on a treadmill, but he has his own virtues - slowness, calmness, wisdom. And his image also evokes positive emotions. So a photograph of an elephant will not be superfluous, especially in the house of the owners who love traveling to hot countries.
13. FLORAL LIGHTS
There are a lot of plant-themed lamps in the assortment of online stores. At least one such lamp in the living room will not hurt. Imagine what beautiful reflections of light it will give in the evenings.
Who doesn't like leaves and curlicues - there are also such options. This floor lamp, as it were, repeats the shape of a tree trunk with branches emanating from it, but does not have ornate decorations.
14. DECORATIVE ANIMAL HEADS
Decorative animal heads find their way into Scandinavian living rooms. Do you like this idea too? Then hang this head in your room. Just look for a non-aggressive one - not a tiger or a bear with its mouth open as if in a roar, but something calmer.
15. MIRROR IN THE HEART SHAPE
Some people will find the idea banal, but others will be delighted. We advise you to listen more to the impulses of the soul than to the opinions of others. So feel free to order such a charming and feminine mirror.

In fact, this is not so at all: the whole secret lies in the correct selection of the right shades. Only then the living room in gray tones will turn into a fashionable and stylish room, comfortable for relaxing and meeting guests.
Pros and cons of gray
The popularity of this shade among designers is primarily due to its versatility and practicality. Also, gray color combines different details and other tones into a single whole. Other highlights include:
- the possibility of decorating the premises in any style;
- if the gray tone is the main one, then you can change the design of the room by simply changing the color of the textiles, which will radically transform the living room - while the costs will be minimal;
- gray color is practical: it does not fade and dirt is hardly noticeable on it;
- The dominance of gray in the living room promotes deep relaxation.
Design: Olga Chernenko
Basic rules for the use of gray
In order for the gray color to show its maximum advantages, certain rules must be observed when using it. This will help you create a truly cozy interior.
- When using this shade as a base color, choose only light shades for small spaces.
- In a monochromatic interior, dilute the background with pastel colors: beige, peach or cream.
- In a small living room, make the ceiling as light as possible, and the protruding walls and niches dark. This will visually increase the volume of the room.
- Feel free to use the monochrome design for large rooms. The union of gray with pearl, graphite or anthracite tones looks good.
- If the room is narrow and small, use warm shades: gray-green or natural ebony. Cold tones are suitable for spacious living rooms: ice, silver, steel.
- When buying furniture, keep in mind that it should not have exactly the same shade as the walls: otherwise, the products will simply be lost in the overall environment. Cabinets and sofas, armchairs, shelves will be clearly visible against the main background if their tone is lighter than the walls. But there is an exception that applies to excessively small rooms: it is allowed to put furniture in the same shades as the walls. Thus, the bulkiness of products will be reduced.
- The use of bright decorative details for the living room in gray tones is a must. These can be classic figurines, paintings in original frames, posters, green houseplants, landscape photos or posters (for the loft style).

Bright accent elements in the interior
The hall is a place where the family gathers, guests come here; so this room should attract attention and please everyone. Bright colors can help with this, enlivening the living room in gray tones. The role of accents can be played by accessories or furniture that have brown, yellow, red or green colors.
Blue is also suitable - it adds some severity and coldness to the interior, which suits business people who are used to getting relaxation in public places: clubs, restaurants. Feel free to use sofa cushions, vases, lamps, rugs as "revitalizing" elements. Sometimes they even glue wallpaper with bright inserts of small sizes. The main thing here is not to overdo it.
Wall decoration in gray tone
First you need to decide on the choice of shade, for which you need to evaluate the level of illumination of the room. In a fairly bright room, use darker shades and vice versa. When choosing a color for floor and ceiling finishing materials, apply the following rules:
- the flooring must be darker than the walls;
- ceiling - lighter than wallpaper;
- the floor is darker than the furniture.
Lightened ceiling gives more volume to the living room in gray tones. The same can be said about the walls. If their finishing material is light enough, then the room visually increases. There is a small nuance: in an overly elongated hall, decorate the end walls using dark shades - this will visually make the living room wide and short.
Don't make the mistake of making the floor too light. In this case, there is a feeling of lack of support. In turn, the dark ceiling, as it were, brings the walls closer, causing a feeling of tightness. The use of gray material for wall decoration is most appropriate in styles:
- hi-tech;
- minimalism;
- modern;
- abstract art.
When decorating a living room in gray tones, wallpaper is most often preferred. Manufacturers offer a fairly wide range of them: you can choose material with different textures and shades.
Gray and white combination
These are two similar monochrome colors, so together they look very harmonious. Gray and white shades are actively used to create modern, art deco interiors, less often classics. Many people replace pure white with its shades: creamy, dark milky, etc. Interesting combinations are also created if different textures are used - for example, wallpaper or plaster. All this helps to create a cozy and comfortable interior.

Gray and brown
Most designers associate this living room design with the rustic style common in the UK. Brown in alliance with gray soothes: the neighborhood of these tones seems elegant, soft. At the same time, this combination does not distract from the decor elements. Decorating a room with gray and brown can be done in several ways:
- natural wood furniture and gray wallpaper;
- dairy furniture plus brown-grey rug or carpet;
- brown wall surfaces and gray furniture (the latter look elegant, luxurious and expensive, convincing guests of the excellent taste of the owner of the living space).

Combination with pink
This combination looks fresh and gentle, it never irritates and promotes good relaxation. After all, it is because of him that the family spends time in the living room. If you use a bright shade of pink, you get an original accent, typical for styles such as hi-tech or loft.

Let's add green
In this case, the interior is natural. This is due to the fact that green is a natural color. Here you can use indoor plants with wide leaves or curtains, a rug of the same tones. It is important to remember that you do not need too much green. From shades choose olive, malachite, light green, etc.

Gray and red
A very interesting combination. But you need to remember that the red color is quite provocative and therefore there cannot be too much of it. In a gray living room, it is enough for curtains or chairs to have a red tint, plus a few decorating elements.

Dilute with blue
The combination of these tones gives the hall peace and tranquility. Blue color is characterized by saturation, depth. When choosing its shades, try to make the furniture lighter than the walls. Also, golden and silver tones can be considered a good addition, in which accessories are painted: for example, curtains or sofa cushions.

Gray with blue
This combination is used when the blue color seems oversaturated. The presence of blue gives airiness to the room, making it fresh and airy. Based on this combination, you can decorate the hall in a Mediterranean style. When using a combination, make the walls gray and the furniture blue (or vice versa).

A variety of shades in the living room: from dark to silver
Tones range from almost white to almost black. Such variability allows you to choose the most suitable design option in accordance with your taste. It is worth noting that the described tone is achromatic, that is, it does not contain other color pigments. Warm and rich color gives the hall nobility and some luxury. But cool tones, reminiscent of steel, are associated with a “factory” interior. It is necessary to work with such shades carefully, even in such pseudo-industrial styles as hi-tech or loft. Manufacturers of finishing materials know the above features and most often offer the following shades:
- smoke;
- ash;
- french grey, etc.
Of the cool tones, white lead and tin are the most popular.

Furniture in a gray living room
If you visit a furniture store, you can see that this color is used quite often. Usually it is upholstery that looks very elegant. The most popular are metallic shades, as well as concrete or wet asphalt. The latter gives upholstered furniture an expensive and luxurious look: natural leather can play the role of upholstery, in some cases - tapestry.
Keep not only sofas and armchairs in the colors described: a dark milky coffee table will look elegant in combination with milky chairs. That is, it is not at all necessary to buy exclusively all pieces of furniture in gray.
For example, the natural brown tone of wood looks interesting in combination with a concrete-colored leather sofa. Outside the recreation area, the described shade is appropriate for hanging shelves, cabinets. Gray color gives elegance and at the same time unloads the interior without cluttering it.

Gray textiles and additional elements
Many people forget that one of the main components of the interior is elements that are invisible at first sight. But it is they who often form the character of the design. If your furniture and surfaces are light, then buy decor details in darker colors. Curtains in the color of wet asphalt look exceptionally stylish. The silvery shades of the lamps will bring elegance to the interior, and the sofa cushions that draw attention to themselves and pull to lie down to rest.
Style directions
According to most designers, the described color is appropriate in modern interior design.
