35 Inspiring Bedroom Wallpaper Ideas

You spend a third of your life in bed, so it’s only appropriate that—in addition to a top-notch mattress and luxurious sheets, of course—your sleeping chambers are up to snuff aesthetically. An easy, not to mention on-trend, way to take your bedroom to the next level is with a chic wallpaper. Not only does the right wallcovering make your space distinctive, but it also has the magic ability—depending on your decorating goals—to make your room feel snug or spacious and to accentuate or diminish features.

The possibilities are endless, as the homes shown in ELLE DECOR prove. You can swath your sleeping space floor-to-ceiling with a stylish wallcovering, as Lorenzo Castillo did in a Parisian pied-à-terre, or apply it to a single wall as an extension of the space surrounding your headboard, as Nickey Kehoe did in one California cool home. And with an endless variety of stick-and-peel options available, adding color and pattern to your bedroom walls has never been easier.

We’ve scoured our archive to unearth some of our favorite bedroom wallpaper ideas, whether you’re interested in keeping things classic, going a bit wild, or trying something new. One thing’s for sure: with the right pattern, the place where you catch some z’s will never catch a case of the blahs.

1

Mixed Patterns

Frank Frances

In a cozy guest room in her upstate New York home, ELLE DECOR A-List interior designer Sheila Bridges applied layer upon layer of colorful patterns. The classic green wallcovering by Adelphi Paper Hangings picks up the mint hues in the vintage kantha quilt and the upholstered headboard.

2

Matchy-Matchy (In a Good Way!)

Ricardo Labougle

Interior designer Amaro Sánchez de Moya went wild for patterns in his maximalist, but clasically informed, pied-à-terre in Seville, Spain—and you can too. Here, Sánchez de Moya applied the same leafy trellis pattern by Zuber on the furniture, cushions, and walls.

3

Delicate Florals

Serena Eller Vainicher

Wallpaper is uncommon in Italy, but the owners of a Rome apartment (perched perfectly above the Colosseum) asked that design duo Alivisi Kirimoto use it throughout their home. The chosen floral wallcovering, designed by Romo, appears in three different versions throughout the home, including this pale variation in the bedroom. The delicate blooms converse with the trees and plants just outside the window.

4

Nature-Inspired Textures

Douglas Friedman

ELLE DECOR A-Lister Martyn Lawrence Bullard may be known for his opulent pattern play, but in this Hawaiian getaway, he opted to let the lush tropical surroundings do the heavy lifting. In lieu of a look-at-me wallcovering, he selected an organic, bark textured material by Caba Company to clad the room.

5

All-Over Pattern

Isabel Parra

If you love a pattern, why just apply it to the walls? Designer Remy Renzullo took a page from the book of decorating greats of yore (think Billy Baldwin and Dorothy Draper) and covered this Hamptons bedroom entirely in the same Pierre Frey fabric. After all, there’s never too much of a good thing.

6

Mural-Like Motifs

Pascal Chevallier

Mathilde Favier, an impossibly chic executive at Dior, brought the catwalk to her Paris bedroom, which features a purple carpet design featured on the fashion house’s runway. And though the wallspace above her bed isn’t technically wallpaper (it’s actually a wall mural by Rosie Mennem), we love how the pretty cherry blossom motif ties the entire room together.

7

Luxurious Damask

Thomas Loof

Fabric is a fabulous alternative to wallpaper. We adore this de Gournay damask, in a gleaming deep salmon colorway, that designer Summer Thornton selected for a bold Chicago prewar apartment.

8

Arts and Crafts–Inspired Wallpaper

Amy Neunsinger

Star Los Angeles chef Suzanne Goin tapped ELLE DECOR A-List firm Nickey Kehoe to create a calming retreat away from her hectic restaurant kitchens. In the bedroom, the design duo selected an Arts and Crafts movement–inspired wallcovering from Lewis & Wood. The pattern lends the feeling of being nestled in an enchanted forest.

9

Pretty Carnations

Ryann Ford

All-over pattern doesn’t verge into heavy territory, thanks to a white ground and a sweet floral print. Architect Paul Lamb worked with a Texas client to create adorable reading (and nap) nooks throughout this Austin home. Here, the pattern on the walls and curtains is from Alex Conroy Textiles.

10

Retro Florals

Ryann Ford

We couldn’t help but showcase one more napping spot in the same home designed by Architect Paul Lamb. A bold, retro floral called Hello Yarrow by Abigail Borg feels neutral due to oatmeal upholstery and off-white walls.

11

Dense Botanicals

Alanna Hale

Ferns and fronds and dandelions, oh my! Designer Jessica Davis extended the headboard of this bed using a leafy green wallpaper by Marthe Armitage in a bedroom located in a restored 1970s home.

14

Candy Stripes

Michael Sinclair

British home brand House of Hackney is known for its wild, maximalist patterns, but founders Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle chose a classic, striped wallpaper for the main bedroom in their London home. The vertical orientation lends additional height to the room’s historic proportion.

15

Lace-Like Patterns

Stephan Julliard

In his French beach home, designer Jean-Louis Deniot wanted to channel the easy-breezy vibe of his seaside setting. To play up the bohemian woven canopy (a custom Deniot design), he selected a complementary wallcovering from Thibaut.

16

Jubilant Pink Cranes

Isabel Parra

If you really want to make a statement, think pink...and maximalist! Fledgeling interior design studio Perifio decorated a guest room in their Hudson, New York, retreat with a riotous pattern of dancing cranes, courtesy of Milton & King.

17

Wild Things Wallcovering

Marili Forastieri

Designer Rodney Lawrence literally took a page out of Maurice Sendak’s book in designing this adorable children’s bedroom in a Long Island, New York, home. The wall features a custom mural with a scene from the beloved children’s book Where the Wild Things Are.

18

Painterly Paper

Shade Degges

This Malibu, California, house designed by Standard Architecture may feature muscular modern proportions and materials, but designer Martha Mulholland was sure to soften things up with lush moments of color and pattern. Here in the bedroom, she selected an opulent floral wallpaper by Lizzo.

19

Hot House Print

Carmel Brantley

Caroline Rafferty’s midcentury modern Palm Beach home is surrounded by hothouse plants. So why not bring those inside? A 4Space palm-print wallpaper turns the space into a lush oasis.

20

Kid-Friendly Mural

Nicole Franzen

21

Gray and Graphic

Trevor Tondro

For his California bedroom (a onetime abode of Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek), architect Luis Fernandez riffed on the pattern of the geometric rug by selecting a Pierre Frey wallpaper in a mini, similar version of the print.

22

Delicate Vines

Chris Mottalini

Design firm Hendricks Churchill wanted to bring a Connecticut Greek Revival back to its roots and what better way than with a vintage-inspired wallpaper? Here in the main bedroom, the designers chose a Lake August pattern covered in budding vines.

23

Tiers of Turquoise

Ricardo Labougle

Why settle on just one wallpaper when you could have several? The trick, as seen in this Paris home designed by Lorenzo Castillo, is selecting patterns of a similar scale and color palette.

24

Blurred Lines

Simon Upton

If you’re looking to bring some visual interest to your bedroom without going over the top, consider a subtle stripe. In this Pittsburgh Tudor Revival, designer Janine Carendi MacMurray selected a mottled striped wallpaper from Thibaut. Coupled with the crisp white trim, the room feels sunny year-round.

25

Graphic—and Cartographic

Thomas Loof

Unleash you kid’s inner explorer with a fun (and educational) wallcovering. Here in an East Hampton, New York, bunk room designed by Celerie Kemble, the walls are covered in a map-patterned wallpaper by Ralph Lauren Home.

26

Romantic Layers

Alexei Hay

Though it’s in Connecticut, this bedroom designed by Ariel Ashe of the design firm Ashe Leandro, could have been plucked straight from a cottage across the pond. The key to achieving the look? The sweet miniature floral pattern on the walls and on the headboard. Layered antiques create the picture-perfect spot to catch some z’s.

27

Dainty Branches

Mark Roper

This bedroom, in a London home designed by Thomas Hamel, manages to stay serene amid layer upon layer of pattern. The wallcovering in a custom Fromental fabric makes the bed feel like it’s in a garden.

28

Black-and-White Toile

Miguel Flores-Vianna

This room is a masterclass in pattern mixing. And its owner, Nathalie Farman-Farma would know: Her London textile studio Décors Barbares is a favorite of in-the-know designers. Here in her bedroom she balances rich tones against a black-and-white wallcovering designed by Madeleine Castaing for Brunschwig & Fils.

29

Regal Regency

Ricardo Labougle

This bedroom in a grand 18th-century London home received a lavish (and historically accurate!) update from designers Laura Sartori Rimini and Roberto Peregalli of Studio Peregalli. Here in the monochromatic bedroom, the designers heaped on textiles of the same light plum hue—including the floral and chain-link patterns on the walls.

30

Americana Stripes

Brooke Schwab

What could be more American than red, white, and blue? Stripes, of course! In a boys’ bedroom in California, designer Elizabeth Cooper swathed the walls in a blue stripe from Meg Braff Design.

31

Tropical Yet Neutral

James Merrell

If you fear that all-over palm leaf wallpaper is too outré, try one that is in a neutral pattern. 105 photos and tips for choosing beautiful ideas

Sooner or later, we all think about changes in life: about changing jobs, places of residence, or maybe not about such global ones, for example, about repairs. Renovation is a serious step, even if you decide to freshen up only one room. This is not only the investment and effort, the time spent, but also the complexity of the choice.

In order not to be disappointed by the renovation results, you need to pay attention to the size of the room and its functionality. There is a huge variety of finishing materials, but wallpaper has rightfully taken a leading position for many years.

Table of contents of the article:

Modern materials

Strange as it may seem, fabric is considered the oldest ancestor of modern wallpaper; it was used to decorate the walls in the houses of the nobility. But progress does not stand still, over time, the fabric coating was replaced with a more affordable paper one. Along with traditional paper materials, many synthetic analogues are used.

Of course, it is not so easy to decide among the many materials offered:

The leader among other options are undoubtedly paper wallpapers, they are the most environmentally friendly, although not so practical.

A more practical choice would be vinyl wallpaper. This is the same paper, but applied to a PVC base, which makes such a material more durable. They can be cleaned using a damp cloth.

Perhaps the most suitable solution for a bathroom or kitchen. You can find vinyl wallpapers in hardware stores that look like fabric, they are known as silkscreens.

Non-woven wallpaper is considered to be the most progressive and rather expensive coating. Fleece is a cellulose-based non-woven material, you can even say that it is an improved paper counterpart. Several layers of cellulose soldered together make a very durable, moisture-resistant and, importantly for living quarters, breathable fabric.

These wallpapers are made both smooth and embossed, they are often used for painting. Coatings are also produced not entirely from non-woven fabric, but only on its basis with various surfaces, both paper, vinyl and even fabric. Their price is much cheaper.

Do-it-yourself repair

If you decide to wallpaper the room without resorting to the help of specialists, then you just need to follow the recommendations of the leading masters.

The first step is to prepare the walls. Old wallpaper needs to be removed. Note that different materials have features when they are removed. Vinyl and non-woven are removed without difficulty, just pull the bottom of the canvas, but paper ones are better to pre-wet or steam with a steam generator.

If, after removing the old coating, you find irregularities or cracks, it is best to plaster the walls. The final step before pasting the walls with new wallpaper will be a primer.

The next thing to consider is that the adhesive should only be used for the selected type of wallpaper, otherwise it may simply peel off. Glue consumption depends on how much wallpaper you need per room.

This is truly an unpredictable occupation of repair, who would have thought that you would need not only an aesthetic taste and knowledge of the basics of interior design, but also a trite knowledge of mathematics! After all, in order to avoid unnecessary spending on materials that are not needed or remain superfluous, you need to determine their exact amount.

First, you need to decide on the parameters of the wallpaper roll: the width is usually standard 50 cm or 1 m, but the length (number per roll) can vary from 7 m to 18 m, these data are presented on the label.

Second, measure the room. Height from ceiling to floor and the perimeter of the walls to be glued.

And finally, do some simple calculations. The perimeter of the room must be multiplied by the height of the walls, we get the area to cover without deducting window and door openings. Now divide the resulting product by the area of the roll (length times width) and get the required number of rolls. If you don’t really want to do this kind of calculation, there are ready-made tables or online calculators.

I would like to note one more important point, such a rough calculation is suitable for plain wallpaper or with an asymmetrical pattern, but if the pattern is selected joint to joint, add 20% to your calculations.

Now you know how to calculate the wallpaper for the room and what material to give preference to, the most interesting and, perhaps, the most difficult thing is to decide on the design.

Features of choosing wallpaper

Before deciding which wallpaper to choose for a room, you must first take into account the functionality and style in which the room as a whole is made. The size of the room is also of great importance, because with the help of wallpaper you can visually correct errors in layout and lighting.

It is best to cover small areas with wallpaper in light colors without saturated and catchy patterns, otherwise bright walls will visually reduce the already modest area. Low ceilings will visually lift the vertical pattern.

Add warm cheerful colors to a cold and gloomy room. Spacious bright rooms sometimes lack comfort, and this situation can be corrected by the design of wallpaper with floral embossing.

Large rooms

In general, large and spacious rooms are a great option for a flight of creative imagination. The most ideal place to experiment with color and texture. You can safely combine bright colors with a large pattern and plain canvases, varying the combinations.

Most often, the largest room in an apartment is the hall. But it also happens that the most spacious room is the only one and includes a living room, a bedroom, and an office.

In this case, such a design technique as zoning will come to the rescue. You can highlight the recreation area, marking it with a bright print against the background of plain walls in the same color scheme. You can also note the intricate texture of the niches and columns in the room.

Another interesting technique used for spacious areas is wallpaper with a 3D effect. These are canvases with a printed three-dimensional pattern, and interspersed with reflective particles create a three-dimensional image.

Such wallpapers are used for space zoning. The paintings look realistic and creative, but due to the significant cost, they are not available to everyone.

Murals in modern interiors

If 3D wallpapers are best suited for spacious rooms (it is difficult to achieve a three-dimensional effect in small rooms), then classic murals are a universal solution. Moreover, the variety of existing options is amazing and it is quite easy to get confused when choosing themes for photo wallpapers.

Most popular options:

Wall mural really will be a win-win solution in the interior of a room with wallpaper, but a couple of tips are worth taking into service. First, do not choose too bright a palette of colors and too dynamic image, it can soon get boring. And, secondly, do not clutter up the wall with wallpaper of this kind with furniture.

Wallpaper for the bedroom

The bedroom is the most intimate and inaccessible room for outsiders. When choosing wallpaper for the bedroom, we strive to follow the principle of peace and tranquility, because where else if not in this room you want to relax and unwind. But at the same time, I don’t want to fall into the trap of clichés and clichés, but to make the design cozy and unique.

The main principle of choosing wallpaper for the bedroom is environmental friendliness. When choosing a color scheme, it is best to focus on soothing tones, and if you want to add a twist, then zoning with a bright print on one of the walls or unusual textiles in contrasting tones to the wallpaper would be a great solution.

Wallpaper for the nursery

The main principle of choosing wall coverings for the nursery is, of course, environmental friendliness and safety! As for the design, as we can see in the photo of the wallpaper in the children's room, the flight of fantasy has no limits. And yet, no matter how bright and festive atmosphere you would like to create for your baby, remember that in this room he will not only play and have fun, but also relax and do his homework.

You can visually divide the room with the help of the above photo wallpapers, your favorite cartoon characters will be wonderful companions in the play area of the room. And leave the part of the room reserved for relaxation in soothing colors with discreet patterns.

The palette, of course, should be chosen based on the gender of the child and his preferences, but too flashy shades in large quantities should be avoided.

Creating the design of the room on your own or entrusting your choice to the designer, do not forget that the repair in the room is a responsible event that can both please with novelty and freshness, and upset with deceived expectations.

Consult with all the inhabitants of the renovated room, come to a common decision and let the new decoration bring only positive emotions.

71 Photos, Interiors for 2021 and Combination

Combining wallpaper in the interior of the bedroom does not end with pasting one view behind the bed, the second on other walls. Everything is more complicated and we have prepared a photo of wallpaper combinations in the bedroom with an analysis from the designer.

Which wallpaper to choose for the bedroom

In general, wallpaper is better suited and more often used in classic bedroom interiors. Do not be surprised that most of the photos will be from the classics. However, in modern styles there are situations when no other material will give the desired effect.

Classic bedroom interior wallpaper

Wallpaper combination theory will come later, while we just provide photos and comment on them, figuring out why the bedroom interior looks stylish or not.

The standard and best version of the classic wallpaper for the bedroom, this is a wallpaper with a colored background and pattern without strong contrast . It can be either a pattern that differs from the main color by 1-2 tones, or a silver or gold pattern.

Wall-paper with a clear pattern is accent. They can not cover the whole room. In the standard, this is 1 wall, a maximum of two. Let's see the photo.

Classic wallpaper with a large pattern and especially with gold and silver colors at the base looks expensive. The rest of the bedroom decor must match, otherwise there will be dissonance and an inharmonious appearance. Photos when this rule is not respected:

2nd type of classic wallpaper - wallpaper with a contrasting pattern. It would seem, whether there is a big difference in the contrasting pattern or not, does it make sense to single them out in a separate form. There is. They are perceived in a completely different way, the design of the bedroom around such wallpapers is built differently.

There is a huge difference between classic wallpaper with a contrasting pattern and a non-contrasting pattern.

Wallpaper with a contrasting pattern will load the interior of the bedroom with details. If you do not take this into account, and add more details with bedding, curtains and other items, you will get porridge. Such wallpapers should almost never be used on more than one wall.

Another type of wallpaper for classic styles is paintable wallpaper. It makes little sense to bring their photos, because. it is unrealistic to distinguish a simply painted wall from a wall with painted wallpaper from a photo. In reality, the texture is visible, in the photo - no.

Modern bedroom wallpaper

In most modern styles, wallpaper is rarely used. For wall decoration, paint, decorative plaster, 3d panels, etc. are used. But when you need a pattern, geometric shapes or something like that, wallpapers still help out.

An interesting borrowing from classic styles - black wallpaper with non-contrasting or silver patterns. It is in black that they are used in modern styles when you need to add a little luxury.

Geometric shapes and broken patterns work well with some modern bedroom interiors, and you can only get them with wallpaper. There is also wallpaper with stripes and fine textures.

Neutral wallpaper without a pronounced texture is also an interesting option. Especially considering that the basis of all modern styles is minimalism.

Gradients and photo wallpapers are another type of wallpaper that fits well into modern bedrooms. But be careful with photo wallpapers - this is a very risky move. This option may look stylish, or maybe collective farm, you need to feel the edge subtly. If you know how to work with graphic editors, you can photoshop the wallpaper in your bedroom to figure out how it will look.

Combining wallpaper in the bedroom

Now it's rare for anyone to glue one type of wallpaper on all the walls in the bedroom. In most cases, these are two types of wallpapers, where one is accent and the second is background. Accents are either wallpaper with a clear pattern, or darker, or more saturated in color.

Combined wallpapers

Manufacturers take into account modern trends and have long been releasing wallpaper collections that are already designed to be combined within one room. This is a good and least risky option, it is difficult to make a mistake using it.

Usually in such collections the main and accent wallpapers are clearly distinguished, but sometimes they differ only in color. It is assumed that more saturated will become accent.

Sometimes collections consist of different colors of the same saturation. This important parameter allows you to choose any two colors for the bedroom and combine them without worrying about compatibility. Many underestimate the parameters of brightness and color saturation, namely, they usually determine how well the wallpaper blends together. Read about the color of the walls in the bedroom.

The fact that wallpapers are combined within the same collection does not mean that you will not screw up with their arrangement. More on this later.

Combining different wallpapers

When you want to combine wallpapers from different collections, you need to think about two things:

  1. Are wallpapers compatible with each other.
  2. On which wall of the bedroom to paste which wallpaper.

To answer the first question, check out Interior Color Matching and Interior Wallpaper Matching.

The article about the combination of colors is strictly obligatory for reading. Otherwise, it will be like this:

There are nuances on the second point. The standard for the bedroom is the placement of accent wallpaper behind the bed. This is often justified, but not always.

If the wall behind the bed is small due to the rectangular shape of the bedroom, then making it accent is not a good idea. We have already written about the design of a small bedroom. This also includes the situation when the wall behind the bed is overloaded with details: lamps, paintings, a high colorful headboard, etc. Below are examples of how NOT to combine wallpaper in the bedroom.

And now a similar wallpaper, but when the wall is not overloaded with details, the difference is immediately visible.

The second option is to make the least loaded wall an accent wall. Using this combination methodology, the wallpaper usually ends up behind the bed - in most bedrooms, this wall is the least loaded. After all, on the perpendicular walls of the bedroom in 99 cases out of 100 there is a door on one side and a window on the other.

The third option is the wall behind the TV. The problem here is with the competition for attention between the TV and the wall. In general, not the best option for combining wallpapers. If your bedroom is not suitable for the first two for the reasons stated, perhaps combining wallpaper in the bedroom should be abandoned altogether. Or unload the wall behind the bed.

Wallpaper can also be combined on the same wall, for example by dividing it horizontally or making frames:

Wallpaper with wood and brick imitation

Recently, loft, Scandinavian style and minimalism have become especially popular design styles. And demand, as you know, creates supply. As a result, in 2021, a lot of wallpapers with imitation of natural materials appeared on the market. And a large number of bedroom interiors have already suffered from such wallpaper.

Wallpaper with wood look, brick look and even concrete look. There are even wallpapers with imitation of concrete slabs, with gaps between them and painted rivets. At first glance, they look cool, but let's figure it out.

Most of the listed materials have long been successfully imitated in design. Natural wood is imitated by laminate (which, by the way, can also be glued to the wall behind the bed in the bedroom). A real brick is imitated by a decorative brick. Concrete and much more (almost everything) is imitated by decorative plaster.

So why is wallpaper worse then? The fact that they imitate only the pattern, but not the volume and texture. And it looks terrible. Even in the photo. Just think about it - even in the photo you can see that this is just an imitation wallpaper. Flat, boring. In life, everything looks even worse, such wallpapers will not deceive anyone.

The coolest thing about natural materials or their high-quality imitations is texture and volume.
