Colour is one of the most vital considerations when decorating our homes, influencing everything from our mood to our quality of sleep, and even our concentration. It is colour that creates a relaxing bedroom sanctuary, a crisp and bright kitchen, or a warm and welcoming hallway.

It is unsurprising therefore that colour is one of the most significant factors affecting our purchasing decisions, especially when it comes to big ticket items such as a sofa.

Recent search data analysis has revealed exactly what sofa colours we are looking for online, and the results contain some surprises.

The top 12 most sought-after sofa colours of 2023 are:

  1. Grey
  2. Green
  3. Pink
  4. Cream
  5. Black
  6. Blue
  7. Beige
  8. Navy
  9. Orange
  10. Teal
  11. White
  12. Yellow
    1. Unsurprisingly, grey topped the list as the most sought-after sofa colour for 2023. "Grey is likely a slightly more popular sofa colour choice as it's the most versatile of all the neutral colours," says Ben White, design and trade expert at Swyft Home. "This allows homeowners to change up the colours of their living room more often (if they like to redecorate) by introducing different accessories and wall colours, at a lower cost than replacing large pieces of furniture.”

Classic cream only made it into the fourth spot in favour of more bold choices – an indication of a growing willingness to embrace colourful interiors – whilst three shades of blue were included in the top ten. "Blue, in all its many shades, has long been a popular choice for stylish sofas," says Ben. "I think we will see more and more people opt for blue sofas in the coming years."

Read on for our take on the most popular sofa colours 0f 2023...

      1

      Grey

      Cox & Cox

Unsurprisingly, the perennially popular grey was the most sought-after sofa colour of the year. Infinitely versatile, a neutral grey can be adapted for almost any home, with styles running the gamut from a traditional textured tweed to a modern tactile velvet. And it forms a brilliant base for heavy pattern.

      2

      Green

      Swyft Home

"I think the rise of green interiors is to do with more people wanting to bring the outside into their homes," says Ben. Whilst crisp apple green shades sit comfortably in a country cottage setting, forest green creates a moodier and more romantic feel.

      3

      Pink

      Rachel Whiting

A surprising third place, but one that is growing in popularity since 2022. Requiring a keener eye than simple grey to avoid an overly saccharine outcome, rich or chalky shades of pink in tactile fabrics – such as a textured wool, velvet or tweed – can be a versatile and sophisticated choice.

Pictured: Country Living Kirkton Sofa at DFS

      4

      Cream

      Dunelm

Classic cream was not as highly sought-after as one might expect, despite being the picture of versatility. A brilliant neutral base from which to build, with warm undertones that invite richly patterned textiles, colourful accessories, and reddish woods. Maintain a cooler colour scheme by pairing your sofa with greys or soft blues.

Pictured: Skye Slub Faux Linen Snuggle Chair at Dunelm

      5

      Black

      Heal's

Somewhat surprisingly, black made it to fifth place in the top 12 most popular sofa colours of 2023. Bold and moody in expression, if a little tricky to pull off, black sofas work best when you fully embrace the theme – paired with dark wood floors, antiqued brass, and soft furnishings in romantic shades of grape or burgundy.

      Pictured: Eton Sofa at Heal's

      6

      Blue

      John Lewis & Partners

Another versatile choice, deep blue velvet sofas are luxurious, whilst pillowy powder blue sofas are a bit more country cosy. "Blue is a calming and tranquil colour, perfect for deep thought and introspection," says Ben. "Since a lot of us now work from home more often, this makes it a great colour scheme for concentration.”

Pictured: John Lewis Otley Large 3 Seater Sofa

      7

      Beige

      Marks & Spencer

Classic beige came in seventh place, behind its cooler neutral counterparts, white and cream. Beige lends itself to warm living room schemes like this one, and can be layered to great effect with close shades like biscuit and brown.

Pictured: Erin Sofa at Marks & Spencer

      8

      Navy

      OKA

A rich navy is the moodier counterpart to the classic blue option above. "To create drama in the space, go for a deeper, rich blue," says Kelly Collins, interior designer and head of creative at Swyft Home. "One of the best things about blue is that it works with a large number of different colours and its broad range of tones can also change the look and feel of any space."

Pictured: Avitus 3-Seater Sofa in Navy at OKA

      9

      Orange

      Lonf

A joyful choice just making it into the top 12 most popular sofa colours for 2023. A spicy and warm orange like this Pudding sofa from Loaf brightens up a room, and is a deceptively versatile centrepiece, sitting comfortably with natural materials and other warming accents such as brass.

Pictured: Pudding Sofa Bed at Loaf

      10

      Teal

      Dan Duchars | Sofology

The third blue shade to make it onto this year's list. Greener variations like a teal or sapphire introduce rich undertones that sit well when contrasted with chalkier pastels. "Eye-catching, versatile and practical, a teal, navy or deep blue sofa could make the perfect addition to your living room and are a great way to make your room pop," says Ben.

Pictured: Sofology X George Clarke Midland Hill Sofa at Sofology

      11

      White

      Loaf

A much-maligned shade for pet owners and parents. A pristine white sofa can look like it has been lifted from the pages of a glossy magazine, and invites a minimalist design scheme with a sophisticated yet sparing use of interesting accessories. Warmer shades are a more forgiving choice, and offer a neutral base for layers of pastel cushions and throws.

      Pictured: Smithy Sofa at Loaf

      12

      Yellow

      John Lewis & Partners

A cheery yellow rounds out the list – a sofa colour that we predict will grow in popularity in 2023. Yellow is deceptively versatile, sitting quite happily with most colours on the colour wheel – although most effective with softer and nature-inspired greens and blues.

      Time for a new sofa?

      By Olivia Heath

      Swyft, Polly Wreford/House Beautiful

The sofa is the most important part of any living space. As the most used item in the living room, you want it to be comfortable, stylish, and as big as possible, all without compromising floor space. You don't want to just stick your new sofa in any available space but rather make it a focal point of your design scheme, and a big part of that is deciding what colour to choose.

If you're planning to invest in a new sofa in 2023, we have looked at the most searched-for sofa colours (using search data from Semrush) to establish which will prove to be most popular, and unsurprisingly, trusty grey tops the list ahead of nature-inspired calming shades like green and blue. But perhaps the most surprising top five entry is pink – no longer a colour solely used within the confines of a child's bedroom, pink sofas can be a sophisticated choice for grown-up spaces too.

The most popular sofa colours forecast for 2023:

      1. Grey sofas

      2. Green sofas

      3. Blue sofas

      4. Pink sofas

      5. Black sofas

      6. Navy sofas

      7. Teal sofas

      8. Beige sofas

      9. Orange sofas

      10. White sofas

      11. Yellow sofas

      12. Brown sofas

Kelly Collins, interior designer and head of creative at Swyft Home, says: 'We’ve seen pastel pinks and blushes re-enter the interiors space in the last year or so, but this year we can expect more striking hot pinks start to trend. Styling is set to be more bold in the year ahead, so no more shying away from the bold pink tones in favour of the muted colours. Being brave with colourways is almost a trend within itself.'

Taking inspiration from the top sofa colours of 2023, we've found 12 fabulous sofas in this year's most on-trend hues.

Which sofas are now fashionable in 2022.

      – Articles Anderssen

The main trends in upholstered furniture in 2022 are smooth shapes, wide bases, minimalism in design. It is these trends that determine which sofas can now be considered fashionable. If we talk about the silhouette, then these are rounded models without unnecessary decorative elements, with large deep seats and smooth armrests.

What colors of upholstered furniture are in trend

The color of upholstered furniture in 2022 should be monochrome and as natural as possible, close to natural shades: earth, sand, grass, sea. Bright and colorful sofas with “screaming” upholstery are no longer in fashion. Only neutral or pastel colors - gray, green, blue, beige, brown, muted shades of red and yellow. Complex colors are in fashion: amber, mustard, golden, turquoise, terracotta, etc.

For art deco interiors, designers choose sofas in light brown, gray and white shades. The color "coffee with milk" looks noble.

Delicate shades of beige are increasingly chosen for classic interiors and neoclassical spaces.

In a modern loft or minimalist interior, you can choose a sofa in dark gray or even black. Fashionable mouse gray will look relevant in the interior of almost any style.

The photo shows a Tristan corner sofa in light gray.

Light-colored sofas may not seem like the most practical option, but modern high-tech fabrics are easy to care for and allow such furniture to look great in the interior and maintain a presentable appearance for a long time. A white sofa will look luxurious and add luxury to the space.

      In the photo sofa Madison

Another trend is wine shades in furniture. However, with these colors you need to be careful and use it locally - either just a sofa or bright accent pillows. Such furniture should not be combined with carpets and curtains of the same color.

Pictured is a jersey sofa with canape

In a modern gray-beige living room, upholstered furniture of marine shades will harmoniously look. A complex mixture of gray with turquoise or blue will give a shade that is relevant for today. Pale blue shades are traditionally used in classic interiors.

General trends, which fashionable sofas designers offer in 2022:

Consider the modern form of sofas. These are smooth lines, without sharp corners, with rounded elements, an arched or straight low back, smooth armrests or without them.

In this case, the sofa can be of any design that fits into the interior. It can be a corner, straight or modular sofa of complex shape.

The photo shows a Jersey U-shaped sofa.

At the peak of popularity among designers this year, sofas with a slight asymmetry - an unusual turn of the corner module or a back slightly beveled down.

The photo shows a Goodwin sofa with a rounded central part.

Pillows are in trend, but not any. Removable pillows should be voluminous. They can be square, rectangular or round in shape. Sofas with cushions that act as armrests are also in fashion.

Pictured is a Benedict sofa with large rectangular back cushions.

Acceptable decorative elements today are decorative stitching, contrasting edging along the edges of the back and armrests, button picking, carriage tie, decorative overlays.

Pictured is a Jersey sofa with contrasting piping and a Sea Breeze sofa bed with wooden decorative overlays.

What transformation mechanisms should be chosen in 2022?

The most comfortable sofa bed for sleeping, as a rule, is based on the accordion mechanism. In the unfolded video, the sofa turns into a complete analogue of the bed.

In the photo there is a Discovery sofa with an accordion mechanism.

It is also worth considering the option of acquiring a sofa bed with a eurobook, eurosofa, dolphin or puma mechanism. Sleeping on them is comfortable, and the transformation is easy and fast.

On the photo is a folding sofa Leon.

Even in the sofa, modern additional useful functions can be built in - a built-in heating system, massage, radio, an armrest table with a recharging option.

As finishing materials in 2022, designers recommend choosing metal, solid wood. The frame is usually made from plywood and MDF. Pay attention to quality certificates and environmental friendliness of materials and components.

At the peak of popularity today is also rattan. Sofas made of this material are a great option for outdoor furniture.

Talking about what fashionable sofas in the living room are the most relevant now, furniture industry experts also list the trendy fabrics this season. We recommend paying attention to all types of leather (from artificial to natural), matting, velvety and soft micro-velor and velor, respectable suede, original boucle and fluffy chenille. Covering from such materials meets three important requirements - high strength characteristics, easy maintenance and excellent tactility.

Fashionable sofa of 2022: 95 photos, current trends

In the interior, it is large upholstered furniture that first of all attracts attention. It forms the palette and geometry of the room, sets the overall tone of the design. In this article, we tell and show with examples how to choose a beautiful sofa: we list the current models and the most fashionable color combinations for any style.

Choosing a fashionable sofa in 2022

      Current models
      — Rounded
      — Modular
      — Minimalist
      — Corner
      — Large scale
      Trendy colors
      — Natural tones
      – Achromats
      — Sofa as an accent
      — Two colors

In the near future we will see several stable trends. Rely on them to choose a trendy sofa that will not lose its relevance through the season.

      Round lines

Social networks of designer Yulia Chudinovskikh

One of the main general trends of this year (which, most likely, will only strengthen its position) is moving away from sharp corners towards natural streamlined shapes. The fashion for rounded lines was determined by several factors: the return of retro popularity, especially of the 60s and 70s, the desire to get closer to nature and, of course, the perception of the interior as a kind of anti-stress factor that gives a feeling of comfort and safety.

In 2022, this fashion trend among sofas is expressed in the predominance of rounded models: crescents, retro-style shells, smooth zigzags, full-fledged round islands. The main advantage of this trend is versatility. You can choose an elegant sofa in boucle upholstery for a neoclassical living room, laconic furniture for minimalism or a simple option for scandi.

      12
      photo

      Modular systems

Do not lose relevance and modular systems - such furniture as a whole is now in trend. The bottom line is simple: you do not buy a finished product, but assemble your soft group yourself according to the principle of a designer.

Social networks of designer Pavel Alekseev

Modular designs have several important advantages:

      • Variability - you can choose the shape, size, content and functionality exactly to your wishes and room layout. And although such designs are made to order, which means they cost more than standard models, this makes the whole design more ergonomic and individual.
      • Multifunctional - in addition to the seats themselves, you can add a bed, cabinets and shelves, storage spaces, tables, even mini-racks to the modular system.
      • Appearance - modern design of sofas in 2022 is relevant in any style. The modular group will fit into the canonical contemporary, loft, and even eclecticism, where, for example, minimalist furniture is combined with classic decor.
      10

Another global trend is the pursuit of minimalism. This is manifested not only in the rejection of unnecessary furniture and decorations, but also in the visual component of the design.

Social networks of designer Mikhail Kurnosov

If you want to design a discreet, "clean" interior, choose a sofa for the relaxation area:

      • A simple silhouette, without complex shapes and too sharp broken lines.
      • In calm natural shades (if the palette is monochrome, the furniture can almost merge with the finish).
      • With laconic plain textiles to match the upholstery - or without it at all.
      • With an emphasis on textures instead of bright decorative elements.

But today, manufacturers offer modern models that look relevant and at the same time help to effectively use all available space.

How to use L-shaped sofas in the interior in 2022:

      • Beat the corner of an elongated room, completely occupying it with a soft group.
      • Use as a zoning tool - for example, put it not against the wall, as is usually done, but place it in the center of the kitchen-living room, visually highlighting the recreation area.
      • Organize a real lounge area in a small apartment by adding a couple of ottomans and a coffee table to the sofa. Such a soft group is suitable for chamber meetings with friends, house parties or family movie shows. Also, multifunctional models will be relevant for small spaces: sofa beds, transformers with table armrests, etc.

Large forms are becoming more and more common, especially in minimalist interiors where there is little furniture and decor, so you need to fill the space. If space permits, choose scale models that can comfortably accommodate a whole company, rather than 2-3 people. Most often, such compositions are made up of modules. You can arrange them in different ways: an amphitheater, divided into several separate blocks, L- or U-shaped. This trend looks especially impressive in large spaces with high ceilings - for example, in authentic lofts or apartments of the old stock. And, of course, in country houses.

Consider the most relevant colors for sofas in 2022. Several trends stand out clearly.

      Nature shades

      Red Robot Design social networks

The fashion for naturalness has not gone away and is unlikely to pass in the coming years. The design of living spaces strives for comfort, softness, and naturalness. Increasingly, monochrome interiors are being decorated or colors close to each other are chosen for the palette - without bright and too sharp transitions. Large furniture in this case is selected according to the principle of decoration, as a continuation of the general relaxed background.

The most popular warm colors are beige, brown and all their variations, from shortbread to milk chocolate. In the cold spectrum, it is primarily gray with its variety of tones: light and dark, delicate and brutal. If you want to add color, brighter textiles do an excellent job with this task. Or you can choose upholstery in any natural shade of green, blue or red - but it should be a little dusty, not flashy.

      14

      Achromats

Graphic without bright colors is another hot trend that finds its embodiment in upholstered furniture.

Social networks of designer Nelly Voloshina

Black and white or simply achromatic interiors are now at the peak of popularity: it is stylish, spectacular, but not too colorful. White, black and gray, in principle, always look good, and well-chosen shades and textures make the whole design of the room more noble and luxurious. At the same time, achromats are very easy to combine with other shades if they appear in the palette. Or completely abandon the color - this is a popular technique for minimalism, contemporary and scandi.

But if gray furniture is quite familiar, then a black or white sofa in the interior will give a real wow effect. But at the same time, they cause many concerns, especially the prospect of caring for light upholstery. There is nothing to be afraid of: regular care and the right fabric (durable, moisture resistant, preferably with protective impregnation) easily solve this problem.

      Sofa as an accent

Despite the general tendency to use the most calm basic shades in the interior, there is always room for color.

Social networks of designer Tatiana Saulyak

The sofa is a large interior element that occupies a central place in the room both functionally and visually. Along with this, more and more designers are moving away from the classic technique - adding accents through decor (which becomes less in minimalist spaces). Instead, you can make one piece of furniture bright - against a general neutral background, it will look especially impressive.

If you like the idea of a sofa as the main color accent, use any saturated color, but always a noble deep shade. Looks best in combination with a neutral palette:

      • Blue and blue.
      • Green or mint.
      • Terracotta and ocher.
      • Wine, pomegranate, raspberry, brick.
      • Dense shades of yellow.

      Two colors

Colorful patterns are a thing of the past — we are used to laconic and monochromatic upholstered furniture.

Social networks of the studio AZBUKA Dom

But in 2022, the brightness through the ornament was replaced by a compromise and at the same time very stylish solution - duochrome models. Most often, this technique is found in modular systems, for which separate sections of two different colors are selected. But some manufacturers also offer finished products in this design.
