The kitchen floor is likely to be one of the largest surface areas in your home, so kitchen flooring ideas always deserve some careful thought and attention.

When planning your kitchen ideas, your kitchen flooring needs to perform on many levels – durability, safety and ease of cleaning – and of course, it must look great too, so give it as much consideration as your cabinetry.

Flooring ideas should always work together with the rest of the room, so a great place to start in the kitchen is taking the look and material of your units into consideration when picking flooring.

Kitchen flooring ideas

Materials such as durable laminate and matte porcelain will look great in modern kitchens, while natural stone tiles and warm wood suit traditional designs. A popular, contemporary flooring material is polished concrete, which gives a chic, industrial edge.

Budget carefully to include all fitting costs and extra expenses for underlays, fixatives and grouts. If you’re hoping to lay underfloor heating, do check it is compatible with your flooring before you buy.

There is a wealth of kitchen flooring ideas to choose from which makes knowing how to choose the best kitchen floor somewhat tricky, so let us help you narrow it down with expert advice, our top materials, styles, finishes and designs.

1. Choose dark flooring for a contemporary look

Dark flooring does not need to make a space feel enclosed or uninviting - it can actually achieve quite the opposite effect. When paired with the correct complementary shades, black flooring can make your kitchen space feel sophisticated and contemporary, and is great for coordinating with pretty much any other color out there.

In this modern kitchen, the soft black parquet tiles form an elegant, textured design, with the white paint used on the walls making the room feel light and bright. Further complemented with natural colors and textures, the overall space feels warm and inviting.

2. Opt for luxurious marble flooring

Timeless, durable and utterly beautifully, choosing marble flooring can turn your kitchen into a truly show-stopping space.

From large format-tiles to marble vinyl effects, there are a range of styles and options that can integrate into your kitchen. Whether you complement the marble used on your countertops, or choose a contrasting marble design for added impact, the enduring material can elegantly elevate your kitchen design.

Marble flooring can also be a great option for a smaller kitchen space, George Miller, Designer at Neptune states, ‘choosing flooring for a smaller space, shouldn’t feel limiting, in fact, with a smaller area to cover, you can afford to invest in quality materials that will make a statement and stand the test of time’.

3. Add a rug for inviting comfort

Rugs are not typically associated with a kitchen space, however, kitchen rug ideas can make your kitchen more inviting and cozy with added texture.

Perfect for large, open-plan kitchen designs, a rug can make the space feel more connected and unified, as well as adding warmth and softness to hard floors. Adding a rug to your kitchen space is also a simple way to add color and character to the room.

The rug in this kitchen complements the striking blue cabinets and sits perfectly beneath the dark wooden table, grounding the table to the space whilst effortlessly connecting it to the rest of the room.

4. Create a light and airy feel with white flooring

'Using white flooring in your kitchen is a great way to make the space feel bigger and brighter - ideal for kitchen spaces that are on the smaller side,' says Homes & Gardens' Editorial Director Sarah Spiteri.

Whether you choose white painted floorboards, or opt for white stone or vinyl, white flooring can create a beautifully relaxed, calming atmosphere - perfect for a busy, high-traffic area such as a kitchen.

The white floorboards in this kitchen beautifully complement the white painted walls, emphasizing the light and space in the room. The blue painted kitchen units create an elegant contrast, adding character and balance to the space.

5. Keep it traditional with terracotta

Using traditional terracotta tiles will always create a warming, textured scheme that beautifully echoes designs and materials of the past.

Working well in both period and modern homes, this ceramic tile design is a popular choice for kitchen tile ideas, often due to its durability and timeless appeal.

Great for creating a country, farmhouse kitchen style, terracotta tiles add a timeless, earthy texture to a space.

6. Invest in real wood kitchen flooring

If it's warmth and character you want, wood kitchen flooring is a great buy.

Jenna Kane, Product Development at Kersaint Cobb says:

'As a particular busy area of the home, the flooring you select for your kitchen needs to fulfil a number of requirements. Wood is a sturdy and attractive solution with the added benefit of wiping stains clean if you are making a particular messy recipe!

'Wood flooring can be a striking focal point in any kitchen design and the natural grain can add texture and interest to the space. You can opt to select timber flooring that matches wood featured on cabinetry or even smaller accessories and shelving.

Is wood flooring suitable for kitchens? 'You must always bear in mind that wood is a natural material and can be scratched and dented if too many items are dropped on it or damaged if too much liquid is spilt. Therefore look at your home and who will be using the kitchen to select the option which is right for you,' concludes Jenna Kane.

7. Choose a herringbone wood kitchen flooring for an elegant look

With so much choice available in terms of both material and pattern, it can be daunting to find the right kitchen flooring ideas when planning a kitchen.

Herringbone styles are currently very popular, either in ceramic or wood, and they’re an ideal way of introducing subtle yet beautiful pattern and a welcome sense of texture into even the simplest kitchen flooring, instantly making it a focal point.

There has been an increase in the popularity of patterned wood floors. Larger herringbone pieces often look more contemporary. If it’s for an open plan kitchen, a distressed chevron or herringbone floor will stand up well to general wear and tear.

Choose a delicate parquet if you want to give a nod to a feature floor without being too over the top. Classic parquet flooring can be laid as individual blocks, or the effect can be copied by engineered wood planks, which are easier to fit.

'We would always recommend you seek professional guidance to ensure the flooring is fitted and maintained correctly as moisture can be an issue in this environment, especially with parquet as this is a very skilled install and not DIY,' continues Jenna Kane.

8. Pick real wood for warmth

Warm and welcoming underfoot, solid wood kitchen flooring will need careful treating and maintenance to make sure it doesn’t warp, as it is less resistant to water damage than engineered wood (a thin layer of wood veneer).

However, if your scheme is open plan, you could run the same floor throughout the space to give a visual link in different zones – dining, cooking and lounging, for instance.

‘Engineered timber is better in kitchens than solid wood, as the layered construction of the boards creates a very strong and stable surface. This is particularly important if you are installing underfloor heating or a cast iron cooker,' says Peter Keane, director of The Natural Wood Floor Company .

9. Combine kitchen flooring materials to complement cabinetry

'Anyone who has ever designed a kitchen will know that it's vital to choose kitchen cabinetry at the same time as kitchen flooring ideas,' says Homes & Gardens' Editor in Chief Lucy Searle.

'It makes sense that kitchen cabinets come first, but choosing the flooring should be the next big decision – ideally taken hand-in-hand with picking out countertops. My best advice, if you don't have an experienced interior decorator choosing for you, is to bring a sample of the cabinetry you have chosen into the kitchen, along with samples of flooring and countertops.

'Hold the cabinetry sample vertically so that the light hits it at exactly the angle it would when installed, then sit the kitchen flooring and countertop samples against it, but horizontally so that, again, the light hits it at the right angle. Observe the different tones it takes on in daylight and under artificial light – only then can you really ensure you have chosen well.'

10. Lay wood-look laminate or vinyl for a practical kitchen flooring option

If you are remodelling a kitchen in a rental property, or need a temporary solution, both luxury vinyl kitchen flooring ideas and laminate (wood particleboard with sealed and protected printed paper over the top), which is laid in planks that fit together for easy installation, are good-looking alternatives to real wood and stone.

Make sure you choose a laminate that is suitable for kitchen flooring use, as some are not suitable in damp environments.

11. Go for a practical wood-effect porcelain tile

'Timber-effect plank-shaped porcelain tiles are also popular, not least because they introduce a sense of character and movement,' says Jules Archard, showrooms manager of Domus .

'Previously, their totally flat printed surface used to give away the fact that the planks were not made of real wood, but now a woodgrain is pressed into the surface of the tile before it is printed, so their texture is realistic too.'

12. Source reclaimed wood for a rustic, country look

Reclaimed wood floors are not only full of charm, character and history, but buying anything salvaged is environmentally responsible and spot-on for today's recycling trend.

Whether it's oak beams recovered from old American barns or Burmese teak parquet reclaimed from a remodelled school, salvaged boards bear the unique marks of time, much like a slice of history at home.

'You can't get more green than buying reclaimed timber flooring,' says Nick Newman of celebrated British salvage specialists Lassco .

'It is environmentally responsible and will have been sourced relatively locally, had the nails removed by hand by us, then sorted and stacked. Reuse reduces landfill while curbing the need to plunder the earth's resources. Salvage generally has not travelled very far, so it bears a comparatively tiny carbon footprint.'

13. Be on trend with a large format kitchen floor tile

If you're looking for kitchen floor tile ideas, you might wonder what's on trend.

'At the moment, we find customers are leaning towards larger tile sizes as often minimizing the number of grout joints is a priority,' comments Joshua Fernandez at Quorn Stone .

'In terms of kitchen trends, we always advise customers to steer clear and go for a classic style in the kitchen area. Purchasing a stone flooring or porcelain floor is an investment for the home and one that often takes careful consideration – our advice is to always go neutral in your chosen floor covering for ground floor spaces and instead inject colour through paint colors and accessories. A lick of paint is far easier to change in years to come than a different floor.'

14. Install a matte finish stone for a relaxed look

'We are seeing a move towards kitchen flooring ideas that create a very relaxed feel with a reassuring warmth, and soft, matte limestone-effect porcelain tiles fit the bill well,' says Jules Archard of Domus.

'This finish is also easier to keep clean than polished or very textured tiles. Consider large format tiles, such as 1.2 x 2.4m, if you want to create a sense of scale and drama, even with a neutral tile.'

15. Choose natural materials for an elegant look

Natural stones like marble and limestone can create a timeless look, like in the elegant white kitchen above.

However, Jules Archard adds: 'If you prefer to use a real stone, such as limestone, for its natural beauty, you do need to embrace the fact it is porous and may stain and weather over time, requiring regular maintenance to keep it looking its best. '

16. Pick terrazzo for contemporary kitchen flooring ideas

'Porcelain tiles are by far and away the most popular material these days, because they are robust, non-porous, highly stain and scratch resistant and work well with underfloor heating, and because they come in such a huge variety of designs, colors and formats,' says Jules Archand.

'Stone-, wood-, concrete- and terrazzo-effect porcelain tiles score highly; it’s crazy how faithful some of the reproductions are.'

Layering in kitchen rug ideas is a great way to add warmth and softness underfoot, helps with acoustics and brings extra texture and pattern to a space.

If you want the soft powdery colors and pattern of encaustic (concrete) tiles without the maintenance requirements, consider an encaustic-look porcelain, such as Puzzle from Domus (above).

Or create a bespoke floor by combining shapes: it is amazing how many different kitchen floor tile ideas and designs you can create with a triangular format in a range of colors.

18. Find the right stone kitchen flooring

Stone kitchen flooring choices include natural stone, man-made ceramic, terracotta and porcelain. All are hardwearing and easy to clean, with porcelain being the most hardwearing of all due to its non-porous, scratch resistant properties.

For kitchen flooring ideas with individual character and natural beauty, look no further than natural stone: no two tiles will ever be identical, so your kitchen flooring will be unique.

Stone offers a classic and luxurious look and tends to improve as it acquires the ‘patina’ of age. Smooth marbles and honed limestones are a sophisticated and smart choice, or choose a weathered flagstone that sits comfortably in a country kitchen.

Make sure your tiles are treated before laying to avoid staining.

19. Add a pop of color with kitchen flooring ideas

We’re so accustomed to standard tiles that it is often easy to forget that the variety in size and manufacturing processes gives rise to a huge number of design possibilities. Kitchen flooring ideas are a beautiful way to experiment with bold, distinctive pattern choices, especially if you choose to keep the rest of your kitchen color scheme neutral.

'We’ve found that tiles of this nature were commonly used in smaller spaces, such as shower enclosures, cloakrooms and kitchen backsplashes, but as we’ve grown to know and love playful patterns, we’re branching out to using them in large kitchens and open plan spaces,' says Katy Harris of Verona .

20. Pick concrete kitchen flooring ideas for an industrial flavor

(Image credit: Polished concrete in a kitchen setting, design by Main Kitchen Company)

Far from being ordinary construction materials, the raw unfinished beauty of plaster and concrete find a very stylish home in kitchen flooring ideas. In their exposed, uncovered state, both plaster and concrete have a bold, utilitarian quality, and an almost brutal sophistication.

Concrete, in particular, is a hardwearing and versatile material that can be cast into shapes and slabs, or poured, smoothed and polished, making it suitable for floors, countertops and even part of the kitchen itself if it’s an industrial look you are after.

While polished concrete requires specialist installation, it can last a lifetime and requires minimal maintenance. It is wise to install a heating system as your concrete flooring goes in, otherwise it can feel quite cold underfoot – and retrofitting can be a costly and disruptive task. You may also want to add a large cozy rug to soften up the space and help absorb sound and prevent unwanted echoing throughout your property.

21. Be bold with pattern for a lively, fun space

Love a dramatic scheme? Bold geometrics and exotic Moroccan designs are particularly contemporary and versatile kitchen flooring ideas, as they have a timeless appeal that means that they’re equally at home in both modern and traditional kitchens.

22. Choose a cottage-look tile

In small kitchens, 'keep it simple and don’t use too many different tile formats, colors and finishes,' advises Dorothee Junkin of Dorothee Junkin Design Studio .

'Less is more when it comes to bold kitchen flooring, so use pattern selectively. It loses its effect when there is too much of it or when there are other patterns competing for attention.

'Try a classic diagonal checkerboard or a very defined and crisp geometric, so that the eye can catch the defining principle of the pattern with just one glance.'

What is the best flooring for a kitchen?

Natural stone is arguably the best kitchen flooring. It should last forever and acquire a lovely patina over time, but it can be cold and unwelcoming underfoot, so ensure you couple it with underfloor heating and rugs.

Wood planks are a timeless classic but can be expensive and need regular after-care, while tiled floors can be cold and unforgiving underfoot (underfloor heating will help).

If you have an open plan kitchen living room, you may want to use contrasting floor materials to define zones, or else use the same floor throughout for a fluid, seamless space (a good option for small kitchen layouts).

What is the most durable kitchen flooring?

Again, natural stone is the most durable kitchen flooring, closely followed by porcelain tile – if you are trying to balance kitchen flooring costs, the latter will give you good durability at a lower price.

All kitchen flooring ideas need to be tough, long-lasting and hardwearing, so consider comfort, durability and maintenance issues as well as pattern, finish and looks.

It is always better to get your floor laid by a professional, whichever type of material you choose; they can advise on substrate, quantities and any special finishes or treatments that will extend the life of your kitchen flooring.

Limestone, slate, granite, sandstone and travertine (a limestone/marble mix) come in many sizes, formats and finishes depending on the color and finish you want. Not all stones are equally durable though, so ensure your choice is sealed against splashes and stains.

What is the easiest kitchen flooring to keep clean?

Single sheet kitchen flooring ideas are easiest to keep clean – poured rubber, concrete and vinyl sheet are all really resilient to dirt, scratches, chips or stains. However, all can be damaged if not swept regularly, as constant treading in of small stones or grit can eventually mark the surface. A quick mop with a general cleaning solution will finish the task.

Polished concrete will need resealing every three to nine months, but other than that you can treat it like any other durable floor and sweep and mop it to keep it clean.

Stone floors are tough, won't harbour dust and are easy to maintain with a quick vacuum and mop with a mild detergent, although pitted tiles and grout lines will attract dirt.

Laminate is durable, but needs a good vacuuming (with a hard floor attachment) before being cleaned. Use a general floor cleaner diluted in warm water, but as you would with wood, make sure no pools of water sit on the floor as you clean – a damp wipe with the mop is perfect.

When you’re remodeling your kitchen, it’s essential to choose a floor that looks sharp and modern but still functions the way you need a kitchen floor to function. The latest kitchen flooring trends can inspire your search.

If you use your kitchen even a little bit, you already know your kitchen floor must be extremely durable. It’s also important to make sure your floor isn’t sensitive to spills, water, stains, and everything else that life throws at it. The good news is, you don’t have to choose between just hardwood and tile.

The endless flooring options available are leading to even cooler, more exciting kitchen themes than ever before. This style guide will show you the hottest colors, patterns, and trends, including rustic, farmhouse, industrial, and contemporary kitchen flooring.

Let’s get started!

2022 Trending Kitchen Flooring Types

Okay, so I mentioned that, in the kitchen, you don’t want a high-maintenance kitchen floor. In 2022 and, I believe, for at least the next decade, you will see a surge in low-maintenance flooring like waterproof vinyl.

There are also a ton of more high-end luxury trends like marble and engineered wood. Take a look at how many options are available these days! It’s crazy.

Waterproof Vinyl Kitchen Flooring

This vinyl flooring is 100% waterproof. There are two options for waterproof vinyl floors: WPC vinyl and SPC vinyl. Both options are trendy right now, but SPC is slightly newer, and it’s growing faster.

WPC stands for wood plastic composite but is also commonly referred to as waterproof core. The core layer is completely waterproof. You’ll see WPC vinyl planks with prints mimicking the hottest wood trends including distressed and handscraped looks that can fool even a discerning eye.

Meanwhile, SPC is made from a stone-plastic composite core. It’s also entirely waterproof, but the core is more rigid. That’s why SPC is also called rigid core vinyl flooring. SPC is like WPC vinyl on steroids. You get the tough, waterproof, gorgeous floors WPC is known for with that new, extra-strong rigid core.

Will the waterproof vinyl kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! Waterproof vinyl floors are the fastest growing floors on market, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and other water-prone areas.

Vinyl Sheet Kitchen Flooring

So what’s new in the world of sheet vinyl? Answer: just about everything! New colors, patterns, textures, and materials are offering homeowners an easy upgrade. Fiberglass cores and backing ensure better durability. Plus, the stone-look and wood-look textures have never looked better, boasting exquisite detail.

Natural looks aren’t the only area where vinyl sheets excel. Unlike most other vinyl products, sheets also offer bright, decorative patterns.

Best of all, vinyl sheets can be temporary, especially if they have that fiberglass backing. That means you can lay it out with ease, and pull it up without a lot of hassle. Renters rejoice! Finally, a temporary flooring solution that doesn’t look temporary.

Will the sheet vinyl flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

For sure, you’re going to see sheet vinyl making a big come-back in the years to come. It’s durable, easy to install, and versatile enough to come in tons of styles, patterns, and colors. What’s not to love?

Tile Kitchen Flooring

I hesitate to call this a trend because tile floors have been the kitchen flooring staple for years. Tile is known for being durable and easy to clean, perfect for kitchens.

But, with the surge in wood kitchen flooring, is tile on its way out?

Not at all! Tile is still as trendy in kitchens as ever before. However, the trending tile looks have truly evolved over the last 5-10 years.

With current flooring trends, I talk a lot about technology. Technology has given us the ability to achieve virtually any look with any type of flooring.

The wood-look tile kitchen flooring trend is super hot right now. Tile manufacturers are keeping up with the times and following the trends of contemporary wood and stone. This means you can have the sleek, current kitchen of your dreams with good ol’ dependable tile flooring.

Will the tile kitchen last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! I predict that tile will never fully go out of style in the kitchen.

I just recommend following the current wood and stone flooring trends to get a tile look that will stay current for the lifetime of your floor.

SHOP TILE

Laminate was the original wood-look kitchen flooring. Before laminate took off, you didn’t see many kitchens with wood (or wood-look) floors.

Before laminate, kitchen floors were often tile, old-school vinyl, or even-older-school linoleum. Throwing an inexpensive wood-look option into the mix changed things.

If you ask me, I would say laminate flooring is responsible for many of the current kitchen flooring trends and other flooring trends, as well.

As technology improves, so does laminate flooring. You will see even more convincing wood looks and all of the current wood trends including handscraped wood looks, and distressed wood looks.

And! Now, there is even water-resistant laminate! Now this is flooring perfect for the kitchen!

Will the laminate kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I don’t think so. Over the next couple of years, homeowners will probably continue to use laminate floors in their kitchens, and the wood-look will stay current.

However, I predict that newer, more waterproof options will likely be trending in the kitchen and all around the house over the next decade. If waterproof laminate advances more, we might see a comeback.

SHOP LAMINATE SHOP WATERPROOF LAMINATE

Sticking with the wood kitchen flooring trend, engineered wood is a relatively new kid on the block. A step up in durability and perception from laminate, engineered wood is the only option (aside from solid hardwood, obviously) that is made from real wood.

Engineered wood features a thin veneer top layer of solid wood; however, the remaining base of the product is made up of artificial materials. This base could be composed of plywood or high-density fiberboard.

If you want real wood in your kitchen, engineered wood is the way to go. It’s less expensive than solid hardwood and the artificial base is more water-resistant than solid wood.

Engineered wood is extremely durable and offers looks in just about every trending wood look. With no extra finishing or refinishing required, engineered wood is out-of-the-box ready and, often, super easy to install yourself. I think of it as the busy homeowner’s wood flooring.

Will the engineered wood kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I think so. It is the only option other than solid hardwood that looks exactly like the real deal. And people love the real deal. I believe engineered wood flooring will quickly become a kitchen staple.

2022 Trending Kitchen Flooring Looks

New technology gives us the ability to realistically mimic countless natural and man-made materials in many different materials. This is changing the game in kitchen flooring and, really, flooring in general.

Below, you’ll see new, contemporary kitchen flooring looks that you never dreamed would be possible.

There are some pretty cool things happening. Some will turn into kitchen flooring staples, while some are just fads. Don’t worry; we’ll steer you in the right direction.

Wood-Look Kitchen Flooring

Wood and wood looks in the kitchen have been popular for years and years, but the real high quality looks weren’t accessible to everyone.

Solid hardwood flooring is expensive, finicky, and not ideal for areas where there will be a lot of moisture, like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. While solid hardwood is still widely sought after in the kitchen, homeowners are beginning to discover all kinds of gorgeous options that rival solid hardwood’s sharp looks.

And, no, I’m not just talking about laminate, unless it’s waterproof. Waterproof laminate is new and awesome and trending!

I’m mostly talking about waterproof vinyl planks and wood-look tile flooring. These two are perfect for the high demands of even the busiest kitchen.

With these new durable and waterproof wood looks, you can achieve any trending wood style in your kitchen, worry-free.

Will the wood-look kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

1,000 times, yes! Wood-look flooring is a trend across the entire home that isn’t going away anytime soon.

This trend will only increase, both in the kitchen and out, over the next decade and beyond.

ALL WOOD  WOOD-LOOK VINYL  WOOD-LOOK TILE

Stone-look kitchen flooring is perfect for the more rustic or industrial kitchen looks. While not as popular as the wood-look style, stone-look floors are still a go-to for many homeowners.

The thing about natural stone is that it’s more expensive and requires extra maintenance because it’s porous. If you’re not up for that, the good news is vinyl and tile floors can mimic the gorgeous look of stone. You can achieve these gorgeous stone looks without the price tag or the maintenance hassles.

A few of the most popular stone looks in 2022 will be:

You betcha! Stone looks are classic in the kitchen and, with technological advancements, you will only see them more often over the next couple of decades.

Marble-Look Kitchen Flooring

The kitchen is one of the best places in the home to pull out all the stops when it comes to renovation because it’s guaranteed to increase home value. If you’re looking for a high-end luxury floor, then marble is for you.

Real marble kitchen flooring offers one-of-a-kinds looks with beautiful swirling patterns. Bright, clean, elegant marble floors have been one of the hottest gems on the flooring market for centuries.

But maybe you’re working on a tight budget. Plenty of marble-look tiles can give you a convincing appearance with a smaller price tag. Ceramic tile manufacturers have mastered the marble look and they bring it to you in a less porous, more durable, less expensive, and more accessible material. It is the best of all worlds.

Will the marble kitchen last in 2022 and beyond?

For sure. Marble is timeless. If you invest in a marble look, your home will always be in style.

SHOP MARBLE-LOOK FLOORING

Concrete-Look Kitchen Flooring

Concrete looks are making their way into contemporary interior design! Huge slabs of concrete tiles, concrete countertops, you name it. This modern, industrial look is in.

While warm, rustic looks are prominent in 2022, there is still a niche for a more cool, detached look. A rustic wood floor is perfect for your family home, while a concrete-look tile is an awesome touch to a trendy apartment.

It’s a more specific aesthetic, but a relevant one to look out for this year.

Will the concrete-look kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Eh, I don’t think so. It’s just so contradictory to all the other warm, natural trends we’re seeing. We expect the industrial concrete look to stay trendy for the next few years and then trail off when something new pops up.

Decorative Kitchen Flooring

More and more people are using their floor to express their personalities, and nothing packs a punch quite like a decorative tile or decorative vinyl flooring. This is a chance to get creative, with cutting edge, graphic styles that make your floor look like a work of art.

Decorative tile floors can be found in a wide range of styles that match the rest of your space. Here are a couple of decorative tile styles that are going to be huge in 2022:

Will the decorative kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

For a while. This trend is bold, and while lots of people will love it, others might want something simpler. For that reason, if you’re planning to resell your home in the next few years, it’s a good idea to go with something more neutral.

2022 Kitchen Flooring Style Trends

If you’re going for a particular style in the kitchen, you want to make sure that this style will stay current along with the floor that goes with it. Here’s a look at which kitchen styles will be trending this year.

Farmhouse Kitchen Flooring

Farmhouse style is rustic, but with more charm and clean lines. This style has been super hot in 2020 and will certainly carry on in 2022.

This is probably because it combines the old and the new in a way that’s beautiful and interesting. Often, the color palette is crisp white walls, cabinets, and ceilings with exposed beams and rustic-looking wood.

Contrasting your floor with the wall color makes the flooring be the star of the show. Choose a handscraped, distressed, or reclaimed look for your floors. I would go with a dark gray oak look or dark browns with color variations. The more distressed, the better!

Will the large farmhouse kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! While the ultra distressed looks may be more fleeting, handscraped is here to stay and a little distress won’t put you out of style either.

Well, I mean, this makes sense. Since contemporary means the looks that are popular right now, it absolutely should be trending!

The look of contemporary flooring is clean, smooth, but bold. This is perfect for the open kitchen floor plans that have become super popular over the last few years.

If you want a pop of color in your kitchen, choose a neutral floor with a light finish. It will make your colors stand out and a light finish makes your kitchen look more open and airy– perfect for this style.

Will the large farmhouse kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

These smooth neutral looks will, likely, always be stylish. However, I believe that what we think of as “contemporary” is currently in the process of a pretty big evolution and that, soon, the contemporary look will include more handscraped and charactered looks.

Coastal style brings the beach to you. Don’t mistake this as a beach house only style though; mainlanders are adopting it as well.

Coastal style is light, airy, with plenty of beachy colors like white, gray, blue, and sandy tan. This pairs well with trending whitewashed kitchen floors or a beautiful blonde wood look.

Will the coastal kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

The light and airy look, yes. But the whole coastal vibe? I wouldn’t count on it. I’d recommend choosing a blonde wood and steering away from the whitewashed super coastal look.

2022 Trending Kitchen Flooring Colors

Going into 2022, cool, contemporary tones are in, as well as whites and grays. You’ll also see a few warmer, middle-of-the-road options sneaking in, especially with more comfortable, homey styles

“Oak Hardwood is still the king of kitchen flooring. The number one thing we are seeing is a throwback to lighter colored hardwood. Gone are the days of dark wood floors, now we are seeing lighter brown tones close to fruitwood. Our clients are asking for brown and gray tones over the reddish hues of the 1990s.”  – Bryan Sebring, Sebring Design

Blonde Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

For years, lighter floors were viewed as outdated or inexpensive. That is no longer the case. Not by a long shot!

As more homeowners embrace the light, airy feel in their home, you will see a huge resurgence in blonde wood (and wood-look) floors. Blonde floors, in particular, can give you that light timeless feel.

With blonde wood, your decorating possibilities are endless. You can go for a chic, contemporary feel or a rustic, homey vibe. All without changing your floors.

The open, light, airy look is especially popular in modern kitchens. Homeowners are now steering away from sharper, modern, industrial looks and trending towards an updated farmhouse style. Light floors are perfect for this!

Contrary to ultra-dark espresso looks, blonde floors make your kitchen feel larger and more open, especially if you use large planks. But we’ll get to that later on.

Will the blonde kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

If you ask me, the blonde wood look will become a trend-turned-classic before you can even think about switching it up to something new. If you like them, go for it! They’ll be a hit for quite a while.

Whitewashed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

The whitewashed look is more of a west coast / California trend that is starting to spread across the country. Well, some parts.

As that relaxed, California vibe is spreading, so are the floors that come with it. And white-washed wood is at the top of the list.

In addition to the California, beachy look, whitewashed floors are also excellent for the now-trending farmhouse style homes (similar to the blonde wood looks we discussed earlier), particularly in the kitchen.

Now, when I saw “whitewashed”, I don’t mean a smooth, finished white floor. Whitewashed wood and wood-look floors typically show signs of wear with the darker colors peeking out from underneath. It fits right in with the aged and worn trends happening across all styles of flooring.

Whitewash will make your home look brighter, bigger, and more relaxed. It can give that “beachy” feel or also an upscale contemporary feel, depending on the rest of your decor.

Will the whitewashed kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Over on the east coast, homeowners are still turning their nose up at the whole west coast look and feel. If this trend lasts, it will be regional, at best. If you’re looking for a light wood look, I suggest going for a more versatile blonde look instead.

SHOP WHITEWASH TILE

Just like the whitewashed wood is trending, bright white tiles are super hot in the kitchen, too. This year, the theme is contrast. You will see luminous whites in unique shapes like fans or hexagons. Or, white tiles setting the backdrop for bright, colorful kitchen decor.

The marble-look tile trend is going to be huge, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial spaces.

White tiles, like white wood, instantly make your kitchen look bigger, especially if you use large format tiles. Put these tiles in a kitchen with lots of natural sunlight for a truly special look.

A great thing about choosing white tiles is you have so many options for counters, cabinets, and decor.  Is there anything that doesn’t go with white? I don’t think so.

Will the white tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Yes! White is super hot right now. As dark looks near the end of their trend cycle, whites are only becoming more popular.

And the marble look? It will never go out of style.

Gray Kitchen Flooring

Gray has been the hottest trend in flooring, cabinets, paint, and basically everything for the past few years. While its massive popularity is declining slightly in favor of lighter wood looks, it’s still a great choice if you want a more contemporary look.

In addition to looking chic and trendy, gray floors set the tone of a cool, contemporary kitchen. They give you a neutral backdrop for decorating with bold colors and creative patterns. Gray floors are the perfect backdrop for this kind of statement.

Will the gray kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Heck, yes! Gray will be hot and trendy for decades to come. I wouldn’t give it a second thought!

High Color Variation Kitchen Flooring

High color variation is trending in wood (and wood looks) as well as tile. Wood looks typically feature color variation between planks, whereas high variation in tile typically refers to the amount of color variation in each plank.

Homeowners love the natural, rustic look that higher color variation provides. In nature, stone and wood aren’t so uniform; there are all kinds of inconsistencies.

Now, with modern technology, you can achieve these more random, natural looks with laminate, vinyl, engineered wood, ceramic tile, you name it! This makes your kitchen floor more of a statement piece and tends to pair best with simple but contemporary decor.

Will the high color variation kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

We’re probably nearing the end of high variation flooring being a super popular trend. The challenge with something bold like high color variation is it’s a very specific aesthetic. More subtle variation in wood looks will likely be trendy for the next decade or so. Although, I predict high variation kitchen tiles will stay trendy significantly longer.

2022 Kitchen Flooring Layout and Pattern Trends

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a huge resurgence in patterned floors. And it all started in the kitchen!

Unfortunately, when people hear the word “pattern” or the dreaded “parquet” (which, BTW, just means pattern), they imagine the horribly out of date 1970s parquet wood floors.

The updated, trending parquet looks, however, are anything but dated. This year, you’ll see sleek, upscale, modern patterns in the kitchen and, really, throughout the home.

“With the popularity of modern and transitional styles in kitchen cabinets, adding textures to the floor like borders have come back in style with chevron and herringbone patterns being the two most popular.” – Bryan Sebring, Sebring Design

Chevron and Herringbone Kitchen Flooring

Some people may think chevron and herringbone are the same. Let’s clear up that misconception. While similar, they have their differences.

Herringbone pattern floors create a contemporary zig-zag pattern by connecting two planks at a 90-degree angle. This makes your floor look pretty unique, and it’s easy to DIY, so it’s a popular trend with homeowners.

Chevron floors require flooring to be angled and come together to a point. These floors also feature an arrow-like design, but the planks are angled and come together to a point.

You can find a lot of products with these patterns already built-in, so you don’t have to put in all that effort during installation. I love it when you can take a shortcut, and no one’s ever going to notice. They’ll all be gushing over your dazzling floor without realizing how easy it was.

Will the chevron and herringbone kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This trend isn’t likely to last forever, but it sure looks pretty while it’s here.

And, it will probably stay trendy in the kitchen the longest.

Hexagon tiles first gained popularity in the early 20th century, typically accompanied by subway wall tiles. They can provide a similar classic, vintage look to subway tile floors. They started as smaller, busier-looking tiles, but increasingly larger sizes have made them even more popular.

These days, you’ll see ultra-modern, almost futuristic looks. Imagine super clean, sharp lines, whites, blacks and grays, and very minimalist decor. Even metallics! That’s this new futuristic wave of hexagon kitchen floor tiles.

Will the hexagon tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Sparingly. I do believe you’ll continue to see hexagon tile kitchen floors over the next decade. But, the bigger trend will continue to be larger tiles and planks. This is more of a niche market.

SHOP HEXAGON TILE FLOORING

Trickling Pattern Kitchen Flooring

You’ve probably seen this trend on Pinterest. Trickling floor transitions are the hottest new craze and for a good reason. It looks super cool!

Instead of transitioning to new flooring with a straight line, trickled flooring slowly blends two contrasting flooring types (like tile and planks) so they “trickle” into each other.

This pattern is often achieved with hexagons, but any tile shape will work to create a one-of-a-kind look as you transition from the kitchen to other rooms in your home. It’s the ultimate way to express your creativity.

Will the trickling floor pattern trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Maybe! This bold design is not for everyone, but it does add a unique modern touch to any space. My guess is that the trickling floors trend will grow more in the coming years, but never become the go-to option for flooring.

That classic black and white checkered kitchen floor is making a big comeback! Retro and vintage black and white flooring has grown in popularity over the last few years.

Checkered kitchen floors are going to be super trendy in 2022. You’ll see a huge resurgence in everything from this time, including the vintage color accents and that quaint, cozy style.

This refreshed vintage look is a great way to update a smaller kitchen. In those days, most kitchens were half the size of the kitchens we have now and the style fit perfectly into that small, homey space.

Personally, I don’t think it would work so well with a huge open floor plan.

Will the checkered kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Not for long. I think this is a look that will be super popular with younger, millennial homeowners for several years to come. However, if you’re thinking about long-term resale value with a wealthier market, I would go with a wood look, instead.

Patchwork Tile Kitchen Flooring

Patchwork tiles are a fun new twist on the mosaic trend. Enjoy unique, intricate patterns with the ease of a mix and match design.

The patchwork tile floor trend has evolved from the current obsession with authenticity in design. Who wants a perfectly pristine floor when you can have the personality of a colorful patchwork?

This style leads to a busy-looking floor, that’s for sure. So we recommend you style the rest of your kitchen with neutral colors and simplified lines. With patchwork tiles, your floor does all the talking for you.

Will the patchwork tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This style will grow among younger homeowners as tastes trend toward

Wide Plank Kitchen Flooring

This is one trend you can expect to see every year in every style for the foreseeable future. Longer, wider planks make your kitchen look larger, more open, and less busy.

At this point, short, thin planks look pretty outdated. Going with smaller planks could significantly reduce your home’s resale value. And also, they just won’t look as good.

Now, I do think we’ll get to a point where enough is enough already and we will maintain these new traditional sizes. But, I recommend getting on board with the large plank trend!

Will the wide plank kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Manufacturers are only trending towards even wider and longer planks. This trend will soon become a classic staple and will likely last the test of time.

WIDE PLANK WOOD  WIDE PLANK VINYL  WIDE PLANK TILE

As opposed to tiny subway tiles, this year you will see plenty of extra-large tiles. Large-format tiles have been trending for quite some time with manufacturers continuing to create larger and larger individual tiles.

Wonder why they’re so popular? Large-format tiles make your kitchen look bigger, especially if you choose a light color. Additionally, larger tiles = fewer grout lines. I hate grout anywhere in the house but especially in the kitchen.

Grout is the one thing that makes cleaning tile kind of a pain. It stains more easily than the tile and, because it’s sunken a bit from the tile, it’s harder to get in there and give it a good scrub.

Will the large format tile kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

Without a doubt! Large format tiles and wide planks are here to stay. In the kitchen, and across the home.

2022 Kitchen Flooring Texture Trends

This year, texture will be more prevalent than ever before. In addition to wirebrushed and handscraped wood looks, you’ll also start to see more distressed looks in the kitchen.

As I mentioned above, high variation is in! Not just for colors but textures, as well. You’ll see more and more kitchen floors where no two planks look the same, particularly with handscraped looks.

Handscraped Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

This one is my favorite! Handscraped looks instantly make your kitchen look timeless and expensive. These are perfect for a rustic kitchen with plenty of character. They’re also a great backdrop for industrial kitchens, as well.

Because handscraped floors look truly finished, they are trendy not just with younger homeowners but with more established homeowners, as well. Handscraped floors are almost guaranteed to amp up your home value.

You’ll see trendy handscraped wood looks in traditional wood, engineered wood, laminate, vinyl and tile. And, honestly, they’re all in! Each floor just has different advantages so it’s really up to you what you’re looking for.

Will the handscraped kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This unique, individual, handcrafted look will absolutely stand the test of time. It looks expensive, and people love expensive things.

HANDSCRAPED WOOD

Homeowners are loving weathered wirebrushed looks. This trendy look adds character to your floor without looking unfinished.

Another bonus of wirebrushed floors? They hide dirt really well so you don’t have to clean your floors as often! And, if you’re anything like me, that is a huge selling point. Especially in the kitchen.

In 2020, wirebrushed floors were the leading trend in textured flooring. However, moving forward, I anticipate that handscraped and distressed looks will knock them out of the running pretty quickly.

While the wirebrushed floors are cool, if the trend towards imperfections and character continues, distressed and handscraped wood will likely have more to offer in both variety and character.

Will the wirebrushed kitchen trend last in 2022 and beyond?

While I don’t think it will last forever in the entire home, I do think wirebrushed looks will always have a place in the kitchen. Especially with their ability to hide dirt.

However, if you want a seamless floor throughout your home, I would recommend going handscraped instead.

WIREBRUSHED WOOD

Distressed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

People love floors with character and it’s no secret that distressed floors have a whole lot of it!

With intentional scrapes, knotholes, and even burns, distressed floor textures are meant to give your floor character, like it’s much older than it actually is.

Setting the tone with a floor that looks almost historic instantly gives you an envy-inducing decor. Distressed floors make a great pairing with brick walls, fireplaces, stacked stone, farmhouse kitchens, basically every other hot interior design trend going at the moment.

Will the distressed kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I do believe distressed looks will continue to be popular, particularly with younger generations. However, I don’t anticipate it will spread quite in the same way as handscraped and wirebrushed looks.

If you’re looking at long term resale value, I would choose handscraped looks.

TOP-100 photos of interesting floor design options in the kitchenDecor and interior design

Decor and interior design > Site map > Floor decoration > Kitchen floor - 100 photos of the most fashionable design ideas in the interior of the kitchen

If we are talking about the floor in the kitchen, then the ideas of designers allow both to solve the practical side of the issue and to satisfy the requirements of the owner.

Basic requirements:

The area subject to aggressive wear, namely the work area, must be equipped with a floor that is not subject to deformation. How to decide?

If you are tormented by the question of which floor to choose for the kitchen, then it is worth considering in detail all the existing options.

Linoleum

Linoleum is currently the most popular flooring in the kitchen. Not only does the material meet all the requirements mentioned above, but also the quality is combined with practicality, and all this at an affordable price.

The linoleum color scheme makes it possible to find the right combination. For the kitchen, it is ideal to use linoleum, the thickness of which is at least 0.3 mm. The floor is so easy to maintain on a daily basis and, moreover, it is not expensive. Its installation is easy, and tools for work are in every home.

Laminate

Laminate board is made according to the most modern technologies, has unique characteristics, but still it is not necessary to lay such a coating in the working area, because of its low moisture resistance. The stains are almost impossible to remove. Boards are laid on a specially prepared surface.

The disadvantage of this coating is deformation.

Ceramic tiles

Tiles will last for decades. This floor is not at all afraid of scratches, spilled liquids, oils and other stains.

The tiles are chosen for their reliability and for other reasons. So, the tile is wear-resistant, safe for health, does not emit any compounds and is not toxic.

If you are planning a modern kitchen floor design, then tiles are ideal for this purpose.

Has tiles and cons - laying is done on a previously prepared surface, and seams require special attention to themselves.

Cork

Modern interiors give you the opportunity to choose the best option for your home. Is it a good idea to use cork in the kitchen? Cork is warm, but very soft.

The material is not at all afraid of exposure to moisture, perfectly suppresses noise, the cost is acceptable.

But there are also disadvantages - the material is soft, and therefore low strength with a constant load of its kitchen furniture. The floor is not recoverable.

Parquet

When choosing a floor for the kitchen, it is important to remember about the parquet. Its boards are famous for their stability, and some tree species are specially treated with oils so that they are resistant to moisture.

Parquet can be made in any color and any size, and therefore, thinking over the design of the floor in the kitchen, it is not at all difficult to find the right color solution.

Porcelain stoneware

Artificial material, but very durable. The material is so durable that it easily withstands moisture and temperature changes.

Grease stains are not afraid of this coating.

The minus of the floor is that it is very cold, and therefore it is worth considering heating it. In addition, the floor is solid, and therefore the dishes are guaranteed to break if they fall.

Weak spot - seams. The seam must be of high quality, but you still need to be prepared for the fact that it will become unusable over time.

In the kitchen, it is better to lay tiles with a corrugated surface to prevent accidental falls.

Self-leveling floor

The attractive solution is that there are no seams, as well as a lot of unique patterns. Such a floor embodies any fantasy into reality. Have you seen a beautiful photo of the floor in the kitchen? Do you want this floor for yourself? So what's the problem? Choose a self-leveling floor and make all your ideas come true.

The base is exclusively natural material, for example, shell, stone, and all this can be decorated with leaves and flowers, and after all the materials have been laid, the floor is varnished.

You can use a 3D picture on the floor, thereby giving uniqueness to your floor and the kitchen as a whole.

Floor laying

Once the material has been chosen, it is worth thinking about its further installation. First of all, the old coating is dismantled and the base is cleaned. Next, the evenness of the floor surface is checked.

The floor is leveled with a screed, thus the surface will be additionally soundproofed.

Installation of linoleum

Installation of linoleum is easy. To work, you need a knife for cutting edges and for cutting, a ruler and several spatulas, one with teeth and one simple.

When marking, it is worth leaving 5 cm allowances along the edges in order to compensate for any mistakes when opening.

Linoleum is laid on the surface either by spreading or by gluing.

If the area is up to 20 m2, then you can simply spread the linoleum, cut it so that there is a gap between the wall and the coating, which is then closed with a plinth.

Linoleum is glued if the area is over 20 m2. Initially, a primer is applied to the surface of the linoleum from the inside and also to the base, so that there is better adhesion, and then, after a day, glue is applied. The canvas is laid on the floor with glue and then, as it should be leveled with a roller.

Kitchen floor - 95 photos of the most beautiful interior ideas of 2017

When choosing a floor covering, many factors should be considered. It should be universal - not be afraid of moisture, grease, easy to clean, not be a slippery floor. Consider which floor in the kitchen is better.

The floor design in the kitchen depends not only on the stylistic decision, but also on what kind of base is available, and what requirements will be for the new floor.

For example, if you want to install underfloor heating, you need to choose a material that is suitable for underfloor heating.

The floor, like the ceiling, serves as a background for the interior. Here you can experiment, create different options. For example, different tiles can separate the working and dining areas.

If the kitchen is small, choose plain tiles. Thus, visually expand the room. Consider the most popular types of flooring.

Contents of the article:

Linoleum

The most versatile coating, has a lot of advantages. The most important thing is the cost, it is very small, and the service life is great about 10 years. Possesses high resistance to various external factors.

Easy to clean and does not absorb moisture. You can mount it yourself, as it is so easy that even a person without experience can handle it.

The market offers a wide range of different colors to suit any style and interior design. For the kitchen, you should choose linoleum with a thick base.

Cork flooring

Such floors are in trend today for those who prefer natural materials. This coating is made from oak bark. From walking on such a floor, you feel pleasant sensations.

Cork floors are varnished, so they are moisture resistant and easy to clean. Suitable for absolutely any interior.

Wooden floor

Such floors have always been associated with luxury and wealth. Natural wood flooring is very expensive.

Designers advise against using this type of material when designing a kitchen floor.

Since the wood is not resistant to moisture, it requires special treatments. However, if you dream of a wooden floor in the kitchen, then put it in the dining area.

However, keep in mind that spilled coffee and wine can leave stains on the wood.

Laminate

This is a good replacement for a wooden floor. It is resistant to external factors. Manufacturers offer various colors and styles of this material. It can imitate a tree, or it can look like a tile.

Underfloor heating can be installed under it. The cost of laminate flooring is quite affordable. Its main drawback is that it is afraid of moisture.

Floor tiles

One of the most popular flooring is tiles. Stop the choice on ceramic tiles. Its price is small, versatile and easy to use. Fits into any style and interior.

Modern tiles are able to imitate any material. It is an environmentally friendly material. Resistant to all environmental factors. Not afraid of chemicals, moisture, easy to clean.

There are many ways to design kitchen floor tiles. Please note that this material is not suitable for underfloor heating. Also, the surface of the tile must be matte, otherwise you can get injured by slipping.

Porcelain stoneware

This type of flooring is ideal. It has high resistance, unlike tiles, it is not afraid of temperature changes.

This is an artificial floor covering that can look like any other material. Has two types of matte and polished surface.

For safety, choose a matte finish.

Liquid Linoleum

This flooring looks like regular linoleum and feels like tile. It is also called bulk floor.

One of the advantages of this floor is that it does not have any seams, but the dismantling of the coating is a rather complicated procedure.

Self-leveling floor in the kitchen can be made different in style.
