Close to the Ceiling Light Fixtures: Flush & Semi-Flush Mount Fixtures
Ceiling lights hang close to or against the ceiling. Because they provide ambient lighting, they are central to the overall illumination of a room and set the tone for distinguishing style. Available in both flush mounts that hug the ceiling directly and semi-flush fixtures, that drop down slightly to cast light across the ceiling, these valuable light fixtures hang 6” to 21” from the ceiling to allow for installation on lower 8’ to 9’ ceilings with ample feet of clearance below.
If you need a little inspiration to guide your browsing before you buy, we’ve curated some of our favorite ideas and advice in our ceiling light fixtures buying guide!
Types of Ceiling Lights
- Hanging: Light fixtures that hang from the ceiling, including chandeliers, pendants, and lanterns can be found in our Hanging Lights collection. Hanging lights create a striking visual effect and are often used for both decorative purposes, to make a bold design statement, and task lighting, to bring the light down to where you need it to complete specific tasks.
- Decorative: Just because flush and semi-flush fixtures sit closer to the ceiling does not mean they can’t have decorative purpose! Our selection of decorative ceiling light fixtures includes a wide variety of beautiful finishes, like metallic brass, nickel, chrome, antique gold, tin and copper as well as unique materials like driftwood, shells, chicken wire, bamboo, and painted colors.
- Shaded: To diffuse light from the ceiling and create a soft ambiance, shaded fixtures are a popular choice. Shaded options include elegant drum shades, silky sheer to burlap solids, and fun geometric prints, with glass choices from recycled bottle to sparkling crystal, art glass and colored Murano glass.
- Modern: Want to bring a contemporary edge to your lighting? Modern designs, include modern style elements like geometric open frames, mid-century globe shades, minimalist exposed bulbs, and more sleek fixtures with unexpected panache.
- Rustic: If you are updating lighting in a modern farmhouse or cottage design, consider fixtures on the rustic-to-industrial style spectrum, including metal mesh, engine fans, smoke bell lanterns, rustic twigs and antlers, vintage schoolhouse lights and our famous glass Moravian stars!
- Energy-Efficient LED: If an efficient-burning light with a long lifespan is top priority for you, consider choosing a fixture with built-in LEDs, or a fixture compatible with one of our LED bulbs. If the fixture includes LEDs already, that will be noted in the product name and description.
Lights for Any Room: Where to Replace Ceiling Light Fixtures First
Because close-to-ceiling lights are found in so many spaces throughout the home, it may be difficult to decide where to begin when replacing outdated or builder fixtures. Here are a few room ideas to get you started:
- Kitchen: Kitchen lighting design is all about balancing lighting layers, including ambient, task, and decorative lights. Flush or semi-flush fixtures can provide overhead illumination light over damp areas like a sink, where a hanging light might not be suitable, or add decorative appeal over a kitchen table.
- Living Room: A ceiling light can make a stunning centerpiece in a living room design. Check out our living room lighting guide for more ideas and advice, such as choosing a fixture for a room with high ceilings, sloped ceiling compatibility, and where to place your light in relation to living room furniture.
- Bedroom: There’s no better place to express your personal style than in your bedroom design. Whether your bedroom is a bright and airy space where you pass leisure time and recharge, or you prefer softer lighting to help you ease into the mornings and evenings, we recommend picking a bedroom light fixture that matches your energy and that you’ll love to look at each day.
- Dining Room: As a formal space for entertaining guests, the dining room is a place to incorporate a statement piece. Consider an oversized light that will capture attention as soon as you walk in, or opt for a sleek black ceiling light that will add an air of sophistication to your entertaining space.
- Home Office: With many of us working and studying from home more often these days, having adequate light can make a big difference in your level of focus, motivation, and productivity. Consider a stylish but serious finish, like glass or bronze, to give your study a professional feel.
- Kids Room: In a kids room, playroom, or nursery, a whimsical light can add to the fun! Consider a colorful fixture, shape, or shade motif, including floral designs, stars, and nautical ceiling lights such as ship lights, shells, and starfish.
- Hallway or Foyer: Overhead lighting in hallways and foyers is essential for safe movement throughout the home. For wider hallways and entryways, consider pairing a ceiling fixture with coordinating wall sconces to provide enough illumination.
When you are ready to replace an existing fixture, remember to consult a licensed electrician for installation. They will be able to advise on how to install it safely.

Top of PageHow to choose the power and number of recessed lights?
Recessed spotlights have many advantages over traditional lamps. They take up little space and do not hide space, they can be easily hidden in ceiling structures or even furniture, they allow you to create more diverse lighting, highlighting lighter or darker areas. However, with all its advantages, the installation of such equipment entails one problem - the need to accurately calculate the number of lamps and their power. Since recessed luminaires are not so easy to replace (especially hidden ones), all parameters must be calculated with high accuracy.
Room illumination standards
For residential and non-residential premises for various purposes, illumination standards per square meter have been developed. These standards apply to the installation of absolutely any equipment, conventional or LED.
A standard incandescent bulb is taken as the basis for calculating the light level. The average level of illumination for a residential area is about 20 watts per square meter. This means that when choosing fixtures, you should focus on the area of the room and the power of a particular lamp. For example, for a living room with an area of 12 square meters total lighting power must be 240 watts .
There are also recommendations for lighting in other rooms:
- Bedroom - 15 W/sq. m;
- Living room - 22 W / sq.m;
- Kitchen - 26 W/sq.m;
- Toilet (bathroom) - 20 W / sq.m;
- Corridor - 16 W / sq.m;
- Workplace - 60 W/sq.m.
The calculations themselves are quite simple, but one should take into account the fact that the power of incandescent lamps, LED and fluorescent lamps is very different! To accurately calculate the number of lamps of the required type, you can use summary tables (the ratio of an incandescent lamp of a certain power and an LED lamp) or use formulas.
Luminous flux (light intensity) is calculated in Lumens (lm). On average, one 20 W incandescent lamp gives a luminous flux of 250 Lm. This corresponds to one 5-6W fluorescent lamp or one 2-3W LED lamp.
20 W (incandescent) = 5-7 W (fluorescent) = 2-3 W (LED) = 250 lm.
In addition to the table, you can calculate the number of fixtures, focusing on Lux (Lx) - a unit that shows the ratio Lm / sq. m. For example, in our room of 12 meters there are 4 incandescent lamps with a power of 20 W (250 Lm). Let's calculate: 250*4 = 1000 Lm. 1000/12 = 83 Lux.
Lighting standards in Lux:
- Bedroom - 200-250 Lx;
- Living room - 300-400 Lx;
- Kitchen - 200-250 Lx;
- Bathroom (toilet) - 200-250 Lx;
- Corridor - 80-100 Lx.
It turns out that 4 incandescent lamps with a power of 20 W are not enough for a room of 12 square meters. They can be replaced with 4 lamps with a power of 60 W or 4 LEDs with a power of 15-16 W.
If you find it difficult to make calculations yourself, use the help of ready-made tables or online calculators.
Additional calculation parameters for LED luminaires
When installing LED recessed luminaires, not only lighting standards and norms should be taken into account, but also the fact that the light of LEDs differs from that of traditional incandescent lamps. As a rule, the light from standard LEDs is brighter, so you need to choose the minimum possible number of fixtures.
A lot also depends on the height of the ceilings and the geometry of the rooms. If the ceilings in your apartment are higher than 3 meters, then all the resulting numbers must be increased by 1.5 times to get the desired level of illumination. In addition, recessed luminaires must be selected based on the purpose of not only the entire room, but also a specific zone. For the bedroom, lamps with a neutral or warm glow are suitable, for the work area - with white cold light. Unlike traditional incandescent lamps, the color of the glow of LEDs plays a huge role in the selection of the number of fixtures.
Calculating the wattage of recessed luminaires can be quite complex, so EF-LIGHT recommends using special tables for a particular type of luminaire or enlisting the help of a lighting professional.

Cozy lighting design for apartments and houses
A variety of wall and ceiling spots, floor lamps and table lamps of various materials and shapes is presented in the Baucenter online store and building hypermarkets. Crystal hanging chandeliers are designed for the living room, elegant sconces and spotlights for false ceilings will come in handy in the bedroom and hallway, and LED lighting, which is popular today, is more often used in the kitchen and bathroom.
Choosing the most suitable model is not an easy task that requires weighing a number of features and nuances. First of all, the area of the room and the height of the walls affect the illumination, therefore, by installing a large chandelier in a room with low ceilings, you can visually reduce the space and block traffic. In such a situation, it is best to stop at the choice of directional ceiling or spotlights. They look very aesthetically pleasing and practically do not take up space. Try to decide in advance on the number of shades, maximum power and type of base. These factors affect the overall brightness and comfortable atmosphere in the room. Too bright light contributes to rapid eye fatigue, and dim light will cause drowsiness at times when you need to concentrate on a particular job.
Industrial and street lighting
Baucenter, a chain of stores for repair goods, offers customers a variety of topical solutions for organizing the lighting of offices, production workshops and trading floors: diode panels, fluorescent and halogen lamps, spotlights and emergency illumination.
