11 Built-in Kitchen Bench Ideas to Make Your Kitchen Feel Larger
As a central gathering place in almost any home, it’s important for a kitchen to feel spacious and provide ample room for seating. But what if your kitchen simply can’t fit a large table and chairs? Consider a kitchen bench! Banquettes, as they are sometimes called, take up considerably less floor space without chair legs.
While you may hear “built-in kitchen bench” and picture farmhouse decor, I think you know that I would find ideas to make this space-saving design choice elegant and classy! I’ve gathered some of my favorite built-in kitchen bench ideas to save space and have you wishing there were more guests in your home!

Corner Seating Ideas
Grab the corner booth! By building a banquette into a corner, you’re adding additional seating without taking up precious floor space. A corner lined with windows creates a warm and inviting place to gather. The natural light also adds an airiness that can make the room feel larger. If you need to add additional seating, simply place a chair or two at the open table space.
Built-In Kitchen Benches with Storage
Not only will your kitchen feel larger with a built-in bench, you can also really increase your kitchen storage if you’re smart about it! Put a hinge on the seats themselves and boom, instant storage. If you can’t install hinges, hang coordinating fabric to create a curtain. Then store items in baskets or bins under the bench for easy access.
This is a great place to store items you don’t use often, like specialty appliances or seasonal table linens. But be careful to not store items you’ll use often in the very corner. That’s just not practical.

Neutral Benches for Smaller Spaces
One of my favorite tips for any small space is to keep colors neutral and light. This is absolutely true in the kitchen, too! To let go of some of the visual weight, keep your bench seating and the table neutral. A slight pattern in the upholstery is okay, but for the most part you want to stay away from anything that might draw the eye or feel too heavy. A neutral color palette also goes with any interior design style, making it a universal good choice.

Colorful Bench Ideas
Though the bench is a space-saver, it still takes up a significant portion of your kitchen. It’s valuable real estate, so make it “worth it” by turning your banquette seating into a statement piece. Use a bold fabric or leather or paint your bench an unconventional color – whatever will help your banquette to stand out while still fitting with the décor in your kitchen and home. If you need some guidance on statement pieces, check out these 7 rules I’ve pulled together!

Tables For Built-In Benches
If the point of using a bench is to save space in your kitchen, make sure the table is saving space too! A circular table has a smaller footprint than one with corners. Think about it – those corners are mostly wasted space anyways! Especially if your banquette space is already small, a table with a smaller footprint is the way to go. A circular table is especially helpful in a corner banquette, because they are much easier to get around into the corner.

Breakfast Nook Seating
A bump out can add valuable square footage to your home, but sometimes the proportions that make sense for one room simply don’t make sense on another floor. This is often the case with kitchens (and how breakfast nooks became so popular).
If the bump out isn’t the right space for countertops and you want to keep the natural light the windows provide, make it functional by installing bench seating on either side. Suddenly a space that’s too awkward for chairs or cabinets has a purpose.

Lighten Up with a “Floating” Bench
Another way to save space and look sleek at the same time is with a floating bench. These are built right into the wall without legs or visible supports. The lack of supports and bulky bases makes this a highly adaptable solution that can be customized and styled to match any interior design style. An added benefit of the floating bench: you’ve never found an easier chair to sweep under!

Think Vertically with Shelves
If you can’t put storage below your bench seating, why not put it above? Floating shelves are a great way to achieve multiple goals around your banquette: provide storage, keep things light, and of course make it functional. This is a useful place to display beautiful cookware or serving platters that you don’t use every day, but that deserve to be shown off instead of hidden in a pantry somewhere.

In an era long dominated by the kitchen island, built-in banquettes have taken a back seat. But interior designers and homeowners are rediscovering the appeal of those chair-height, often upholstered benches that anchor the seating areas of kitchens, dining rooms, and open-plan spaces. Banquettes share DNA with window seats which are found in every room of the house, and banquette seating without a table in front of it often appears in mudrooms and entryways as a place to pause and slip off your shoes or rest your belongings.
A popular space-saving solution in the midcentury modern interiors of the last century, built-in banquettes never really went out of style. Long a fixture in tight city apartments and eat-in kitchens in older homes where a central island with bar stool seating would be cramped or impossible, these days the banquette is finding its way into larger, open plan spaces as a replacement for or alongside a kitchen island.
The shape of a banquette can be adapted to suit the layout of your kitchen or dining room, and may run along a single wall or occupy an L-shaped corner or a U-shaped alcove. You can use a banquette to help define a seating area in an open-plan space, or custom build a banquette that follows the irregular angles of an older home. Adding a built-in banquette can range from a straightforward DIY to a more elaborate tailor-built job for a professional carpenter. Banquettes are usually made of a wood base that may include integrated or free-form upholstery in leather or fabric (choose an outdoor fabric if you’re worried about wear and tear) and may include under-bench storage.
These ideas for built-in banquette seating will show you how to turn your kitchen into a cafe, your dining room into a bistro, and your home into a cozier, comfier space for meals, coffee breaks, or working from home. If you live in a rental or don't have the means to add a built-in banquette, there are plenty of options out there for freestanding banquettes in a range of materials, styles, and colors that can mimic the look.

- 50 stylish kitchen bench designs:
Benefits of kitchen benches:
- Large space. The choice of furniture in the dining room most often falls on the benches due to the increase in space. Unlike chairs, benches are a kind of sofas that do not share seats between each other, which allows more people to fit at the table.
- Comfort. Most sofa benches for the kitchen are overlaid with a leather, fabric surface, which provides guests with a comfortable and cozy pastime, unlike solid wooden chairs. Also, in comparison with stools, the bench in the kitchen has a railing and a back wall, which is quite comfortable when sitting. nine0093
- Shop functionality. Most models can be put into sleep mode by unfolding them. This is quite convenient when installing benches in small apartments or with frequent visits by guests. Some models are equipped with a storage slot that can be opened by simply lifting the seat. This feature is quite convenient, as it allows you to significantly save kitchen space.
The bench is a popular piece of kitchen furniture and is a great alternative to chairs and stools. nine0003
Despite all the advantages, kitchen benches are not without drawbacks:
- Size. This disadvantage stands out when choosing furniture for a miniature room, since these benches provide for a fairly large space underneath. For such cases, there are small compact models that fit in any room. For a small area, corner and functional benches are great.
- Inconvenience when cleaning. When washing floors, you will need to move the seats. The benches are heavy in weight, which can be a disadvantage when cleaning. In the case of impregnated fabrics, dripping on them can also cause inconvenience. nine0093
- Other inconveniences. With a large number of people sitting in the middle, it is quite inconvenient to go out. This minus is insignificant, but it is also worth considering.
The high popularity of benches is due to their versatility, a wide range of models on the market and the optimal combination of appearance, practicality and comfort.
Bench options
Simple bench
This type is a simple but budget option. Despite being made from materials as simple as chipboard (chipboard) or MDF, the bench maintains quality and complements any rustic and sometimes country style. nine0003
The kitchen bench is a piece of furniture with a long seat, designed to accommodate several people at the kitchen table.
Upholstered bench
The upholstered kitchen bench, unlike other options, provides the highest comfort and convenience when sitting. As a rule, these benches are pleasant to the touch and, depending on the material, last for a long time. Most often, the upholstery is made of leather material or fabric.
According to its location, the bench can be located on one side of the dining table or clasp it on both sides.
Corner benches
Corner benches for the kitchen save a lot of space, unlike straight ones, located in the corner of the room and are often purchased by owners of miniature kitchens. Usually, due to this placement, more people are placed at the table.
Both benches and benches can be made in both soft and hard versions and have different seat depths and heights. nine0003
Model with drawer
The kitchen bench with drawer is a good option with which residents can save space at home by putting all the contents there. This type is more expensive, but absolutely justifies its price. Owners of miniature apartments will also like a kitchen bench with a drawer in the kitchen.
Kitchen benches can also be of any size.
Sleeper
This type of furniture is suitable for frequent guests or small studio apartments. With a lack of sleeping places in the apartment, sofas with a berth are an excellent option. nine0003
This furniture is ideal for large kitchens.
This plus is also important, the price will be more expensive than other types.
Bench upholstery types
The following materials can be used as upholstery material.
- Leather. It is in demand, but at hot temperatures it can stick to the body and create an unpleasant effect. This disadvantage should be considered when buying.
Genuine leather is a durable, harmless and stylish material. nine0003
- Leatherette. It has a skin-like effect, but is in demand. These two types are the most popular.
Outwardly, it is very similar to leather, it looks expensive, beautiful, and the price is much cheaper.
- Eco leather. Possesses high wear resistance and frost resistance.
Eco-friendly upholstery in pressed leather and synthetic materials.
- Impregnated fabrics.
Sofas with impregnation can be subjected to wet cleaning.
Drops of food and drinks remain on the surface of the fabric. Despite the fact that the fabric can be washed, this drawback should be taken into account when choosing.
Vandal resistant versions are very popular.
It is worth considering that designers provide a variety of patterns and colors.
The new accessory must match perfectly with your kitchen decor.
Frame material
Considerable attention when choosing a kitchen sofa bench is given to the frame itself. In most cases, the material is wood: chipboard (chipboard) or MDF (medium density fibreboard). Wood-framed benches are often better made and look neater. Metal can also be used as a frame material.
The material is distinguished by good quality, environmental friendliness, strength and a guarantee of a long service life of the furniture.
How to choose a corner bench for a small kitchen
Corner pieces of furniture are the best option for miniature rooms due to their location, and their appearance looks more expressive than benches standing alone.
Classic furniture - versatile.
When choosing, consider the following parameters:
- Model design. When choosing between simple and designs with drawers / beds and other additional features, most people choose more complex models, however, when choosing a bench with a complex design, it is not always easy to find a beautiful design. nine0093
Kitchen accessory will easily fit into any design. It is enough to choose a sofa that matches the color and size.
- Appearance. The interior should be chosen according to the chosen style of your kitchen. Designers have created a large number of options for any style. Wooden benches are great for rustic or country-style kitchens, while painted whites go well with Provence-style rooms.
Bring your sofa to life with bright accessories such as a cover and cushions. nine0003
- Filler. In the case of upholstery, it is desirable to take into account the filler. Often it is foam rubber or polyurethane foam. When choosing a high-quality filler, the upholstery will instantly restore its position. Higher quality filler is higher in price.
Sofas made in the Scandinavian style, laconic and simple form, no frills, often plain, but the most comfortable to use.
- Size. As mentioned earlier, the bench should be selected, given the size of the room. Corner benches are great for small dining rooms. Kitchen benches with drawers are also well suited for a small room. nine0093
Lovely sofa bench with storage space, elegant high backrest and upholstered seats.
Please note! Corner benches most often fold out into a full bed. When choosing, you should also pay attention to the mechanism. In most cases, the most convenient is the extension of an additional element from under the larger side of the bench.
Originality, practicality and comfort in use are the main requirements for furniture design of a modern business person. nine0003
When choosing tables and benches, you should take into account many factors and adapt to the parameters of your kitchen. In addition to the actual characteristics, the bench should harmoniously fit into the room, create a pleasant and comfortable impression, and with the right choice, this furniture can serve your home for many years.
Sofas are made from materials that are light, non-staining, environmentally friendly and easy to care for.
