Ideas for wall above shower

What to Do With the Wall Above the Shower Surround? | Home Guides

By Carlye Jones

The blank walls above a shower surround present a decorating dilemma: should they blend in or stand out? The answer depends on the final look you want in your bathroom and whether you want to highlight the shower enclosure or the walls. You'll want to highlight the former if it has custom or decorative tile, and the latter to distract from a plain or inexpensive shower surround.

Tile It Up

  1. Add a few rows of decorative tile above the surround to extend it all the way to the ceiling. The tile can either match the surround to blend in and make the entire unit look larger, or it can be a decorative border that coordinates with the decor in your bathroom. Choose tiles that are water-resistant, such as stone or ceramic. Avoid clay tiles, which can absorb moisture. Seal the grout so that it is easy to clean and is not damaged by humidity and moisture.

Waterproof Art

  1. Any sort of artwork that won't be damaged by humidity can be hung above the shower surround to create an inviting atmosphere. For example, hand-painted tiles can be hung individually by attaching picture hangers to the back with epoxy-based glue, or by using small plate hangers. Spray metal wall sculptures with clear polyurethane to protect against rust. Use vinyl wall-art decals to create silhouettes or spell out your favorite quote.

Touch of Paint

  1. Paint the wall the same color as the surround to blend the two together and make the shower enclosure look larger, or use a complementary color to highlight the shower. For example, if you used a beautiful dark stone tile in the surround, choose a light paint color that matches the veining in the stone to make the accent tile in the shower stand out. Use paint to create patterns above the surround, such as stripes or diamond shapes. You can continue the pattern all the way around the room to create a hand-painted border.

Simple Shelves

  1. Mount narrow ceramic or water-resistant shelves just above the surround and fill the shelves with decorations that complement your bathroom. For example, small tropical plants, vintage bottles and jars, stone carvings and sealed metal sculptures can be used to add visual interest. Secure the objects with removable double-sided tape or art putty so that they can't accidentally be knocked down into the shower.

Raise a Panel

  1. Decorative panels intended for use as backsplashes on kitchen and bathroom sinks can be installed above the shower surround. Raised decorative metal panels that are designed to look like antique tin squares create a vintage look, while sleek, brushed nickel gives a modern, elegant look. Backsplash panels are even available in unusual finishes, such as automotive diamond plating or copper octagons.

How to Protect the Wall Above the Shower Walls | Home Guides

By SF Gate Contributor Updated March 30, 2021

Tile showers often cover the surrounding wall all the way to the ceiling if there is only a short space between the top of the showerhead and the last full row of tiles above it. Prefabricated showers, however, have a defined top edge where they finish, with no shower wall protector above them. This leaves a gap of exposed wall from the top of the prefab edge to the ceiling. While water splash-back isn’t an issue at that height, humidity and condensation are, and you should protect the wall in some way against eventual moisture damage.

Cover Walls with Wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is a solid finish material you can use in areas with moisture. It would not hold up to a constant stream of water from the showerhead like tile or plastic panel walls. But it will repel condensation and keep the humidity from damaging the wall beneath it.

You can use a small-notched trowel to apply the wallpaper paste or use pre-pasted vinyl. Cut the pieces to fit, press them into place and smooth them down with a plastic wallpaper smoothing tool.

Use Moisture-Resistant Paint

You can apply moisture-resistant paint with a brush or a roller in the space above the shower panels. Although it costs more money, Bob Vila recommends using paint that has an anti-microbial/anti-fungal additive to prevent mold in humid areas. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of coats you need to apply and the recommended paint drying time before using the shower.

Tile to Protect the Walls

Just as you can use tile inside the shower itself, you can finish the wall above it with ceramic tile. Using subway tile above shower inserts adds a different look than traditional tile because of its smaller size. According to HGTV, subway tiles come in different sizes, although they traditionally measure 3 inches by 6 inches.

First, cover the drywall in a layer of paint-on waterproofing that you can apply with a paintbrush. Once this dries, you can use a notched trowel and mastic adhesive to mount the tiles. You can use thin-set mortar to set the tiles, but for an out-of-the-way area such as this, you can use mastic adhesive for less mess and no mixing time.

Use spacers for grout joints. After grouting the installation, seal the joints to protect the walls fully. Also, seal the tiles if they are natural stone. Leave at least 1/8-inch joints on top of the shower panel and against the ceiling for expansion, and caulk these joints instead of grouting them.

Apply Cultured Marble

Cultured marble is a quick and easy-to-install solution. You can cut the pieces with a circular saw. Apply them in a bed of mastic adhesive or construction adhesive, just like the tiles. Use shims to hold the pieces in place while they dry. Include expansion joints at the inside corners, against the ceiling, and at the top of the shower panels, and caulk the expansion joints after the marble has dried in place.

The bathroom needs to be kept as functional as possible and to make the most of a small space. At the same time, it is important not to forget about the interior. Here are ten useful and effective bathroom decor ideas

Our day begins and ends in the bathroom, where we spend a lot of time. Making the bathroom not only comfortable, but also beautiful is not an easy task, although it is doable. We have collected interesting tips and solutions, from the simplest to the more complex.

Top 5 bathroom finishes

Found a solution to the problem of the gap between the bathtub and the wall

An interesting washbasin design is the most obvious way to make your bathroom interior stylish and cozy. When choosing a sink, try to move away from the template and pay attention to unusual options. It can be either round, resembling a bowl, or square, strict geometric shape.

Think about non-standard solutions in the choice of material - it does not have to be the usual ceramics, metal sinks for high-tech interiors and even crystal for art deco style are no less practical. A lot depends on the placement of the sink - it can be built into a marble countertop or, for example, placed on a wooden cabinet with drawers and niches.

With the help of mirrors, even the most modest space can shine in a new light without major repairs. We offer some simple solutions: hang two mirrors symmetrically above the sink at once, or choose two mirrors of different sizes.

By the way, this is very convenient when two people use the bathroom at the same time. Much depends on the frame - the tree will give coziness and a feeling of closeness to nature, and the mirror mosaic will look elegant and give beautiful highlights when the lamps are on.

We often pay too little attention to lighting in the bathroom. As a rule, only one boring ceiling lamp is used as a light source, or at best several standard lamps in the ceiling.

In fact, you can play with the lighting in the bathroom, just like in other rooms of the apartment or house. If space allows, you can even fit a crystal chandelier into the interior! And fans of minimalism are advised to pay attention to hanging ceiling lamps-cylinders, which are most conveniently placed next to the mirror.

Our opinion:

— Subdued light in the bathroom looks great only in the photo, but in practice it is better to make the lighting quite bright, otherwise the presence of a mirror will simply lose its meaning. But the ideal option is a dimmer switch that controls the intensity of light. So you can take a bath with minimal light, and brighten the light when you need to apply makeup in front of the mirror.

Another simple and inexpensive option is to think about the position of the towels and the design of the holders. Agree, the usual hooks are already tired. Towels can be placed on a narrow open rack that can fit into even the smallest bathroom. Or equip special hanging baskets in which you can store other necessary things.

If you want to optimize the space as much as possible, even the hooks can be made original, for example, placed on a wooden panel, reminiscent of an entrance hall.

When planning a bathroom renovation, keep in mind that tiles will form the basis for your interior. To make the space bright and cheerful, choose the appropriate materials. Ornaments and patterns are in fashion now, as well as tiles that look like mosaics and tiles. Tiles of a small size will look great, and there is no need to be afraid of bold color schemes. Still, the bathroom is the first room in the house from which our day begins, and it simply has to cheer you up!

Our opinion:

— For some, the option of bright tiles on the walls may seem too radical. If you are afraid that the pattern will quickly get bored, focus on the floor. Here you can definitely give free rein to your imagination - the combination of plain walls and a floor with an ornament in the bathroom looks fresh.

If you decide to replace the bath with a shower, get creative. Instead of installing a standard cabin, save space by enclosing the shower with floor-to-ceiling glass, as shown in the photo. This decision will make the bathroom visually larger. Glass can also be replaced with hinged doors, and wooden beams can be laid on the floor over the tiles - it is more pleasant and warmer to stand on them.

A niche is not only a stylish element of decor, but also an opportunity to maximize the use of storage space. Make small niches in the wall and highlight them with tiles of a different color. Niches are also very functional inside the shower cabin - they can be made of the same tiles as the walls, and inside them it is convenient to store shower cosmetics. Even if the walls in your bathroom are not too wide, a niche can be made shallow, it will still become a noticeable accent in the interior.

Various flower pots can transform the look of your bathroom. One has only to add a little greenery to the interior, as it will already seem “alive” and environmentally friendly. If the bathroom has a window, you can place plants in pots, but if the room is dark (as is the case in most Russian apartments), use dried flower arrangements or even artificial options - the main thing is that they should be as natural as possible.
