How to spring clean your bedroom

How to Spring Clean Your Bedroom

Spring is well underway, the sun has started coming out, Mrs Hinch is booming on Instagram, and more and more of us are starting our spring cleaning routines!

Spring cleaning is a great way to refresh your home, mind and lifestyle before the sunny summer season of 2020 begins here in the UK. As homeowners everywhere get out their feather dusters and search for the newest range of cleaning products, we’re here to provide you with the best tips for a hygienic home.

The bedroom is a great place to start and certainly shouldn’t be neglected. But what should we be doing?

Declutter

The first thing you need to do is have a good declutter. Collect up all the things that don’t belong in your bedroom and return them to their rightful home or get rid of them. Collect any rubbish that may have accumulated and discard too.

Spring is a great time to reassess your wardrobe. Go through all your clothes and set aside anything you no longer wear, anything that has worn out, anything that can’t be repaired and anything that no longer fits. Your local charity or community shop will kindly take them off your hands.

If the weather has already changed, you may want to rotate your wardrobe by packing up your winter clothes for storage and getting your summer wardrobe out instead. Make sure the winter clothes are stored away safely to protect them from damage.

You might also want to check any under-bed storage that you have. Can anything be thrown away or donated?

Clean All Surfaces

Next up, you want to dust and clean down all the surfaces in the bedroom. It’s best to start up high so you don’t just spread dust around. Start with the ceiling by using a long handled duster to remove cobwebs and make sure you get into all the corners. Don’t forget any ceiling lights, remove and dust lampshades and wipe downlight bulbs with glass cleaner.

Next remove any photographs or artwork from the walls. Give them a dust with a dry microfiber cloth and clean the glass in any frames with glass cleaner. Wash the walls down and remove any stains or marks. Touch up paint where necessary and once dry you can rehang the pictures.

Clean the inside of the windows as well as all the mirrors using glass cleaner on a clean microfiber cloth.

Finally, wipe down your skirting boards where dust tends to collect.

Spring Clean Carpets, Rugs and Floors

It’s now time to give the room a good vacuum. Move furniture if possible and vacuum underneath and behind it.

If you have wooden floors give them a mop with a microfiber mop and a ph-balanced floor cleaner, specially designed for cleaning wooden floors.

If you have carpet now is the time to give it a clean. As, although they may appear clean on the surface, carpets and rugs harbour lots of bacteria from being walked over day-in-day-out. Many ignore the depths of a carpet with the same ‘out of sight out of mind’ concept and live blissfully unaware of the germs developing in their carpets and rugs.

It may seem like a huge effort, but washing carpets and rugs regularly doesn’t have to be a laborious task.

You can hire carpet cleaning machines reasonably cheaply or you can get a professional carpet cleaning company in to do the job for you. Alternatively, adding a carpet-specific anti-bacterial to your hovering routine will rid of any pesky germs and add an extra touch of clean to your carpets! Carpet sprays are really popular right now, spritz on and it kills bacteria and leaves your room smelling fresh! Best of all, no need to vaccum away.  For smaller rugs, a quick wash cycle will destroy any bacteria and bring your rugs up like new.

Clean Curtains and Blinds

If you have Venetian blinds, make sure you give them a good dust and wipe them down with warm water. For any other type of blinds or curtains, you can give them a good hoover. Or, depending on the material, you may be able to wash them in your washing machine on the delicate cycle.

Clean Upholstered Furniture

Throughout a cleaning routine, we tend to wet wipe down hard surfaces like they’re going out of fashion, yet we tend to neglect our upholstered furniture. Sofas, beds, curtains and all soft furnishings in our home gather lots of dust and are potentially the most used items within the home – so why do we forget about them?

A clear answer for this is that many people feel confused about how exactly to clean upholstered furniture and soft surfaces, so tend to avoid doing so. Not to worry though, we’re here to help.

There is a wide range of fabric cleaning products such as stain remover sprays, soft clothes and quick-drying anti-bacterial spray designed specifically for your upholstered beds and soft furnishings. Be sure not to over-saturate the fabric to ensure quick-drying and no damage comes to your belongings.

Clean or Replace the Mattress and Bedding

You will need to totally strip your bed and get rid of any old bed linen that is past its prime (this includes duvets, pillows, mattress protectors and throws). Give everything a good wash and make sure it is thoroughly dry before replacing.

The Sleep Council recommends changing your mattress every seven years. So, if you’ve had yours longer than that, it’s time to get rid. Investing in a new mattress should definitely be a priority. Check out our range of mattresses for an affordable option - we particularly love this pocket sprung mattress!

If your mattress is relatively new, it may just need a good clean. Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum to give it a good hoover remembering to do the sides as well, and then to flip it over and do the underside.

To give your mattress a deep clean, add a few drops of essential oil such as soothing lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, or ylang ylang to some bicarbonate of soda. Sprinkle this all over the mattress and leave for one hour. Then vacuum the mattress again.

Open Windows to Air Out the House

Finally, open the windows and make sure you give the room a good airing. It'll work wonders, leaving your bedroom feeling much fresher.

Bedroom Spring Cleaning Checklist | Housewife How-Tos

There’s no need to dread Spring Cleaning your bedroom when you use this checklist that divides it into manageable sections so you can work at your own pace.

Bedroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

Whether you Spring clean your bedroom or not is entirely up to you. Some people enjoy doing it so they know they’ve deep-cleaned every surface, and others do it to minimize allergies. Some people don’t bother with it at all.

If you choose to Spring Clean your bedroom – regardless of the time of year — there’s no reason you have to do it all in one day. I’ve divided the process into sections to help you break it down into manageable steps if you need to. Cross off items as you go so you know what you’ve finished and what’s left to do.

Step 1. Gather Your Materials

Step 2. Clear the Clutter

Get started with the basic tasks for a daily bedroom tidy by putting dirty clothes in the hamper and putting away things on your nightstand and dresser, but don’t bother making the bed.

Then, grab a box and collect everything that doesn’t belong in your bedroom. Don’t get distracted by doing anything with it right now — just set it aside. In another box or bag, gather things you no longer want to keep and put them aside to donate. You might want to label the boxes, so you don’t get them confused. Finally, pick up all trash, including any under the bed, nightstand, or dresser, and put it in the garbage bag. Toss it out.

Step 3. Clear the Walls

Remove your window treatments and wash your curtains. Strip the bed of all linens, including pillows, but not the mattress cover yet. Then remove pictures and artwork from the walls, so they aren’t in your way for the next step. Set them on the bed for now.

Step 4. Get Dusting

When dusting, it’s best to work from top to bottom, left to right. This way, you’re not scattering dust over surfaces you’ve already cleaned. You may find it easiest to use a long-handled duster for tall things. (Here’s the one I use.) For items within reach, use a damp microfiber cloth and rinse it often.

Step 5. Clean Glass Items

Spray glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth and polish the fronts of pictures, then rehang them. Use the glass cleaner and fresh cloths to clean the mirrors, inside of windows, and other glass surfaces. Remember, using a damp or grimy cloth to polish glass surfaces leaves streaks, so switch to a clean one as needed.

Step 6. Clean the Lamps

Turn off any lamps in your room to give them time to cool down. Remove their shades, and wipe the cool bulbs with glass cleaner and a fresh cloth. Once the bulbs are clean, wipe the lamp base and cord. A lint roller will get most dust off of the lampshade, though you can also clean your lampshades more thoroughly if they’re smudged or dirty.

Step 7. Clean the Bed

Remove the mattress cover and take it to the laundry room. Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the bed frame, then vacuum the mattress with the upholstery attachment. Remove any mattress stains you find, then rotate the mattress end to end. Use the floor attachment and vacuum under the bed. Go ahead and launder your comforter or duvet now, too. You can even wash electric blankets.

Step 8. Finish the Floor

Move furniture if you can to vacuum beneath and behind it. Otherwise, use the crevice attachment to go around the base of your walls and furniture you can’t move. Switch to the floor attachment and vacuum the rest of the floor. If you have hardwood floors, mop them with this homemade floor cleaner to eliminate grime. For those with area rugs or carpeting, treat carpet stains. If you have a carpet shampooer, this is a good time to steam clean your carpet, too.

Step 9. Final Touches

Finish your bedroom Spring Cleaning by rehanging the curtains, then make the bed with a freshly laundered mattress pad and clean linens. Now’s the time to deal with the boxes of stuff you’d put aside: take the donation box to your car, dump out the trash, and put away items that belong in other rooms.

Spring cleaning of the house and apartment - a detailed plan and checklist

Spring is already on the nose, but is there still a Christmas tree skeleton at home? Time for cleaning! But it's not just the tree or the general mess. Spring cleaning is associated with the change of seasons. As the climate changes, so does our need for certain things.

This happens imperceptibly, but it has a great effect on your feeling and comfort in the house: it is already sunny outside, and at home dust settles on winter boots, which seem to be no longer needed, but for some reason are still standing in the hallway. The cycling season is about to begin, and there is a lone snowboard in the corner of the house. Why is it all? To decluttering, sorting and spring cleaning! nine0003

In this article we will tell you how to start spring cleaning, how to do it correctly, how to motivate yourself to declutter your house, get rid of excess and bring a truly spring comfort.

Contents of the article:
  1. Where to start
  2. Prepare cleaning supplies and supplies
  3. Prepare rooms by clearing out all unnecessary items
  4. Spring cleaning sequence
  5. Spring cleaning tips
  6. Where to put winter things
  7. How things are stored in the Attic
  8. Spring Cleaning Quick Checklist

Where to start

From the plan. As with any important undertaking, it all starts with a step-by-step list of actions. So you will understand the amount of work, the time that you will need to complete them and will be able to evenly distribute your forces.

Here is a rough plan of things to do during spring cleaning:

Most importantly, do not enter very small items that can confuse and demotivate you. Think in blocks: for example, for the kitchen there is a separate block of tasks, for the bedroom - another, for the balcony, pantry and mezzanines - the third.

Useful hacks: most often some things can be conveniently combined in time, for example, apply the cleaner on the tiled walls in the bathroom and the bath itself, and while it starts to work, remove the curtains and load them into the washing machine. While the laundry is being washed, you can declutter the balcony and install a dryer there - when the machine finishes washing, you hang out the laundry. Look for work you can do in parallel to save time! nine0003

Prepare your cleaning supplies and cleaning supplies

Once you have a plan, you need to prepare and, if necessary, purchase all the necessary cleaning supplies and cleaning supplies. You will need:

Also useful for packaging and storage:

Nothing should get in the way of the right mood for spring cleaning! The less often you stop in search of a napkin, a floor cloth, a cleaning cloth or a carpet brush, the better the cleaning will go.

Prepare the rooms by removing all unnecessary

This is the moment of truth - decluttering. Do not be afraid to get everything out of the closets to find "traitors" - those things that are broken, disliked or simply no longer needed. They only take up precious space, but do not bring you any benefit or joy. nine0003

Items you don't need can be given to friends, donated to a thrift store or sold online. Broken items should be thrown away. And those things that are needed, but not relevant for the season, or you store them for the sake of memory or for growth, it is best to hand them over to a storage service.

Spring cleaning sequence

So, let's get started:

  1. The first step is to declutter - get rid of trash and unnecessary things.
  2. Then we sort the necessary things on the shelves. nine0014
  3. Unnecessary things need to be packed and signed - we put them aside for now.
  4. After that we take care of the windows: remove the curtains and throw them in the wash, then wash them (water + vinegar work magic). When you see the result, you will feel a real surge of energy and want the whole apartment to shine like that!
  5. In parallel with the windows, it is worth taking care of the balcony, if there is one, it must be cleaned of rubbish and washed.
  6. When the windows are ready, the curtains are washed in the washing machine, the chandeliers, walls and doors need to be taken care of. nine0014
  7. Now you obviously need a little rest - a cup of tea, half an hour on the couch and then - into battle!
  8. We return to the bathroom, take out the curtains, hang them on the dryer and wash the walls (tiles), clean the bath itself, the mirror and the shelves.
  9. Next on the plan is the kitchen - we collect all the dust from the tops of the kitchen set, soak the refrigerator shelves in the sink, wipe the cabinet shelves and the refrigerator itself.
  10. The hallway is already waiting in the wings - only actual shoes should be left on the floor (or better yet, keep them in a shoe rack), and only the necessary clothes should be on hangers. nine0014
  11. As a result, the hall and the bedroom remain at the finish line.

Tips for Spring Cleaning

Start cleaning the room you hate so you can deal with it right away and start working in an easier and more pleasant atmosphere. Your hotspot might be your balcony or bathtub, so deal with that first! We figured it out, rested, turned on our favorite track and move on to something simpler - for example, sorting your favorite clothes in closets or sorting out shoes. Constantly look at the plan so as not to be distracted and put your phone away. Put on your favorite music, light some nice incense, choose nice clothes for cleaning (like a bright T-shirt, fun flowered rubber gloves - all this really cheers you up). nine0003

Where to put your winter things

You can safely determine the climate you live in by the filling of your apartment. Just look around: half the closet is occupied by sweaters and down jackets, the mezzanines are full of sleds and cheesecakes, grandfather's skis are still on the balcony, and a set of car summer tires is gathering dust in the hallway. If you look into the pantry, then there, probably, a couple of felt boots were lying around, well, or in extreme cases, ugg! The harsh winter in Russia forces us to store a bunch of winter things at home: from sports equipment to clothes and shoes. But you will not need these things 100% in spring, summer and autumn. nine0003

Winter clothes, shoes, skis, sticks, snowboards, sleds, tubing and ice cubes, ice skates - with the beginning of spring, all this can and should be put away for storage. But where? There are several options:

  1. Garage: things will be safe - you can store them as long as you need, but if the garage is not heated, then be careful - pack your things so that they do not deteriorate in the spring and autumn dampness and cold.
  2. Dacha: you can take an unlimited number of things there for a long time, but you have to invest in transportation outside the city. And the same problems may arise as in the case of a garage if the cottage is not heated. nine0014
  3. Country house: a good option so that things do not interfere with you in a city apartment, but you have to set aside a whole day for transportation. And the same problems with storing things are possible if the house is also suddenly not heated.
  4. Box or cell: excellent storage conditions, but you will have to pack and transport things yourself. And then come back for them.
  5. Shipping container: you will have personal access to your belongings at all times, but the containers are not always ventilated and heated (things can deteriorate in wet weather). nine0014
  6. The best option is to hand over all winter clothes to a special warm warehouse - to the Attic! Any winter things are stored in the Attic warehouse, regardless of their volume and dimensions. You can donate a box of skates to us, as well as a whole set of winter sports equipment, as well as all winter clothes and shoes.

How things are stored in the Attic

Everything is as simple as possible: first you write to us that you want to deposit things and describe how much things are. We indicate the cost of services and specify at what time it would be convenient for you for the movers to arrive. On the appointed day, a team of friendly movers comes to your home, carefully packs all your things (you don’t need to prepare in any way) and takes them to the warehouse. On the same evening, things appear in your personal account on the website and in a convenient mobile application. nine0003

If you suddenly need something of the things, you can order a return at any time literally "in one click". In the same way, you can donate things if you find an extra pair of shoes at home or, for example, a set of winter tires after a trip to a tire shop.

Attic is a cool warehouse and comfortable service: you do not need to pack and carry things, and all options are available online, including support from managers every day!

Quick checklist for spring cleaning

To summarize:

  1. Make a plan.
  2. Prepare cleaning supplies and supplies.
  3. Prepare an energetic playlist for cleaning (for example, take the tracks from our post).
  4. Declutter.
  5. Start cleaning.
  6. Donate extra and winter clothes to the Attic.

Spring house cleaning is really not just a checklist, it is your investment in a good mood, in the upcoming parties with friends (be careful - you will really want to invite guests), as well as in updating the interior. Such cleaning can freshen up the house no worse than cosmetic repairs. Happy spring cleaning! nine0003
