Hallway Ideas - 31 Best Hallway Decor Ideas For Your Home
Little Greene, Carpetright, House Beautiful/Brent Darby
The hallway can often be the most neglected area of the home, overlooked when it comes to design and decoration in favour of those rooms we use most often. But everything from the colour on your walls to the materials underfoot can create a warm welcome for you and your guests.
'Hallways are the most important transitional spaces within our homes so whatever we choose to do decoration-wise has to work perfectly with the other rooms that lead off it,' says Marianne Shillingford, creative director at Dulux. 'This decorating dilemma often results in us being super cautious with colour and using neutral pale shades which can flatten the atmosphere, creating a space that is simply a functional corridor that no one really lingers in or remembers.
'You need to break down the visual boxiness of the space and add focal points of interest that make it a more dynamic part of your home to be in.'
Whether you have a dark hallway or a cluttered dumping ground, take inspiration from these hallway decor ideas, and expert tips and tricks to help you make the most of your space.

Hallway ideas: use art
Just because a hallway is a transitional space, doesn't mean it should be neglected when it comes to dressing with art or accessories.
'Always walk around the space and you will feel the natural spots for art to be,' says Camilla Clarke, Creative Director at interior design studio Albion Nord. 'This may be next to a window or at the end of a corridor. Remember art doesn’t always need to be hung on the centre of the wall it can rest on top of tables or layered next to sculptures or on bookshelves and joinery.'

Hallway ideas: pops of colour
A small hallway doesn't have to mean a dull hallway, says Emily Dunstan, Buyer at Heal's, nor do you have to stick to white paint to make it feel brighter and bigger. 'Don't be afraid to experiment with colour, especially in a light-starved space; confident use of a bright colour such as yellow creates a welcoming and vibrant space. If you don't want to go all out and paint your walls bright yellow, try adding a few bold accessories such as hooks or benches to get a similar feel.'

Hallway ideas: the illusion of space
'Create the illusion of space by adding mirrors,' says Emily. 'They reflect light, making the space seem wider and brighter, as well as giving you the chance to double check your appearance before you walk out the door.'

Hallway ideas: go for laminate
Your choice of flooring will have a bearing on how light your hallway feels. Opting for pale wooden planks will create the illusion of more light and space, but go for a wood-effect laminate instead of the real thing– anything sealed will make a high-traffic area a little more resilient, and effectively reflect light into a darker space.

Hallway ideas: rethink your design approach
When tackling a hallway redesign, think of your space as you would any other room. It's not simply a transitional area to hang your coat – hallways will benefit from a considered use of paint, softening rugs and runners, wall art and accessories as much as any other room.

Hallway ideas: feature storage
When it comes to hallway storage, so many of us will look to narrow consoles, low benches, or wall-mounted cubbies – but with these pieces, functionality often supersedes form. Provided your hallway is wide enough, there is no reason why you shouldn't go for more feature furniture, like a beautifully designed chest of drawers.

Hallway ideas: extra seating
If space allows, seating can be a useful addition to a hallway. 'It could be the perfect spot to escape to relax and read, somewhere to chat on the phone or simply a space to wait for others to put their shoes on. You could choose a statement chair and table to create a proper seating area or use a bench option instead,' says Emily.

Hallway ideas: try adding colour
'Hallways are typically smaller spaces, so we can afford to add more colour as we are merely passing through to our main living spaces,' says Gillian C. Rose, colour scientist, interior designer and founder of The Science of Colour. This warm sunshine shade is a particularly good choice for an uplifting welcome.

Hallway ideas: creating a palette
The size and length of a hallway should always be a key consideration when selecting a colour palette.
'For a warm glow, the skirting could be a clotted cream colour (high gloss finish), the walls could be in a soft butter yellow (flat finish), and the ceiling could be a hint of peaches and cream (flat finish). For a fresh, cool bask, the skirting could be a crisp light grey (high gloss finish), the walls in a pale minty colour (flat finish), and the ceiling the palest of azure (flat finish),' says Gillian.

Hallway ideas: WFH space
Under stair space can be more than just a cupboard for household debris. Forgoing the extra storage and opening it up can create new opportunities, such as a seating area to relax in or a modest desk and chair to provide a compact work from home space.

Hallway ideas: conscious styling
'As a transitional space within the home, it’s important that the hallway is clutter- free, well-lit, and consciously styled in-keeping with the rest of the interiors,' says Shelley Cochrane, Accessories Buyer at Furniture Village. 'The key to striking the perfect balance is to choose furnishings and décor that are both beautiful and functional – think slim-line consoles and storage benches to tidy away essentials, and handy wall mirrors for last-minute touch ups.'

Hallway ideas: layering lighting
Transform a dark hallway with carefully positioned lighting, says Emily. 'Directional wall lights can highlight a beautiful ceiling, and pendant lighting can be really effective in making a small space feel much bigger. A single pendant light can have the opposite effect, leaving too many shadows and patches of darkness. Instead, opt for multiple pendant lights running the length of your hall. This will draw the eye into the space and feel much warmer and inviting.'

Hallway ideas: try scandi-inspired
'Hallways, by nature, are typically dark. Brown, green, grey, telephone box red, and any of the primary colours in full hue, are all ones I would avoid,' says Gillian.
Instead, try a subtle scandi-inspired palette with a spectrum of clean whites and pale woods.

Hallway ideas: add a runner
Whilst tiles or wooden floors are the easy-to-clean option in a high-traffic hallway, slipping your shoes off onto a cold floor isn't terribly welcoming.
'A hallway runner can offer comfort as well as being the final touch that brings the design elements of your hallway together,' says Emily. 'Choose from a variety of colourways, patterns and textures. Think about whether you want to make a statement with your runner or whether your flooring is the centrepiece. If it's the latter, a more muted rug, such as natural jute, might work better. Don't forget to add an anti-slip mat underneath.'

Hallway ideas: vertical storage
'Ensure you have enough storage for everyone in the home to have a couple of pairs of shoes in the hallway, plus room for guests to leave theirs when they arrive,' says Emily. You can get a bit creative with storage in small spaces, employing a narrow locker like this Mustard Made design.

Hallway ideas: window dressing
'Blinds can be used to add a pop of colour and visual interest in the hallway where there is less wall space for other decorative elements. Introduce a window blind with an on-trend botanical design to bring the scheme right up to date. You can introduce texture to a neutral hallway with digitally printed window blinds. The result is a simply stunning showpiece for windows,' says Mike Stephen of Apollo Blinds.

Hallway ideas: indoor/outdoor connection
'Whether or not you are near a garden, you may want to consider bringing one in by using soft lettuce leaf shades,' says Gillian. 'I would recommend a dull flat finish as this creates gentler shadows and softer reflections. However, if you wish to create a more dramatic environment, then by all means select colours that conjure up strong, immediate emotional responses – deep aubergines and plums will do just that.'

Hallway ideas: protecting against scuffs and scrapes
Regardless of the paint colour you choose, it's advisable to invest in washable paint for a hallway. 'This way, any muddy splashes or little fingerprints can be easily wiped away. Alternatively, wood panelling can help to keep your walls in good condition. Try to opt for panelling that suits the age and history of your property,' says Emily.

Hallway ideas: playful tiling
Whilst narrow hallways benefit from large format floor tiles in highly polished and light-reflecting finishes, large or open-plan hallways allow more freedom.
'Play around with designs that draw the eye from the door and into the heart of the home. A beautiful parquet herringbone pattern is perfect for fooling the eye into seeing never-ending depth, while still keeping a traditional, warm and homely feel to the overall look,' Topps Tiles explain.

Hallway ideas: the ultimate hallway plant
'The Fiddle Leaf pops up on our feed as the ultimate statement piece for a hallway – what a welcome! The large, beautiful violin-shaped leaves are thick and leathery, the stem is substantial and robust. It prefers the indirect sun so by a door is often the perfect place,' says Maddie Porritt, Head Buyer at The Stem.

Hallway ideas: paint tricks
Clever painting techniques can help make a narrow hallway seem bigger. 'Use a lighter colour at the top of the wall, and halfway down – where a traditional dado rail might have gone – change to another colour. But always with small rooms, use light coloured paints and furniture, to help give an illusion of more space,' says Cato Cooper of The Emporium Somerset.

Hallway ideas: don't fight with the layout
Hallways can frequently be a bit of an architectural nightmare, with cramped proportions, uneven flooring and an absence of natural light, but trying to alter the structure of a hallway can pose more problems than it solves. The most we would suggest is dispensing with unnecessary partitioning to create a more expansive space, and using panes of glass in a front door to encourage natural light.

Hallway ideas: introduce fragrance
Use fresh flowers in a hallway to introduce a welcoming fragrance. Lisa Lewis, a Home Staging Consultant at Stylize, says: 'Having plenty of natural light in the hallway signifies a warm and happy home. Continue this happy state by keeping the entranceway clear and add a beautiful vase of real flowers to represent life and growth.'

Hallway ideas: balance walls and floors
If you use a feature floor tile with abundant pattern and intricate design, consider a fresh white palette for the rest of the room. This can be particularly effective in long and narrow hallways where busy floor tiles can guide the eye to the rooms beyond.

Hallway ideas: making the most of space
Kelly Collins, head of creative and in-house interior designer at Swyft Home, suggests reconsidering the traditional uses of a hallway. 'Transitional spaces are those parts of the home that we use to get from one to another, such as hallways, corridors and landings. Often there is quite a lot of wasted space here which could easily be big enough for a reading area. Recessed reading nooks, such as under the stairs or by transforming a built-in cupboard area can also be a great idea,' says Kelly.

Hallway ideas: hard-wearing floors
'Make sure you opt for a smart choice of flooring and something that's hardwearing. A porcelain tile will help to minimise any deterioration while still allowing homeowners to maintain something stylish and design-led, thanks to the choice in prints and patterns that they come in,' advise Topps Tiles. 'Porcelain or ceramic tiles offer practical solutions and are available in a range of styles and colours to suit any design scheme. Wood-effect porcelain tiles are an excellent alternative to real wood, visually identical but unaffected by everyday use and much easier to maintain. '

Hallway ideas: statement storage
Unless you have a separate porch it's likely you will still need somewhere to hang your coat and other accessories. 'Modern coat stands can bring a funky element to contemporary hallways and may better resemble a modern sculpture piece than a traditional coat stand, giving you an interesting new talking point for visitors,' says Emily.
If floor space is of a premium, consider wall-mounted hooks. 'Colourful coat hooks can offer a playful alternative that will be less obtrusive than a coat stand but still offer the same functionality. Plus, they make a great wall feature too,' she adds.

Hallway ideas: use lighting purposefully
'Layering of light is key when it comes to creating the impression of space in your hallway. LED step lights can help by creating drama,' says Sally Storey, creative director of John Cullen Lighting. 'A useful trick is to use 1W LED uplights to light a feature at the end of the hallway. This will draw ones eye down the hallway, creating the impression of space. Combine this with directional recessed downlights, to wash light down the walls, illuminating every inch of your hallway.'

Hallway ideas: choose the right door
One of the best ways to brighten a dark hallway is to buy a new front door. Creating new windows is a structural challenge, but choosing a door with glass panes is the easiest solution. If you have a dark hallway to the rear of your property, you can use glass panels to the half shown here, or in a front door, simply choose a frosted or reeded glass for privacy.

The entrance hall is a kind of face of the house: it is it that creates the first impression of it among visitors. Therefore, it is important that the decor of this area is attractive. In order not to constantly repair, the selected finish must have the following properties:
- Wear resistance. Including resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage.
- Durability. It is optimal that the manufacturer guarantees at least 5-7 years of coating service.
- Easy care. Given that the walls in the hallway are often contaminated, the material must at least tolerate wet cleaning. It is optimal if it can be brushed and some detergents used.
- Maintainability. It is important that the coating lends itself to restoration. Then, if a defect appears, it can be repaired, which is much cheaper and easier to replace the entire finish.
- Security. The material must be safe for the health of others. In addition, you need to consider its fire safety. Do not use flammable or toxic coatings in the room where the front door is located. This can cost lives in a fire.
Coating color and texture may vary. They are selected based on the characteristics of a particular hallway. By combining materials, shades and textures, you can achieve the best result. Light colors visually expand the space, dark ones, on the contrary, narrow it. Skillful use of the pattern on the coating, lighting design and competent installation of mirrors enhance the effect.

Various materials can be used in the hallway to decorate the walls. We have selected those that are best suited for this. Let's consider each in more detail.
Decorative plaster
Social networks of designer Evgenia Matveenko
Differs in an exceptional variety of invoices and shades. Thanks to the fillers added to the composition, the finished coating can be smooth, embossed or patterned, small or large. Plaster makes it possible to achieve unusual decorative effects, in addition, it has a number of advantages:
- Robust, high wear resistance and long service life.
- Good breathability. Plastered walls can breathe.
- Security. The coating does not emit toxic substances and does not burn.
- Easy care. Most materials tolerate wet cleaning.
Among the shortcomings, the complexity of applying the material, especially some of its varieties, should be noted. Only the master can properly plaster the walls, which, of course, increases the cost of finishing. The price of the material can also be high. But it more than pays for the durability and practicality of this type of finish. Another disadvantage is that decorative plaster can be very difficult to apply to complex architectural elements.

Paint
A practical and rather economical way of decorating walls. A wide range of colors allows you to choose any desired shade.
Social networks of designer Evgenia Matveenko
You can combine two or three colors, make an ornament or apply a picture. Paints make it possible to obtain special decorative effects. Some of their varieties are able to change color when changing the angle of view or lighting, imitate different materials, cast metal, etc.
The paints adhere easily to surfaces, even those with complex shapes and hard-to-reach places. Minor repairs to painted walls will not be difficult, it will be enough to repaint the damaged area. The advantages and disadvantages of different types of paints are presented in the table.
Benefits | Disadvantages | |
---|---|---|
Latex | High abrasion resistance, vapor permeability. The cover washes well. | Old coating is difficult to remove. Continuous exposure to moisture can cause peeling. |
Water based | Easy to apply, no unpleasant smell, dry quickly. The cost is low. | Some varieties get dirty after drying, wash off with water. Limited application. |
Acrylic | Fast drying, economical use, wear resistant, safe, durable. | Difficulty in choosing colors and shades. When self-mixing, they cannot be repeated. |
Silicone | High strength, durability, vapor permeability, UV resistance. They have water and dirt repellent properties. | High consumption and high material cost. |
Of the common disadvantages of using paint, it is necessary to note the need for careful surface preparation: the walls must be even, otherwise the slightest defect will be clearly visible.

Classic wallpaper
The range of wallpapers is very wide: you can choose the appropriate option from a variety of colors and textures.Social networks of designer Oleg Kurgaev
Wall-paper is rather simple to paste, their cost is relatively low. When choosing, you need to remember that not all types of wallpaper are suitable for the hallway.
Choose from these varieties:
- Washable vinyl. Good coverage of surface irregularities, easy cleaning, good adhesion. Can mimic a variety of textures. The cost of vinyl wallpaper is low. Among the shortcomings, you need to be aware of the low vapor permeability and the possibility of damage to the decorative vinyl layer. If there are pets in the house, it is better to choose something else.
- Non-woven. Durable, resistant to moisture. They easily withstand staining, which makes it possible to repair them or simply repaint them when the design gets boring. They are very easy to glue, especially varieties with a meter width. Of the minuses, it should be noted the need to level the base.
- Glass fiber. Canvases are made using glass fibers. Differ in the high durability, wear resistance, immunity to moisture. Such wallpaper is not afraid of mechanical damage. They are completely safe, vapor-permeable, withstand numerous colors and solvents. In addition, they additionally reinforce the walls. Disadvantage: the need for careful preparation of the base.
- Quartz wallpaper. They are a coating of quartz sand applied to a non-woven base. The material is very wear-resistant, not subject to mechanical stress, easy to clean and wash. It is possible to repeatedly stain with latex paint, which allows you to update the coating as needed. The disadvantages include a fairly high cost.
- Liquid wallpaper. They form a monolithic, very durable coating with high wear resistance and good soundproofing properties. The material is quite elastic; when the building shrinks, it does not form cracks. Easily tolerates repeated staining and wet cleaning. If necessary, the coating can be easily repaired. Of the minuses, it is worth noting the rather high cost.

Artificial stone
High-quality imitation of natural stone is produced in the form of tiles or flexible plates. The latter are especially suitable for designing curved surfaces.

For interior decoration, a composite is usually used, the basis for the production of which is gypsum. Artificial stone is quite easy to install, it goes well with other finishing materials, and also authentically imitates various natural varieties, including marble.
Among the advantages of the coating it is worth noting:
- Good wear resistance and high resistance to mechanical damage.
- Durability. With proper installation, artificial stone can last for decades.
- High moisture resistance. The material does not pass water to the base.
- Easy maintenance. The covering is well washed and does not absorb pollution.
- Security, including fire. The material is not combustible.
The disadvantage of artificial stone is its high cost, its flexible varieties are especially expensive. For this reason, cladding is more often used for finishing fragments of a room: doorways, corners, an accent wall section.

The choice of tiles and porcelain stoneware is very wide. The manufacturer offers materials with a variety of colors and textures. Imitations of expensive finishing materials are available: leather, natural stone, valuable wood.
The main advantages of ceramics are:
- Strength and high resistance to all kinds of damage.
- Durability, coating can last at least two decades.
- Moisture resistant, which greatly facilitates maintenance. The tile is easy to clean, and even aggressive detergents can be used.
- Good compatibility with other finishing materials. For example, you can tile only the lower third of the wall, which is the most vulnerable to dirt.
The disadvantages of the coating include not the easiest installation. Tiles are laid by specialists with the skills of laying the material.

PVC panels
Wall plastic panels are well suited for the entrance area. Their choice is very rich: an extensive range of colors with a variety of textures, patterns and decor. Often they are combined with other finishes: for example, paint, plaster or wallpaper.
Significant advantages of PVC panels are:
- Low cost. Perhaps this is the most budgetary way of facing.
- It is not necessary to level the walls before installation.
- Easy care. The panels are well washed, they are not afraid of moisture and household chemicals.
The material also has disadvantages. Firstly, it is instability to mechanical damage: after an impact, dents or even holes remain on the surface. Secondly, during installation, a certain amount of free space is “eaten up”, since it is required to assemble the crate. Thirdly, such panels do not tolerate ultraviolet radiation, they quickly fade in the sun. The last drawback will be relevant in houses or apartments where direct rays enter the entrance area.

The basis of the material is an MDF board, which is painted, veneered or laminated. The result is a high-quality imitation of leather, wood, stone, fabric and other natural textures.Bodes
studio social networksThe main advantages of MDF panels are:
- Ecological safety. The material is harmless to people and animals, it does not contain harmful resins and other toxic substances.
- Strength and high resistance to various mechanical damage.
- Durability. With proper operation, MDF panels last more than a dozen years.
- Easy maintenance. The panels are easy to wash and clean.
- Design. A high-quality coating is visually indistinguishable from real wood or, for example, natural stone.
Of the minuses of the material, it is worth noting its rather large weight, as well as the need to equip the crate to secure it. In addition, the panels are flammable, which is also considered their disadvantage.

Made from various materials: glass, wood, drywall, pressed boards, gypsum. Depending on the raw material, their properties and cost vary somewhat.
However, there are some common advantages:
- Quick and fairly easy installation.
- Possibility to mask defects in the base, for this reason complex preparation is not necessary.
- Maintainability. If necessary, the fragment that has become unusable is replaced.
- Possibility to simulate various materials.
- Wear resistance and strength.
- Easy maintenance.
The main and practically the only disadvantage of the material is considered to be a rather high price.

Making a niche in the wall
It is worth considering the presence of niches, ledges or arches. They make finishing somewhat difficult and require competent placement of accents. In a well-chosen design, such elements become a kind of highlight that adorns the interior. For example, niches are often decorated in contrast with the main finish, thereby not hiding them, but, on the contrary, emphasizing them. If the recess is small, you can place a lamp or figurine in it (in this case, do not forget to highlight them additionally). In a more spacious room, built-in or free-standing furniture is placed: for example, a wardrobe, a bench, a console.

Considering that the hallways are often small and dark, it is better to choose light and warm colors for them. Otherwise, there is a risk of getting the effect of non-residential premises. It is better not to get carried away with dark tones, they visually reduce the room. Saturated and bright colors should not be much. They are best used as accents. It is better to choose the color of furniture, focusing on the walls and floor. Its tone should be combined with the shade of the flooring or walls, or be in contrast.
Best entrance area colors:
- Cream, classic beige, coffee.
- Olive or grass green.
- Any shades of grey.
- Brick, clay, ocher.
- The color of soil or wood.
- White, pale yellow, mint, blue.

Social networks of designer Marina Kunitsyna
For the hallway, it is necessary to have storage systems for shoes and clothes - this is the minimum set that can be expanded. If possible, it is worth delimiting the space. This is especially important for narrow spaces. It is better to zone them with furniture, a multi-level ceiling, and wall decoration.
It is important to decide on the style. It can be common for all rooms or individual for each. In the latter case, the chosen direction should correspond as much as possible to the features of a particular hallway, its size and functionality. For example, minimalism, scandi, neoclassical or contemporary are well suited for a small room. Depending on the chosen interior style, the walls in the hallway will be decorated differently.
To decorate your hallway, you can choose one of the win-win design solutions:
- It is better to paint a small hallway with a lot of ledges, picking up a calm color. Hang photos on the walls in bright frames, highlight the ledges with light.
- If the walls are decorated with smooth plaster, the imitation of masonry at the base of the wall and at the corners will look good. You can also focus on the mirror and the doorway.
- A narrow room is decorated with wallpaper with a small pattern. The lower third of the walls are covered with decorative panels, furniture is selected to match.
- To visually increase the height of the room, you can choose striped wallpaper, close the lower part of the walls with suitable panels of any type or tiles.
There are a lot of wall decoration options for the hallway. When choosing the best one for your home, do not forget about the strength and durability of the material you like. Perhaps a good solution would be a combination of coatings. Then the lower part of the wall can be reliably protected with wear-resistant, but not the most attractive material, and the upper part can be decorated the way you want.

In most planning solutions, the entrance hall somehow flows into the interior passage.
Design: Alexandra Yakushenko
In many ways, these zones are similar, but in general, the walls in the interior of the corridor are less demanding on finishing materials, because there is no longer such high pollution and humidity from water leaking from shoes or an umbrella. So, from the point of view of technical characteristics, all the same options are suitable as for the entrance area.
Most commonly used in finishing:
- Washable paint - it can be matte, semi-gloss or glossy. It is better to take moisture resistant to make cleaning easier. And if there are animals or children at home who run a lot, jump and can damage the coating, choose special anti-vandal compounds.
- Decorative plaster is a durable, breathable, environmentally friendly material that allows you to create a calm, but not boring design. If you want to make the design more textured, choose plaster with a relief surface. Examples of how it looks on the walls of the corridor are in the photo below.
- Wallpaper - you can take both washable and, for example, paper. But remember that the latter do not like moisture and are easily torn. If you need an anti-vandal coating, look at fiberglass.
Most often, a corridor is an elongated and narrow space, which in itself looks like a boring and gloomy tunnel. You can try to fix this by visually adjusting the proportions with the help of trim, or not distort them even more, focusing on the most concise design, preferably in bright colors.
