Decorating and styling a console table, whether in your entryway, living room, even bedroom, can make or break a room. A console table is, after all, a prominent piece of furniture. 

Leave it to gather dust and clutter and it will become an eyesore, but curate it elegantly and it will instantly lift a room. Leaving its surface empty is a missed opportunity, too, to create a wonderful vignette.

Here, we’ve put together console table styling solutions for your entryway table decor and to add to your collection of living room ideas for a space that’s elegant, appealing, and individual in its design. 

How to style a console table

Much like coffee table styling ideas, color, line, texture, and scale of items such as table lamps, objets, artwork, and books are all important considerations when considering how to style a console table, whether it is located in a contemporary or more traditional space.

We asked some of the world's best interior designers for their top five rules on decorating a console table for impact – ideal for your arsenal of entryway ideas.

1. Make space for a console in a small space

'There's no denying that even small entryways benefit from a beautifully styled console table, though you may need to be clever with the design to keep the space feeling streamlined,' says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief, Homes & Gardens.

'I love the way this console table has been cleverly conjured up with a wall hung shelf; the fixings are hidden behind a smart profile above the radiator (which will also help keep the heat from rising), and the small lamps are battery-run, keeping the finish neat. Topped with a perfectly proportioned mirror and wall light, the space feels luxuriously elegant, without feeling compromised.'

2. Put a console table to good use

Not every dining room needs a buffet or sideboard for storage, and if space is tight, it is actually better swap out solid pieces of furniture for less bulky pieces. This is where console tables can come into their own. You can style your console with a tray of drinks (it's the perfect small home bar), keep your candles there when they're not in use and place a lamp on the top to create an inviting pool of light. As always, placing a picture just above the console will ensure the vignette feels complete.

Every great console display needs a picture or mirror sat just behind it – and not so high up that it feel disconnected from it. 

'We love the idea of a console styled up with a curated collection,' says Jennifer Ebert, Homes & Gardens' Deputy Editor. 'This could be items brought back from your travels, or simply some exotic finds picked up at Currey & Co .

4. Create a cohesive look

Consider working with a theme for the objects on a console table for a cohesive look. Here, an antiqued glass mirror takes center stage, with a range of objets in a range of natural tones displayed casually, but deliberately.

Pieces that don’t take the same cue prevent the whole from looking over the top, and create a frame for the display.

5. Opt for a pair of table lamps

How to style a console table and give it classic credentials? Selecting a pair of table lamps is a traditional approach to creating symmetry in interior design that’s perfect for many rooms, and a classic amongst entryway lighting ideas. 

‘When styling a console, I typically aim for symmetry, whether that's accomplished with lamps, vases, or decorative objects,’ says Ashley DeLapp, founder and principal designer of Ashley DeLapp Interior Design . 

Follow this approach when decorating a console table and little else may be needed for a beautiful display. ‘I like to keep things streamlined and clean, using books to add height while showcasing special trinkets or collections of flowers,’ Ashley says.

6. Make it minimal

In a contemporary room scheme, paring back what’s on the console table can be the best tactic. What’s crucial if that’s the case is selecting decorative pieces of sufficient scale to appear considered. On this table a simple bowl of flowers draws the eye while the focus is on the artwork above, framed by the console below.

7. Match materials or echo shapes

One possible strategy when thinking about how to style a console table is to take a lead from the table itself. This design’s legs are echoed by the quirky lamp, vases and even the artwork. The picture frame above repeats the color of the table's material for a pulled-together result.

Decorating with art is important in mastering console table styling, and there is a choice of ways to show artworks on a console table – here, designer Adam Bray showcases sculptures and textiles in a simple but stunning arrangement.

Another route to foregrounding art is to place it on an easel. 

‘I love to incorporate a piece of art on an easel when styling a console table,’ says Grace Brackman, associate designer, Maggie Griffin Design . ‘Whether an antique or abstract piece, art is a great way to integrate color and pattern to your tabletop.’

9. Keep it natural

Considering how to style a console table when the goal is a soothing scheme? Opting for a color palette in gentle natural tones is a great approach, especially in an entryway. In this space, organic color and texture are prominent on the plant pot and console table itself and complemented by the softest of hues on the lamp base. 

Follow this example by hanging a mirror low enough to reflect the objects on display to boost their impact.

10. Adopt a contemporary approach

A symmetrical arrangement of well-proportioned lamps or urns on a console table is a sure-fire choice, but opting for asymmetry is an interesting and modern alternative.

‘Try grouping a piece of sculpture, a statement lamp and a vase of flowers for a look that is balanced but has a more contemporary feel,’ says designer Birdie Fortescue . ‘Use a generous rug in coordinating tones and a congruous painting or mirror to complete the scheme.’

Entryways tend to be thoroughfares we give little thought to – and often interesting architecture is lacking. To up the style quotient, choose a console table with curvaceous lines, and echo its shapes and materials in the vases and sculptural finds displayed on top.

Decorating with antiques makes a beautiful focal point, but how to style a console table like this?

‘An antique console does more than provide a place to set things down,’ says Henriette von Stockhausen, co-founder and creative director of VSP Interiors . ‘By adding a pair of lamps with antique silk shades for a welcoming glow, along with art, tapestries and decorative items, one can create a layered comfortable look. ’ 

13. Play with pastels

Make a pleasing vignette on a larger console table with a pastel palette to draw a variety of pretty pieces and a floral arrangement together. The addition of white keeps the effect fresh and sophisticated. Smaller decorative pieces are best grouped, while taller designs will introduce the height that’s necessary on a larger piece of furniture. 

If you’re including artwork, hang it close to the table so it reads as part of the whole, and link it with color, too.

14. Frame an entry table display with wallpaper

Entryways can be tricky spaces to deal with as the proportions are often slim, and they suffer from little natural light and architectural interest. However, you can use some hallway wallpaper ideas to help create interest, as Irene Gunter, founder of interior design studio Gunter & Co explains:

‘I really wanted to introduce some wallpaper to inject color and texture but it wouldn't have worked in large amounts. This discreet frame detail that our joiner made from liquid metal panelling beads has created such a big impact, it provides a beautiful space for the wallpaper whilst framing the entry table perfectly.’

The position of the over-sized centrally-hung mirror is key, too – it is close enough to the console below to become part of the display of accessories, giving the entryway incredible impact and focus.

15. Display prized antiques in an entryway

Beautifully crafted antique console tables can look fabulous and add instant character to entryways – and if you’re lucky enough to have the space then a narrow piece can fit perfectly, like in this hallway by interior designer Penny Morrison . 

Add a pair of patterned table lamps to create balance at either end of the table, a gallery wall of smartly framed paintings and an impactful vase of blooms for a softening decorative touch. Antique fairs have a wealth of fabulous finds that you can display too – from small trinket boxes to stunning ceramics.

‘First impressions are essential when welcoming both you and your guests into your home. In order to achieve a statement hallway, I always incorporate a console or entry table into the space, which is both functional and elegant,’ says London based bespoke interior designer Louise Bradley . 

‘When dressing the entry table, it is important to consider both purpose and scale, drawing the eye into and around the room. Avoid clutter by adding a small decorative box, where you can store your essentials upon arrival or alternatively choose a console with drawers. 

'Adding greenery and a scent diffuser will also create an uplifting ambiance. Add further impact by dressing the walls with a large mirror, this will assist in reflecting natural light throughout and will open up the space.’

Note the slimline proportions of the table – including its legs – and the tall, narrow mirror – both cleverly work to exaggerate the entryway's height, making the narrow space feel more generous.

17. Pick a decorating theme for your entryway console

If your entryway console table has a distinct decorative theme – whether California Casual or country – picking accessories to decorate it with that echo that theme makes perfect sense. What looks good on a console table?

What looks good on a console table really does depend on where it sits. If you are asking what looks good in an entryway, then the console's surface will be a top consideration, and the answer will be a pair of lamps and a focal decorative piece, such as a beautiful, flower filled vase or piece of sculpture. In a living room, the answer may well differ, though at least one lamp always looks good on a console and creates an extra pool of diffused light that's very welcome. Other items you may want to include in a family space rather than an entryway include treasured photographs, a curated pile of favorite books you want to reach for regularly, and perhaps even a smart storage box in which clutter that might otherwise gather than can be neatly stashed.

How do you make a console table look expensive?

To make a console table look expensive, it's important to ensure the surface is kept clear of clutter and free of dust. Then, it's all down to the styling. The most effective ways to approach this are to put lamps at either end of the console, and a piece of sculpture or vase of flowers centrally. Then, hanging a mirror or picture just three to four inches above the surface of the table will finish the look perfectly.

Table lamps, artwork and framed photographs, and decorative accessories like vases, sculptures, and ceramics can all be used to decorate a console.

‘When styling a console table, consider scale and proportion,’ says Louise Wicksteed, design director at Sims Hilditch interior designers. ‘For example, table lamps framing the console add height and symmetry. Potted plans in a round bowl lead the eye, while stacked books and decorative objects add a personal touch.’

What do you use a console table for?

Console tables provide a space for table lamps and displays of decorative pieces and artwork and, because they are slim, they can fit into narrow areas like halls and entryways as well as into dining rooms and living rooms. As an alternative to positioning it against the wall, you might locate one at the back of a couch in the latter space.

They’re a versatile choice that could stand in for a desk in a compact space, or a bar when entertaining.

Are you wondering how to decorate a console table but don’t know where to start?  These pro tips work with any entry space and every style!

Some people are just naturally good at decorating. I am not one of those people. But, I have found some tried and true tips that not only work on console tables but any decor in your home.

You’ve heard “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” In this post, I not only share modern entryway table ideas, but I show you simple design principles to use for decorating any console table in your home like a pro.

This is a great tutorial if you:

The main function of an entry table is for display purposes as it is the first impression for the rest of your home.  And the accessories on an entry table and how they relate to each other is called a “vignette”.  

But this guide is for people, like me, that don’t use the term “vignette” in everyday life and just want a cute arrangement of accessories that make sense together on their entry table.

Your home’s décor is for no one else but YOU.  It should bring a smile to your face, uplift you, and even remind you of what is most important to you.

However, decorating a console or entry table can be a daunting task if you don’t know some basic steps to help you create a display that you’ll love to come home to daily!

What’s the Difference Between a Console Table and an Entry Table?

If you are wondering about the difference between a console, entry table, and sofa table, there’s no real difference in that they are all just display tables and the same guidelines apply for each.  

The only distinction is that a sofa table is usually behind a sofa, an entry table is often in an entry and a console technically is a table against a wall.  But for the purpose of this post, I’ll use those terms interchangeably.

How to Decorate an Entry Console Table

DISCLAIMER: There is one major rule for decorating an entry table and it actually applies for all home decorating in general.  Whatever decor or style you like trumps any decor advice anyone gives you.  In other words, these “rules” below are just guidelines to help.

For every one of these rules, you can probably find a gorgeous entry table display on Pinterest that breaks that rule. 

You have the final say on what looks best and these guidelines are here to help you get started.  It’s YOUR HOME so embrace what YOU like. Remember that your home and its decor is there to serve you – not the other way around.

Step 1: Where to Put a Console Table

The first thing is to decide where to put your table. There are no hard and fast rules regarding the right place to put an entry table in your home but it’s such an easy way to create a great focal point in a room. 

(Later in the post, I’ll give specifics on how to decorate an entry table in front of a window and behind a sofa.)

Also, it’s important to note that a console table can be any sort of display tables like a buffet or even a cute dresser.  I’ve even seen sewing tables and pianos function really well as entry tables in open spaces.

Console tables are the perfect solution when you have an open space that needs to be filled. Ironically, a well-decorated small console table can give the illusion of more space.

Step 2:  Pick an Anchor for Your Entry Table Decor

Every entry table should have a piece of art, a large round mirror, or even an old window above it as the focal point or anchor. 

Think of your anchor piece as the framing of a house that everything else relates to.  The width of your focal point should always be less than the width of your table.

Wall mirrors are always really easy to work with because they make the room look larger and you don’t have colors to coordinate with as you would with a piece of art.   Also, they provide a crisp, clean look for any decor in an interesting way.

 

Step 3: Entryway Console Table Decor Ideas – Pick An Arrangement Option

There are two basic options to get you started:

Symmetrical Entry Table Décor Ideas

One classic way to style any display table is with symmetrical décor.  Carrie from Lovely Etc has an excellent example of this with her vintage metal entry table.

Notice how she has flowers on both sides to create a symmetrical look.    Often with a symmetrical layout, you will have the same or a similar tall object on either side with filler items in the middle.  You can use vases of flowers, lanterns, or a pair of table lamps as your two tall items. 

Also, I love how the flowers on each side are not exactly identical.  This makes the entry décor a little more interesting and frees you up to find similar items you already have around the house.

She uses the books as filler to fill in the negative space under the mirror.  You can also use several short votive candles, or a long flower box with hydrangeas as filler. All of these are great options for a long table in a narrow space.

Non-Symmetrical Entry Decor 

The other great option is to have asymmetrical décor.  What works well is to have one side with accessories that are tall and skinny and the other side with accessories that are short and wide, which creates a real sense of balance to your accessories.

Notice how the accessories on my faux-stained entry table follow this rule with the skinny and tall vase of flowers on one side and the shorter, wider accessories on the other.

 

Step 4:  Pick Accessories for Your Entry Table Decor

Here are some basic guidelines to make picking the right accessories easy:

 

Use “

Groups of Three” For Your Foyer Table Decor

A great starting point for arranging console table decor is the “groups of three” rule. Often groupings of accessories look best in odd numbers. 

If you have three narrow skinny items on one side of your table like a tall lamp or candlestick, have a combination of heavy objects or short shapely pieces on the other side.

To make items look taller, add a short stack of books underneath. There is no wrong way to do this but by using groups of three you can organize your decorative pieces easily and create great focal points.

You’ll notice how Emily at Small Stuff Counts does an amazing job of decorating with clusters of three.  Also, I love how nicely the accessories fill the negative space around the round mirror.

Notice how she keeps the bottom shelf simple too but that doesn’t mean it lacks storage options, as you can see from the basket and white box where she has lots of extra space.  

 

Decorating a Console Table with “

Color Friends“

Everybody needs a friend and the same applies to decorating!  To help the accessories in your entry display to tie together, make sure each item has a ‘color friend’ so there are always at least two objects of each main color in your color palette.

Notice how Angie of Postcards From the Ridge applies this concept making sure that each item has at least one other item of the same color to tie the whole display together.  The green in the boxwood wreath ties in with the vase and the purple of the lavender ties in nicely with the throw.

Consider incorporating natural materials and organic elements like a woven basket, wreath, small plant or faux flowers to add interest to the overall look of your entryway decor.

 I love how she uses this bold wallpaper, elegant lamp, and other decorative items to create different focal points in this small entryway.

Not only is this white entry table a great addition to her small foyer, but it is a main focal point of her home by adding lots of her own personal style.

Avoid Clutter

The most appealing console table displays are the ones that are not overcrowded with accessories because it creates a cluttered look.   This is one of those instances where less is actually more – especially for console tables in smaller spaces.

Don’t feel like you have to fill every empty space on your table with decorative objects. It’s good to air on the side of things being a little sparse as it creates a big impact and a good first impression.

Use Items Larger Than A Cantaloupe

Sometimes small items can make a piece of furniture look too busy. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that all small decor is larger than the size of a cantaloupe. This will automatically create the illusion of more surface space.

She puts enough to fill the negative space on both sides but keeps her entry decor simple.   I love the ottomans underneath that are not only stunning but are a great storage idea for extra seating.

What Do You Put Above an Entryway Table?

A piece of artwork or a large mirror is always a must for decorating your entry table. Wall art can be a main focal point where you would otherwise have dead space in a dark entryway. Using family photos to make a gallery wall is a popular option as long as they are on a similar scale to your table.

You want a piece of wall art or mirror that is large enough for the top to be at least 8 inches above eye level and the bottom edge to be high enough that it doesn’t leave much space between the table accessories.

Renovate Your Faith: The Truest Thing About You

Seeing the family photos on my own entry table reminds me of when my daughter Morgan became interested in our family ancestry. As a result, we sent away for our ancestry.com results. 

I informed her that my side of the family was mostly German, which is why my parents spelled my name with an “i” as it is the German spelling of “Karin.” 

After waiting a couple of weeks, we received the results only to find out that I actually did not have German ancestors.  In fact, most of my family tree was actually English!

To answer this question I had to better define the word “true”.  According to the dictionary, “true” can be defined as “accurate, exact or honest”.

The most accurate, exact and honest thing about us is that we are dearly loved and treasured by our Creator.  And when we are able to see ourselves the way He does, our earthly insecurities wash away.

Did you know that the fact that you are intensely loved by God surpasses all other truths about you?

In Thessalonians 1 Paul writes, “For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you because our Gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction.”

The Greek word for “loved by God” (or “beloved” in several translations) is a phrase Jews applied only to supremely great men like Solomon or Moses.   Therefore, the title of the greatest men of God’s chosen people is also bestowed on us.

In Galatians 3:27, it says that we are “known by God.”  He knows us not from afar but as the center of his divine attention.

The price God paid for our new standing before Him is astronomical – the blood of His Son Jesus. 

But through the sacrifice of Jesus, God no longer looks at us and sees a record of wrongs.  When God looks at us, He sees His beloved children whose slates are wiped completely clean.

There was a time I inadvertently imagined God with a plastic ruler waiting to slap my hand whenever I sinned.  But that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Instead, God doesn’t want us to sin because it hurts our relationship with Him and it harms us.

Whether you are struggling with your own securities, hurts from the past or rejections, God has already said that you are His and you belong.

Knowing that we are outrageously loved by the Creator of the universe changes how we perceive ourselves and we have a natural desire to follow Him and His Word

We can rest in knowing that God really does mean it when He says that He will work all things for our good (Romans 8:28) and any suffering we have to endure will not be wasted.    And in the meantime, when things are hard, He weeps along with us.

Because of His great love for us, we can trust him to carry our burdens because as His beloved daughters and sons, He genuinely wants to carry our worries, hurts, and concerns. (Matthew 11:29-30)

We have the freedom to be more compassionate and gentle with ourselves because we are deeply loved by God.  We no longer have to be hard on ourselves because if God is not putting unnecessary demands on us, why should we?

Each of us has an identity.  But when you come to a saving relationship with Christ, the truth that you are outrageously loved by your Heavenly Father is priority over every other aspect of your identity.

How Do You Accessorize an Entryway Table?

So often the best console table accessories are already in your home. Not only is a console table a great way to display important items but it’s great storage for functional pieces in your home. Consider your color scheme before you go looking for items.

Examples of foyer table decor are a large vase, decorative bowls, faux plants, fresh flowers, picture frames, stacks of books, wicker baskets or a large mirror. Each of these items adds a personal touch that makes your decor uniquely yours.

How to Style Entryway Tables On a Budget 

You don’t have to spend a lot to decorate your entry table decor.  In the picture above, you can see my half-moon entry table with an old window as my anchor.  On it, I put my DIY Scroll Wall Art which cost less than $5. 

I also spray-painted some old candlesticks, decorated an old frame with spray-painted keys and burlap, and added some boxwood balls from Target.

How to Decorate a Round Entry Table 

For a round table or half-moon entry table, you can use the same guidelines as I explain above.   You are just limited on space with the rounded corners so it’s best to keep it simple by only accessorizing with a few items that coordinate with your anchor piece.

 

How to Add Storage to a Console Table 

A console table with storage is a great plus because the items you store are out of sight but also easily accessible.  Use baskets galvanized buckets or white boxes for sleek and simple storage ideas.

What to Put on the Bottom Shelf of an Entry Table

Many entry tables have a bottom shelf like the pic below.  This gives lots of options for decor but also storage.  Decorate the lower shelf in the same way you decorated the top of the entry table.  

Use the same guidelines with having slightly taller/skinnier objects on one side and wider/shorter pieces on the other side.  If you use the same concept on the top of the console table, make sure your tall items are not on the same side to make it more interesting.

How to Decorate a Console Table Behind a Sofa

Decorating a console table behind a sofa (or sofa table) is easy.  The only main difference is you have no anchor as of course there is no wall to hang a mirror or picture.  Often, it works well to go with symmetrical decor, as we mentioned earlier in the post, since there is no anchor.  You can decorate with lamps on each side which provides additional lighting like the image above.

How to Decorate a Console Table in Front of a Window

When decorating an entry table in front of a window, the window itself serves as an anchor.   Make sure your decor coordinates with curtains. 

This is a great place to have a coffee table with ottomans underneath as there is probably a chair not too far from the window.  The ottomans can be easily pulled out as a footrest.

Here’s a more typical decorating scenario for decorating a console table in front of a window.  See how the table fills the blank space in front of the window and enhances the view.  You don’t want to obstruct the view through the window but add to it.

Just because an entry table and it’s decor are beautiful doesn’t mean it can’t be functional. Consider wicker baskets on a bottom shelf to store blankets. A console table is a good place to put a small bowl for keys or a wood charging station for your phone. Smaller items can also go in a beautiful wooden box on top of coffee table books.

First, it’s a good idea to pick a narrow foyer table so you have plenty of room to walk around it. Always use a simple table for a small space. Even if you have a lot of walk space to work with, go with a rectangular foyer table that’s not very deep so it doesn’t stick out in a narrow hallway.

A small tray, a statement lamp, and a gallery wall that reflects your personal tastes is more than enough. Use the rule of three and incorporate color friends in your decorative items to give a cohesive look to a small table. The same tips for decorating entryway table decor under wall art apply to a table with a TV on the wall. Make sure that the width of your TV is not longer than the console table.

An entry table in front of a console table is such a fun opportunity to decorate with houseplants. You can use a grouping of three different plants on one side with art on the other side or maybe two table lamps on either side with a box planter of succulents in the middle. The options are endless as indoor plants make such beautiful home decor accessories in any room.

How Do You Make a Console Table Look Expensive?

You can use the tips above for decorating but the most important piece of advice is to not decorate with too many items. And make sure the items you do place on your console table are bigger than a cantaloupe.
