How Long do Cucumbers Take to Grow? [Cucumber Growing Stages]

When planting from seeds, it takes 50-70 days before a cucumber plant produces fruit that is ready for picking. Germination of the seeds takes 3-10 days and after flowering, the cucumber is ripe in about 10 days.

Understanding the cucumber plant stages will help you better understand its growth timeline, when is the best month for planting cucumbers and when they will be ready for picking. The exact number of days may differ on the growing conditions but they offer a good outline.

This guide will take you through the different stages of a cucumber plant and how you can help it grow healthier and faster.

How Do You Speed Up Cucumber Growth?

The above timeline offers a general idea of how many days it takes to grow cucumbers. The exact cucumber growing season will depend on the environment it is in.

You can try to speed up the cucumber growth timeline by providing the cucumber with its ideal growing conditions. The following tips may also help your harvest when the weather is not cooperating.

  1. Cover the Soil with Black Plastic

When growing cucumbers outdoors, you cannot control the soil temperature as much. If you live in an area where temperatures might still drop in the spring and summer, it is a good idea to add a soil cover.

Simply covering the soil with black plastic can already help to maintain a soil temperature above 60°F. The black color absorbs the sun’s heat and retains moisture.

  1. Place Above Soil Heating Pads

When growing cucumbers indoors, you can better control the soil temperature with a heating pad. These are simple heating elements that you can buy in gardening stores.

Just place the cucumber plant container on top the heating pad. The warmth will radiate through the materials and act as insulation.

  1. Cover Young Cucumber Plants

Seedlings and young plants are the most sensitive. It doesn’t hurt to provide them with a little extra protection for small insects.

You can find permeable covers and netting for outdoor growing plants. These will still allow rainwater and sunlight while still making it difficult for pests to get to them.

  1. Tie Young Cucumber Plants to a Trellis

Cucumbers can grow horizontally but it is better for them to grow vertically around a trellis or wood beam. This not only looks beautiful in your garden but also makes them more difficult to reach for insects in the soil.

Growing vertically also helps them to get more sunlight. Use rope ties to keep the plants upright and they will start to vine around the vertical structure.

These are water-loving plants so it is important to make sure that they get enough rainwater when grown outdoors. Keep a rainwater gauge nearby and check whether it reaches at least 1 inch per week.

If your area is going through a dry spell, you may have to water the plants. Check that the top 2 inches of soil stay moist at all times.

How Long Do Cucumber Plants Produce Fruit?

Cucumber plants only produce fruit once. After the cucumber growing season the plant will die off. This means that you would have to plant new seeds every year to grow fresh cucumbers.

After the flowering stage, it takes about 10 days for cucumber to grow. These need to be picked sooner than later or else the taste will turn bitter.

Since there is such a short window of time between the cucumber plant producing fruit and the harvest, many growers choose to sow the seeds in stages. For example, they might leave 2 weeks before starting a second row of cucumber plants.

Growing cucumbers in a greenhouse is a completely simple and very exciting activity. You just need to take into account a few usual rules, and there will certainly be a secured collection. First you need to prepare the greenhouse and soil. Cucumbers are susceptible to many diseases and are simply affected by pests. Therefore, when growing a crop, the soil must be changed every season, otherwise the collection will decrease significantly. A place for a greenhouse is chosen with a small southern slope. It should not be exposed to cool northerly winds. First you need to prepare the greenhouse itself.

Cucumber fruiting time is always written on the seed package. Early maturing varieties give a harvest for 35-45 days after emergence, in other words, less than a month and a half (subject to good care). But late varieties can grow two months before harvest, so in cool regions, where every warm day counts, it is better not to plant them. Cucumbers are a heat-loving crop, so the planting deadline depends on your climate. In Siberia, you can sow almost until the end of June. Prepare the soil before planting. Cucumber grows well in loose, fertile, organic-rich soils. If organic fertilizers (compost, manure) have not been applied since autumn, then they are applied under the main spring tillage, up to 10–15 kg/m2.

Then the ridges are watered with a solution of Energen growth stimulator. To do this, take 1 capsule, dilute it in 10 liters of warm water (50 ° C), stir well and water over the surface of the beds, spending a solution of 2-3 liters per 1 m2. Even a small dose of Energen that has entered the soil leads to the formation of a large amount of humus, thereby significantly increasing soil fertility.

There are different ways to grow cucumbers with different results. For example, a seedless method allows you to get the first fruits of cucumbers after 2 calendar months. And the seedling method reduces this time by two weeks, and sometimes cucumbers bear fruit in a month.

Everything is individual. There is no standard as such. You yourself look at the availability of free land or calculate by yield in kg per m2. The main thing is to be able to move without restricting movement. The height has its own standard of 2.2 m. This is the height at which you can safely walk and not worry about your head.

This year, when planting cucumbers, I dug a seedling hole a little deeper and threw nettles at the bottom of each. With her hands, naturally in good work gloves, she tore it into pieces and laid it on the bottom of the hole, mixed it a little with the ground, and only then planted cucumber seedlings there. The lashes of cucumbers I planted with nettles were both stronger and more generous than those I planted as usual. First of October, I collected the last cucumbers and this is in the open field. This method was not invented by me, my mother-in-law gave such good advice. And next year I will plant all the cucumbers only with nettles.

I like Goosebump. Ideal for me, cucumbers are self-pollinating, not bitter, always a bountiful harvest. For fertilizer, I use iodine (a drop of iodine per 10 liters of watering can), and also yeast with sugar (3 tablespoons of yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar, also per 10 liters of watering can).
