The colour of the moment, grey is everything you want it to be in almost any living space. Compatible with living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, it’s only natural that its powers would work beautifully in a bedroom. These forty grey bedrooms show the stretch of grey across a range of themes and colour solutions. Often paired with brighter reds, oranges or purples, its muted hues complement and contrast over a variety of design solutions. Whether for a couple, bachelor or bachelorette, each of these designs delivers to their desired end – pampering, relaxation, or a good night’s sleep – with grey as their hero.

Patterned to perfection, this grey bedroom uses stripes, hexagons and concrete to provide a canvas for autumnal hues. Bright copper pendant lights and olive green are set upon by pops of yellow, blue and black in a rug and ornaments.

The modern industrial is exemplified in upper concrete walling and simple grey bedding. A wooden floor adds warmth, as a glass walk-in wardrobe mirrors more grey.

Monochromatic is not just black and white. This statement space juxtaposes grey and white in wall panelling, bedside fixtures, distressed wood and seven art forms.

Grey is the ideal minimalist hue. This space highlights its charm under panelled LED lighting and simple block furniture.

Green-grey tones add and remove emphasis in this bedroom. Abstract art over a concrete wall helps to center the space, symmetry created by two small side tables at either side of the bed. A leather chair and rug add cozy casual appeal.

Textures dominate this muted space, made resplendent by hanging globe pendant lights. Mirrored by a bedside bauble vase, grey strikes in a feature wall and joinery. Differing woods line the rest. The dark bedroom chair adds some contrast to the whole setup.

A grey feature wall is powerful, not overpowering. A geometric headboard acts the focal point, while grey bedding comforts white drop lighting, patterned wooden floors and two beige chairs.

Yet another one that uses cool geometric patterns on the headboard side to good effect.

Lending the masculine, grey wows in matte walls, a corrugated hanging light and complementary bedding. A row of white books and distressed abstract even out this grey and beige space.

A loftier respite is offered by grey and wood. Wooden Roman blinds reveal concrete and wooden stairs, culminating in a black futon bed. Monochromatic art ties it together.

Sprigs of fresh tulips add life to this three-panelled headboard, acting as a background. Matched by mirrors on either side, grey and green clothe the bed in natural tones.

The eclectic shines in top-to-toe grey walls, some matte, some concrete. Light grey windows open up a series of picture frames, wooden chest and table, and potted cacti. The industrial desk chair you see here is the Tolix armchair.

Grey and red intersect beautifully in this space for desire. Striped with a rose-red headboard and throw, grey wooden walls show off abstract art and add diamonds to the rug below.

Grey and purple play off one another in a room lit by a silver chandelier. A plum feature wall leads to violet bedding, curtains and an aubergine rug. Grey fills the spaces in between, adding character in a chaise lounge. We love how everything melds really well here (even the vanity chair!).

Lighter shades of pastel add decorum in this Florentine-patterned space, perfect for pampering. A violet chair matches a throw, while a grey rug and wallpaper align with a headboard and white drop chandeliers.

Grey makes the space larger, through walls headed by white textured panels. Mirrors either side reflect grey walls and framing curtains, doubling the space on either side.

Grey and black alternate using the tiling effect on the central wall. Placed on black wooden flooring, a grey rug picks up light, allowing a brown-and-beige bed to invite.

This 60’s style bedroom is light and bright, as afforded by the help of grey. The bedroom chandelier drops down from the ceiling like a sculpture. White chiffon curtains, a textured wall decoration and feature wall create spaces. A touch of grey bedding denotes the centre.

Greys and purples meet again in this multi-hued bedroom, lacquered and ornate. Grey provides a light central panel, turning purple on the sides. Purple-hued browns adorn the floor and leather chair, while a grey clock pops above central yellow cushions.

Grey denotes softness, in contrast to black and white. This multi-monochromatic space offers grey relief in a soft rug, duvet, and glass wall panel, while black, white and wood frame the rest.

Grey and orange are a perfect pairing in this modern space, offering warmer tones. Grey evokes calm in a feature wall and bedding, while wood and pumpkin invite autumn siestas.

Grey’s cool allows yellow’s sophistication in this bold bedroom. Framing the central feature, grey chairs and an ottoman play with charcoal and white on a wooden floor.

Grey and pink offer the feminine in a couple’s bedroom. Grey stripes the walls and bedding, while pink adds detail, a black rug grounding.

Grey lends the kitsch elegance, in this grey and white space. Grey frames a crochet print and bed under, while white gets fresh in bedding and curtains. Pastels and metallics draw the eye.

Grey emanates the modern and clean. A side wall, bedding and side table in grey meet a beige headboard and monochromatic canvas, in this unisex space.

The rectangle patterned headboard extends to the ceiling to neatly partition the bedroom into a sleeping space and a dressing space.

Shapes, rather than colours, dominate this grey space. A chequered feature wall leads to an oblong bed space, matched by a cylindrical bedside lamp and table.

Green and grey culminate in a central, minimalist futon bed. Exploding in feature wall textures, grey shines in the wardrobe glass. A green-grey shagpile creates softness.

A grey inlet shines in this space, as framed by white walls. Wooden floors offer a base to an L-shaped bedside table, window seat and bed, dressed in – you guessed it – a myriad of grey tones.

This minimalist grey bedroom is a darker space for sleeping. Wedged between floor-length mirrors and grounded on wood, a sprig of flowers gives contrast.

Perfect for a couple, this grey and white room focuses on clean lines. Simple charcoal pinstripes adorn a white wall and curtains, while grey oscillates between dark and light.

Light and bright, this space only softly touches grey. Glowing lamps on a white bedside bench herald a soft space for sleeping, amongst white and swan grey.

Grey and wood make a statement with a panelled wall and glossy dark-wood floors. Two monochromatic prints stand out above glowing curve lights, drawing the viewer in.

Grey and white evoke a relaxed feel, backgrounded by taupe cotton panelling. Letting in light from a floor-length window, grey, brown, white and taupe are sun and lamp-lit. A beige woollen rug keeps them company.

Grey and wood alternate in this industrial space, built for a bachelor. Rough wooden bedframes, window seats and a feature wall are joined by a grey headboard panel, walls, bedding and cylindrical lighting. LED lights frame the scene.

Another bedroom for a bachelor, charcoal and wood room here form the slick. Adorned with a racing car over a striking wooden panel, charcoal panelled walls match a plush rug and soft bedding.

Eclecticism is muted by grey in a half-wall, quilted chair and charcoal bedding. Dots connect to photos and memories on grey, while wooden walls and flooring sidle next to a stack of books.

Grey becomes warmer in this brown and grey bedroom. Shrouded in semi-lined grey wallpaper, warm chocolate bedding, a chair and wooden elements create cosiness between lighting.

Grey and pastels mix beautifully together, as this sleeping space shows. Light grey walls and a matching headboard are popped by hues of mint, baby pink and blue to add the feminine. Intersecting sepia portraits and bedside dandelions provide delicacy.

Almost green, this grey and beige bedroom looks different closer in. Dangling white bauble lights glow on a grey rug and charcoal walling. Beige and white bedding with light-wood fixtures rest beside bedside tables. An olive chair adds a finishing touch.

You can hear the sea in this oceanic bedroom, heralded by a painting in blue. Grey velvet bedding and quartered carpets mark the space beneath a multitude of black and white hanging lights. And just look at those beautiful wall sconces!

A touch of honey is all it took to liven up this grey space, resplendent in honeycomb patterning. Grey and honey mix with black and white to add colour and texture to different living areas.

PAINT A FAUX HEADBOARD

A great way to zone a space and create a faux headboard is with paint. To recreate this clever yet simple grey bedroom idea, simply mark out where the bed is going to go and outline with a pencil where you want the 'headboard' to be. Use masking tape to keep the paint from blurring, and just paint in the square. Continue the line down onto the skirting board for a designer finish.

Top Tip: To build up a tonal grey bedroom scheme, choose a paler grey on the rest of the walls.

DRAMATIC GREY

For a dramatic grey bedroom, paint panelling in deep grey to create a warm and cocooning feel. The stunning lamp and brass details on the black metal bed set it off perfectly and add shine, adding to the cosy feel. A traditional dark oak floor adds warmth and gives an aura of permanence. Painting the picture frame in the same colour as the wall means the image stands out.

Top Tip: Recreate the panelled look with wallpaper. For example, try the Contemporary Wood Panel Wallpaper from I Love Wallpaper or this beautiful Marble Wood Panel Effect Wallpaper from World of Wallpaper.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Introduce grey into your bedroom with carpet. It’s a great base for so many colour schemes, either bold or subtle. This colour carpet is durable as it won’t show the dirt and it has a textured look that adds another dimension – it's soft underfoot and adds a cosy feel to the room.

'Grey has consistently been one of the most popular home decorating shades over the last decade, and it shows no sign of slowing down any time soon,' says Jemma Dayman, Carpets Buyer at Carpetright. 'Given that the bedroom is our sanctuary, a calm space where we retreat to for rest, recuperation and to recover, it’s no surprise that this soothing neutral hue is our go-to colour choice.'

Top tip: Don’t forget to invest in good quality underlay, as this will not only increase insulation but also reduce wear over time and create an even softer feel underfoot.

COORDINATING GREYS

A coordinated, all-grey bedroom scheme can look elegant, cosy and cocooning. This works by focusing on neutral palettes and layering materials and textures (sumptuous velvet works great here) to ensure the bedroom remains inviting. Matching bedside tables and storage benches maintain a cohesive look.

Paint effects, and particularly concrete effects, are big news at the moment, and this beautiful mural is a case in point. It looks a bit like raw plaster or an abstract painting but it brings grey and navy blue together in a fabulous way and really makes an impression. They are custom printed to your measurements, so there is no wastage.

This year there are two 'It' colours, Ultimate Grey and Illuminating; a solid grey and vibrant yellow. It's a stunning combination too – the cool neutral of the grey then a hit of bright yellow really makes it sing.

BUILD UP YOUR COLOUR STORY

To introduce grey to a plain bedroom, start with the bed. A tall headboard has impact and immediately anchors the space. Then adding grey prints above create symmetry. Add a bold grey and white patterned curtain, grey cushions and throws, and a black pendant light for a complete look.

Top tip: Siting a bed between two windows gives it a frame and makes it easier to create your look.

Soft grey and pink is a winning combination in the bedroom, creating a stylish space that is still calm and inviting. If you have the space, an ottoman like this at the end of the bed is so useful. MAKE USE OF ALCOVES

Storage is so important in the bedroom and if you have alcoves like this, it’s the perfect place for wardrobes. These are fitted but if you have inherited some, why not paint them grey? It will add depth to your colour scheme. Then pick up the colour in the carpet. This also shows how well grey goes with sage green – a hot colour trend this year.

'In the bedroom grey is a particularly versatile shade – something that is especially important if you are investing in larger pieces of bedroom furniture like a bed frame or fitted furniture,' says Megan Baker, Head of Design at My Fitted Bedroom. 'From soft dove to charcoal to granite, grey provides a warming and more modern alternative to white or wood effect furniture.'

THINK ABOUT THE WINDOWS

Pale grey shutters look so elegant in this bedroom, filtering the light beautifully. They fit neatly into the recess leaving room for a small window seat. Leave the shutters open during the day and close them at night. For this grey bedroom idea, the pearl grey shade of the shutters sits perfectly with the blue and cream colour scheme in the rest of the room.

'Your bedroom is a space you want to feel calm and safe, and grey is a neutral shade which can offer this. Any window covering is an investment, especially shutters, so make the right decision with colour and how it complements your colour scheme,' says Victoria Walker, product manager at Hillarys. 'Grey is a timeless colour but there are many tones to choose from. Lighter shades offer a cooler, fresher space whereas darker greys and charcoal tones can do the opposite. Choosing the right shade also depends if you want your window covering to blend in or become a feature in the room.'

Bedroom in gray tones: photo of modern interior design ideas

How to create a fun base for a bedroom from shades of one of the most neutral colors.

Publication date: 03.11.2019

Material prepared: Vera Rogatko nine0003

Gray interiors are not boring, they look dignified and expensive, and in popularity they can only compete with beige ones. And if you're thinking of sticking with achromatic neutrals when looking for the perfect bedroom palette, you're on the right track.

In this post, we explain why a bedroom design in gray tones is good, how to dilute such an environment, how to choose successful tonal combinations for it, and how Russian designers do it.

4 advantages of gray and its shades in the bedroom

1. Organic in apartments and houses of our latitudes, where it is mostly cloudy and not very sunny. A professionally designed interior always takes into account the possibilities of natural light, the view outside the window and the prevailing color of the sky.

Design: Dmitry Kulish, Anna Karpova, Anton Semkin

Design: Svetlana Dikushina

Design: Maxim Prunkov, Alexander Korolev

nine0003

2. Loyal to other colors. If you remember the basics of color, shades of gray do not belong to the spectrum, and therefore are combined with any "color" colors - red, green, purple, and so on. In the interior of a bedroom with such a palette, you can safely use multi-color combinations, complement the room with colorful linens or colorful curtains using the ikat technique.

Design: Maxim Prunkov, Alexander Korolev

Design: Maria Pilipenko

3. Do not irritate, help to relax. If you think about the psychology of gray tones, it turns out that they are emotionally neutral, and are usually associated with something calm, comfortable, relaxing. It is pleasant to return to a room decorated in such a palette after an eventful day.

4. Non-marking. nine0022 Actually, a recreation area is a place where dirt does not accumulate too quickly. However, if in the daily rush to forget to brush off the dust from the gray chest of drawers or closet, it will not be very conspicuous.

How to effectively decorate a bedroom in gray: photo + design techniques

In warm shades

Pure, unadulterated gray is extremely rare, and paint, wallpaper, flooring usually has either a warm or cold undertone. If the windows face north or northwest, warm grays with beige or brown tones will help offset the visual chill in the room. nine0003

Design: Maria Makarova

In cool shades

This palette will balance the active light in the morning and at noon in a room with windows to the south or southeast.

And if you decorate the bedroom in gray-blue or, say, gray-lilac, a cheerful palette will help you wake up easily in the morning.

Design: Maxim Gusev, Olga Guseva, Irina Klassen

Design: Julia Kamanina, Anastasia Sizova

Dark

In a room intended for sleeping, it is not necessary to chase after the active lightness of the space: a little twilight would be even more appropriate, especially if someone from the family needs to take a nap for an hour or two during the day. And graphite, ink, coal tones are now just at the peak of popularity.

With wood

The best design option for those who prefer gray even with a warm undertone is still a bit cold. The texture of the wood will add warmth to the room even if it is also in cool colors.

Design: Alexey Rozenberg

With unusual wallpaper

A complex, catchy or bright pattern or ornament will quickly dilute the monotonous color. nine0003

Design: Anton and Marina Fruktov

With soft panels on the wall

Let's kill two birds with one stone: a high soft panel will help to soundproof the room a little and level out the visual austerity of the palette.

In a total look palette

Do you remember this Instagram trick, only in white, that Swedish designers used to use in interiors? Totally gray environment - a more practical and relaxed option. When decorating such an interior, use as many different textures as possible, dilute it with white - then the space will turn out to be multi-layered and complete.

How to complement a gray bedroom?

  • Fabrics with strokes, contrasting stripes, to structure the room with a predominance of a calm mono-color, to give it a rhythm.

  • Graphics, paintings, art objects in adjacent shades, to complement the existing textures in the interior and visually increase the value of a neutral setting.

  • Plants and flowers, to make the room cozier. Alive, artificial, dried - this is already based on personal preferences.

Bedroom design in gray tones: photo + 4 notes from the pros

1. A single achromatic tone + a small color accent

The customer of architects Dmitry Bykov and Evgenia Furmenkova loves gray - it was “appointed” in the palette of this apartment main. The room for sleeping and relaxing is designed in pearl-gray shades, the walls are complemented by moldings, and a Flos floor lamp, or rather, its half, is even “glued” into one. nine0003

However, the central feature is the play with color. The only colored object here is a flat blue vase, and against the background of a single color, this shade is revealed in full force.

Design: Dmitry Bykov, Evgeniya Furmenkova

2. Textured wall

Architects Maria Serebryanaya and Sergey Makushev created an aristocratic interior in neutral tones with rich textures for a Moscow family. This principle is especially well read in one of the bedrooms, where the wall at the head of the bed was decorated with imitation of three-dimensional prints of leaves. nine0003

Design: Maria Serebryanaya, Sergey Makushev

3. Thundercloud shade + dark moldings

This unusual technique, adding coziness and intimacy to the interior, was created by designer Tatyana Brimmer for the recreation area of her regular customers. By the way, there is no central lighting in the room: only curtain light and pendant lamps by the bed.

4. Gloss and lots of velvet

Designers Oksana Lobanova and Svetlana Zhdanova “collided surfaces in the room that are visually and tactilely contrasting. As a result, the velvet upholstery of the bed and the footboard and the carpet of a similar texture perfectly complemented the wall, finished with glossy panels.

Gray color in the interior: 90+ photos, design examples

Gray interior features

A number of color nuances:

  • Dark gray tones, in large quantities, tend to make the atmosphere gloomy and too strict, as well as visually reduce the room.
  • Neutral whites, browns or blacks are best suited for color combinations.
  • Gray is an excellent base for creating bright accents. For example, red or orange blotches will look especially juicy against such a neutral background.

Psychology of gray color

Gray color enhances confidence, pragmatism and intelligence in a person. From the point of view of psychology, this color scheme is the personification of calmness, balance and security.

Negative qualities include the possible occurrence of such emotions as feelings of melancholy, fatigue, reduced creativity and increased depression. Neutral light shades are conducive to relaxation and rest.

The photo shows the interior of a teenager's bedroom in the attic, made in gray tones.

Shades of gray

Modern design uses a wide variety of shades, such as pearl grey, metallic, ash, linen, wet asphalt and many other tones, which are the perfect and unobtrusive backdrop for rich accents.

Pictured is warm gray in a Scandinavian style living room.

Especially fresh, stylish and solemn, silver tones look in the room. For those who like a discreet and non-irritating design, light gray colors are perfect. A very spectacular look is distinguished by a graphite shade in a matte finish without too much shine. Such a combination will be an advantageous addition to the chrome parts.

Gray sofa in the interior

A bed in such a noble color scheme will endow a bedroom with a mysterious eclecticism, a chest of drawers or a closet, bring soft elegance to the nursery, and all kinds of furniture sets will make the living room environment more sophisticated and refined. nine0003

A sofa with graphite leather upholstery will be the perfect complement to your decor. Items in the form of tables, chairs and other things can also have black, white, brown or coffee colors. As bright accents, objects in red, green, yellow or red tones are suitable.

The photo shows a white wardrobe in a gray room.

Textile

Restrained beauty, nobility, elegance and solidity, will give the interior a smoky palette. Light gray furnishings in combination with steel or anthracite curtains will create a mysterious and ambiguous atmosphere in the room. To noticeably ennoble the room and endow it with elegance and fashion, tulle, complemented by curtains of slate, mouse, gray or lead color, will allow. nine0003

A gray carpet or a black carpet will become a universal decor, which is a classic and win-win option. When harmoniously combined with the surrounding design, they will make it more holistic and thoughtful.
