What are kitchen sinks? We analyze the material of manufacture, shapes and design features
Each housewife spends a considerable part of her time in the kitchen, washing dishes and preparing food for cooking. The time spent in the kitchen and the efficiency of work depend on the convenience of using the kitchen sink.

- Video: choosing a kitchen sink
Modern manufacturers offer many types of kitchen sinks that differ in the material of manufacture, design, installation method, so choosing the best option is not an easy task. Ignorance of which sinks are better to install, taking into account the characteristics of the materials, leads to the fact that, if used incorrectly, you will have to change an expensive sink, as well as the countertop itself.
Contemporary kitchen sinks come in a wide range of materials, colors, shapes and sizes. Often they not only fulfill their intended purpose (washing dishes), but also assist in cooking by providing additional bowls and wings.
Most of them are made to order, thanks to which you can easily choose the design and design for a particular kitchen set, organically fit the sink into the interior of the kitchen, choosing the appropriate color and material.
Production material
Recently, few people make enameled cast-iron sinks for kitchens according to the Soviet model, they have been replaced by sinks made of modern practical and aesthetic materials that fit perfectly into the interior of the kitchen.
Modern materials make it easy to make an integrated sink and countertop
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is a common material for kitchen sinks.
There are several types of stainless steel sinks: textured, polished and matte, the first type is popular because of the rough surface, on which scratches and traces of water are invisible.
Also, stainless steel sinks are divided into two types according to the production method: seamless and welded, the latter are made of thicker steel, which makes it possible to fix the mixer with high quality, which will not move during operation, and reduce the noise of falling water. Additionally, to reduce noise when using the sink, a special rubber pad is glued to its bottom.
Features:
- Low cost. Stainless steel sinks are the most budget-friendly option of all types.
- Decorative. Stainless steel products have an aesthetic appearance, a wide range of shapes and sizes.
- Possibility of self-installation. Typically, these types are used for installation in free-standing bedside tables, so installing a standard tabletop-sized model on top of it is not difficult.
- Chemical resistance . Stainless steel is not affected by most chemicals used in everyday life, is not afraid of high temperatures and their differences, and is highly wear resistant.
Stainless steel - one of the most affordable options with many positive qualities
The disadvantage is noise, and susceptibility to scratches on a glossy surface and poor resistance to impact from sharp objects - dents remain on thin stainless steel, sometimes it can be punched.
Ceramic
Ceramic is a traditional washbasin material with the following properties:
- Aesthetic . Ceramic products have always been distinguished by their beauty, the material has a smooth glossy surface and a wide range of colors that allows you to aesthetically fit a ceramic sink into any kitchen set; most of all, such sinks are suitable for classic-style kitchens.
- Easy care and durability . The surface is very easy to clean, resistant to scratches, temperature changes in a wide range, aggressive chemicals.
- Brittleness . The main disadvantage of ceramics is that when heavy objects fall, there is a high probability of irreversible cracks and chips, the sink can be broken.
- DIY installation . In most cases, the installation of a ceramic sink is not particularly difficult, its own weight can be a hindrance, which will require a stronger and more stable cabinet under the sink.
In addition to sanitary ware, from which modern sinks are made, there are kitchen sinks made of porcelain. Such products are even more resistant to chemicals and high temperatures, they are distinguished by increased strength (they are more difficult to break) and wear resistance.
Ceramics - a material that will look great in any interior, but it is quite fragile, so you need to handle it carefully
Artificial stone
Modern material from the above, there are two types based on natural components - agglomerate and acrylic stone.
Products fit perfectly into countertops made of artificial and natural stone, their distinctive features:
- Decorative. Products made of artificial stone are the undisputed leaders among other types of sinks in terms of color, pattern and texture. Available in various sizes and shapes, a wide range of models allows you to choose any suitable sink.
- The advantage of artificial stone is the possibility of making countertops and sinks from the same material. This gives the kitchen an aesthetic appearance - the sink does not stand out, but merges with the countertop.
- Sustainability. Withstands high temperatures, detergents and harsh chemicals and is wear resistant.
The disadvantages are - high cost compared to other types, also acrylic types are inferior in quality to agglomerate ones - they are prone to scratches and can be damaged when too hot kitchen items are placed on their surface.
Stone products will fit perfectly into almost any interior
Functionality
To increase the usability of sinks, sinks can be designed with the addition of additional elements.
Sections and bowls
Models with more than one bowl are divided into sections.
Common options are one-and-a-half, in which the bowl is half the size of the main one, or double ones with two identical bowls.
The presence of several bowls requires the constant movement of the mixer, which imposes too high quality requirements on it. The solution is to install a special faucet with a built-in shower head. This option has no alternative when using more than two bowls in the sink.

Wings
An additional surface protruding beyond the main dimensions is very useful for performing various functions: setting hot dishes (pans, baking sheets), defrosting and preparing food for processing, drying washed dishes. As with bowls, sinks come with one or two wings.
Tip!
When choosing, you should pay attention to the design of the wing - it is better if it has grooves with a slight slope, in which case the water will flow directly into the sink.
Wings can be of various formats, so it is easy to choose an option for your interior
Basic shapes
Modern products are produced not only by individual large manufacturers, but are also made by small firms to order, so the range of sizes and shapes is unlimited.
Considering the shape of shells, you should focus on common types:
- Square . The classic form of a single sink for a standard countertop.
- Round or oval . The diameter of a standard round sink is about 45 cm, this shape is more suitable for round kitchen utensils, with the same ease of use it takes up less space on the countertop than a square one. It looks compact, the option is better suited for installation in a corner tabletop.
- Rectangle. The most practical form of sink for conventional worktops, allowing them to be equipped with additional bowls or wings.
- Angle. Specially shaped sink for placement in a corner, making optimal use of available space. As with rectangular views, additional bowls and wings can be placed in the corner.
Less common are sinks in the shape of a triangle and a trapezoid, sometimes a combination of different shapes is used in the design solution, this is more often implemented in corner models.
Type of installation
Sinks are installed in kitchen furniture in four ways:
Surface-mounted type
Such sinks are used in modular kitchen designs - the sink is installed on a stand-alone cabinet on the entire countertop, replacing it.
In this case, in order to obtain the required thickness, comparable to the main worktop, the thin metal of the sink around the perimeter is sort of stretched onto a wooden frame. If the sink is not included in the finished kitchen kit, it is not difficult to install it on top of the cabinets yourself - all sizes of kitchen sinks and sets are standardized.
The disadvantage of this design is the increased likelihood of water getting on the side walls of the cabinet under the sink.
Surface-mounted sinks must be installed with great care to avoid problems.
Mortise
A common installation option in kitchens with a single countertop. If the countertop is made from a common laminated chipboard, fiberboard or wood, after much torment, you can cut the required holes with a thickness of 40 mm. without special tool and install by yourself.
Otherwise, when using a worktop made of artificial or natural stone, metal, glass, etc. materials, you will need the help of a specialist or a special tool to cut these materials. In the vast majority of cases, kitchen sets with expensive countertops are made to order and the hole for the sink is cut out during manufacture.
The disadvantage of this type of installation is the possibility of moisture penetrating under the sink to the place where the hole was cut - in the case of using cheap fiberboard and chipboard, the material in this place may warp and swell. To avoid this, the cut edges are treated with water-repellent materials (sealant, waterproof paint).
Mortise type, if installed incorrectly, can accumulate moisture underneath
Integrated type
In this type of installation, the sink is integral with the countertop, its rim is flush with its surface or protrudes slightly. Products of this type of installation are always made to order, no one installs them on their own.
The disadvantage is the difficult maintainability of the structure - in case of irreversible damage, both elements will have to be replaced.
Combined countertop and sink is quite a convenient solution for arranging the working area of the kitchen
Undermount type
Varieties of the integrated type, the sink in this case is located below the level of the countertop.
Design features require the water resistance of the entire worktop material, not just the surface. This requirement is fully satisfied by natural stone (marble, granite), in the countertops from which sinks of this subspecies are mounted.

Mounting types for kitchen sinks
Kitchen sinks are an indispensable attribute, without which no modern kitchen can do. In the recent past, the consumer's choice of this device was limited to almost a single type - a white enameled sink, which was available in the homes of millions of our compatriots. Now the choice of sinks is simply huge, they differ from each other in shape, size, color, material, as well as the installation method, depending on the various types of kitchen sets and surfaces on which they are supposed to be installed.
Which type of installation is best for a sink?
Inset sink.
Installation of such sinks is carried out by cutting them into the countertop of the kitchen set. Almost anyone can install into an MDF surface, since, as a rule, there are no difficulties. If the working surface of the kitchen is made of stone or hardwood, then the installation of this kitchen attribute should be entrusted to specialists. The material for the manufacture of the sinks themselves is synthetic stone or stainless steel.
The installation of a mortise sink is made directly into the countertop, for which a hole is cut out in it, corresponding to the dimensions of the sink. As a rule, a template is attached to stainless sinks, according to which it is easy to cut a hole of the desired diameter. If there is no such template or a stone sink is being installed, then the following procedure should be followed:
- mark the location of the sink on the worktop;
- Place the sink face down on the worktop and trace its outline with a pencil;
- having removed the shell, draw another circle inside the resulting circle 1 cm smaller than the previous one;
- cut a hole on the second (smaller) diameter;
- to install using the existing fasteners.
This type of sink is most in demand among the consumer, due to a variety of designs, various shapes and sizes, as well as the presence of additional accessories (cutting boards, baskets, dispensers and other devices to optimize the cooking process).
A variety of mortise sinks is a sink that is installed at the level of the countertop. Such sinks are very aesthetic, but may not be installed on all types of surfaces. Usually they are installed in surfaces made of plastic or artificial stone. To install such a sink in the countertop, a part of the material is sawn along the contour of the future sink to the thickness of its side, which is recessed into the material of the countertop. Such sinks are made of stainless steel and artificial stone. Stone sinks of this type are made with a beveled edge so that the sealant used during installation is not visible when the work is completed.
Kitchen surfaces with such sinks are easy to maintain, so they are installed quite often.
Surface-mounted sink.
Such types are considered the most budgetary and are used mainly in modular kitchens, as well as in freestanding cabinets equipped with sinks. For the correct installation of this washing attachment, it must match the dimensions of the cabinet on which it is installed. Currently, shells of this kind are in less demand due to the fact that they are inferior in aesthetics to the previous type, but their functionality is quite high. Such sinks, as a rule, are capacious in volume, can be with several bowls and have an additional place on which you can place dishes during washing, defrost food.
Universal sinks.
In addition to the listed types, there are sinks that have a flat edge, which allows them to be mounted both on top of the surface and cutting inward. Such sinks are made of thicker steel, which makes its installation universal.
