How does a reed diffuser work?
CosmopolitanIt's simple, actually! When you buy a reed diffuser, it'll be in a set that includes a vessel of some sort (typically, it's made of glass), a scented oil, and bamboo or rattan sticks. To activate it, all you have to do is pour the oil into the vessel and place the sticks inside. The fragrance will rise up to the top of the sticks and ~diffuse~ the aromas into the air once it reaches the tips of them. FYI: The more reeds you add, the more intense and potent the scent will be.
And if you want even more of the scent (I mean, who wouldn't), let the sticks soak for 24 to 48 hours then flip the sticks to fill your room with a fresh waft of the fragrance. Repeat this cycle every two to three days. Enjoy!
How long do reed diffusers last?
CosmopolitanThis really depends on a lot of things like how many reeds were utilized, the design of the vessel, and/or how much oil was used… So it can vary! They'll definitely last at least a month—but do, on average, have a life expectancy of two to five months.
Some things you can do to help your reed diffusers last longer are to reduce the number of reeds you use and flip the reeds less. Yes, I know these are both ways to really strengthen the delightful aromas. Though they can also run your fragrance oil out quickly. We're not saying to never use a lot of reeds or never flip them, but maybe do so every once in a while when you really, really want to. We know you'd rather not be dropping $$$ once a month on reed diffusers!

Where's the best place to put a reed diffuser?
CosmopolitanThe ideal space to keep a reed diffuser is in a high foot-traffic area, somewhere with a lot of movement and activity. Reed diffusers rely on air circulation for their scent to spread, so a spot that you know will have a lot of airflow is where you want it to be. We suggest your bedroom, living room, office, bathroom, or at the entryway of your home.
Make sure to not have it next to a fan, window, or air conditioner though! Strong air circulation can cause the scent to dissipate fast. Also, try to keep it away from direct sunlight so that the heat doesn't evaporate the oil.

Nest is known for high-quality scented candles, and you can expect nothing less from the brand's reed diffuser. The set comes with an etched glass jar reminiscent of a tiny flower vase, 8.5 ounces of fragrance oil, and eight chic black bamboo sticks. You can use all eight reeds at once for a more noticeable aroma or just a few for a subtler scent. The reed sticks soak up the oil, then release a continuous fragrance into your home for three months. You can also flip the sticks over every week or so to refresh the scent.
This top-shelf kit is available in 21 fragrances. There's lemon-mint, apricot tea, Sicilian tangerine, grapefruit, birchwood pine, lemongrass-ginger, and Mediterranean fig—to name just a few. Many of the scents align with Nest's scented candles, soaps, and linen sprays, so you can use corresponding products throughout your home as needed. There's a lot to love about this reed-diffusing set. We only wish the price were a bit more accessible.

Shopping for someone else? As with Homesick's popular U.S. state-inspired scented candles, the brand's reed diffusers make an excellent gift. This set comes with a glass bottle, eight bamboo sticks, and 4 ounces of aromatherapy scented oil, all in a wrappable box.
The nostalgic fragrances range from city names, such as New York and Los Angeles, to holiday-inspired concoctions, like Pumpkin Picking and The Nutcracker. Though the oil is supposed to release a scent for up to three months, it's somewhat faint compared to others and may not be noticeable in large rooms. What We Don't Like
When it comes to home fragrance, one of the most popular scents is Capri Blue’s Volcano – a deeply blue-hued glass candle that emits a wonderful tropical smell. Capri Blue has taken its much-loved fragrance beyond a traditional candle, though, and turned it into an easy-to-use reed oil diffuser that you can use without lighting a flame (or worrying about leaving it lit for hours!) Fans of Capri Blue note that this reed diffuser smells just like the original candle, and there are even additional fragrances to choose from if you’d like something a little different. With a strongly-scented hand-poured oil blend, you’ll be able to fill bedrooms both large and small with its great smell. This diffuser is particularly great for those looking to brighten up their bedroom with a scent that’s energizing and enticing.
However, there isn’t a wide range of fragrance options; if you aren’t a fan of Capri Blue’s Volcano or two other scents, there’s not much else to choose from. Additionally, some customers note that if you have a smaller bedroom, the scent can be pretty strong. Overall, though, if it’s a familiar fragrance you want to bring right into your home, this potent diffuser delivers.

Pottery Barn's simple yet classy reed diffuser comes with a square glass bottle and 10 ounces of oil. This makes it ideal for living rooms and other large spaces. Though it only comes with five sticks, they're relatively thick, so they can soak up more of the fragrance.
The set is available in scent profiles inspired by each of the four seasons. There's pink jasmine for spring, fresh summery linen, fern for fall, and wintry Pacific grove. If you want a reed diffuser that’ll deliver continuous fragrance without leaving you worrying about refill on the regular, we love Voluspa’s Reed Diffuser. Available in a wide selection of different scents, you can customize how your space smells with options that are crisp and airy, like a blend of Eucalyptus and White Sage, or vibrant and fruity, like Sijo Persimmon. Best of all, each of Voluspa’s oil fragrance blends is designed to last anywhere from four to six months in total, giving you as much as a month or more in lifespan compared to the typical reed diffuser.
Additionally, we love that the fragrance blend itself is made without chemical additives. Each variety is free of phthalates, pesticides, parabens, and sulfates, and as an added bonus they’re never tested on animals. Just keep in mind that the fragrances do vary; some are stronger than others, so it may take a little trial and error to find one that’s ideal for your preferences.

What We Don’t Like
If you’re searching for a diffuser that’s well-sized for small spaces, the Floral Street Reed Diffuser is the perfect fit. With a bottle that holds just 3.4 ounces of essential oil, this diffuser can offer months of light fragrance without overwhelming smaller bedrooms, living rooms, and offices. Plus, if you’re concerned about the ingredients inside the oil-based fragrance you’re breathing in, Floral Street only uses cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainably sourced ingredients. Each scent is made without additives like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, and pigments, And even the packaging and reeds are smartly selected; they’re recyclable and FSC certified!
We like Floral Street’s reed diffuser for small spaces only; the smaller size of the glass bottle means this diffuser holds less oil, which makes it less potent (and even imperceptible) in large rooms or open areas. It also runs more expensive, but due to the high-quality oil and cruelty-free nature, it’s a worthwhile investment for those who want to prioritize top-tier and sustainable ingredients.

Final Verdict
Our top pick is the Nest New York Bamboo Reed Diffuser, which earned high marks for its thoughtful design and long-lasting fragrance. That said, the Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser is another great option sold at a fraction of the price.
Size
When choosing a reed diffuser, you’ll want to consider the size of both the bottle (or diffuser) and the reeds (which work to bring the fragrance into your space). There’s no “right” size for a reed diffuser; it’s entirely up to you, and how strong you’d like the diffuser’s fragrance to be. Interior designer Emerie Forehand recommends paying attention to the size. This includes the dimensions of the bottle and sticks, as well as how many ounces of oil it comes with. "Select one that will blend in as an accessory but is still large enough to fill each space," Forehand says.
Larger diffusers with longer reeds, as well as more reeds per bottle, tend to offer longer scent lifespans and deliver a stronger scent throughout your space. The bigger the bottle, the more fragrance oil a reed diffuser can hold and disperse. Similarly, the more reeds you use–and the longer they are–the more reach the fragrance will have.
Ingredients
The fragrances and oil blends used in your typical reed diffuser aren’t any different from what you’d add into an electric diffuser. They’re your basic (and highly fragrant) essential oils! While most retailers that offer reed diffusers will also sell different essential oils and oil blends designed to be used with the diffuser, you can also choose to purchase these separately. In any case, you want to look for oils that are made with high-quality ingredients. Some can be made with alcohol and additives like parabens and phthalates; if you want to ensure you’re breathing in a “clean” fragrance, look for oils that don’t contain these. Instead, oils that are 100 percent natural, certified USDA organic, and made with natural ingredients rather than synthetic fragrances are best.
Fragrance
Choosing the fragrance your reed diffuser gives off is easy, but it’s an important consideration. Some fragrance oils are stronger than others, offering more potent scents. While some people may want a strong fragrance, others may want something lighter and more subtle. So, how do you choose? Think about the space you’ll be using your reed diffuser in and how you’d like to feel. Scents set the mood–for example, a soothing fragrance like lavender can calm the mind and help instill relaxation. Alternatively, citrus can be refreshing, bright, and energizing.
"The aromas of essential oils have so much potential to influence your emotions and overall well-being for the better," Forehand says. From calming florals and romantic musks to energizing citrus and earthy blends, there's something for everyone.
Lifespan
Different reed diffusers offer different lifespans, or lengths of time they emit fragrance. While these diffusers are pretty hands-off in terms of maintenance and use, they do eventually weaken in fragrance and use up all of their scented essential oils. In general, to extend the lifespan, you’ll want to flip the reeds over once each week. After about three months, the fragrance will have dissipated completely. However, depending on the size of the diffuser bottle, how much oil it contains, and the size or length of your reeds, you may be able to get another month or few weeks out of your particular diffuser.
Refills
It’s always a good idea to consider what kinds of refills you’ll need to use with any particular reed diffuser. Can you choose any essential oils and oil blends, or will you need to stick with a particular brand or blends of ingredients? Each reed diffuser is different, and can hold different amounts of oil, so make sure to look into the details of what works best for the products you’re most interested in.
FAQ
-
Reed diffusers typically come with some sort of vessel, usually a glass bottle, plus scented oil and bamboo or rattan sticks. When you fill the bottle with the oil and place the sticks inside, they absorb the fragrance and eventually disperse it into the air.
-
Reed diffusers last anywhere from two to five months. The scent life span depends on a few factors, including the potency of the fragrance, the size and shape of the bottle, how much oil is used, and how many sticks are placed inside. Flipping the reeds periodically can help prevent the aroma from fading.
-
"High-traffic areas work great so that the aromas can move through the space," says Forehand, noting that placing it near a door, open window, or air vent can dilute the scent. Since reed diffusers generally don't have very large coverage areas, they're also often ideal for smaller areas, like bathrooms, bedrooms, and home offices.

How to use the stick diffuser?
Each house and each apartment has its own special smell. It is this smell that is associated with home comfort and the comfort of your home. Therefore, filling your home with pleasant aromas is a completely natural desire of any person.
It is important to choose the right fragrance for your home, because it is what you will smell every day when you come home. In addition, pleasant aromas have a positive effect on your well-being and mood. Even if you are used to the smell and have ceased to feel it as intensely as before, your subconscious mind still picks up this signal, and you feel more comfortable.
The simplest, most popular and most effective way to scent your home today is with an aroma diffuser with sticks. This is an unobtrusive and aesthetic solution for any room.
Aroma diffuser with sticks consists of three components:
- Glass bottle with a narrow neck
- Aroma liquid
- Sticks
The shape and design of the bottle can be absolutely any narrower thanks to their stylish appearance interior.
There are two types of aromatic liquid - oil-based and alcohol-based.
- Oil-based fillers have a milder fragrance and take longer to evaporate. For example, BAGO home oil-based home fragrances with a volume of only 100 ml will evaporate for 8 weeks. And home fragrances from Mr & Mrs Fragrance with a volume of 250 ml will delight you with their fragrance for more than two months.
- Alcohol-based fillers have a brighter, richer flavor, but evaporate faster because the alcohol molecules are more volatile than oil. Such home fragrances include Maison Berger or St Eval candle co.
Depending on the type of base, different sticks must be used. For alcohol, reed, rattan, willow or bamboo are usually used. For the oil base - fiberglass sticks. It is made from pressed cotton.
The sticks are inserted into a bottle of perfumed liquid, soaked in fragrance and released into the environment. The intensity of aromatization is regulated by the number of sticks inserted. The more of them, the more intense the aromatization will be. But the liquid will evaporate faster.
After the fragrance liquid has completely evaporated, it is not necessary to purchase a new diffuser. You can buy a replacement fragrance, the same as it was, or a different one, and use the diffuser again. The pores of the sticks get clogged over time and they also need to be changed. - When starting to use the diffuser, start with three or four sticks. In a few hours you will feel the result. You can add or remove sticks as you wish.
- Wooden sticks can be turned upside down after a month to enhance the scent. If you prefer a stronger scent, you can turn the sticks over more often, once every couple of weeks.
- When leaving the house for a long time, it is not superfluous to take out the sticks and close the bottle so that the aromatic liquid does not evaporate while you are away.
- Experience shows that if the diffuser is placed in the shade, the fragrance will be more subtle and soft. When the diffuser is placed in the sun, the sound of the aromatic composition will be brighter.

Are incense sticks harmful: we analyze the composition
Typical composition of an incense stick: herbal/wood powder, aromatic material, adhesive and bamboo fiber.
Oriental incense is made from plants such as patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver. They are collected, ground in a large mortar with a pestle, mixed with water to a paste-like consistency, and then a little saltpeter is added to ensure that the mixture burns evenly. Next, the product is given the desired shape and sent for sale.
In India, incense sticks are made from bamboo and coated with an aromatic mixture. Bamboo fiber has excellent absorbent properties, and therefore it is abundantly impregnated with aromatic mixtures and exudes them evenly when burned.
You can buy incense sticks of two types - from natural or synthetic raw materials. In the first case, the wood base is impregnated with natural essential oils of flowers, fruits and trees, which are useful to inhale to restore vitality and energy. Secondly, bamboo is impregnated with aromatic oils created in the laboratory from synthetic substances. Such incense sticks are used exclusively for aromatizing the space and cleansing it from negative energy according to Feng Shui. Such aroma gadgets are completely devoid of a therapeutic effect.
Thus, the answer to the question: “Are incense sticks harmful to health?” depends on their composition. If it is 100% natural, made from wood and first-class essential oils, then you can safely use it for meditation or aromatherapy to calm your nerves or relieve stress. Burn incense in a well-ventilated area several times a week, but not every day. It is also not recommended to light several sticks, one incense is enough.
Safe incense sticks have a natural composition, consisting of organic essences (not derivatives of oil), charcoal, natural resins, herbs, leaves and bark. These include masala - a natural Indian product in which herbs and flavors are mixed.
A good frankincense has a distinct, understandable smell that you inhale and immediately feel the positive effect. At the moment, aroma sticks are one of the most effective tools for dealing with emotional problems: anxiety, fear, anxiety, insecurity. The best assistant in these matters is the scent of a rose.

How to properly burn incense sticks
No. 1. Hold a lighter or match to the end of the stick and light it until the end turns red. The incense will burn for 10 seconds and then go out on its own.
You should see glowing embers, which, under the influence of a red light, advance to the end of the wand. If something went wrong and you see motionless ash on the tip of the incense, try lighting it again.
No. 2. Gently blow on the burning tip of the incense to ignite it and release wisps of smoke. After about 30 seconds, you will smell it. If there is no red coal and no fragrance, then you have completely extinguished the incense and you will have to light it again. When you blow, put your hand behind the flame.
No. 3. Insert the stick into the incense holder. You can install it vertically or horizontally. In each of these cases, make sure that the ash from the tip of the incense stick falls on the stand, and not on the furniture or carpet. If you bought aroma sticks, but you don't have a stand, make your own - just fill the glass with rice, sand or salt.
No. 4. Let the incense burn completely. It usually takes him 20-30 minutes to do this. The time depends on the thickness and length of the product. Never leave incense unattended. If you need to urgently leave the house, dip the burning tip of the aroma stick into a glass of water. Always carry out aromatherapy away from curtains and other flammable surfaces. Keep incense out of the reach of children and pets. Do not put an open window on the windowsill so that the wind does not overturn the incense.
