Although this won’t be possible with all staircase layouts, if you can, it absolutely pays off to try this idea if you can. 25 staircase ideas to take your home to the next step of style

In more homes than not, the very first thing you will see upon entering are the stairs and hallway. The right staircase ideas can make all the difference in achieving the perfect first impression.

Of course, the staircase doesn't standalone, it needs to work with your hallway ideas to create cohesion. Really think about what you want your home to say when people enter it. The hallway and staircase will set the design tone for the rest of the house.

'A staircase can really impact a space,' says James Murray, Senior Staircase Designer, Neville Johnson . 'It can transform a hallway from the messy, cluttered area that it so often becomes, and into a bright and welcoming entrance to your home.'

'Think about what style you want and be sympathetic to the style and age of the house,' continues James. 'Consider other timbers in the home and tone in with these colours so the staircase can sit alongside other materials without clashing.'

It's not all about just the structural wood that makes a difference. Make a statement with wallpaper, paint and textiles. Paint the risers in a descending or ascending rainbow of colours, or stick on decorative tiles for instant impact.

Use wallpaper or old maps to add interest to each tread or paint the whole shebang in a favourite colour. You could even paint the spindles and bannister rail to suit your fancy and position wall stickers up the staircase walls or on the facing walls on each half landing.

Staircase ideas to inspire all homes

Our staircase ideas will ensure you make the right impression first time. So whether it's to make yourself smile or to wow guests, it's worth taking the time to create a focal point to admire.

1. Get colour drenching

Colour drenching is having a serious moment right now, and one place this decorating trick works especially well is in the hallway. Once you learn how to paint a staircase, you'll have so many possibilities on offer.

Paint the stairs, walls, radiator and even ceiling and/or floor in one shade to create a serious statement. To slightly adapt the trend, choose tonal colours for impact but without focusing entirely on one shade.

2. Be inspired by pretty patchworks

Whether you live in a country style home or simply love the chintz-ier things in life, a patchwork quilt may be an unexpected source of inspiration. Wallpaper the risers of your staircase ideas with different, non-matching prints and patterns.

To stop things from overwhelming, either stick to one colour palette or a one theme. For example, all floral based, polka dots, abstract designs...

3. Create a kids' zone

Keeping hallways neat and tidy in a family home is, well, something of a challenge. When settling on your staircase ideas, make sure you think about how your design could make your life a bit easier. The inclusion of a low-level coat rack, a bench, and individual baskets for shoes and outdoor paraphernalia will make sure everything has a home.

Keep things design led by painting the backdrop in a contrasting colour to that of the stairs themselves. This will also help visually zone off the area.

4. Co-ordinate with paint and wallpaper

Painting your woodwork black – or a very dark charcoal grey – can truly elevate a space to a more sophisticated level. Contrast with white walls for a fresh and modern look, or complement with a sultry navy blue or emerald green for even more drama. The stair runner adds a bright pop of colour and delicate pendant lighting accentuates the double-height ceiling.

5. Boost light levels

One thing which isn't considered as often as it should be is how much light a staircase can block off. Keep things light and bright with a few simple tricks. A glass bannister will allow sunlight to pass through, and keeping the treads in a pale wood or paint will encourage available light to bounce around.

Inbuilt footlights will also help on darker days, and into the evenings.

6.

Welcome pattern on the stairs

Not only will a pattern inject instant personality to a hallway colour scheme, it's also highly practical too. 'Patterns are perfect for high-traffic areas like hallways and staircases, where dust and dirt are repeatedly trodden into the carpet' says Jodie Hatton, Residential Designer at Brintons .

Before going on to say, 'We need little moments of joy throughout the home, so hallway decoration should be equally as smile-inducing as your living room or bedroom. It is the first space you see when returning from your daily walk, so why not make it special?'. We couldn't agree more with this sentiment.

Be bold with colour to create a statement but be mindful to keep it coordinated to achieve a cohesive colour scheme that feels well put together.  If using a rich colour on the walls, such is the case in this striking blue hallway colour scheme, echo the same colour on the stair runner or carpet. Here a blue trim is enough to add a subtle yet impactful accent to a neutral stair runner.

The natural rush carpet coordinates effortless with the natural wooden bannister and spindles, balancing the neutral elements with the more provocative use of bold colour.

8. Incorporate concealed cupboards

(Image credit: Future PLC/ David Giles)

Whatever your colour or style, adding stair rods is the ultimate way to finish a well-dressed staircase. The easy to fit option can be added at any point if you have a stair runner already in place and just feel it needs a perfect finishing touch.

9. Make a dramatic entrance

Rather than choose either a bold colour or a statement wallpaper to make a statement on your stairs why not use both? With a small space such as a staircase there's only a small area to cover so you can afford to be more daring when it comes to decorating choices. A bold colour will feel less overpowering in such a limited capacity, it will actually amplify a small space. If using wallpaper on a landing, like a feature wall, only one roll is mostly likely required – keeping the budget low too.

10. Make it personal with curated photos

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Brent Darby)

The stairway is the ideal place for a gallery wall. Choose matching frames and pictures with a theme. White is every gallery's preferred blank canvas, but a wooden bench and handrail add a little warmth to balance the look.

11. Keep the style simple

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Kasia Fizer)

Often a hallway can feel limiting on the style front, due to a lack of space – in which case, less is more.Using natural wood in a hallway can promote a Scandi aesthetic that leaves you breathing a sigh of relief as you walk through the door after a manic day.

Adding a potted plant or two can also enhance that calming sensation. Try to keep accessories to a minimum so that the overall affect is uncluttered and fresh.

12. Tile stair risers

The owners of this monochrome-themed home had considered a stair runner, but needed to stay on budget. Tiling the risers with a neat mosaic has not only saved them cash, but has created more impact and complements the decor elsewhere.

13. Incorporate concealed cupboards

(Image credit: Future PLC/ David Giles)

When space is tight you need to embrace every inch of space to fashion suitable storage solutions. This small living room idea shows how an awkward staircase can be utilised by making the underside become a concealed cupboard that serves as smart storage for the compact living room beneath.

14. Uplift a scheme with colour and pattern

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Colin Poole)

Rather than choose either a bold colour or a statement wallpaper to make a statement on your stairs why not use both? With a small space such as a staircase there's only a small area to cover so you can afford to be more daring when it comes to decorating choices.

A bold colour will feel less overpowering in such a limited capacity, it will actually amplify a small space. If using wallpaper on a landing, like a feature wall, only one roll is mostly likely required – keeping the budget low too.

15. Make it personal with curated photos

Your hallway isn't just an introduction to your home – it can also serve to give a flavour of your personality. This homeowner has used paint colours and artwork to get their bold, fun side across. A framed lunar calendar and a graphic skull print are just two of the conversation starters here.

16. Carpet for comfort

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Georgia Burns)

Carpet is a great choice for stairs – not only does it cushion your steps and absorb some of the noise as you and your family bound up and down the staircase, it's also durable. Given the stairs are one of the busiest thoroughfares in your home, that's key.

We'd recommend a tough wool or wool-blend carpet for a staircase, and ideally in a lighter colour. A stairwell can often be poorly lit, and choosing a darker shade will make the space look all the more gloomy and narrow. This needed make the space dull – here, palm print wallpaper adds vibrancy.

17. Create an ombre effect with paint

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Simon Whitmore)

Start by painting the treads to match your there woodwork, then choose a paint card in a colour you love and buy tester pots in as many shades as you have stairs.

Kick things off with the darkest at the bottom and work your way up, using a lighter shade on each riser until you reach the top.

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Chris Everard)

Bring your staircase to life by creating a fresh ombre effect. Paint each spindle a different shade using tester pots, but leave the handrail a natural wood.

Finish the rest of the stairway in white to keep the space light and show off your handiwork.

19. Wallpaper your treads with a bold pattern

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Jake Curtis)

The trick here is to go bold and graphic, but to keep things neutral elsewhere. Here, white walls are a backdrop to a bright red. You could also use pops of primary colours, such as yellow green or the blue chair seen here.

Like this idea? Follow our guide how to wallpaper your stairs – to add colour to your hallway.

20. Guide a path upwards

(Image credit: Future PLC / David Giles)

Use colour in a creative way on your stairs by painting the walls beside the steps, but only below the dado rail to create a border-like edge.

This simple strip of bold colour helps to guide the eye upwards, to highlight the incline of the staircase. In this otherwise all-white hallway the limited use of a bold blue border prevents the colour from feeling overpowering in airy bright space.

21. Soften the use of pattern with subtle colour

(Image credit: Future PLC/ David Brittain)

This is a different way of using wallpaper – alternating two complementary prints in pastel pink and green for a look that would suit a rustic cottage. If you're good with a paintbrush, you achieve the effect with stencils.

22. Commission cubbyholes for savvy storage

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Colin Poole)

If commissioning your staircase ideas, why not factor in some nifty open-plan shelving into the design for showing off your favourite ornaments and curios.

A carpenter can build the design so it cleverly uses the otherwise redundant space underneath the treads and risers to great effect to create capsules for storage and display as well as being a functioning staircase.

23. Match the treads to the walls

Here's a similar take on the same idea, but this time the walls have been painted in the second darkest colour. The choice of green is fresh and soothing and works well with natural wood flooring and furniture.

24. Add a window for natural light

(Image credit: Future PLC/ David Giles)

If your staircase ideas are looking dark and drab consider putting in a window to flood the staircase with plenty of natural light. Thanks to permitted development what  you can build without planning permission includes windows.

25. Roll out the red carpet

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Rachael Smith)

What better way to make guests feel welcome than giving your hallway the red carpet treatment? This claret colour is sophisticated and works wonderfully with on-trend grey hallway ideas.

How can I make my stairs look better?

How to make your stairs look better depends on the style of your home, and your own design preferences. That said, there are a few small but important additions which can seriously upgrade your staircase ideas.

'By updating and fitting new bannisters, treads, newels, and spindles, the whole staircase area can be completely transformed,' says James Murray, Senior Staircase Designer, Neville Johnson. 'Those all-important decorative touches, such as wrought iron spindles, can be used to introduce a touch of traditional elegance.'

Your choice of wood, and even glass, can also make all the difference. 'Oak creates an impression of warmth, quality and a sophistication,' advises James. 'Whilst Ash offers a lighter finish and a wilder grain for more visual variation.'

'The combination of oak paired with glass has become a very popular choice for hallway and staircase designs in recent years, particularly for more contemporary schemes,' James continues. 'Smoked oak helps to create a modern, stylish feel, and the addition of glass really opens up the space, allowing light to flood through, creating the impression of a bigger hallway area.'

How do I make stairs more interesting?

There are many ways to make stairs more interesting. If on budget you can simply paint stairs to transform your hallway with little cost. You can be imaginative with wallpaper and tiles to add pattern to the risers, adding a slither of decoration with each step. Of course carpet is also a brilliant way to make your stairs more interesting, also more comforting underfoot.

photo of the interior of the hall with a staircase to the second floor, ideas for finishing, choosing the style of a corridor with a staircase to the 2nd floor

What could be better for the classics than a wide chic staircase with railings and balusters in the middle of the reception hall? It is always impressive and "leads" the imagination into the world of luxury and prosperity.

Interior with a staircase in a private house

Design of a spacious hall suggests an interior with a wide staircase, voluminous flights with platforms. All hallway attributes are possible here: wardrobes, chests of drawers, dressing rooms, recreation areas with chairs and tables, smoking rooms and even a library. The place under the stairs is perfect for an office, a dressing room, a closet for household needs, a library.

A narrow hallway will prompt the design to install a "modest" staircase to the second floor along one of the walls. They, in turn, are decorated with paintings, elegant sources of artificial light (all kinds of lamps), mirrors to visually increase the spatial volume. Overall furniture with cabinets here will clearly be out of place.

Design: Nikita Morozov

Hall

This is the part of the house where new guests make their first acquaintance with the interior of the building. In front of them is a graceful staircase and the path to the second floor! Therefore, the best building and finishing materials are selected for this element of the interior: wood, glass, stone.

Corridor

This is an interchange, if not all, then many roads through a country house. It logically "rests" against the stairs to the second floor. In turn, this building serves as another decoration of the house, contributes to unhindered movement around the house, creating convenience and comfort for everyone living in a country house. The design of the stairs in the hallway does not provide for furniture, but is very attentive to finishing, decoration and decoration.

Design: Natalia Mitrakova

Entrance hall

This is a place just outside the front door where you can take off your outer clothes and put them on a hanger, take off your shoes and change into house slippers. Hallways are typical for dachas and small cottages. They make it possible, with the help of an unpretentious staircase, to quickly climb to the second floor, to the traditional recreation and peace area.

The design of an entrance hall in a private house with a staircase is based on building requirements for structures for lifting the second floor.

Hall finishing options

The design of the hall with a staircase seeks to combine all the nearest semantic zones into a single logically arranged space.

Hallway style with stairs

Most often in the hallway with stairs, designers choose classic and neutral style, country, provence and modern. Much depends on the preferences of the residents of a private house and its dimensions.

Classic

Road in execution, but charming and luxurious. There are natural wood in the furniture and decoration, marble, gilding, columns, stucco molding, balusters, artistic carvings. The color scheme is neutral with possible bright accents used for zoning the space. The staircase with flights is made of natural wood and marble.

Modern

Modern is modern and somewhat eclectic. He absorbed the details of minimalism, art deco, urbanism, hi-tech, not forgetting the elements of unforgettable classics. In the decoration of the stairs and the interior of the hallway, glass, metal, stained-glass windows, less often plastic are used. It is possible to use avant-garde colors in the design of the room. The Art Nouveau staircase looks impressive with neon lights on the marches.

Country

Focuses on textiles and natural materials in the finishing and execution of furniture, including natural stone. The staircase to the second floor is made of wood with a natural texture and stone. The place of classic oak, mahogany, cedar was taken by budgetary pine, fir, alder, walnut. The room is richly decorated with living plants.

Hi-tech

Selects stairs to the second floor from special durable glass (acrylic, tempered, laminated), stone, metal, chrome and nickel-plated decorative elements. They are strong and durable. The interior is also selected with metallic notes. The contrast of white and black looks spectacular.

Neutral style

Gives the design a whirlwind: any stair shape is appropriate; materials in construction, decoration, decoration; color solutions. This is due to the fact that this architectural attribute is not given the main place, unlike other styles. The main task assigned to the staircase is “not to shine”: not to stand out and “not to arrange” dissonance. The details of the structure should be in harmony with the details of the interior of the room, color, texture.

Design features

Rotary flight and spiral staircases are optimal for small spaces. The second option can be installed anywhere, it requires little space, it is easy to build. After all, the rise is carried out in a circle. Rotary mid-flight structures are also structurally simple, but more comfortable for climbing to the second floor. In summer cottages, there is still an easier way to go upstairs - a ladder. This is neither safe nor practical. However, it provides the hallway with more free space.

To choose a staircase design, you need to decide which result will be preferable:

Structures:

Staircase cabinet

Optimum use of the space occupied by flights of stairs has always aroused great interest among the customers of lifting structures. Designers, in turn, offer many options for arranging the room under the stairs. Undoubtedly, it all depends on the size, but even medium designs "give" the possibility of arranging a closet under the stairs.

It can be open or closed, it all depends on the goal: the location of the niche next to the wall, away from the eyes will help to abandon the doors. The cabinet can perform several functions: “accept” clothes, store canned food preparations, household items, books.

Resting place by the window

If the window faces one of the flights of stairs, which in turn is spacious, it is possible to think about creating a recreation area. A small table (coffee table, coffee table), a couple of chairs (or maybe armchairs will come in ?!) is installed here. Voila: there is a place for reading, working with a computer, a pleasant conversation over a cup of coffee or tea. And what a view can open!

The second option is to organize a recreation area on the windowsill. However, we have already talked about this.

On the video: the design of the hall in a private house with a staircase.

design rules, 75 photo ideas

Entering the house, first of all, a person enters the corridor. The entrance hall is able to make the first impression of the entire home. Therefore, it is important to design it correctly, emphasizing the advantages and hiding the shortcomings. The design of the hall with a staircase has a number of nuances, considering which you can combine beauty and functionality.

The entrance hall is the first room we see when entering the house.

The first impression of the entire household depends on how this room is decorated.

Design of a hallway with stairs in a private house

Stairs can be easily turned into a highlight, a key decoration of the corridor if the room is properly decorated. More often for the hall they choose classics, modern or country. The first option is distinguished by the use of neutral tones, natural materials. The style is luxurious, so you have to invest large sums in design. It is important to observe moderation and not overdo it, otherwise everything will look cheap.

Staircase in the interior of a country lady can become a real decoration.

Art Nouveau is outrageous and modern. Materials are predominantly plastic, glass and metal surfaces. Staircase lighting is a great addition.

Staircase visually creates a perspective, optically expanding the space.

Country fully reflects the rustic style. It creates a rural cosiness and is distinguished by the use of natural colors and natural wood.

Usually such wealth as a spacious hall in a private house does not go to everyone.

Requirements for the construction of stairs in the house

The interior of the hall with a staircase will look harmonious, subject to certain recommendations. After all, the design is central in the room and certain requirements are imposed on it.

The drafting of the stairs to the 2nd floor must be approached with all responsibility.

  1. Good lighting in the room. Otherwise, there is a chance of injury in the dark. It is preferable to place a spot light, sconce, or several full-fledged powerful chandeliers.
  2. For visual zoning of the territory near the stairs, use an accent item. A large plant, a beautiful ottoman, a compact table will do;
  3. Cover the steps with a rug to reduce the size of the structure;
  4. March dimensions must be identical along the entire length. It is recommended to choose an odd number of steps.
  5. The angle of elevation should vary from 25 to 45 degrees and the railing should be about 90 cm high.
  6. To increase the functionality of the design of the hall with a staircase, use the available space below it.

A wardrobe or storage system for various items will fit in well.

There are several preferred styles that fit the given conditions. They are reflected in the table.

Most often, the interior of a hallway with a staircase is found in private houses, but there are exceptions, such as two-level apartments.

Style Description
Classic Only valuable species of trees are used in the manufacture. Can be made from stone like marble or granite. The palette is restrained, the forms are distinguished by elegance. Add decorative elements in the form of carvings and swirls.
Hi-tech Use metal with a chrome finish. For an ornament, add glass or stone. Metal structures have many advantages, including long life and reliability. The ladder is strong and able to withstand heavy loads.
Minimalism Maximum integration of glass surfaces into the product. It can be used as a base. The foundation of the product is made of thickened glass. It has a high degree of strength.

Can be made from concrete. The design is not remarkable, it has good strength. You can add other materials as an addition to make the product zest.

In addition to its direct purpose - the connection of two tiers - this design also serves as a decoration of the entrance part of the interior (corridor, hall).

Wood is a classic material. Especially if you plan to create a country style. If it is not possible to use expensive species, pay attention to larch, cherry or maple.

Being the first room that guests see, the design of the entrance hall with stairs requires careful planning.

The following construction types are available.

  1. Marching. The steps are made in the form of a continuous row. There are several marches. This is influenced by the dimensions of the house and the height of the tiers.

Sometimes risers are added to make the space visually lighter.

  2. Screw. There are no marches. The staircase is a flight that has the shape of a spiral. Thanks to its impressive appearance, the product fits well into any design.

This type allows you to visually raise the ceiling.

Wardrobes under the stairs in the hallway

The ladder has impressive dimensions and takes up a lot of space. Therefore, it is important to use every available square meter as much as possible. Any area should be turned into a useful one. One option is to organize closets.

This will allow you to conveniently place bed linen, inventory and other things.

You can organize a small library. A smart solution would be to convert the closet into a place to store shoes and clothes. Combine practicality with beauty.

The cabinet will become not only a convenient storage system, but also a successful interior addition.

Provence style design

Provence is a French style based on the introduction of light colors.
