Country kitchen island with seating

Country kitchen island ideas: 10 stylish designs |

Country kitchen island ideas will give you extra storage and countertop space. Adding a country kitchen island enables you to create dedicated zones, too, providing an informal divide between the kitchen and adjacent living areas while still keeping the cook space involved in the social activity.

Indeed, a central kitchen island can serve a multitude of purposes – from being a preparation station to housing sinks, cookers and appliances – transforming the way in which you use your country kitchen. Extending the countertop and adding bar seating even provide a dining space that's perfect for quick breakfasts or entertaining.

‘Larger, fitted islands can be multi-functional, incorporating appliances, breakfast bars and many other elements. In smaller kitchens, a peninsula can often be a better alternative to a central island. This layout is less space hungry, but still has the same capacity for storage and multi-tasking,’ advises Richard Moore, design director at Martin Moore .

Country kitchen island ideas

While the country kitchen island as we know it is new, the concept of a versatile surface in the heart of the kitchen is not. In Medieval European kitchens a large wooden table dominated the room. Much bigger than the modern dining table, it was a workhorse that served as a place for everything from food preparation to dining.

Today's modern country kitchen island designs take inspiration from this tradition, incorporating a large table into the heart of the kitchen, while others are more aligned with cabinetry. Regardless of the style you choose, a country kitchen island may be the starting point for your kitchen layout, so that it efficiently bridges the gap between cooking and living. Here, we bring you the best ideas.

One of the largest draws to country kitchen islands are the social space that they create. When paired with a recessed section and bar-style kitchen island seating, they create an informal dining space that connects the functional kitchen with the rest of the room.

'It's no secret everyone wants to be in the kitchen – make sure to create ample seating for your crowd. When selecting a countertop, remember to account for overhang depth so your stools fit underneath,' advises Cortney Bishop principal designer and owner of Cortney Bishop Design .

Approximately 15 inches of kitchen countertop overhang will be sufficient to accommodate most styles of bar-seating.

'When creating island seating, I also purposely extend the side panels along the countertop's full width,' continues Cortney. 'This design allows the island to appear more like a piece of furniture while casually tucking the stools away from traffic flow.'

2. Consider size and shape of a country kitchen island

Regardless of whether you are researching country kitchen island ideas or are looking for more general advice on designing a kitchen island, the principles of the are the same.

First you need to ensure that the island does not become an obstruction. Ensure that there is at least 42 inches between the island and wall cabinets, as this will let two people pass each other without difficulty, and at least 60 inches between a wall and breakfast bar to allow chairs to be pulled out. At the same time, it is important that your island is not too distant from the rest of your cooking space. Ensure that any cooking zones are at most 9 feet away from one another.

This elegant design from Interior Impressions strikes a perfect balance offering a practical cooking space, complete with sink, as well as a spacious area for family and friends to take a seat.

3. Make the most of country views

As our kitchens are redesigned and rebuilt, we find ourselves prioritizing ways to increase natural light and space in equal measure. As such, glazed doors have quickly become a favorite feature, flooding the space with light while also providing seamless access to the garden.

When incorporated into country kitchen diners, particularly those that boast beautiful views of the countryside, doors can also define your entire kitchen's design. By positioning your country kitchen island in front of them, an ever-changing view while cooking will be on offer, while your cooking and entertaining space will be nice and bright.

Designed and crafted by Bert & May , this kitchen has cabinetry crafted from sustainable wood and solid oak dovetailed drawers topped while the country-style island is topped with a raw copper worktop that helps to reflect light in to the room.

4. Opt for a farmhouse table style country kitchen island

Country kitchen island ideas don't have to reflect your cabinetry. Instead, consider upgrading an antique farmhouse table with a stone countertop which can help to imbue your kitchen with a softer, country-inspired look, perfect for complementing other traditional kitchen ideas. If you don't want to use an actual table, other farmhouse kitchen island ideas include cabinetry inspired by workbenches and butcher's blocks, but with the style and functionality of a modern kitchen.

'To help tone down the utilitarian feel of the room I like to add antiques, art, soft furnishings and decorative items,' explains Henriette von Stockhausen, designer at VSP Interiors . 'Adding an island to the space helps with this, instantly becoming a relaxed place where someone can sit with a glass of wine and chat while the host is cooking, to prepare food, and a place to display some beautiful pots, flowers – a centerpiece of your kitchen.'

5. Incorporate a small country kitchen island in a compact space

Country kitchen islands are not just the preserve of expansive open plan spaces as even small kitchen ideas can benefit from the additional preparation space that country kitchen island ideas bring.

The key is to prioritize and streamline. First decide whether you want your country kitchen island to provide preparation space or a social, sitting area. This will help you to define the intention of your design. Secondly, ensure that no space is wasted. This country island, designed by Oakley Moore , prioritizes preparation space, while also incorporating open shelving on the end of the island and cabinetry on the reverse.

'Help your small kitchen island ideas stand out by using a different color to the rest of the cabinetry. Here we used a warm yellow from Benjamin Moore to work with the Fired Earth tiled backsplash whilst the rest of the space is very neutral. This is a great way to inject a little color in a neutral space,’ says Kate Aslangul, founder of Oakley Moore.

Classic designs are timeless for a reason, and so is the case with the quintessential country kitchen island. Channel Shaker kitchen ideas in your island design for a timeless piece that will complement any era of home. In this kitchen designed by Olive & Barr the tongue and grove panelling on the wall is reflected in the base of the island, while wooden countertops bring a natural edge to the scheme.

'Built-in chopping boards, oak slat shelves and easy-access drawers help to free up counter space, they also add characterful charm to the modern kitchen,' says Al Bruce, founder at Olive & Barr. 'It is important to incorporate storage solutions that utilize every inch of space too. Practical storage results in an organized and stress-free kitchen, even under the sink can be rescued from clutter with a pull out drawer and fixed shelves.'

7. Add a sink to your island to create a multifunctional space

(Image credit: Styleberry Creative Interiors /Madeline Harper Photography)

A multifunctional country kitchen island can transform the way in which you use your kitchen and so is the case for country kitchen island ideas. This design by Styleberry Interiors combines the best of both worlds by pairing a wooden countertop, ideal for food preparation, with a sleek marble countertop that adds practical elegance to the space. An excellently positioned sink divides the two areas offering the ideal counterpoint to the stove opposite. Together these four features create the perfect format to aid seamless cooking.

‘There is something about having a counter to lean on, set drinks or plates on, and be able to move freely around, that facilitates interaction. How many times have you been to a gathering and spent a significant amount of time in the kitchen chatting in this very spot? Add a place to sit, and I’d put money on someone having a cup of coffee and wanting to stay awhile,’ says Shawna Percival, founder of Styleberry Interiors.

8. Use different materials to serve different purposes

When you think of country kitchen island ideas, the first image that comes to mind will be a large rectangular block of solid cabinetry. However, this does not need to be the case, consider playing with textures and shapes to create a space that reflects your own needs and sense of design. This clever country kitchen island physically separates the preparation and entertaining spaces by elevating the latter. Not only does this offer a welcoming space for people to come and sit but also keeps the preparation area hidden from view, helping to maintain a minimalist aesthetic.

'Ensure country kitchen islands work as both a cooking and entertaining space by changing work surface materials to suit each area specifically. Opt for a softened textured wood for the entertaining area, while granites, zinc or stainless steel are ideal surfaces for cooking areas,' advises Alex Main, director at The Main Company . 'Create an L-shape seating area to ensure stools are not in one long line in order to aid conversation, too.'

9. Work in lighting to make the most of your country kitchen island

Your country kitchen island will serve as a space to cook, relax and entertain and as such it will need versatile lighting. A series of statement pendants will not only provide useful task lighting but also emphasize the island as the heart of the room. These antique French lights, from Kate Beard Lighting , make the perfect kitchen island lighting ideas for this elegant Martin Moore kitchen.

When considering pendant lights, it is also important to think about the cord. ‘No longer just a practical necessity, the cord is now a design essential that forms part of your lighting aesthetic,’ says Emily Butterill, founder of Glow Lighting .

Consider color, material and the amount of cord you want on display. ‘Over a dining table, pendants were historically mounted lower, but these days it is more about how formal a space you want to create. As a general rule, pendant lighting fixtures should be 29 to 35 inches above your table or island or 1.8m off the floor,’ continues Emily.

10. Think: alternatives to country kitchen islands

Not every kitchen suits a kitchen island. In some vintage kitchen ideas, such as this characterful space, an island would feel dominating and disguise the beautifully crafted wooden cabinetry and flooring. However, there are alternatives that bring some of the benefits of an island without compromising the overall character of the space.

‘Sometimes an island can look too fitted and detract from the character and period feel of a kitchen. It might be that a freestanding table or a small moveable country kitchen island provides the extra storage and work surface required whilst being a little more sympathetic to the feel and proportions of the room. ’ says Howard Stubbs, founder of Heaven & Stubbs .

11. Use your country kitchen island to play with color

Color plays a huge role in design, and the kitchen is no different. Adding an island gives you the opportunity to be more creative with your scheme.

’The trend for darker and bold colors in the kitchen is continuing but starting to branch out from just the dark blues to include more greens and even deep reds. The bold feeling is following through in countertop and backsplash choices, with more and more people opting for heavy veined marble-looking countertops, as opposed to the more discreet looks we have seen in the past,’ explains Charlotte Campbell, kitchen designer at Harvey Jones . ‘

'Texture is also becoming a more understood and used element to kitchen design, with countertops, backsplashes, and handle finishes moving away from the high polished, to now include honed and satin finishes. As well as reeded glass creating a more layered aesthetic.

12. Use country kitchen island ideas to create zones

Zoning is essential in open-plan kitchen/living spaces, creating a separation between cooking, dining and living areas. In a country kitchen, an island can help you to achieve this curated space.

‘Deploy different colors for islands, wall cabinets, or under-seat storage to give definition while ensuring the overall look is cohesive and open-plan,’ advises Mike Turley, technical manager at Mereway Kitchens . ‘Another zoning device is to use lighting to highlight different areas, ambient lighting for dining areas, accent lighting for feature areas and task lighting for meal preparation.’

How do I build storage into a country kitchen island?

There are many clever ways in which you can integrate storage into your country kitchen island design. From the conventional drawers and cupboards, to the more creative options, such as double, in-drawer dishwashers, both on the cooking side of the island, to shallower storage spaces for china and cutlery, recipe books and wine glasses on the dining side. Bear in mind that drawers will be more accessible than cabinets – deep and wide for cookware and china, shallow and narrow for spice storage. Consider adding a minimalist space to store and display glass jars or if you have a four-legged friend, think about whether your island could also incorporate their bed, keeping it out of the way and giving them a safe space to relax.

How long should a country kitchen island be to seat 6?

As a general rule of thumb to choose the right size kitchen island, you should factor around 30 inches (2.5 ft) per chair. Therefore, if you want to accommodate six seats around your kitchen island, it will need to be 15ft long. Equally, if you want an island that only has two seats, it will need to be 5ft long.

A country-style kitchen can become a real island of calm and home comfort. Country style is international and multifaceted, it includes rustic styles from different countries: French Provence, American country, Russian rustic style, Mediterranean style. The country-style kitchen is characterized by natural materials, natural colors, ethnic motifs, a touch of antiquity in interior design. Country style allows you to create a colorful, comfortable and at the same time functional kitchen. nine0003

Country style features

A distinctive feature of country design is the lack of gloss. In such interiors there are no exquisite details, bright household appliances. For a country feel, imagine a kitchen in a farmhouse.

The main features of this direction:

  • materials of natural origin;
  • good lighting;
  • the dominance of floral patterns in the design.

Another characteristic feature is the predominance of various textiles. Tablecloths, towels, rugs on the floor, embroidered napkins on the table make a cozy country-style kitchen. Their presence gives the interior authenticity. At the design stage, it is recommended to use original things made by yourself.

Various national motifs are used in decoration. It must be taken into account that each country has its own "rural" features. When decorating a room in a certain national direction, keep the individual details in line. For example, the Russian village is characterized by decorating the kitchen with a samovar, nesting dolls. The decor of the American country style room should have cowboy motifs. nine0003

There are no strict restrictions regarding the choice of decorative elements in this direction. You can use a small amount of plastic, chrome and glass parts. But natural materials should prevail. Make sure that modern details do not stand out.

Try to make the kitchen practical. Small violations of harmony for the sake of functionality are acceptable. A little creative mess won't hurt a rural kitchen either. Leave spices and utensils in sight. nine0003

Kitchen size

When decorating a kitchen in a country style, consider its size.

Small kitchen: what to do

If the kitchen is small, use techniques that visually enlarge the space. Since gloss in this direction is prohibited, glass can be used in a small amount.

Choose your furniture carefully. A massive table is not suitable for a small-sized kitchen, since it will take up all the free space and leave no room for movement around the room. nine0003

Prefer compact furnishings. If possible, hide household appliances in cabinets so that they do not take up space.

Try not to decorate a small country kitchen in dark colors, choose white or beige. Thanks to the light palette, the room will seem more spacious. In a small kitchen, you should abandon the frills and think about expanding, for example, through a balcony or corridor.

Transformable furniture and “multi-tasking” solutions (window sill serving as a countertop, kitchen island) will help to rationally organize the space. nine0003

Medium-sized room

In a medium-sized room, country design can be realized in its classic version. Make the kitchen brown beige or gray, furnish it with solid wood furniture. There are no special nuances in the design of a medium-sized room.

In such a kitchen, you can equip a mini-zone for relaxation or a corner for a pet.

Large kitchen

A large kitchen opens up a lot of possibilities in the implementation of various design ideas. There are no restrictions on the choice of color, the main thing is that it fits into this style. And it will be light gamma or dark it does not matter. nine0003

Make a wooden table with a solid top the centerpiece of your interior, cover it with a beautiful tablecloth. You can put a sideboard near the wall.

Decide on the functional content and determine the location of the zones. Choose zoning techniques.

Colors

Rustic colors in neutrals and pastels. In the French direction, light, bleached shades should prevail. The colors look like they faded in the sun. The Italian and English version of the country suggests the dominance of denser and more saturated tones. nine0003

When decorating the interior of the kitchen in this direction, contrasts are used: against the background of light surfaces, dark furniture and bright accessories look good.

White country kitchen

Snow-white decoration is not the most typical solution for a rural kitchen. But this color scheme is appropriate to use in the country-Scandinavian direction. Or in a duet of rustic style with minimalism.

The use of white, which provides a stylish finish to the country kitchen, is appropriate in small apartments where there is a need for visual increase in space. nine0003

In most cases, a light finish is used for walls and ceiling surfaces. You can decorate the room with a discreet white set with patina.

We advise you to focus on soft muted tones - creamy, milky. But white flooring is not worth doing. The neutral base is easy to dilute with colorful themed accessories. As an accent, you can use furniture with countertops of a different, more saturated color or texture that imitates stone. nine0003

Black

Country cuisine in black is rare. But given the fashion for dark headsets, this option is acceptable. Black furniture will organically fit into a country loft or an eclectic direction containing elements of rural style.

Green shades

The green color scheme is ideal for country design. This design evokes associations with summer, it looks fresh.

Green goes well with different shades of brown. Such a duet makes it possible to create cozy interiors. Green also goes well with white. This combination can be used to optically enlarge small spaces. nine0003

Blue palette

Another successful solution is the blue palette. These are natural shades that contrast well with warm wood and textiles.

Gray kitchen

Pure gray country kitchens are rare. Usually, more intricate shades are used for decoration, for example, gray in a duet with blue or gray in combination with beige.

Beige range

The beige palette is versatile and perfect for country kitchens. You can give preference to a linen shade or rich caramel. nine0003

Finishing and furniture: what to consider

At the stage of designing a country kitchen, you need to approach the choice of furniture and finishes with all responsibility.

Wall decoration

The best option for wall decoration is wallpaper. Give preference to textured coatings for painting. When decorating the interior of the kitchen-living room, combine materials. For the kitchen, washable non-woven or vinyl-based wallpapers are more suitable. In the dining area, the walls can be decorated with paper wallpaper with rustic motifs and "chintz" patterns. In rooms decorated in the spirit of the country, they look touching. nine0003

Another possible option for wall decoration is decorative brick or stone. The accent wall imitating brickwork is the hallmark of the modern country style.

Clinker tiles and artificial stone in the look of old brick can be used to decorate the entire wall or set accents - at the dining table, around the door or window.

The walls can also be painted. Give preference to moisture-resistant paint that has a velvety matte texture or mineral-filled texture. nine0003

Decorative plaster can also be used for finishing. We advise you to buy compositions with a matte texture or with the effect of "bark beetle". Do not use plaster with mother-of-pearl.

Different saturation of the hue looks original - somewhere brighter, somewhere lighter. The walls look like they have faded under the scorching Mediterranean sun.

It is appropriate to use wooden lining or MDF wood panels in the country interior of the kitchen. The wall is sheathed with them completely or only the bottom. The best choice is pine lining with a thin seam and a presentable texture. Paint it with light paint. nine0003

Embossed vinyl wallpaper, plastic 3D panels, unreliable imitations of wood and stone do not fit into the country direction. This style gravitates toward laconic, classic solutions in decoration, rejects frankly unnatural materials.

Floor

Stone and wood flooring is perfect for country interiors. But these options are quite expensive, if finances do not allow them to be implemented, you can use more budgetary modern materials that imitate them. nine0003

Wood or stone effect porcelain stoneware is the most durable and wear-resistant coating, distinguished by reliability, practicality and affordable price. Porcelain stoneware with a slate or terracotta texture is ideal for the kitchen. Give preference to aged tiles that have an embossed matte surface, “faded with time”, imitating cracks and chips.

You can lay cement or metlakh tiles, they will decorate the kitchen. Focus on the flooring if the room has low ceilings or the headset looks too modest. nine0003

A good alternative to expensive solid wood floors is engineered or parquet boards. When choosing a laminate, you should not save money; a budget coating with a wood pattern is unlikely to look aesthetically pleasing. We advise you to lay a moisture-resistant laminated board of class 33 with a four-sided chamfer and a characteristic wood texture.

Choose an "aged" laminate. The brushed oak design will look ideal. The presence of knots and cracks will add charm to the room. nine0003

In a studio apartment or in a kitchen combined with a living room, lay tiles with a neutral pattern, matched to the tone of the laminate or parquet, in the “wet” area. This finish will help divide the space.

Ceiling

The ceiling can be painted with moisture resistant paint. Choose from white or cream. A matte stretch ceiling will cost inexpensively, such designs are practical. With a properly installed installation, it will take only 4-5 cm in height. nine0003

The atmosphere of a country house in a city apartment will help to create wooden lining or MDF panels imitating wood. In a room with a low ceiling, it is recommended to paint the lining in a light color.

You can finish the ceiling in a country kitchen with decorative beams made of solid wood or MDF with natural veneer. Install them over a lining or painted surface. Textured rough beams made of untreated semi-antique wood emphasize the character of the country style. nine0003

But keep in mind that such a ceiling conceals space. Hollow false beams are often made from MDF. They can mask communications.

Kitchen furniture in country style

Kitchen furniture in country style is recommended to choose wood.

Dining area: not only tables and chairs

In addition to the classic dining group, consisting of a table and chairs, you can order benches and stools for the kitchen.

Some replace the classic table with a window sill or bar counter. Folding tables and folding stackable solutions are welcome.

The kitchen set must be selected based on the characteristics of the country style. For English and French directions, choose light furniture. When designing a kitchen in the spirit of American country, it is recommended to buy a dark wood set.

Light furnishings should be chosen for a small room. nine0003

A distinctive feature of country-style kitchen sets is frame facades. They have a concise, slightly rough appearance. Deaf doors should be diluted with lattice facades, stained glass inserts, open shelves with wrought iron details.

The material for the manufacture of country sets is solid wood or MDF. Facades are veneered, covered with PVC film or enamel. The last of these options is the most budgetary. The finish must be matte. nine0003

Patina, brushing technique, craquelure are used for furniture aging. A couple of cabinets can be left without doors, replacing them with light curtains.

The table must be round or rectangular. Choose furniture with solid wood or MDF tops finished with natural wood veneer. A table with a table top made of tiles or stone will organically fit into the country direction.

Curtains and curtains

For a country kitchen, you need to choose curtains in the appropriate style. They can be cotton, linen or chintz, imitating burlap. nine0003

A good choice would be curtains in a neoclassical or Scandinavian style, contemporary.

Short curtains are in fashion. You can use curtains without tulle or tulle without curtains. Or even leave the windows open.

Blinds, long curtains and frills of the classicism era do not fit into this direction. Choose something light and simple. A great idea is to hang half-transparent curtains on the windows with cows grazing in the meadow or hares masquerading in the grass. nine0003

Choose curtains from budget materials. They will make the room more comfortable, soften the space. Windows covered with chintz and linen curtains evoke positive emotions and set you in a serene mood.

Mixed fabric curtains keep their presentable appearance for a long time. The main thing is that they fit into the style of coloring. The combination of natural and artificial fibers gives the curtains practicality.

Lace tulle curtains with a floral pattern, light curtains with soft pleats and frills fit well into such interiors. nine0003

Doors and windows

Doors in country-style kitchens are most often light-coloured and specially aged. Their complete set with glass inserts helps to increase the flow of natural light into the room.

It is also possible to install a door leaf made of unpainted dark natural wood, provided that the walls in the room are light.

Plastic windows should be abandoned, replaced with wooden ones painted white. Plastic will kill all the charm inherent in country design. You can use a laminated profile with a natural wood finish. nine0003

Fitting floor-to-ceiling floor-to-ceiling floor-to-ceiling floor-to-ceiling floor-to-ceiling French windows, divisible into several sections.

In American ranch-style kitchens, windows and doors are often framed with stone, which can be natural or artificial. The work area is decorated with the same material.

The window sill must be laminated wood or stone. Cornice - thin bronze, antique, with patina or forged details. nine0003

Plastic blinds are not allowed, but wooden shutters are not forbidden.

Decor

When designing a country style kitchen area, don't be afraid to overdo it with decorative elements. The main task is to create the most comfortable environment, and this can be achieved with the help of small details.

Decorate your room with vintage items that keep a family history. It can be a kerosene lamp or a samovar taken from a great-grandmother's chest, a cuckoo clock, painted trays, porcelain figurines, nesting dolls. nine0003

Hang copper kitchen utensils on the rails, place ceramic figurines, containers of cereals, canned vegetables and fruits on the shelves.

Bouquets of lavender, dried wild flowers, painted plates, still lifes and embroidery will serve as decoration for the kitchen. Cover the floor with a homespun rug or patchwork rug.

The maximum association with the village life will help to achieve canned food, bundles of onions and peppers, wicker baskets. nine0003

Actively use indoor flowers and wall panels in the decor of the room.

Kitchen appliances and kitchen utensils

One of the key points at the design stage of a country kitchen is the careful selection of household appliances. It is best to purchase stylized models, as concise as possible. Neutral options are a good choice.

Just as carefully choose fittings and sockets with switches. Their wrong selection will deprive the interior of harmony. Retro-style household appliances will fit well into such a kitchen. nine0003

Shop for hobs, ovens and built-in microwaves in white or black with bronze handles to match your kitchen cabinets. When choosing a hood, also focus on the appearance: give preference to a domed model with a decorative cap.

Lighting

In country kitchens, natural lighting is combined with artificial lighting.

Chandeliers

The design of the chandelier must be made in the old style, the presence of brass, bronze and forged parts is welcome. Shades in retro style made of milky white glass will look good in such an interior. Candelabra with candles. nine0003

Work light

Pay special attention to lighting the work area. It is desirable that the light of the chandelier is directed precisely at this area. As an addition, highlight the apron and shelves of the headset. This will ensure maximum comfort during the cooking process.

Sconces and other lamps

We recommend using sconces and other lamps to illuminate the kitchen area decorated in country style. Additional light in the kitchen is never superfluous, especially if the windows of the room face the north side. nine0003

Give preference to lamps made of natural materials, make them part of the decor. Use floor lamps, suspensions, spotlights. LED lighting in such interiors is rare.

If the size of the room allows, decorate the walls with sconces imitating old lanterns, gas burners. For Russian country cuisine, you can purchase lamps resembling oil lamps, with fabric and wicker lampshades of a laconic shape.

Not everyone likes country design, young people may find it too simple and boring, but for older people it is a great solution. Such kitchens breathe calmness and comfort, they are conducive to family tea parties. nine0003

1.

Find the best layout for your country kitchen

Although the expression “work triangle” is rather outdated when it comes to the layout of country kitchens, the concept of a work triangle is still relevant.

It makes sense to reduce your footprint, otherwise ordinary tasks will turn into marathons. Keep your main prep area near your sink and stove and you can't go wrong. nine0003

A central kitchen island can help create the perfect work triangle, but if poorly planned, it can get in the way. Consider including a stovetop or sink to make it more practical and cook friendly.

In the old days, the kitchen table was where most of the cooking took place, so design your island with that in mind.

The experts at Wren Kitchens say: “An island gives your kitchen a sense of grandeur and is extremely practical at the same time. It consists of a row of cabinets that provide more storage space, as well as a seating area, work area, and can also accommodate a kitchen sink. ” nine0003

"A meat countertop kitchen island is also another option and is really pleasing to the eye, especially when designed with open storage space and a combination of countertop materials that creates a real focal point in your kitchen."

2. Embrace the original features of a rustic kitchen

7. Choose the right countertops

Choosing the right kitchen countertop is vital because it is an important design element in your country kitchen, especially if you have a kitchen island. nine0003

Quality stone or wood countertops are the standard choice for country style kitchens. If you prefer stone, avoid anything too bold or shiny as it won't match the rustic style.

For example, if you choose granite, opt for natural reds, browns and creams over black.

Matte finish adds rustic appeal. Faux composite countertops may look like stone and have increased durability, but they will cost more and require special installation. nine0003

Wood countertops are probably the most common surface in a typical country kitchen.

Wood requires little maintenance (spills should be wiped up quickly and you'll need to oil it regularly to keep it looking its best), but it has the advantage of being easy to fix once you mark it. A quick sanding and polishing will remove everyday scratches and dents.

Try mixing materials when designing a country style kitchen for both style and practicality. nine0003

You can use a more durable material in areas that are more likely to get burned and scratched, leaving higher maintenance materials, perhaps for the bar counter.

Wren Kitchens experts say: “For a true stately home, quartz or granite countertops are the only choice. The marble effect adds a touch of luxury that can be continued on the apron.”

“Cold white quartz perfectly sets off traditional colors such as navy blue and forest green. And the natural radiance of granite creates a real impression. ” nine0003

“Remember to match and match with your island's thick wood countertop that can create a work area. Wood countertops can add a bit of warmth, and in this type of kitchen, the shorter they are, the better for more appeal.”
