Garden around the country house | Flower gardens
Project author: Irina Nistratova, architect: Natalya Zakharova
Creating a garden on the basis of previously existing plantings requires a separate approach and attention not only to the features of the landscape and architectural style of the house, but also to the "heritage", which can be successfully played with new tasks, especially if the idea of natural naturalness.
nine0002 One of the difficulties in developing the site around the country house in the classical style was the numerous plantings left over from the previous owners. Spreading spruces, mountain pines, arborvitae, junipers and birches, as well as fruit and berry trees - apple trees, plums and cherries - already made up the composition of a picturesque garden. In addition, there were places for flower beds and a wide pond with a concrete bottom and banks lined with natural stone.- nine0005
The new owners decided to keep most of the plants, supplementing them with some plantings and correcting the shape of trees and shrubs. The pond also underwent changes, as a result of which it significantly decreased in size and became more accurate. The area around it was surrounded by moisture-loving plants: willows, primroses, snake knotweed, brunners, periwinkles and daylilies. The idea of naturalness has become central to the design of the garden. Flowers, shrubs, and trees were carefully chosen for their ability to grow in such a place in nature. nine0003
The water mill made of tinted wood makes the pond even more picturesque. It not only serves to give the garden a more romantic look, but also purifies the water of the pond. The mill wheel is covered with a wide pitched roof with an elegant lantern.
Another important idea was to design the garden in such a way that the plants in it bloomed from early spring to late autumn, and bright buds were pleasing to the eye for most of the year. Spring flowering begins with crocuses, snowdrops, muscari, blueberries and onions, then daffodils and tulips bloom, after - anemones and brunners. At the same time, lungwort blooms with them. Phlox, colchicum and asters look great in autumn. Numerous roses enter the overall ensemble as a separate note. Most of them are planted near the house. They can be seen from the window, from the open terrace and at the entrance. nine0003
The garden traditionally performs not only a decorative function: here, near the porch, mint is planted. You can tear off a leaf and throw it into tea. Monarda leaves, like mint leaves, have excellent taste properties and a delicate aroma. At the entrance to the house, four ball arborvitae grow. Ground cover roses are planted next to them, which, according to the owner's plan, create a colored carpet. Elder racemosus and red-leaved hazel are also here, and broad-leaved raspberries will bloom next year.
nine0002 There are three flower beds in the garden. One runs along the contour of the house, so it includes plants that require minimal maintenance. This includes evergreens (ball and vertical arborvitae). They are especially good in winter, when they brighten up the bareness and monotony of the garden and attract attention. There are also gray spirea bushes that bloom in spring, ash-leaved and palmate maples, which are especially beautiful in summer. To complete the picture, a variegated tenacity plant was planted between the bushes, and geraniums of various varieties were planted along the edge, creating a bright and neat border. nine0003In addition to the garden part, there is also a forest area, which has become especially fashionable in landscapes in recent times. Since the main space here is shaded, the ground was planted with shade-loving geraniums. In places of light and partial shade, badans, hosts, astilbe, geyhers, Rogers and other shade-loving and shade-tolerant plants will blend well. The trees presented in this zone correspond to the composition of mixed forests of central Russia. Spreading spruces and thin birches are also found here. Particular attention is also paid to plants that do not leave a lot of debris after shedding their leaves. nine0003
Gardening advice: a whole
When choosing plants, it is necessary to pay attention to the architecture of the house, since flowers can match the range of shades chosen for the design of facades. Garden composition depends on whether a stone or wooden house stands on the site. So, roses are more suitable for a stone mansion or cottage. It is also necessary to take into account the characteristics of the soil: its composition, humidity, as well as the presence of shade and its intensity. From this point of view, the words of Gertrude Jekyll are recalled, who believed that the house should be a continuation of the garden, and the garden - a continuation of the house. In this case, at the porch, the main focus is bush and ground cover varieties of roses, complemented by crocuses, daffodils, tulips, due to which the main goal is achieved - to make this place bright and sunny. nine0003
