Beautiful Coastal Living Room Ideas You Will Love – jane at home

Modern coastal style is such a great way to add a contemporary and cohesive look to the living room.   Its lighter color palette, breezy aesthetic, and comfortable, relaxed attitude makes coastal style the perfect choice for living rooms and family rooms.

With that in mind, in today’s post I’m sharing some simple tips on how to bring a touch of modern coastal style to your living spaces, including coastal decorating ideas, images of living rooms featuring modern coastal style, places to shop for coastal furniture and decor, and much more.

Since modern coastal is the design style I’ve incorporated in my own living room and home, I’ve spent hours gathering ideas and inspiration on this topic — and today I’m sharing everything I’ve found.

Whether you’re thinking of adding modern coastal style to your home, currently making choices regarding furniture or decor, or  simply looking for tips for adding a light touch of coastal style to your living room, I hope you’ll find all sorts of great ideas in this post!

Pure Salt Interiors

What makes a living room coastal?

A coastal living room typically incorporates the colors and textures of nature, including lighter-toned woods, baskets, natural fiber rugs, woven elements, and easy-care textiles like cotton and linen.

In a coastal living space, you’ll often see white slipcovered furniture, a color palette inspired by the sand and sea, and natural and organic elements–all of which convey a relaxed way of living.

Although there are many versions of coastal style, my favorite viewpoint is modern coastal design, which is light, minimal, and fresh, incorporating a mix of relaxed beach house and classic Hamptons styles.

For more on modern coastal style, you might be interested in my post, Modern Coastal Decorating Ideas for Your Home.

How do you design a coastal living room?

For a coastal look in the living room, I suggest beginning with a background of white walls and adding in furniture and window coverings in casual fabrics like cotton and linen and soft neutral hues of the sand and sky.

Then layer in some natural materials, including lots of baskets, light woods, and lovely textures through rugs, throw pillows, and throw blankets.

For ideas and inspiration, you might want to take a look at sites like Serena and Lily, Dear Keaton, Crate and Barrel, or Pottery Barn, all of which beautifully convey what coastal style is looking like in 2022 and 2023.

An elevated coastal look is all about mastering the mix of timeless and modern.  And, since coastal or beach house style is essentially carefree and relaxed, it’s easy to go overboard.  So when designing a beach-themed living room, I recommend using a light touch.

Some things to avoid overdoing in a coastal or beach-themed living room include signs, ropes, anchors, nautical themes, and lobster, crab, sea urchin, and starfish motifs.  These elements are fine in small doses but can easily overwhelm a space if overdone.

Coastal style - photos of interiors, houses, examples and designer's explanations

Coastal style is the style of a house on the coast. Not an expensive villa or mansion, but a small house that perfectly embodies the modest charm of the bourgeoisie.

Origin of the term

I will tell you today about this style, which is called coastal style in English, but is not called in Russian, because it is simply unknown in Russia. Coastal literally translates as “coastal”, and most often houses in this style are located on the sea. However, such houses are also built near lakes, rivers, on hills - in general, where there is a beautiful landscape.

Examples

Of course, you should not talk about the style as the style of an inexpensive house. Even a small house on the coast of the warm sea costs a lot, especially with such a view from the windows.

And yet, the coastal style is a style of modesty, there is nothing luxurious in it, nothing of the “beautiful life”.

Coastal-style houses are decorated modestly - both in the exterior, as you can see in the photo on the left and the photo above, and in the interior, as you will see in the following photos.

Coastal style is a style for a quiet self-sufficient holiday, without any glamor, it is a very family bourgeois style.

This means that the finds and ideas of style can be borrowed for interiors of the middle price range.

The best decoration of a house on the sea is the view from the window. And this is logical - why hide the beauty of nature from yourself? (By the way, the same applies to a house or a dacha if it is surrounded by a garden.)

Key features

The main feature of coastal-style houses is large windows. The more windows and the more of them, the better.

Large windows, maximum openness to nature - the main calling card of the coastal style.

Windows are minimally decorated - curtains made of light fabric, white or with a light floral pattern, Roman blinds, roller blinds-mats are used.

Often the windows are completely empty.

Is it possible to use this technique - large and practically uncurtained windows - in our latitudes? Why not, because the main thing is to have a beautiful view from the window.

Even if your house or cottage is not by the sea, but there is a lot of greenery outside your windows, you can make large windows and use only light curtains or tulle in summer. If you live in this house all year round, then it is better to make double-glazed windows with two or even three-chamber.

The house in the coastal style in winter, we see in the photo above. Cozy, warm space at home and cold desert space outside the windows. So that such a view from the window does not upset, it is enough to combine light Roman blinds with thick curtains, with which you can completely close the windows in winter. Then the house will seem like an island of summer in the middle of winter.

Country house charm

The photo above shows a typical coastal style house with paneled porch and large living room window.

This gives the houses a kind of "non-urban" charm.

Paneled windows are a sign of retro style, and indeed those houses that use paneled windows are most often decorated with characteristic retro techniques - round tables on massive legs, table lamps with fabric shades, thick sofas with linen covers, a lot of colors. Coastal style is very eclectic, you can see the techniques of a variety of styles, from classics to styles 1960s. But we will look at this in more detail below.

Paradoxically, the windows are large and the ceilings are usually low.

But this does not bother anyone, and no one is specially engaged in visually increasing the height of the ceiling. On the contrary, a house by the sea often has a ceiling trimmed with straw or wood. In general, wood and straw weaving (or imitation straw) are very popular in coastal style.

House rooms are usually small. Some of the photos in this article are taken in such a way that the rooms seem large, but in fact their size is rarely more than 16 meters.

At the same time, the rooms are often adjacent or connected, often do not have doors, the entrance to the room is a large open doorway. Often even the veranda is practically integrated with the living room.

Open space

In general, the layout is very open, free, so small rooms do not look cramped. At the same time, note that despite the openness of the space, the style is very cozy. This is an important point to which I would like to draw your attention.

Cosiness is often associated with closed spaces – wooden doors without glass inserts, tightly drawn curtains, etc.

Closeness gives a feeling of security, hiddenness, and it is from this feeling that the idea of comfort begins. This concept of comfort is widespread in cold countries - Russia, England, Belgium, Finland. But there is another idea of comfort, in which, on the contrary, openness, lightness, and availability of space are important.

Contrary to expectations, this concept of free, open coziness is not only common in southern countries - it is very common in America, the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands.

That is, it's not the climate, but something else, perhaps the national character or degree of neuroticism.

Coastal style is a great proof that open space and coziness are not antagonists, but friends, as you can clearly see in these photos. So if you do not want closeness, but at the same time you want comfort, pay attention to it.

Decorative features

Let's move from the design features of the style (large windows, low ceilings, small but open rooms) to the decorative features.

These are primarily light but saturated colors for walls, floors, furniture and textiles.

Straw is often used. Golden sand, light yellow, white, blue, light blue, turquoise, pistachio, coral colors are very popular.

Pay attention - the colors are light, but saturated, not pale, not washed out, not muted. Joyful, distinct and even almost bright. Of course, the abundance of white combined with golden sand makes coastal style interiors very elegant.

Now a little about the furniture and its placement. In general, as I said above, the style is very eclectic, and now you will see that small houses by the sea successfully exploit motifs of various styles. Compare the two pictures:

The interior in the photo above on the left is equipped with furniture in the style of the 1960s - a glass table, a characteristic armchair, a sofa. The interior in the photo below is retro-style furniture, instead of a coffee table - chest matching accessories. And yet the coastal character of both interiors counts instantly.

Examples of interiors

In the photo - clear motifs marine style : white and blue stripe, curtain with a "marine" pattern, locker instead of a coffee table. The photo on the bottom left is cottage style motifs, the photo on the bottom right is ecological motifs.

However, we can say about each of these interiors that it is made in a coastal style. This is facilitated by the characteristic arrangement of furniture: a sofa opposite the chairs, a coffee table between them, the sofa almost always stands sideways or with its back to the main window. The presence of a bookcase or sideboard is characteristic, large table lamps of a classical form are almost obligatory.

This arrangement of furniture, of course, speaks of a quiet family vacation, without noisy parties, without computers, TV, an abundance of things. It’s cozy to lie on the sofa with a book, admire the view through the window during the day, get together with your family in the evenings and chat over a cup of coffee - this is what such a set of furniture has to offer. Review all the photos in this article again - and you will see that the arrangement of furniture definitely creates an atmosphere of a relaxed family vacation. If this is what you are aiming for in your new home, take note of the coastal style.

Coastal style - the atmosphere for a joyful holiday

We welcome everyone who seeks to transform the interior of their country house!

It doesn't matter where your house is located, how many kilometers lie between it and the nearest coast. The “beach house” style will help to create an atmosphere of bright sunny mood, which literally means: a house on the beach, or otherwise - a coastal style.

Coastal style combines several completely individual directions: a Mediterranean villa, an English manor, a tropical bungalow, a Finnish cottage. Each of them has its own unique charm, its own zest.

In this article we will consider one of the options for "beach house" - American. In this style, you can feel the light and fresh breeze of the ocean coast, summer, the sun, the atmosphere of carefree rest and celebration.

The secret of the coastal style is the abundance of light - this is an important and indispensable attribute of this trend. What can help achieve the effect of maximum illumination? Of course, the use of dazzling white in interior design.

White shades of the spectrum are able to reflect natural light, enhance it. It is necessary to let as much fresh air and bright sun into the house as possible. Large windows and glass doors can help achieve the desired effect.

If there are not enough of them in your house, then you can add artificial lighting from additional lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces.

The right choice of textiles for interior decoration will help to enhance the triumph of white. It should be light, simple fabrics of various textures. Snow-white curtains, fluttering from the breaths of the summer wind, will remind you of the sea breeze that fills the sails.

It would be appropriate to use elements of marine decor: elegant shells, shiny boxes, pillows with a marine print. The main rule is not to "weight" the space with unnecessary details.

The key importance of white in coastal style interiors can be emphasized with subtle shades of grey, khaki, which will remind you of the charm of the coastal dunes. By adding gentle shades of blue, we will feel the charisma of the sea and sky. An unobtrusive interweaving of transparent halftones and an abundance of natural light - all this will create an atmosphere of bliss, relaxation and comfort.

Loyalty to the theme of the house on the beach needs to be enhanced by the use of natural textures: sea grass, straw, jute. For example, a table with a glass top will fit perfectly into the overall look of the room.

In the dining room, the romance of the coastal style can be emphasized by the massive dining table top, made of light oak, lightly patinad, as if bleached with sea salt. An ideal addition would be kitchen furniture made of light wood to match with the main accent element - a table.

Open space is another nuance inherent in the style of the house on the beach. Freedom, the spirit of boundless space does not accept clutter with unnecessary furniture and knick-knacks. A clear perspective of the line of sight should not linger on objects in the center of the room.

Furniture in a coastal style house must match the chosen image. She seems to invite you to sit on it in a wet bathing suit and at the same time feel very comfortable.

At the same time, there must be some elegance. This can be facilitated by covers for chairs and armchairs with ideal clear lines.

A little about accessories. To maintain the atmosphere of relaxation, sea and sun, it is necessary to choose such decorative design elements as if they had just been brought from the beach.
