Traditional bedroom ideas are loved for their timeless appeal and the restful sanctuary that they create. The bedroom is a room unlike any other in your home and should be the perfect place to relax after a busy day.

From the daily commute, to the constant buzzing of your phone, not to mention the seemingly never ending sea of responsibilities that rest upon our shoulders, we all need a quiet place to escape at the end of a busy day. Your bedroom is your sanctuary, a private space shut off from the busy world, so let your own personal style and tastes guide your design.

From beds and furniture to wall-coverings and window treatments, there are plenty of bedroom ideas that will inspire your traditional bedroom ideas.

A traditional-style bedroom is one that feels authentic to the age of your home and is packed with pattern, visual interest, comfort and warmth.  By channelling traditional decorating ideas you will give your space an identity, instantly imbuing it with charm and character.

1. Opt for a wrought-iron bedframe to encapsulate traditional bedroom ideas

Your bed defines the look of the whole room, so opt for a timeless design that will also give you the freedom to reinvent your space in future. Crafted from wrought iron, the Henry bed from the Period Living collection at Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Co, is inspired by classic dorm-style designs and is here finished in iridescent bronze for an added touch of sophistication.

When it comes to finding the best bed ideas to incorporate into your traditional bedroom ideas or vintage bedroom ideas, classic Victorian-style beds should be your first port of call. 'Wrought iron and brass beds resonate with so many of us, from classic movies such as Mary Poppins and Bedknobs & Broomsticks, through to snuggling down under multiple layers of bedding when staying over with beloved grandparents,' says Harry Thompson of Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company . 'Wonderfully timeless, a well-made iron or brass bed should last years, just like our fond childhood memories.'

2. Play with paint color to add character to your traditional bedroom ideas

Whether it's paneling, picture rails, detailed window frames, cornicing or ceiling roses, there are plenty of ways to accentuate the character found in traditional bedroom ideas. Make these details sing by painting them in a brighter color than your base wall.

When it comes to choosing the best color for a bedroom be inspired by your furniture, the room's orientation and the natural light it receives. Be sure to consider paint finishes too, pair a matt finish on walls with a satin around the window frames to help reflect light back into the room.

In this bedroom the picture rail and skirting board have been painted in Fenwick & Tilbrook ’s Highland Peat, emphasising the room’s height, as have the window frames, drawing the eye down the length of the room and as such, making it feel lighter. A stud wall, painted in both Boleyn Rose and Conker, creates a cozy and private nook for the bed.

3. Create harmony between traditional bedroom ideas and an ensuite with wallpaper

A more modern element of traditional bedroom ideas, an ensuite is a valuable addition to any master. However, it's important that your ensuite bathroom ideas work in harmony with the rest of your traditional bedroom ideas.

One way to achieve this is by using the same patterned wallpaper in both the bedroom and ensuite to create harmony throughout the space. There are plenty of bathroom wallpaper ideas, that would look equally stunning in a bedroom.

Brimming with color, Style Library's Blackthorn FSC wallpaper in an Autumn shade brings a warmth to the design of both spaces, while also being a sustainable decorating choice. While the trend towards sustainability might seem like a new idea, it was actually a cornerstone of the Arts and Crafts movement. As a reaction to mass production, designers including William Morris championed handcrafted designs that were made to last. Today, design house Sanderson continues that legacy, while also ensuring its raw materials are ethically traded.

4. Add fitted wardrobes to make the most of available space

A good night’s sleep goes hand in hand with a tidy bedroom – you can’t properly relax if you're surrounded by clutter. Built-in furniture is one of the best bedroom storage ideas and is perfect for traditional bedroom ideas as it can be easily installed into unusually shaped nooks. Built-in furniture is also perfect for bedrooms in attic conversions as they can incorporate the sloped ceilings.

These pretty mirrored wardrobes provide a storage solution that is tailor-made for the room, and enable you to maximise every last bit of space – ideal if you have awkward alcoves and sloping ceilings to contend with. Another clever way to reduce clutter is to fit wall lights either side of the bed, as it frees up space on your bedside tables.

If you're considering adding fitted wardrobes, then you'll be asking: how much do fitted wardrobes cost to install? Of course this varies from project to project depending on the size and requirements but prices start at around $1,000.

5. Opt for linen bedlinen for a touch of luxury

Getting into a freshly made bed is one of life’s little luxuries so make sure that you invest in the best bedlinen. Linen makes for some of the best bed sheets as its loosely woven structure makes it highly breathable, helping to regulate your body temperature throughout the night.

'Linen has a beautiful distinctive texture that gets even softer with each wash. A dream to look at and to snuggle, it blends practicality with aesthetic, thanks to its charming and crumpled look that requires no ironing,' explains  Molly Freshwater, creative director at The Secret Linen Store . 'Twice as durable as cotton, linen bedding can last decades. It's also a much more environmentally friendly option, as it needs little irrigation to grow. '

Due to its natural weave and textural appearance, linen is the perfect complement to country bedroom ideas. Try layering different colors and textures for the ultimate cozy sanctuary.

6. Decorate with dark shades for an intimate atmosphere

Traditional bedroom ideas don't have to be light and bright – opting for a dark scheme can create an intimate enviroment that promotes restful sleep.

'Dark colors are a great choice for the bedroom as they create a warm, cozy atmosphere and look wonderful at night. Sometimes people can feel slightly intimidated when using dark colors in the bedroom, however they are actually very calming and endearing,' explains Francesca Wezel, founder of Francesca's Paints .

7. Celebrate pattern by opting for a characterful wallpaper

Your bedroom is a private space, and as such gives you the opportunity to create a truly personal scheme. If you prefer to play it safe in the main rooms of your home, then use the bedroom as a place to experiment with color and texture.

A calming  palette of soft turquoise and  warm beige makes Susi Bellamy’s Duck-Egg Bouquet wallpaper perfect for a relaxing sanctuary, while its marbled design adds an artistic feel.

'Fresh, earthy and completely versatile, you can’t go wrong with green and blue. They are closely connected on the color wheel, so it’s easy to introduce the two tones to create the illusion of more color without overpowering a space,' explains Jen & Mar, co-founders of Interior Fox . 'For a calming effect opt for lighter colors offset by natural finishes, or for a more sumptuous scheme choose much darker shades.'

When selecting a wallpaper be sure to try it out in situ by attaching samples to the wall. This will help you get a feel for how the paper will look in your space and whether it will complement your other traditional bedroom ideas. 'If wallpapering all four walls feels a little overwhelming, or you are using a particularly bold design, consider accent walls. Placing patterned wallpaper behind the bed offers the perfect place to experiment as the bed will break up the space and make it feel slightly more subtle,' advises Ruth Mottishead, creative director at Little Greene .

Offering soundproofing, insulation and bringing texture to the scheme, there are myriad benefits to bedroom carpet ideas. However, in traditional bedrooms with original flooring, it isn’t always the best option, as fitting carpet could cause damage. Bedroom rug ideas offer so much more than a simple floor covering, bringing all the benefits of a carpet yet still showcasing and protecting the original wooden flooring.

Furthermore, the position of your rug can help to zone the room, creating a divide between the sleeping and dressing areas as well as provided warmth underfoot. If you're hoping to incorporate patterned wallpaper ideas into your traditional bedroom ideas, then opt for a minimalist muted rug, like this gray weave with mustard border, to prevent the patterns competing for attention.

9. Invest in shiplap to bring character to your traditional bedroom ideas

Paneling is an excellent addition to any traditional bedroom ideas. Bringing instant character and warmth, paneling is an affordable way to elevate your bedroom design. From tongue-and-grove and fluted through to shiplap and square, there are plenty of different paneling ideas for walls that are sure to spark your imagination.

In this bedroom, shiplap walls have been painted in earthy tones to give the bedroom a welcoming, laid-back feel. Decorating with neutrals rather than whites also prevents this minimalist scheme from feeling cold.

10. Use lighting to create a soothing atmosphere

The right lighting design will have a huge impact on your bedroom’s look, allowing the space to seamlessly flip from bright in the morning to cozy at night. ‘Layering the lighting will give you plenty of options. Bedside task lamps, clip-on lights and wall lights offer low-level illumination for reading or relaxing, while ceiling lights create a focal point over the bed and serve a practical function,’ advises Natalie Mann, new product development co-ordinator at Iconic Lights . ‘Don’t forget warm white bulbs and a dimmer switch, as this will give you full control from bright light to a softer mood lighting for the evening.’

When lighting a bedroom, ensure that you can operate at least one of your lights from the bed. Fitting wall lights either side of the headboard offers ample reading light without disturbing a sleeping partner. Pair with a table lamp, such as this Palmer lamp with Buttercup velvet shade to softly illuminate the room in the evening.

11. Dress your windows with floor-length bedroom curtains for a peaceful sanctuary

While curtains and blinds are the obvious choice of window dressing for a bedroom, consider that shutters may be a more practical solution that will complement period homes from various eras.

'The bedroom should be a calm space where you can switch off and shutters can greatly add to this by providing you with privacy and the ability to control the amount of natural light entering. Additionally, if your sleep is disturbed by sunlight or streetlamps full height solid shutters are a stylish solution. Keeping the shutters closed will block out all light in the evening, whilst during the day you can open them fully to clear the window allowing daylight light in,' explains Chrissie Harper, customer experience manager at California Shutters . 'As well as looking beautiful inside your home, shutters also add to the curb appeal of the property and from a practical point of view are easy to maintain.'

10. Choose a four-poster for an opulent feel

If you're searching for traditional bedroom ideas that will bring grandeur to your space, then a four-poster antique bed is a must. 'I find that antiques have a timeless quality that is difficult to achieve with most modern pieces, and the depth that they give to a scheme provide unparalleled comfort,' says interior designer Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors . 'However, often it is the juxtaposition of old and new that creates that certain special energy to a design.

Evoking luxury bedroom ideas, pair your four-poster bed ideas with a classic canopy to create an elegant space that invites regency style into your scheme.

11. Add layers of comfort to your bed

(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby)

This traditional bedroom sanctuary is part of a converted stable block but had no original period features worth preserving. Instead, the bright room has been clad in whitewashed pine and incorporates rustic bedroom ideas with reclaimed brick tiles.

While its walls and flooring could lead to this traditional bedroom feeling cold and unwelcoming, soft fabrics and a soothing color palette help to create a warm and welcoming space.

'Combining traditional styling with modern-day comforts may sound tricky, but the very first pocket sprung mattress was invented in 1901! So even pocket sprung mattresses have footings in tradition,' say Harry Thompson of Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company. However, there are still valuable lessons we can learn from our grandparents and great grandparents when it comes to styling a bed, he says. 'One traditional  trick we have lost over the years is layering our bedding. Not only do multiple layers offer a comforting and cozy sleep sanctuary, but layering your bed with natural fibres, such as wool and alpaca, helps to create a breathable, fresh sleep environment perfect for all seasons.'

12. Make the most of original features

Exposed timbers add to the character of this large attic bedroom. It's a classic amongst traditional bedroom ideas and includes antique and vintage furniture, but the look is fresh and up to date thanks to the color choices.

The pairing of pink and green is a traditional decorating idea that is very 'now' and Farrow & Ball 's Dead Salmon shade is used right up to the rafters to emphasize the old beams. The headboard is covered in Colefax & Fowler 's Lincoln fabric.

'Adorn the room with pretty soft furnishings in muted tones and paint other furniture such as chests of drawers, a dressing table or desk and bedside tables (regardless of age or period style) in similar calming hues to fuse a look that’s eclectic, fun and unstructured. '  says Shabs Kay, owner of antique bed specialists Victorian Dreams .

13. Add pattern with a bold headboard

The most successful traditional bedroom ideas are the ones with personality, but which work with the original features says renowned interior designer Penny Morrison .  There's no denying that in a bedroom, the bed itself will generally be the focal point of the room, especially if it showcases eye-catching headboard ideas.

It’s really all about creating a space of character and unique personality,' says Penny. 'You can enhance a room's traditional features by painting joinery in a high-gloss lacquer finish. And the combination of textures and pattern in your accessories complements but also strengthens the scheme, and creates atmosphere. There is no right or wrong.’  And if it's good enough for the doyenne of mixing patterns in a room, pairing unexpected pieces and palettes, it's good enough for us too.

14.

Layer whites with pastels to create a calm sanctuary

(Image credit: Future / Emma Lee / Sally Denning)

Traditional bedrooms are often decorated quite intricately but you can use pattern simply, and cleverly. Here, the matching tones of the different colors gives the room a calm feel, while decorating with stripes, presented both vertically and horizontally, create interest and also exaggerate the room's proportions very subtly.

17. Choose floral for a traditional bedroom scheme

Choosing and using bedroom wallpaper ideas is something most of us have struggled with, some of us even avoiding wallpaper altogether, feeling much more confident with a paint brush than with a paste brush. However, wallpaper provides the opportunity to bring a burst of pattern into your traditional bedroom ideas.

'We have noticed a shift in interiors tastes and trends in recent years, with a move towards heritage designs centred around florals and nature. Preferences in color palettes have shifted too, with the new generation not afraid to mix things up, such as powdery pinks complemented with cool greys and darker charcoals,' reveals Nina Tarnowski, founder and designer at Woodchip & Magnolia, 'Whether an eye-catching wallpaper or striking mural, adorning your walls in a bold floral design gives  an instant lift and creates a design statement. Don’t be afraid to push beyond your comfort zone and consider even taking the design up to the ceiling, a burst of flora and fauna is the perfect way to achieve a stylish and striking new look.'

18. Try cottagecore style in your traditional bedroom

The cottagecore look is a staple of traditional bedroom ideas – and it can be really elegant if you go for a subtle approach, choosing foliage over florals and complementing them with more modern, simple graphics. A pared-back color scheme will channel elements of cottage bedroom design into your traditional bedroom ideas.

When incorperating the cottagecore look, be sure to utilise nature. 'Bring the outside in and add flowers, indoor plants and perhaps a floral wallpaper to brighten up your space. Bringing as many natural elements, or at least a natural façade into your bedroom is so beneficial to our wellbeing,' says Joanna Ross, General Manager of Design at Sheridan .

19. Incorporate a window seat to add traditional charm

If you're lucky enough to have window recesses that are deep and low enough to incorporate window seat ideas, the bedroom is the perfect place for this most romantic of sitting places. One of our favorite traditional bedroom ideas, it provides a peaceful spot to read a few pages or relax and watch the clouds go by.

This dainty window seat has been paired with a a pretty pink toile de jouy wallpaper and cushions in matching shades to create a timeless scheme that draws on cozy bedroom ideas.

20.

Traditional styling and modern comforts – for modern times

When designing any bedroom, comfort should be the priority and this is all the more prevalent in traditional bedroom ideas. One of the best ways to achieve comfort in your bedroom is by layering textiles.

'In these modern times, the bedroom offers modern comfort in the form of oversized deep duvets – always buy a duvet a size larger than your bed. Choose high thread count sheets, an upholstered headboard to lean on when reading in bed, and deep pile carpet or sheepskin rugs underfoot,' recommends Georgia Metcalfe of The French Bedroom Company .

Designing a traditional bedroom should be done with thought and care, especially because we spend so much time in them.

'Bedrooms are the best rooms in the house for you to follow your heart, express your own character and create a truly personal space,' says Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene . You can be as bold or as simple as you like, it’s as easy as creating a space that is pleasing to you.

Heritage patterned fabrics, luxurious quilts and antique furniture are elements that can help you design a traditional bedroom. One of the beauties of traditional bedroom ideas are that they are timeless and can work in a wide variety of homes. Consider incorporating traditional ideas such as bed canopies, window seats and floral wallpaper to take your traditional bedroom ideas to the next level.

How do I make my bed pretty?

Adding a beautiful duvet cover and lots of cushions offer a great and easy way to make your bed pretty. Pick a fabric you love and don’t be afraid to be bold in your choice. Alternatively crisp white bedlinen accented with some floral cushions will instantly look pretty yet sophisticated. If you are thinking of updating your bed frame, a four-posted bed will always be a pretty choice that is perfect for adding a luxury edge to traditional bedroom ideas.

What is a traditional bedroom?

‘Traditional bedroom ideas refer to a style that’s firmly anchored in the past. However, that does not have to mean that it’s boring. Instead, you can embrace classic design while also adding touches that show off your personality and taste,’ explains Andre Kazimierski, CEO of Improovy Painters Chicago .

‘Consider adding a pop of color through wallpaper or artwork. You could also opt for a unique ceiling fixture or houseplants. Just because it’s traditional doesn’t mean that everything has to be neutral! Just be sure that you’re maintaining some sort of symmetry.’

Decorating the Bedroom in Traditional Style

prefabricated interiors, renovation ideas

Despite many other options, the classic always remains at the peak of popularity. Its harmonious atmosphere contributes to a good rest, gives a feeling of peace and tranquility. This is truly a royal choice for those people who value comfort and stability. We invite you to see how luxurious the classic style looks in the interior of the bedroom by looking at the photo!

Classic Style Features

Translated from Latin "classicus" means exemplary. This is exactly what the classic interior is like - it is dominated by the symmetry of the golden section, ideal proportions and antique splendor. The impeccably decorated room resembles palace chambers with their exquisite decoration, where every detail is an integral part of a single ensemble.

Inspiration for classic bedroom design can be found in the cultural heritage of ancient Greece and Rome, European renaissance architecture, noble residences, theaters and galleries. All these places are not even necessary to visit - there are pictures and videos from which it is easy to borrow interesting ideas.

Color design

A characteristic feature of the classics is aristocratic restraint. Everything is dominated by soft natural colors, tinted with the brilliance of precious metals, and contrasts are almost never used. An exception to this rule may be perhaps dark brown or black, which is present in the decoration of furniture, but this is rather the influence of modern fashion.

Classic white bedroom

Pure snow-white color, although it is basic, is not very common in the design of a classic bedroom. Light pastel colors of the warm spectrum are more common: vanilla, cream, delicate peach, pinkish. The ceiling is painted white without impurities, the skirting boards framing it, gypsum stucco molding, sometimes leather upholstery of the headboard and pouffes.

Classic beige bedroom

The classic bedroom in beige tones has a special charm: pinkish-beige walls, light furniture and textiles create a subdued homely atmosphere, conducive to privacy and nighttime relaxation. Compared to bright white, beige absorbs more light than it reflects, avoiding harsh shadows and harsh sun rays.

Classic brown bedroom

Expensive tree species have the exclusive right to decorate a bedroom in a classic style. As a rule, they are varnished in reddish-brown, chocolate and chestnut shades with the preservation of unique patterns on the cut. Dark brown wood textures look most advantageous when surrounded by turquoise, beige, cream and gold.

Classic bedroom in gold color

The noble radiance of gold is an essential attribute of the classical style. This is the perfect complement to the snow-white finishes and pieces of furniture. Gilded fittings, picture frames, all kinds of monograms and golden patterns on the wallpaper will give the bedroom a truly luxurious look.

Bedroom materials and finishes

The classic design is based on wall, ceiling and floor finishes. All this should be perfectly even and smooth, because only on a neat background can you equip a truly royal bedroom. It is advisable to choose the highest quality materials - their price will justify itself with a long service life and high aesthetic characteristics.

Walls

To create a cozy atmosphere, the walls of the bedroom in a classic style are decorated with great elegance: it can be Venetian plaster, expensive fabrics, luxurious wallpaper with silk-screen printing. A combination of textures similar in material and color is often used. At the same time, a more decorative layer is made in the form of panels, which can be quite a lot (depending on the footage of the room).

The necessary verticality of the bedroom is given by columns or ledges stylized as them, thanks to which the ceiling seems higher and the interior acquires a stylish zest. Horizontal lines can make up thin gypsum or wood borders. Arched niches look very nice above the head of the bed.

Sex

Wood is commonly used for classic flooring. Out of competition - natural plain parquet, although in some cases it can be replaced with a laminate. Very appropriate in the bedroom are silk Persian carpets with discreet patterns. The color of the floor should be in harmony with the rest of the design, without creating a contrast. Dark shades must be repeated in furniture and accessories, while light ones are more versatile. The only thing to avoid is wood with a warm undertone (alder, spruce, pine).

Ceiling

The minimum ceiling height for a bedroom in a classic style is 2.8 m. In a small room, it is enough to level it well and paint it white, decorating the perimeter with neat skirting boards. But in a spacious one, as a rule, they make a two-level structure with curly edges. Inside, a light stretch fabric with a monochromatic matte texture or photo printing in the form of frescoes can be used, the outer parts are often decorated with plaster moldings or golden painting.

Classic style bedroom furniture

In a classic bedroom, it is preferable to choose furniture that is characterized by solidity and reliability. An example of this direction can be the elite collections of Italian factories. Unlike other, more democratic types of design, the classic does not allow for fragmentation of objects - here all furniture must be supplied in a well-thought-out set with identical decor.

The central place, of course, is occupied by a bed with a massive carved headboard, light leather or velvet upholstery. Sometimes it can be decorated with forged details, gilding.

To create a romantic atmosphere and separate the sleeping area from the rest of the space, a canopy sometimes helps - a thin translucent fabric in light colors or luxurious curtains attached to a special cornice. Canopy looks best in large, bright rooms.

In addition to the bed, the bedroom may need bedside tables, chest of drawers, dressing table, mirror, ottomans with velvet or leather trim. If a cabinet is installed, it must fit into the overall concept. Usually in such cases, old-fashioned swing structures are chosen. Sliding doors can only fit from opaque "frosty" glass with an intricate pattern.

Antiques are welcome in a classic style bedroom, but they need to look new and shine like a museum piece.

Lighting

The soft, subdued light inherent in the classics suits the bedroom perfectly. Sharp glare from fluorescent lamps, luminescent or neon elements, point diodes is unacceptable here. The ideal option is energy-saving lamps with radiation in the warm white spectrum. But the lamps in which they should be located is a whole art.

First of all, a large chandelier in the form of a forged candlestick, symmetrical lampshades or numerous drops of crystal stands out in the center of the room. On the walls you can hang sconces in the same style, or use bedside lamps, a floor lamp.

It is very good if a dim side light highlights decorative elements: beautiful paintings, panels, niches, figurines.

Textile and decor

For a bedroom in a classic style, textiles must be selected very carefully, because in the end it is he who gives the room a complete and lived-in look. Curtains are of great importance in such an interior - light tulle for the entire window and thick sliding curtains made of expensive fabrics on the sides. The optimal length is from ceiling to floor, except for rooms that are too high. Decorations, lush draperies, fringe, figured lambrequins, beautiful tassels with tassels are welcome.

Bed linen is equally important. For bedspreads, jacquard with gilded or silver patterns is suitable, otherwise it is better to stick to natural, body-friendly fabrics with a smooth texture, light colors and no print.

If the overall decoration of the bedroom is plain, you can choose textiles with characteristic patterns. These include monograms and curls, fleur-de-lis, climbing roses, rhombuses, Greek pattern, grapes, crowns and the like.

Small bedroom design in classic style

Although the classical style implies a rather large room, no one forbids using the techniques you like in a small room. It is only necessary to observe the minimum rules, as well as maintain harmony in the interior.

Light colors

Unobtrusive white and gold or creamy beige shades in a small bedroom in a classic style will look much lighter than dark ones. In addition, against the background of a delicate finish, any blotches of brown, black and other saturated colors will attract a lot of attention, creating unnecessary contrast and visually reducing the space.

Minimum patterns

Large monograms on the wallpaper, curls, decor and stucco are designed to fill the emptiness of the royal chambers, but in a small bedroom they will be completely superfluous. In this case, a slight hint of the classics is enough - graceful corners, thin gilded baguettes, almost imperceptible silk patterns.

Efficient use of space

In order to save space in a small bedroom and at the same time conveniently arrange all things, it is worth taking into service the creative experience of other people. A very practical solution is a bed on a podium (elevation), under which there are roomy drawers with clothes. Tall wardrobes with appropriate door design (instead of bulky swing doors) will help in mastering the corners.

Classic interior features

The development of the classical style took place in the 16th century, which corresponds to the period of the European Renaissance. At this time, the idea began to take shape that the interior should not only meet its immediate functionality and purpose, but also be aesthetically attractive.

First of all, the implementation of this idea found its application in the palaces of royalty and noble people of their time. This led to the pomp and scope of the classical style, which was formed from different elements.

So, for example, its creation took place taking into account the features of baroque (smooth forms, a large number of decor), rococo (many paintings, ornaments), empire (columns, sculptures, military paraphernalia), etc.

Baroque features are inherent in the classical style , Rococo, Empire and Classicism. Each of these areas can prevail in the interior design of the bedroom, depending on the wishes of its owners.

The design of the bedroom in the classic style is similar to the luxurious and refined palace chambers, where all the details are skillfully combined into a single ensemble.

One of the main features of the classic style is symmetry. All pieces of furniture and decor should fit harmoniously into the interior of the room.

The color scheme consists mainly of light warm shades. Perhaps the presence of golden tones. Color contrast is not welcome.

An integral part of the interior is natural wood. It is used in decoration and for the manufacture of furniture.

The classic bedroom uses natural marble, bronze, gilding, velvet and brocade to give the bedroom a luxurious feel.

Stucco molding is an obligatory decorative element. She decorates ceilings, walls, windows, decorative structures and niches.

Exquisite decor items will make the bedroom harmonious and cozy. Works of art, antiques, paintings in a luxurious frame are perfect.

You can also decorate your bedroom with floor vases, candlesticks, lamps with beautiful shades, figurines and pillows.

All these components of a classic style must be combined perfectly. It is very important that the color and texture of the walls, the shapes of furniture, the shades of textiles and decor elements harmoniously complement each other.

Classic room requirements

In order to recreate all the characteristic features of the classic style in the bedroom, several points related to its layout should be taken into account.

Room size. Classic interiors require a large spacious room. It is desirable that the area of \u200b\u200bthe bedroom is at least 20 square meters. m.

Ceiling height. A room decorated in a classic style must have high ceilings - at least 2.8 meters from the floor to the finished ceiling.

Lighting. In such interiors, lighting should be designed in such a way that a cozy twilight can be formed.

Classic style variations

There are several varieties of classics, influenced by other trends. All of them have similar features, due to which they are classified as a single group, however, each has characteristic differences that create a special atmosphere in the interior of the bedroom.

Modern classic

The modern version of the classic design of the bedroom involves the selection of several directions associated with the national and cultural characteristics of the development of the classical style.

French interior

Its peculiarity is the presence of panoramic windows, elegant carved furniture, the use of silk for drapery, stucco with bas-reliefs.

American design

This type is more characterized by spaciousness, an open plan, a small number of pieces of furniture, which are characterized by large sizes. Such furniture can be a large sofa or chair.

American classics usually don't have wardrobes: things are stored in a wardrobe, where an interior door or special doors in the form of blinds lead. Soft lighting fixtures like table lamps are used.

British style

Fine woods of dark color are selected for finishing. Decor is often created from a variety of elements dating back to colonial times.

In the British classics, a library and a fireplace are considered essential elements of a bedroom. Fabrics with checks and floral prints predominate.

Russian classic

This design option is distinguished by the presence of rectangular shapes with a small amount of decor. Characteristic examples of this style are various buildings in St. Petersburg, for example, the Tauride Palace.

Neoclassicism

Traditional classical style is a variant of finishing the entire interior of the bedroom under the palace of noble persons.

In modern interiors, such a solution may look somewhat inappropriate, since the layout of typical apartments is not suitable for the scope of the classics.

Therefore, neoclassicism is often used for decoration - a new classic, which is a more modern and free version of strict, traditional interiors.

Neoclassicism is distinguished by clean lines, neutral colors, more concise decor.

Basic shades are usually combined with gold or bronze to add elegance and luxury to the atmosphere.

Baroque

This is a rather pompous and elegant style, but it also needs a lot of space and space to implement. This is connected with the fact that baroque migrated to modern houses from royal palaces, in which its elements were designed to emphasize the wealth and prosperity of the owner.

Baroque combines with standard classics the use of geometric shapes, stucco, columns, sculptures.

This style is characterized by a large number of figurines, paintings, mirrors and other decorative elements.

Baroque uses a color scheme that consists of white and gold. If necessary, white can be replaced by pastel colors with beige, sand or peach hues.

In a modern baroque design, rich shades of blue, burgundy, chocolate can be used. At the same time, each of the proposed options necessarily requires gilding, which will create the appropriate atmosphere of the classics.

In such an interior it is impossible to imagine the presence of empty space: every corner must be elegant and functional. To do this, the room is filled with frescoes, stucco, niches, etc.

Uniform formation is not allowed. The interior should contain various expensive materials, decorated with stucco or patterns.

The flooring must match the general status of the room. It is made from noble wood.

Natural materials are also present in the manufacture of furniture, which can be classified as antiques or be a high-quality remake, stylized antique.

Rococo

This is a variation of the Baroque style, which is presented in the interior with less pomp. The leading motif of Rococo, which served as the basis for the formation of the style, is the sea shell.

Such stylization determines the requirements for the widespread use of stucco and patterns.

Rococo is more suitable for small bedrooms.

It was previously used for decorating boudoirs, and is currently used in small bedrooms, where oval shapes prevail in decorating.

The features of the decor also apply to the design of the walls: for example, the corners are specially rounded with the help of plasterboard structures, and the oval ceilings are decorated with the help of stucco cornices. The arched form is taken by windows and doors, which is also facilitated by the use of drywall.

Rococo is draped with shell-printed fabrics or wallpapers, the room is divided horizontally with wide piping.

This style is characterized by the presence of gilding, furniture, for which woodcarving was carried out, etc.

In view of the fact that rococo is inherent in boudoirs, mirrors, beds with high backs, dressing tables, and soft ottomans are always used to decorate it.

Rococo colors are quite varied. It combines pastel and bright colors. For example, light pink with wine, delicate turquoise and rich mint.

Textiles are simpler than in the case of Baroque, but Rococo is also characterized by the use of tacks, pelmets, single curtains and a canopy for the bed.

Empire

This style is also called imperial, which imposes certain expectations on its use. So, the Empire style is characterized by the luxury of the interior, the task of which is to demonstrate the good taste, pomposity and authority of the owner.

Empire style bedrooms are created using clear lines, with the condition of drawing up a strict layout in which each decorative element has a certain place.

Silk fabric is used for decoration, high-quality wallpaper. It will also be optimal with the use of overhead decorative elements such as stucco moldings, moldings, etc.

In the Empire style, the ceiling is usually decorated with white or ivory, and it is not uncommon to find patterns spread over the entire area.

In addition to the chandelier, this style is characterized by the use of tall floor lamps. A more modern Empire style suggests the possibility of introducing ceiling lighting.

The color scheme in the design of the bedroom is quite saturated. For decoration, blue, red tones are used, tinted with gold and white.

For the Empire, as for the classical style, the presence of massive furniture made of expensive woods is typical, but there is no need to use refined carvings.

Gilding and heavy noble fabrics like velvet and velor are used.

Antique carpets made from natural materials are considered appropriate.

Fairy options

in the classical bedroom, as in other stylish directions, various color design may be used. In this case, the following options may be optimal solutions.

In dark colors

In a classic bedroom, dark shades work well with both pastel neutrals and rich contrasting colors.

The room can be decorated with chocolate or anthracite, thus making mirrors, picture frames finished with gilding and other decorative elements that have been decorated with chrome finishes brighter and more visible.

When decorating a classic bedroom with dark tones, the following nuances should be considered:

In light colors

To decorate a classic bedroom in light colors, it is worth using a neutral color scheme. Classic white is suitable for this, however, due to its simplicity and conciseness, it should be combined with warmer beige to give the room sophistication and elegance.

White walls go well with cream patterns , and gilding can add high cost and luxury to the interior. At the same time, in a classic interior, shiny and glossy surfaces should be completely abandoned.

When decorating a bedroom in light colors, you should definitely add warm notes, otherwise, the design of the room will be too simple and minimalistic.

For example, you can use yellow, peach, cream. They are good to dilute the muted color of the main background.

Lemon cream goes well with gold, soft pistachio will complement brown patterns, etc.

A walnut, alder or oak plank looks best on the floor. It is acceptable to use lilac, pastel blue, green.

A light palette helps make a space feel more voluminous. At the same time, in a classic interior, saturated, poisonous shades should be completely abandoned: all colors should be soft and muted.

White

Absolutely white bedrooms in a classic style are quite rare, although white is one of the basic shades.

It is recommended to combine it with other tones, such as vanilla, cream, peach, so that the room is not faded and featureless. Ceilings and moldings are often painted white.

White is a good choice for decoration and furniture. However, in this case, conventional models will not work. Classic bedroom furniture is often made to order. It should be noted that their shape should be refined, smooth, but look unobtrusive.

Pay attention to furniture fittings. Gold or bronze handles go well with white furniture.

It is better to choose a white wardrobe with hinged doors, as the wardrobe does not fit into such an interior.

The bed is available with a wooden headboard or upholstered in white. It is necessary to make sure that the details of the bed have an intersection with other furniture in the bedroom.

Beige

Decorating a bedroom with beige tones combined with golden hues is a classic option for decorating a room. Such a tandem helps to create an exquisite decoration of the bedroom, and natural materials, noble wood and high-quality textiles will create an atmosphere of truly royal chambers.

Beige finish goes well with stucco, baguette, imitation columns.

The use of various shades of beige in the interior from warm yellow to cool gray will help create a luxurious monochrome interior.

Golden figurines and antique candlesticks are a great addition to this design.

Golden

An integral attribute of the classic style is the golden color. It is often present in the decor of furniture, fittings, framing paintings.

Noble gilding in various interior items, wall paintings, wallpaper patterns will bring luxury and nobility to the bedroom interior.

Brown

Shades of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon are one of the most characteristic options for decorating a bedroom in a classic style. In addition, the brown color scheme often becomes the basis for the selection of furniture from expensive wood species.

Usually the bedroom furniture is lacquered in red-brown, chocolate or chestnut color. At the same time, it retains its unique patterns on the cut.

When choosing furniture in brown for the classic bedroom , the room should be decorated with beige, cream and golden shades , which act as an advantageous backdrop for dark furniture.

Blue

Blue color brings coolness and peace to interior design. This effect is achieved through the use of sky and azure tones, filling the room with freshness, lightness and airiness.

In addition, the blue color helps to visually expand the space, which contributes to the increase in the area of the bedroom in a classic style.

A room decorated with smoky grey, combined with blue, will look a bit more down to earth and practical.

The blue-gray classic interior is well complemented by the combination with white, which gives the space a restrained and elegant look.

Bronze, glass table, soft carpet, printed silk will look good in such a bedroom.

Green

Green shades in the interior add nobility and pretentiousness to the classic bedroom. They are considered a characteristic color scheme for the British interior, which is one of the areas of modern classics.

The most common design options are emerald tones, as well as dark shades of green, which are well combined with wood and gilding.

Gray

Gray color in a classic bedroom will give the owners a sense of peace and tranquility. To decorate the room, it is permissible to use both light gray and dark gray tones, which go well with white.

White color allows you to dilute the monotony of the bedroom and cope with the overall gloomy atmosphere. Gray also pairs well with creamy and beige tones that help make a room feel cozier.

Finishes and materials

The basis of any interior is the choice of appropriate materials for renovation. To recreate a classic bedroom interior, it is important not to skimp on surface finishes.

It is necessary to purchase mainly natural materials, which are of high quality and high cost.

Walls

Venetian plaster, wallpaper and expensive fabric wallpapers are ideal for wall decoration.

The most suitable wall coverings are wallpapers with fine patterns or silk-screen printing.

May be combined with other textures and wall finishes.

The walls are often decorated with columns, stylized ledges, bas-reliefs. Niches and arched vaults are best finished with thin plaster or wooden borders.

Ceiling

In a classic style, the ceiling is of great importance, as it is considered one of the leading accents in the room. The ceiling should look perfectly even, and its decor is stucco or ceiling frieze.

The height of the ceiling must be at least 2.8, preferably 3 meters.

In a small room, the ceiling can simply be leveled and decorated in white by placing elegant skirting boards all over the surface.

For large bedrooms, three-dimensional structures with curly edges are usually created.

In a modern classic design, stretch ceilings can be used, decorated with paintings, or multi-level plasterboard structures, where different lighting variations are integrated.

Stretch canvases can consist exclusively of a matte texture or include photo prints designed to look like frescoes.

Floor

The ideal flooring is natural wood. Its color should be combined with furniture and other accessories without creating a contrast.

The presence of a beautiful carpet will give the room a respectable look.

Windows

Classic bedrooms require a lot of light, so to create such an interior, rooms with large windows are required.

Pay special attention to curtains. The standard design uses long curtains from ceiling to floor, however, with excessively large windows, their size may be smaller.

Doors

The doors are designed in the same style as the room itself. So, for example, subject to the presence of stucco molding, gilding, which are used for wall decoration, it is necessary to organize the interior in such a way that these decorative elements are repeated in the area of platbands and on the very surface of the door.

In a classic interior, doors can be made in the form of a standard rectangle or stylized as an arch.

Furnishing a classic bedroom

Furniture selected for a classic bedroom must meet the following requirements:

The entire bedroom must be completed with one furniture set. The possibility of using disparate, stylistically unrelated interior items is completely excluded.

Taking into account that classic-style bedrooms have large areas, the furniture includes a fairly large number of elements: a bed with bedside tables, a wardrobe, a dressing table, a chest of drawers, ottomans and banquettes.

It is also possible to have a table with an armchair, a bookcase and other pieces of furniture.

Bed

The main piece of furniture in the bedroom is a classic-style bed with a soft leather or velvet headboard. It is usually decorated with forged and gilded decorative details.

The head of the bed is sometimes decorated with carved wooden elements.

At the foot of the bed, a chaise longue or a chest will look great, which are intended for storing decorative pillows and bedspreads at night.

Bedside tables

In the classical style, it is important to observe strict proportions and volumes, and therefore bulky symmetrical cabinets, designed in the form of rectangles, are chosen to decorate the bedroom.

The furniture itself must be made exclusively from natural wood in a dark or light shade. The cabinets should have graceful legs, carvings and gilding to form a style that matches the overall tone of the room.

Wardrobe

A large wardrobe with hinged doors and drawers will perfectly fit into the interior of a classic bedroom. A modern wardrobe can be put in a neoclassical style bedroom.

Chest of drawers

Chest of drawers in a classic style, on which you can place photo frames, figurines, candlesticks, vases, will be a bright detail in the interior. Often they buy chests of drawers with mirrors, which effectively reflect the room.

Bedroom set

For a classic bedroom, it is recommended to choose a set made of natural solid wood, which will help create coziness in the room and will match the overall style of the interior.

The bedroom set is characterized by large beds, chests of drawers, dressing tables. At the same time, all this remains active and functional: the classic style is intended for people who value practical and proven solutions.

Dressing table

In the interior of a classic bedroom, a place should be provided for placing a dressing table, where the hostess of the room will bring her appearance in order.

An elegant dressing table must be completed with a beautifully framed mirror. It will go well with a bench upholstered in leather or fabric.

Armchair

If the size of the room allows, you can set up a small corner for relaxing and reading in the evenings by installing a beautiful armchair in the bedroom. It should also be made from noble woods.

The chair does not have to be on legs, let's say a variant with a rocking chair. Next to the chair, you can put a small round table.

Ottomans and banquettes

These design elements are aimed at creating not only an aesthetically harmonious, but also functional room. So, for example, an ottoman in itself becomes an important element from the point of view of the interior, and the presence of additional capacity will help to ensure the implementation of its practical function.

Sufficiently long ottomans are allowed. In the future, it is possible to design them with the help of pillows that help create an additional seating area.

Only natural fabrics are used for finishing, which form the furniture upholstery.

Classic bedroom banquettes should be chosen in solid colors with discreet upholstery.

Even a cage can be used for this, if it is made of neutral, soft shades.

The legs of the banquette must match exactly with the legs of the bed to maintain a uniform style of the room.

Lighting nuances

Lighting in a classic style bedroom is diffused and subdued. To accomplish this task, several light sources should be placed in the room.

The chandelier becomes the main one, and wall sconces, floor lamps or lamps can be additional options.

It is important that they have gold-plated elements, lampshades or other fine decorations. This will help create a unified style.

Chandelier

Traditional classic chandeliers for the bedroom have several light sockets, decorated with numerous decorative elements and gilding. Also, chandeliers can be in the form of forged candlesticks and lampshades.

Wall sconce

Classic bedroom wall sconces are selected with a metal frame and curved lines. They are shaped like lanterns. To decorate their shades, textiles or glass can be used.

In addition, for such lighting fixtures, the presence of crystal pendants is considered a characteristic way of decorating.

Other lamps

Choose bedside lamps with beautiful shades and gilded details. They will not only become an additional source of lighting, but also an exquisite decoration.

Classic floor lamps will fit perfectly into the interior of the bedroom.

Sleek and classic bedroom table lamps, placed on a chest of drawers, coffee table, console or window sill, will brighten up the space.

Textiles

Classic interiors are characterized by the use of luxurious and elegant fabrics. They not only add comfort, but also create a sense of completeness through the use of expensive and noble textiles.

Curtains and tulle

The chosen tulle should completely cover the window opening, and the curtain is sewn only from high-quality fabric. Such material can be velvet, cotton, satin, etc.

The length of the curtains almost always runs from the ceiling to the floor.

To complete the window design, you can use pelmets, laces and other decorative elements that match the overall style of the room.

Bedspread

Jacquard fabric should be preferred when choosing a bedspread. It is important that the textiles are combined with the shade of the curtains and the pattern that is depicted on them.

To create volume, you can choose a bedspread with gold or silver patterns.

Bed linen

Classic style calls for bed linen made from natural smooth fabrics. They will be not only pleasant for the body, but also fit perfectly into the interior.

Light colors should be preferred. The bedding itself should be without drawings.

An exception may be cases when the interior itself is quite minimalistic, and the classic style needs additional decor. In this situation, the best solution would be to use natural prints, such as vines, rhombuses, or various royal attributes.

Canopy

To create a canopy, choose dense fabrics such as velvet or jacquard. With their help, an ordinary bed will acquire truly royal features.

Can be used with chrome canopy holders that match the style of other decorative elements such as door handles.

Carpet

When choosing a carpet, you should prefer pastel colors or slightly dusty shades. The ornament on the carpet must be symmetrical, like all decor items in a classic bedroom.

The best solution is to use woolen carpets with long pile, which will help to correctly place accents in the room.

Decor and accessories

Traditional bedroom interiors in classic style should be luxurious and elegant. Decorative accessories can be very different. Antiques and works of art will fit perfectly into the design.

Various figurines, candlesticks, clocks, vases can be placed on the surface of the dresser, console, bedside tables, coffee table. The main thing is that they are combined with decoration, furniture design, lamps, and do not create color contrast.

Do not use too many decor items. Otherwise, the room will look cluttered, and it will be impossible to relax and sleep well in it.

Bedroom design in the style of modern classics involves decorating the walls with paintings and mirrors in carved frames with gilding.

In such an interior, it is not customary to hang photographs and decorative objects on the walls. Small photographs in elegant frames can be placed on horizontal surfaces.

Choosing paintings for a bedroom in a classic style, it is better to give preference to images of nature in beautiful frames with gilded and elegant elements.

[VIDEO] Calm classic interior

And now I propose to digress a little and watch a video on the arrangement of a classic interior in soothing colors.

A small bedroom in a classic style - what to do if you really want to

For small rooms, the classic style is not typical due to the fact that the room simply does not have enough scale to implement such an idea. However, in a small room, you can use individual elements of the classics.

Walls and ceilings are best designed in a solid color scheme, choosing for this beige shades with white or gray.

Light shades will help visually enlarge the room and bring a lot of light into the bedroom.

Windows should be decorated with curtains that will let enough light into the room. With the help of a metallic sheen of decor, polished wood and mirrors, you can also visually enlarge the room.

Expert opinion

Irina Klimova

I am 29 years old. I am an interior designer. I love my job and have been doing it for over 8 years. About 100 projects have been implemented. I provide professional advice.

When choosing furniture, preference should be given to natural white materials.

Thus, it is possible to decorate the interior of even a standard bedroom with an area of 12 square meters. m. in a classic style in compliance with the basic rules for organizing space.

Large bedroom

Classic style looks best in large rooms, where there is a lot of air and light. This area allows you to make the bedroom the most refined and expressive in accordance with the style.

So, in large rooms, it is permissible to use columns or stylize ledges designed to look like columns.

The bedside area can be designed as an arch with stucco, which can also be placed in the area of the doorway.

Standard textile requirements: satin, velvet or silk. It is allowed to use fabrics with a medium-sized ornament. It is important to bear in mind that a rich color palette is not used in the classic style.

To stylize the room, elite decor is used, such as stucco, frescoes. Wallpaper with a sophisticated pattern or silk-screen printing is selected.

In large bedrooms it is possible to use textures of different composition , for example, the creation of decorative panels with background basic finishing. For niches and arched vaults, thin gypsum borders are selected.

Attic bedroom

Attic bedroom styling in a classic style gives the room elegance and eccentricity, which does not look overly pretentious and pretentious.

Noble colors such as cream, olive, burgundy, etc. should be used to decorate the room. This color scheme goes well with the natural materials chosen for the furniture.

The ceiling must be finished with a matt finish.

Natural wood furniture in the attic bedroom does not lose its functional and aesthetic purpose. Appropriate styling requires threading or fittings. Also in this case, the use of a canopy is acceptable.

Bedroom-living room

This design option is used in small apartments, where the owners try to compactly realize all the vital functions of the interior.

Creating a bedroom-living room according to the rules of a classic interior allows you to create a full-fledged bedroom with a small recreation area.

The main place in such a room is occupied by a bed decorated with a canopy and rich textiles.

When designing a bedroom-living room in a classic style, you should rely on the following recommendations:

  • use the pastel color scheme , diluting it with different decorative elements to match;
  • create an accent wall at the head of the bed to mark the sleeping area;
  • separate bed and living area by using blackout curtains ;
  • use decorative elements , such as carpet, to draw attention to the living area and draw attention away from the bed;
  • the bed should be of the simple form without additional decorations and details.
  • For interior design, use natural materials in the manufacture of furniture.

    Men's bedroom

Classic style is considered universal, but if necessary, you can add masculine features to it. This is done through the use of restrained colors with monochrome prints.

The furniture is selected in dark color from natural wood.

In the masculine design, the classic style takes on some of the features of minimalism due to the absence of ornate patterns and curves.

The floor is molded in oak or maple. The walls are lined with Venetian plaster or decorated with embossed matt wallpaper.

False beams on the ceiling make the interior more solid. It is acceptable to use such decor as:

Men's bedrooms are often decorated in contrast. On the one hand, deep dark colors, on the other hand, the presence of light colors, expressed in beige, gray, sand shades.

    Women's bedroom

Classic style bedroom for women when decorated more like a boudoir. In such a room, light and warm colors usually dominate.

A prerequisite for the formation of the interior is the placement of mirrors and a dressing table.

Stucco and moldings are used to make the room more cozy and romantic. For women's bedrooms, color combinations in contrast are rarely chosen.

Quite often the main background is white, diluted with warm pastel colors. Peach, vanilla, caramel, pink shades with a smooth transition will help make the room more delicate and airy.

This color scheme absorbs light, so that harsh shadows are not formed, which creates a special atmosphere in the interior.

In addition, to maintain the style of the classical direction, expensive wood species are used, covered with chocolate, nut, honey shades.

Silver or gold décor is used to create accents. They can decorate cornices, tassels on curtains, wallpaper patterns, etc. It is important not to overdo it with their use, otherwise the room will look overly pompous.

    Bedroom for children and teenagers

The classic style is also well suited for children and teenagers. For its design, pastel colors are used, in which there are no contrasting accents. The room is formed from milk, chocolate, cream, pearl, olive shades.

Moldings or boiserie panels are used for decoration. When choosing wallpaper, you can give preference to traditional prints: small or large flowers, stripes, engravings, floral motifs.

To add a classic touch to your ceiling, use neutral tones and stucco.

If the size of the room allows, frescoes can be placed on the ceiling. The floor covering should consist of wooden parquet.

If the child is still small, a fluffy short-pile carpet should be laid on the floor: it will become an optimal decorative and functional element.
