At what height to hang a wall lamp above the bed, in the hallway, bathroom

The main difficulty associated with mounting a wall lamp is that you need to choose the right installation height. There are no specific requirements here, so the distance from the floor is chosen solely for reasons of ease of use of the lamp, and, of course, the efficiency of its work (in this case, lighting). Next, we will tell you about how high to hang the sconces above the bed in the bedroom, by the mirror in the bathroom, in the kitchen and even on the wall in the living room!

Bedroom

Most often, sconces are hung in the bedside area in the bedroom so that you can read a book at night without disturbing the person sleeping next to you. Here, when choosing the optimal mounting height, you need to take into account 2 points: the lighting should be comfortable for reading, and at the same time it was possible to conveniently turn off the lamp. You can “kill two birds with one stone” if you hang a sconce at a distance of 1.2 - 1.6 meters from the floor. As for the placement of the wall lamp, it is best to mount it on the wall above the bedside table, as shown in the photo below:

In the children's room, the wall lamp can be used to additionally illuminate the child's bed. Here the height should be such that the baby could not reach the light bulb (otherwise it will burn or get hurt). There are no specific standards regarding the distance from the floor, because. beds and playpens come in various heights. It is recommended to hang the lamp above the children's bed at a height of at least half a meter, as shown in the photo:

Corridor

The next most popular location for wall lamps is the corridor. In this room, the sconce can be installed both along the entire path as general lighting, and in one specific area for local illumination of a picture or a mirror (right at the entrance). Since the corridor is a passage room through which new furniture, appliances and other large-sized objects are always carried, care must be taken to ensure that the placement height is not only comfortable, but also safe. The standard installation option is 2 meters from the floor. If the ceiling is low, you can hang sconces at a height of 1.8 meters of the floor. To illuminate paintings and mirrors, it is better to rely not on the ceiling, but on the visual effect, therefore, in this case, the lamp is most often placed above the illuminated object.

The case of a flight of stairs in a private house can also be included here. If the corridor smoothly passes to the stairs, the height of the product should be 1.5-1.7 meters so that the steps are well lit. In addition to the height, you also need to correctly choose the optimal distance between the wall lamps along the length. In this case, it is best to hang products in increments of 0.6 to 1 meter.

Living room

Living room, or as it is also called - the entrance hall serves to receive guests and relax in the evening. In this room, most often, sconces are placed above the sofa or armchairs for local illumination of the reading place. In order for the light to be good and not spoil your eyesight, it is recommended to hang the sconce at a height of 1.3 - 1.4 meters from the floor. A very good idea would be to mount products on both sides relative to a sofa or chair.

bathroom

in this case, there will be high humidity and the source of water itself - a faucet above the sink, a bathtub, a shower cabin. In addition to choosing bathroom fixtures seriously (they should be waterproof and made from practical materials), you need to choose a safe height to hang the sconces. To illuminate the mirror in the bathroom, we advise you to hang the lamp above the mirror surface itself, which will provide good lighting for shaving, applying makeup and other care procedures. Please note that the distance to the water from the lamp should be at least 60 cm, and even better 1 meter. If the bathroom is spacious and has a dressing table, you can make local lighting by providing a suspension height above the table of at least half a meter!

Kitchen

One of the kitchen lighting ideas is to install compact wall lights above the kitchen and dining table. In this case, again, the height of hanging the sconces in the kitchen is not standardized, but high-quality lighting of the working and dining areas must be provided. In addition, the place of installation of the lamp should be convenient and not interfere with the cooking process. Most often in the kitchen, the sconce is hung a meter above the table, while the lamps can be hung symmetrically with respect to the dining table, as shown in the photo below:

Balcony

Well, the last room in the apartment, which we haven't talked about yet, is a balcony or a loggia. If you have arranged a balcony and made a rest room out of it, then the best option for lighting on the balcony would be to use wall sconces above the chair. In this case, we recommend hanging the product at a distance of about half a meter from the floor if the sconce is located on the side wall (as in the photo) and about 1.5 meters from the floor if the lamp is placed on the side of the window unit.

    Sconce: how to choose a wall light

    Sconce is a decorative lighting device that is fixed on the wall. Its progenitors were torches placed along the corridors, and later - stands with candles and lamps. Even the aristocracy, who could afford luxurious hanging chandeliers, often used wall lights to create a cozy atmosphere. In the article we will tell you how sconces are used in modern interiors and how to choose a beautiful and functional model.

    Why you need a wall light

    Insignificant, at first glance, the lighting device performs a number of important functions in the room.

    • Local lighting - the direct purpose of the sconce. The device can be placed in the bedroom above the bed for comfortable reading, by the mirror for hygienic and cosmetic procedures, by photos or paintings to place light accents.

    • Complete lighting for rooms. In apartments with narrow corridors, small bathrooms or low ceilings, even a compact chandelier will “eat up” the space. Several miniature wall lamps will provide enough light and harmoniously fit into the interior.

    • Creating an atmosphere . The chandelier gives a bright light, which may be inappropriate in a romantic setting, for relaxation or a pleasant friendly conversation. Wall-mounted fixtures create a cozy diffused light that helps to relax.

    • In one-room apartments and studio apartments, with the help of a wall lamp, you can zone the room , dividing it into working and sleeping places, kitchen or study areas. Light accents also hide the shortcomings of the repair.

    • Lighting houses and household plots outside .

    • The design of some lamps is so complex and interesting that their only function becomes room decoration . In this case, they are perceived as an independent element of decor.

    What are sconces

    Modern lamps differ from those that were not only a few centuries, but also a couple of decades ago. Designers are constantly improving the appearance of products to satisfy the tastes of the most demanding consumers. The whole variety of the model range can be classified on several grounds.

    • By the type of ceiling. Allocate models with a fully closed or partially open ceiling at the top. As a rule, they are placed in bathrooms, corridors and hallways without chandeliers.

    Advantages and disadvantages of sconce

    A wall lamp has a large number of advantages even in comparison with a classic chandelier.

    • Versatility . The device complements the interior of any room: room, corridor, bathroom or loggia. It also looks great outside the home: on the porch or on the stairs.

    • Compact dimensions . The dimensions of the lamp allow it to be installed in the smallest rooms, for example, in a closet.

    • Lightweight . The product is lightweight, so it can be mounted on plasterboard walls.

    • Varied design . Sconces are so unique and inimitable that they can become an independent element of decor.

    • Energy saving . Low-power electric light bulbs are inserted into the lamp. If you use LED or energy-saving lamps, your utility bills will be significantly lower than if you use a chandelier.

    There is only one drawback of . If you want the sconce to work from a cord or key switch, you need to think over the wiring in advance. The power cord looks unaesthetic.

    What to consider when choosing and installing a sconce

    Below we give the basic rules on how to choose a sconce. Guided by them, you will select the optimal lamp and be able to install it correctly.

    • If you use a wall-mounted device to illuminate a room, it must be mounted at a height of 2 m. If you place it above a table, sofa or chair for a directed stream of light, measure the approximate height of the person sitting, usually 130-150 cm.

    • To visually expand the space, place several devices at the same height. Choose models in which the light is directed to the ceiling.

    • Classic antique sconces are not installed one at a time. If you choose a single model, it should be in the same style with a chandelier or other interior items.

    • To illuminate the mirror, use two devices, placing them on both sides. Choose sconces according to the design of the mirror. If it is oval, products with rounded shades are suitable, if with sharp corners - rectangular or square solutions.

    • To illuminate paintings or photos, buy a sconce with frosted glass elements. They don't create glare.

    • If you are planning to illuminate a reading or hobby space with the fixture, choose swivel models without fabric or glass shades. They are brighter, and most of the samples can be adjusted in the direction of the light.

    • If you have a narrow room, such as a hallway or stairway, but want a horn sconce, make sure the horn will not interfere with movement.

    • To visually lengthen the ceiling, choose models in which the light is directed upwards. If the lighting goes down, the ceiling will appear even lower.

    • For the bathroom, choose devices made of corrosion-resistant metal. The plafonds should be closed as much as possible so that water does not enter the cartridge.

    For children, we advise you to choose options in a cartoon version.

    How to choose a wall lamp for the street

    When looking for outdoor lighting, consider the following nuances:

    • The cartridge and the lamp must be isolated from the external environment by a ceiling.

    • Choose from metal, thick glass or plastic. These materials are resistant to adverse environmental conditions.

    • The package of a street lamp should include sealing rings, which are located at the junction between the body and the ceiling. This isolates the electrical part of the device.
