When it comes to creating a piece that is “ephemeral,” it seems to be hitting the right combination of color, texture and design. Into the Lab To Study Beauty and Symmetry

In a recent study by a Manhattan College psychology professor, an experiment was conducted that tried to define how simple shapes interact with the brain to create “beauty. ” In this experiment, the participants were presented with a series of four different polygons. They were asked to rate them on a scale of one to seven, according to their level of ugliness or beauty.

The shapes were ones that you would not normally encounter in the real world. One was a random contour, another had mirror-image symmetry, and another had translational symmetry which is where one component can be slid into another. An example of translational symmetry is a honeycomb or repeating geometric pattern where one part of the pattern can be substituted for another. The final shape had rotational symmetry where the shape was turned around a point in either a clockwise or counterclockwise position.

Symmetry and Choosing The Perfect Mate

What the experimenter found is that the participants spent more time looking at the polygon that was symmetrical than at any other shape. They preferred the mirror-image shape over all of the others. The experimenter went on to say that this has an evolutionary basis that has to do with choosing the perfect mate based on the symmetry of the body, but there we go back to the cave paintings again.

In addition to preferring symmetry, the participants also seemed to prefer the symmetrical shapes when presented vertically, rather than horizontally or at an angle. When it comes to rugs and carpets, this would make it seem like producing a breathtaking design would be as simple as creating a vertical carpet with a symmetrical design. One can certainly find examples of extraordinary beautiful rugs that use this principle.

One of the most common examples is medallion carpets that use both horizontal and vertical symmetry executed with precision. It also explains why one almost never sees a design that is oriented horizontally or placed at an angle. Many people think this would not be possible on a vertical weaving loom, but it would be possible, you just never see it. For some reason, it just would not seem right aesthetically.

Although one can find examples where the symmetry principle is used to produce extraordinary fine rugs, one can also find breathtaking examples of tribal rugs that do not follow the formal rules of color combinations or symmetry. Fashionable carpets, photos, materials

Carpets have surrounded people since ancient times. They protected from the cold and at the same time showed the wealth of the owner. Their images are in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs, and the oldest surviving 2,500 years old.

With the advent of central heating and underfloor heating, for a moment it seemed that carpets were an unnecessary relic of the past. It turned out that carpets in a modern interior are still necessary.

We put funny rugs in the bathroom so that we don't slip. We place ethnic rugs in the kitchen to create an appropriate style.

We lay out the paths in the hallways, saving the floor from street dust.

We put luxurious products in the bedroom so that in the morning the leg will be buried in something fluffy. And of course we show the degree of our provision with a fashionable carpet in the living room.

General trends

Judging by the fashionable interiors of modern hotels, carpets driven under the baseboard are irrevocably a thing of the past.

Something luxurious must lie on the floor. And not necessarily the whole room. The main trend is to occupy only part of the room, perhaps only the center. Although there are exceptions.

Various prints. Geometry, abstraction, vintage oriental patterns, brightness and contrast. This is exactly what designers advise, but they still place plain carpets of the most neutral colors in their interiors.

Strange but true - three leading paint manufacturers agreed and in unison chose the color of the sea wave as the leading one.

Digital aficionados who call themselves the Millennium Generation have long gravitated toward pink. And the leading paint brands are going to meet them. The range of pink is expanding and becoming more complex.

Colorists and interior consultants, eyeing the passion of millennials, predict the return of the classic bright red, bound to bring passion.

Following red, we remembered terracotta, not so bright, but surprisingly deep and juicy. It goes well with trendy brick, wood and clay.

Violet is called the new pink. Designers are happy to use not only it, but also the whole range of purple shades. They mix luxurious color cocktails or choose one tone.

Black plumbing, tiles, furniture are in fashion. Matching carpets in the interior are to be expected. Solid ones look spectacular in fur, a smoother pile is good in the form of black and white prints.

Trendy prints and colors

The classic “houndstooth”, “dog tooth”, “pepita” looks original on the floor from black and white colors. "Zebra" will give African exoticism. This pattern has long been established not only on the handbags of fashionistas, but also in stylish rooms.

Lovers of bright classics should recommend "raye" - stripes of various shades and widths. This is not a real "rayet", but the designer was clearly inspired by it and the "multi-colored zebra".

But this is the real "raye". Creates a holiday feeling. Associations with summer, sea and beach. If there is a house on the coast, where the family comes to relax in warm weather, such a carpet will emphasize the relaxed atmosphere.

Another classic bright option is ombre. Colors flow smoothly into each other. There can be two completely different shades, for example red and yellow. Or two tones of the same primary color - a transition from lighter to darker, from blue to blue.

The sunniest people will choose something like a rainbow.

Large flowers - another classic that has moved from clothes to carpets. Two or three shades are enough to make the floor in the living room look unusual and joyful.

In a small living room combined with a kitchen, you can't put chic fur on the floor. A good solution would be an ethnic rug with a bright geometric pattern.

In living rooms decorated with a Japanese accent, it is better not to use multi-colored coverings. But even modest colors can play at the expense of halftones.

A neat square rug in shades of gray harmonizes with the sofa and gives the bright room the restraint inherent in the land of the Rising Sun.

Discreet luxury available only to aristocrats. The color scheme is very restrained. The tone is set by materials and forms. An oval carpet with roses only emphasizes the situation and unexpectedly allows you to relax.

Materials

The best floor coverings are made from natural materials. This ensures a long service life and environmental friendliness. Use:

cotton;
wool;
leather;
fur;
silk.

Woolen and cotton carpets are common, leather ones are popular in modern interiors. Usually they are sewn from small pieces. Color combinations are especially good.

Leather will look great with wood, suede, velor. To complete the picture, just add a little leather as an accessory. But, following stereotypes, the furniture is also made of leather.

The living room looks too formal. This option is more appropriate for an office-library.

Floor fur is usually a small or large whole hide. It is rarely cut to shape. Most often put in its original form.

Sewn versions are less common. Usually rectangular or square. It is very rare to come across truly design solutions. Curly shapes, specially made for a specific interior.

Silk is a true luxury. Such a work of art was considered a real fortune, hung strictly on the wall and passed down from generation to generation.

Silk carpets in the interiors of modern apartments are used on the floor. Naturally, the furniture should match, create a feeling of lightness and grace.

What are shaggy, berber and other obscure words

In Soviet times it was easy. Carpet products were divided into carpet (without pile) and carpet (with pile). Plus there were woven rugs.

At the moment, there are several unusual words on this topic. You should not be afraid, the difference in definitions lies in the absence or presence of a pile, as well as in its height.

Shaggy - pile 50 mm, straight.
Berber - lint-free, the effect is created by different levels of loops.
Katloop - lint-free, a combination of high sheared loops and low uncut ones.
Velor - pile 8 mm, cut.
Frize - twisted, high pile.
Saxony - twisted, sheared pile.

New

One of the new trends is the embossed coating. It attracts attention, being the highlight of the living room. I want to touch it to make sure that my eyesight is not deceiving, that this is not a 3D effect, that this is actually true.

Floral options are good and appropriate everywhere. But the summer of 2018 will bring a nautical theme to the clothes, shown in the images of the inhabitants of the oceans. So why not, succumbing to fashion trends, make a semblance of the seabed out of the floor of the living room.

Richelieu carpets - another amazing find of designers. Looks fabulous. As if Gulliver brought a piece of women's dress from the land of giants.

Eco-style lovers will be pleased with mats made of jute, reed and other similar materials. They are reminiscent of a summer veranda, wicker furniture, bringing rays of sunlight into the atmosphere.

Another joy - cozy knitted carpets. Knitted or crocheted, in pieces or whole, they resemble fishnet napkins, funny crafts for children or grandmother's rugs from old nylon tights.

You can order an author's design object from the master - a round rug that imitates a log house. Will be thematically suited to the wooden floor.

Unexpected

Contemporary designer Alessandro Isola has a very original look at the use of carpets in the interior of a modern living room. Which, however, is not surprising. Everything that this person does is permeated with a special style and handwriting, expressing his bright personality.

He designed a rug that doubles as a coffee table. Just bent and secured the corner. You can put books down, put down a bottle of wine, or carefully lower a cup of hot coffee.

Another of his inventions is a carpet in the design of the living room, turning into an asymmetric sofa and then back into the carpet. There is a shelf on the side of the sofa. There you can put some household items. The photo shows a view of the living room from above and from both sides of the sofa.

In conclusion, I would like to remind you that carefully decorated interiors may go out of fashion.
