Are accent walls still in

What Trends Are Going Out of Style?

As you begin the process of decorating your house, figuring out your style can be a challenge. You’ll want to ask yourself, what do you want your home to be? Do you want a serene retreat? An energetic, colorful space for entertaining? Or perhaps an eclectic space to collect your treasures? It’s helpful to write down or save pictures of what inspires you. What colors, patterns, and styles do you gravitate to?

If you prefer a fresh design that is updated with current design trends, you’ll want to know trends that are on their way out. In this blog post, we’ll talk about why trends change so quickly and what is out when it comes to trends in 2022.

Outdated Interior Design Trends

As we all know, design styles come and go at a quick pace. Social media and the internet spread trends far and wide, only to move on quickly when things feel saturated. Influencers are always looking for the next big trend, which constantly changes things. With trends updating so fast, here’s a glimpse into some items in your home that could be outdated and might need a little refresh.

Are sectionals out of style?

Sectionals are here to stay; this sofa style is gaining popularity, partly due to everyone spending a lot of time at home in the past few years. Many people favor them over the smaller statement sofas that were popular in the past. They’re loved for their practicality and comfort. While some styles of sectionals are out, search for one that keeps your room feeling light and spacious.

Above all, consider what will work for your family. Will you be watching TV? Doing homework or family projects? That will determine whether you need a sectional for optimal seating or a sofa and chairs.

Are accent walls out of style?

With so many different design styles out there, you may be wondering, are accent walls out of style? Accent walls are still in, as long as they’re done correctly. When designing an accent wall in your space, avoid doing a solid, bold color. Instead, make an accent with unique texture (like beadboard or a textured compound over drywall) or with a subtle wallpaper in the same color tone as the rest of the space. Above all, make sure you’re choosing the right wall to accent. It’s wise to pick the wall that is the first one you see when you walk into a room.

Is dark wood furniture out of style?

While recent trends have steered towards light and bright rooms, dark wood furniture still has its place in modern design. The key is to balance dark furniture with contrasting flooring, bright colors, and plenty of light fixtures to keep your room from feeling dark or crowded.

Is oil-rubbed bronze out of style?

Oil-rubbed bronze is a classic fixture color that can be timeless in the right space. While oil-rubbed bronze isn’t out of style, a bright faux bronze or faux gold fixture could probably use a refresh. Many homeowners are opting for more modern, flat black fixtures that work well with most interior styles.

Is gray going out of style?

Neutrals are some of the most used colors in home design, with whites, beiges, and browns all having their moments. While once appealing for their modern look, gray walls, floors, and kitchens are on their way out in favor of warmer beiges and whites.

Are wood walls going out of style?

There’s always a place for wooden accent walls in a home. But the type of wood and accent wall matters. Shiplap and reclaimed wood are more likely to make your home look dated to the farmhouse craze of just a few years ago, while fluted walls and trim make your home look updated and modern.

Is acrylic furniture out of style?

Regarding acrylic furniture being trendy, it depends on the piece. It’s best to use acrylic furniture sparingly. Use a single acrylic table or chair to balance the weight in a room, pack an aesthetic punch, and add a modern touch to a room. Sculptural and curved furniture is big in 2022, as the softer shapes and angles are a trend for the year.

Is wood furniture out of style?

Wooden furniture has been a mainstay in homes for centuries and isn’t likely to go out of style soon. Natural materials like wooden furniture age well, have long-lasting beauty and have a timeless aesthetic. You’ll find many beautiful, modern wooden furniture pieces in our collection at San Francisco Design.

Are dressers out of style?

Dressers are a furniture staple for many bedrooms. Not only are they a beautiful design element, but they’re also a functional storage space for clothes. Matching bedroom sets are on their way out; now, the trend is mixed bedroom pieces that come together for a beautiful, curated design.

Are gallery walls out of style?

Gallery walls are a trend that’s still going strong. To make yours look more modern, choose coordinating frames with clean lines, using a piece of original art as the focal point. Incorporating sculptures or pottery adds dimension and depth to the wall.

Are Accent Walls Going Out Of Style?

An accent wall is a popular technique that adds that extra zing to an area and is used by many interior designers. However, is it outdated? Now, if you haven't heard the term before, an accent wall is a wall that is painted a contrasting color from the rest of the room, according to Diversified Painting.

An accent wall might be noticeably different from the rest of the room, or it can be subtly different. They explain that this is done to either attract attention to a feature of the space that would otherwise go unnoticed or to provide some much-needed ornamental flare. Walls painted in an accent hue draw the eye and may be utilized to unify an interior design plan.

So are they still in? If they are, how can you still incorporate the technique into your space to harness all its great benefits while making sure your space looks chic and trendy?

The pros and cons of an accent wall

Accent walls first appeared in the early 2000s as a way to add color to a space without running the risk of overdoing it, but according to Brown, they will never go out of style. HouseGrail asserts that they are more popular than ever because the last few years have been filled with bold statements and unique, eccentric ideas. And while some decorators like to take a fresh approach, most interior designers still enjoy adding an accent wall when it's appropriate.

As SINA Architectural Design says, accent walls have both benefits and drawbacks. While they can emphasize parts of a room and help you define your spaces more effectively, they also risk making your décor look outdated. Also, the improper wall or accent wall in the wrong room may make the area seem disjointed. They can also make a bold or crowded space worse, and sometimes, even make it look cluttered. This is why you must choose the correct room, color, and wall for a stunning accent. Otherwise, it might seem random. It can also distract from other good components around the area.

Because of this, it is sometimes very easy to make a mistake when using an accent wall. On the other hand, it could be exactly what a room is missing if it is appropriately designed and executed correctly. So, how can you make sure your accent wall works?

How to do it right

According to Farm Food Family, although accent walls are somehow becoming less common, there are still ways to incorporate the design technique into your space, as long as you do it right. For example, they recommend choosing an entryway-facing wall to accent, as this makes a strong first impression. You should also ideally choose a big wall.

A statement accent wall should be huge. Choosing a color that matches the other parts of the room can also help if you prefer your accent wall to be more understated and subtle. They also suggest not going overboard with patterns. Texture, on the other hand, is a better way to add interest to the room. Stencils or wallpaper are also great approaches as they add visual interest without being overpowering.

Also, consider what purpose you want your accent wall to serve. Brown notes that they draw the occupants' attention to a certain architectural element. For example, painting built-ins as an accent wall makes an architectural detail stand out. You could also accent doors or ceilings instead of a whole wall. You may also use this technique to define a space without putting up walls or rearranging furniture. For example, dining rooms are smaller than living rooms, but if you have odd alcoves, consider covering a wall in a different color.

Accent wall in the interior: where to start?

An accent in the interior can be created not only with the help of decor or lighting. An interesting solution is the accent wall. What is it, what interior is it suitable for, as well as pros and cons of interior designer Svetlana Galchenko @sgalchenko_design

What is an accent wall?

— An accent wall in an interior is a wall that differs sharply from others in color, texture or pattern.

The essence of such a design technique is to draw attention inside the room to a particular plane (wall, corner - yes, because there can be several accent walls, and even the ceiling can be an accent wall), and distract from others, perhaps not ideal in terms of design moments.

The accent wall always "solo" in the interior and attracts maximum attention.

What criteria should an interior meet in order for an accent wall to look harmonious in it?

— Reception with an accent wall looks good in interiors of any style: from classic to modern. You can apply this technique in any interior!

The only point: if your wall is highlighted with a picture, then it should be readable. It should not be blocked by voluminous backs from beds, sofas, it should be viewed in its entirety. And if this is a large drawing, then you should be able to move away from the wall to view.

Where is the accent wall most often used: in the bedroom, kitchen, living room, bathroom?

- I use accent walls very often in my projects in completely different rooms. In the bedroom, accent walls are most often chosen behind the bed or vice versa opposite it, in order to lie down to contemplate the pattern of beautiful wallpaper or your favorite paint color.

In the kitchen, accent walls highlight the dining area, sometimes the area of upper cabinets (if you have an open wall above the work surface without drawers). In the kitchen, these walls are highlighted, for example, with tiles with an interesting pattern, slats, paint of a different color, less often with wallpaper, as this is not very practical in this room.

In the living room, the wall behind the sofa or, conversely, in front of it, is often accented with paint, wallpaper, and beautiful moldings.

In a bathroom, the accent wall is usually the wall behind the bathtub or the wall with the sink. Reception with accent walls can be used everywhere, it is only important to remember that this wall should be clearly visible.

How to start choosing an accent? What can it be: color, pattern, texture?

— How to highlight the accent wall (color, pattern or texture) depends on the style of your interior. In classical-style interiors, wallpaper, a fresco can be glued to the accent wall, it can be highlighted with a pattern of moldings or another color.

Modern-style interiors rarely use wallpaper, so most often accent walls are distinguished by a different color or texture (like concrete, for example), as well as drawings and geometric patterns. And the walls are also distinguished by slats, wooden decorative panels, etc.

I advise you to support the color of the accent wall (pattern or drawing) in other interior items so that it does not seem alien and the interior looks more harmonious.

Doesn't this wall get boring over time?

— Of course, an accent wall can get boring over time. In the same way as the whole interior can get bored in general, because our tastes and preferences change over time. But the accent wall allows you to make the space deeper and more interesting, this is its main task.

What are the pros and cons of an accent wall?

— Definitely, accent walls make even the simplest and most concise interior more interesting. It is also the cheapest way to decorate your interior! Yes, repainting one wall or re-gluing it with beautiful wallpaper will take much less money than if you paint and paste all the walls like that. We very often use this when we want to save the client's budget: we take budget-friendly background wallpapers for the main part of the walls and decorate only one wall with expensive designer wallpapers!

I see only one (and even then, relative) disadvantage of this technique: if over time you want to rearrange the furniture, then perhaps the accent wall may be inappropriate for the new arrangement.

Tell us about your experience in creating accent walls in your interior. Is it difficult for an interior designer to act as a “customer” for himself?

— In the interior of my own apartment, we made accent walls in the living room behind the sofa and in the nursery. Although, to be honest, it seems to me that there are a lot of accent walls, since in one living room, combined with a hall, the walls are painted in 5 different colors: white, yellow, blue, blue and black tiles on the open wall above the working area of the kitchen. All these walls are different in color, and looking from different viewpoints are accented. But, of course, the drawing behind the sofa attracts most of all.

Creating a drawing was an experiment for me personally. In general, I treat my own repair as an experiment. I try to try new things and don't get upset when I fail. Repair for me is a pleasure. By the way, in the last apartment, the accent in the interior was a black chalk wall, on which all guests who came to the house were required to leave an autograph. Having tried this technique with a chalk wall on myself, I often used it in the interior of clients.

I didn't use a stencil to draw Christmas trees on the wall above the sofa. I just drew the contours on the wall with a pencil, bought the right shade of paint and painted over the contours. In fact, I expected that the work would go faster than it actually turned out. It's just that it's physically very hard and my arm gets tired, but then my family came to my aid. And we are very pleased with the result!

We painted mountains in the interior of the nursery. The drawing was also without a preliminary sketch. Just outlined the contours with masking tape and painted over with paint. Here, by the way, my 5-year-old son helped a lot.

I have many artists I know who could help me paint the walls, but I decided I wanted to do it myself and enjoyed it.

My personal advice when creating an accent wall: don't be afraid. Especially if you draw on the wall yourself. No one knows how it should be, no one will judge you for inaccuracy. But it will make your interior not the same as everyone else's and really yours.

Was it difficult for me to act as a customer? At first, yes, when I could not determine the main idea of the interior. But then I decided to treat myself and do what I ask from others: I collected references with the interiors I liked, caught the mood and tried to embody it. The implementation phase was easy. At the stage of the project is a little more difficult.

My interior is about travel. Not specifically, but at the level of associations and colors. The living room is about the forest, there is more bright and green. I really dream of putting a coffee table-stump there. Children's room about mountains and air, it is more blue. And there is a tent, and a round sconce imitates the sun. The bedroom will be about the sea. There is a scorching sun in a small bathroom, there is even a black floor, it is scorched by the sun, and the sink is in the shape of a pebble. And the big bathroom is about how you dived to the bottom of the sea: there is black and blue.

Handmade wallpaper

In this spacious apartment, designer Anna Pavlovskaya has made a stylish and cozy dining room the center of attraction. The walls of the room were painted in a light shade of Farrow & Ball, and one of them was decorated with handmade wallpaper with golden cranes. The drawing looks very elegant and gives the interior lightness, dynamics and a special atmosphere.

Designer Ekaterina Garashchuk made an accent wall in the bedroom for a young couple. According to her sketch, the artist Irina Yudenkova created a painting on the wall at the head of the bed on the theme of mountains. The painting has become a reference to the hobbies of the owners of the apartment and creates a feeling of calm and relaxation in the room.

Designer Malika Nurlan suggested a beautiful blue color for decorating the bedroom. The wall at the head was decorated with wall panels - it now looks like a chocolate bar. The breakdown of the panels was oriented towards the location of the bed and bedside tables - such symmetry refers to the classics and makes the interior more orderly.

Porcelain stoneware + wooden slats

Designer Aleksey Samotaev made one of the walls in the living room accent. To do this, I used large-format black porcelain stoneware and supplemented it with decorative wooden slats. This combination of finishing materials gives the interior a certain rigor and a feeling of comfort at the same time.

Linkrusta panel

Initially, designer Anastasia Kholoptseva thought of decorating the wall behind the headboard with a custom-made stucco panel made of gypsum. But the budget of such an art object turned out to be too large, so we had to quickly look for another option. The solution was a relief panel made of linkrusta with a pattern of convex weaves of banana leaves - it turned out elegant and unusual.

Soft wall panels

Designer Tatyana Korolkova suggested making the accent wall in this interior from soft wall panels. They were made to order in the workshop, and then folded into a single structure, like a puzzle. Each soft element was assembled into a frame and fixed on a square base. The shades of the fabric were matched to the basic tone of the interior.
