Should I get a 2 slice or a 4 slice toaster?

Most toasters can cook either 2 or 4 slices of bread simultaneously, however you can sometimes find some that cook 1 (which might be useful for studio living) or 3 at a time.

Here’s what each is most suited for:

If you’re storing your toaster on a benchtop or kitchen island, also think about how many other kitchen appliances are also stored in the same place.

On the left: The 2 slice 'Newgen' Dualit toaster. On the right: The 'Smart Toast' Breville 4 slice toaster.

What’s the difference between a toaster and a toaster oven?

While toasters simply toast things (namely bread), toaster ovens can toast as well as reheat and cook foods, such as a pizza, and depending on the model you buy, can sometimes even bake and broil food.

They usually have more advanced settings and let you set an exact temperature needed for the food you’re cooking. You can check out our Benchtop and Toaster Oven Buying Guide to see whether it may be more suited to you and your kitchen than a toaster.

What should I look for when buying a toaster?

Slot size

If you like hunkier slices of bread, then make sure your toaster can accommodate that by taking the width, length, and depth of the slot sizes into account.

Someone who sticks to regular-sized square loaves may not need as big a slot as someone who also likes to eat loaves of different shapes, such as sourdoughs and circle loaves. A toaster with a long slot, for example, can accommodate the flatter and wider slices of a Vienna loaf.

Settings

Cheaper toasters will usually only have basic settings for light, medium, and dark toast, or a dial that you can rotate to select a heat level.

Higher-end models can often also warm, reheat, and defrost bread. Some can also accommodate other bread types and shapes, such as buns, bagels, and crumpets.

You should look into how easy a toaster’s controls are to use. Some have electronic touchpads and LED displays that let you precisely choose a setting and clearly show the settings selected, as well as the remaining time left for your bread to toast.

Features

Here are some features to look out for that can help make your appliance easier to use and clean.

Cleaning and maintenance

A removable crumb tray is one feature that makes a toaster easier to clean. Some toasters also have spring-loaded trays that pop out so you can easily clean them.

It’s a good idea to give any bread toaster you’re considering a once-over, so that you can see whether there are any nooks and crannies on or in it where crumbs can get easily trapped.

Also take into consideration the material of a toaster. Stainless steel is widely considered to be more aesthetically pleasing than plastic, but takes a bit more elbow grease to clean. Fingerprints also clearly show on steel and chrome toasters.

Price

There are plenty of cheap toasters that may not possess the bells and whistles to cook different types of bread perfectly, but still get the job done. The 2 slice Kmart toaster is one of the most affordable models you can buy, costing just $7.50.

Most toasters start around the $30 to $40 mark, and can cost as much as $450 for high-end 4 slicers, however most Australians fork out somewhere between $50 and $60 for a new toaster.

Buy a kettle and toaster package to save money

If you’re also in the market for a new kettle, or if you want your toaster and kettle to match for a more aesthetic kitchen, some manufacturers offer toaster and kettle packages at lower prices than you’d pay if you bought each separately.

The bottom line

While choosing the right toaster is important because it can make or break your breakfast, you don’t need to go for a toaster jammed pack with special features if you don’t think you’ll use them all.

Reading reviews can help you see which features on a toaster actually hold up with daily use and whether it gives you consistent browning, so you can pick an appliance that helps you start each day off on the right foot.

The Best Toasters to Buy Today in Australia

1. Best Overall: Breville Smart Toaster

61 Reviews

Why we like it:
What customers say:

“Once you get the correct setting it cooks toast perfectly and gently raises the toast. No annoying pop up toast flying through the kitchen.”–Tigerman

Our top pick for the best toasters is the Breville Smart Toaster due to its innovative design. This unit has great features and is equally easy to use, so it can be an excellent choice for everyone who is looking to add flavour to their toasts. The ‎1,000-watt toasting system generates just the right amount of heat and will gently dry each toast without it burning. Still, ensure that you apply the right setting during the toasting process to avoid any complications.

The Breville Smart Toaster features two extra-wide slots that allow you to cook slices of varying thicknesses. That said, you won’t have to use standard size bread alone but can as well toast custom cut chunky slices. To add to this, the slots are deep, meaning all parts of the bread will get toasted. This unit dissipates heat uniformly, so your bread will be toasted evenly. The control panel has easy-to-use one-touch buttons that will allow you to customize the machine according to your needs.

All the controls are labelled for user convenience. This toaster has five browning settings that can help you toast your bread to the desired doneness. The LED indicator lights will let you know when the bread has been browned to the set level. There is also an ‘A Bit More’ that will provide you with extra crispy toasts. The defrost function can automatically adjust the toasting time, thereby allowing the food to thaw before it is toasted.

One of the things that we liked most about this toaster is that it has a motorised lift, which can lower or raise the toast at the push of a button. The lift mechanism can particularly come in handy when removing toasts from the toaster. It raises the slices high enough, so you won’t have to worry about burning the tips of your fingers when extracting the toasts. You can also lift the item being toasted to check the progress.

Other features worth mentioning include the ‘crumpet and fruit loaf” functions, both of which can prove helpful when preparing the aforementioned items. And because the crumb tray is removable, you can detach it with ease during cleaning. In terms of durability, the toaster is made of high-quality stainless steel to give users prolonged service. However, the Breville BTA825BSS is slightly expensive compared to most 2-slice toasters that sport similar features.

65 Reviews

Why we like it:
What customers say:

“I love the look of this toaster in my kitchen and it has two operating sides, each with a bagel setting to toast only one side of the bread which is great for toasting burger buns. Love it.”–Bern

The De'Longhi Icona Capitals 4 Slice Toaster is not only efficient but also stylish. It is one of the best four-slice toasters that you can consider adding to your appliance collection. This toaster can perform a wide range of functions, making it ideal for users who are after versatility.

Moreover, this appliance has a long list of features that can assist you when toasting bread, bagels, muffins, crumpets, and other items. Besides, there is a one-side bagel setting and other impressive functions that will provide you with a personalized user experience. With up to six browning settings, you can toast your pastries to a colour that matches your taste and preference.

We recommend the De’Longhi CTOC4003W to large households since it has a large capacity and can cook four toasts simultaneously. And unlike most 4-slice toasters that have one control panel, this unit has two. As such, you can control each pair of slots independently. This means you can employ different settings when making your toasts.

Plus, the reheat function can help you warm chilled toast to an ideal temperature. This toaster has multiple indicator lights that will show you the mode that is in use. In addition to being wide, the toasting slots feature a lift function for user safety. This equipment has two detachable crumb trays that allow for easy cleaning. The base is sturdily built for increased stability and also has non-slip feet.

The De’Longhi CTOC4003W has an attractive retro-style design and can go well with most kitchen décor styles. What’s more, it comes in a range of colours, so you are the one to pick the toaster that best pleases you. The bad: There have been complaints about the unit not toasting evenly, especially when thin slices of bread are used.

What customers say:

Been looking for a toaster for a while that will even toast crumpets without burning the bottom and this one does. Also like the timing function to see how long remains on toasting which is handy to see if you have time to put the kettle on, haha. – Linda

If you’re in the market for a toaster that does more than just brown slices of loaf bread, the Sunbeam TA6240 Maestro 2 Slice Toaster is a sound choice. This toaster is chock-full of features and functions, you won’t look at toasters the same way again after you use this device.

As mentioned earlier, this toaster does more than brown slices of your favourite loaf of bread, and this is because of its extra wide and deep bread slots. This allows you to toast any bread you want, as long as these fit in these slots. Bagels, baguette slices, sourdough slices, and other bread types can be easily toasted in this toaster.

One feature that stands out with this device is its ability to perfectly toast crumpets. This toaster actually has a crumpet setting that you can use to get perfect griddle breads every single time – toasty on top but without burning the bottom.

This toaster also has a couple of other functions that you’re sure to love, which are the Frozen and Reheat settings. The former lets you toast bread that comes directly from your freezer while the latter lets you keep your toast warm, reheating it every 30 seconds until you remove it from the device.

This gadget also lets you choose how light or how dark you want your toast to be. Choose from 6 different levels of toast to get the exact brownness you want. Simply choose from numbers 1 to 6 for the doneness of your bread slices.

One very notable feature that this toaster has, apart from the ones that we’ve already mentioned, is its ability to centre your bread slices in the slot every single time. No matter how thick or how thin the bread slice you’re placing in the toaster slot, it always ends up in the centre to ensure even toasting.

Also worth mentioning is the ease in which you can take out the crumbs via a removable crumb tray at the bottom. Simply pull it out, throw out the crumbs, wash and wipe down the tray, and return to the toaster after.

58 Reviews

Why we like it:
What customers say:

“Used a few times now, toasts evenly, good count down timer. Sleek design, looks good, happy with purchase :)”–Cintysmum

If your kitchen has a narrow worktop, the Sunbeam TA6440 Maestro 4 Slice Toaster can be a great choice. It is the only toaster on the list that has a digital display. This equipment has a timer countdown function that will provide you with real-time updates as the bread cooks. Aside from bread, you can also toast crumpets, muffins, bagels, etc.

Like the toaster just before it, the Sunbeam TA6440 features a QuickCheck function for your convenience. As such, you won’t have to power down the toaster mid-cycle when checking your toast. The control panel is nicely placed on the side and only has a few buttons, making it easy to use. Furthermore, the digital display is backlit to increase readability.

It has both defrost and reheat functions, thus making it even more convenient. The reheat feature can warm your toast without burning it, while the defrost setting allows you to thaw frozen slices before toasting. Due to its narrow design, the toasting slots are not as wide, but they are deep enough. The housing is durably built from stainless steel for enhanced corrosion resistance.

This toaster is unique compared to the rest of the units that we have listed in that you won’t have to watch it throughout the toasting process. Simply set the timer and let the intuitive circuitry system do its thing. The browning function is fully adjustable, so you can customise the toaster based on the level of brownness that you want. This is not really a flaw, but the two-slice toasting capacity may not suit some users.

7. Best Budget Toaster: Kambrook Wide Slot Toaster

Price reduction

203 Reviews

Why we like it:
What customers say:

“Buying a toaster for its value, I was surprised that it was suitable for toasting thick and wide bread types. Very happy with the purchase.”–Troy McIntyre

The Kambrook Wide Slot Toaster is the most affordable toaster on our review list, but that does not mean that is not reliable. It will allow you to toast a range of items without altering the flavours. Each toasting slot is fitted with side plates that ensure the slices of bread remain centred. That way, the toast won’t tilt sideways as you toast. As a result, your bread will cook uniformly without it burning on either side.

You can easily adjust the temperature using the 6-stage control dial. With the right setting, each toast that you make will cook to the preferred level. The crumb tray is conveniently placed on the front side to give you direct access during cleaning. Because the tray has a slide-style design, you can effortlessly detach it by hand.

Most of the toasters that we have covered in this review are made of stainless steel, but that does not apply to the Kambrook KTA120WHT. Its casing is made of plastic, so it is not as heavy. With the lift mechanism in place, you won’t have to dig your fingers into the toasting slots when your toast is ready. And since it has a defrost function, you can toast your bread right out of the freezer.

This appliance has all the essential features that you may look for in a 2-slice toaster. It even has a reheat function, which can help you boost the flavour of your toast in case it gets cold. Apart from being lightweight, the Kambrook KTA120WHT has a compact design, so it won’t cramp your worktop.

If you are looking for an efficient toaster that comes at an affordable price, this is the right product for you. Like Breville, Kambrook is also one of the renowned electrical appliance brands in Australia, so you can go for this toaster having the assurance that it will deliver commendable results in all toasting applications. To make it even better, it performs just as well as most high-end models on the market. However, not all people like the plastic housing.

How We Researched the Best Toasters

To create a list of the best toasters, we started by searching for the best-selling brands in Australia. We chose Breville—one of Australia’s best home appliance retailers, De’Longhi, Sunbeam, Russell Hobbs, Kambrook, and Kenwood. On top of that, we visited ProductReview.com.au to see which products are preferred most by Aussies.

This gave us an idea of what to look for, so we proceeded to e-commerce sites such as Amazon, Appliances Online, The Good Guys, eBay, and Harvey Norman to find the best toasters. The toasters that we have reviewed were chosen based on slot size, ease of use, and price. We also considered the features and ease of cleaning.

The consumer feedback from the above-mentioned sites gave us a better understanding of each toaster that we had picked. Out of the thirteen products that we selected, we were only left with seven by the time we were done comparing the appliances and going through the customer feedback.

Toasters: Buying Guide

The first step to buying a toaster or any other type of kitchen appliance is knowing what to look for. And although we’ve listed some of the top-rated toasters in Australia, you are the one to choose which one is best. Furthermore, not all toasters are the same.

Some of these units have additional features that put them a step ahead of other toasters. Plus, there are different types of toasters, so ensure that you pick the right toaster for your kitchen. We hope that this buying guide will help you find a toaster that matches your requirements.

Types of Toasters

Toasters can be categorised based on a range of factors. However, they are commonly classified as 4-slice and 2-slice. There are also single slot models, but they are not as popular compared to two-slice and four-slice units.

Four-slice Toasters

Four-slot tasters are ideal for large households. As the name suggests, this type of toaster allows you to cook up to four slices of bread at the same time. Nonetheless, they have a large footprint and are also relatively expensive.

We have reviewed three 4-slot models on our review list, and all are reliable. Nevertheless, we highly recommend the Sunbeam Alinea 4-Slice Toaster with High Lift because it has great features and is also easy to operate.

Two-slice Toasters

These types of toasters are generally smaller than 4-slot models. As such, they take up less counter space, making them a suitable option for those with small kitchens. Most of the toasters listed above are 2-slot units, so you can pick any that suits you.

What to Consider When Buying a Toaster
Slot size

When shopping for a toaster, you should consider the length and the width of each slot as this will determine the type of slices that you will be toasting. Some toasters can only accommodate standard-size slices, while others allow you to toast thick slices with ease.

If you cut your bread on your own, you should consider buying a toaster with wide slots. The Breville Smart Toaster and the Russell Hobbs RHT82BRU Carlton 2 Slice Toaster are a good example of such.

Ease of cleaning

Keeping your toaster clean is not only good for your health but will also allow you to make quality toasts. Most toasters feature detachable crumb trays that allow for fast and effortless cleaning.

Controls

Most toasters have buttons and adjustment knobs that will enable you to fine-tune the machine according to your needs.

Design

Toasters come in varying designs. With that being said, each unit has unique features that set it apart from other toasters. In addition to this, toasters are made of different types of materials. The goal is to find an efficient toaster that can blend well with your kitchen décor.

Features to Look for When Buying Toasters
Timer

Some toasters are equipped with timers that will allow you to cook your bread to the desired level without burning it to a crisp. Moreover, some models have built-in alert systems that will let you know when the toasting process is complete.

Browning control

Toasters with this feature will give you full control over the toasting process. As such, you can toast your bread to light brown, medium, or golden brown. If you are looking for a 4-slot toaster with adjustable browning, the De'Longhi Icona Capitals 4 Slice Toaster can be an excellent pick.

The Russell Hobbs RHT82BRU Carlton 2 Slice Toaster is ideal for those who need a 2-slot toaster. It offers up to seven browning settings that you can use.

Lift function

Extracting bagels, crumpets, and other types of pastries from a toaster can be somewhat challenging, and that is why some toasters have lift levels for hassle-free extraction. This feature will also prevent you from burning your fingers when removing the toasts.

Defrost setting

With this feature, you can thaw slices of bread before toasting them. A good number of modern-day toasters have this feature and we’ve also included some on our review list. If you prefer keeping your bread in the freezer, you should consider buying a toaster with this function.

Reheat function

The reheat function will allow you to warm your toasts after they’ve gone cold. You should, however, be cautious when using this function to prevent the bread from drying out.

Removable crumb tray

Toasters with this feature will make your work a whole lot easier when removing bread crumbs during the cleaning process.

Benefits of Toasting Bread

Food nutritionists purport that toasting can decrease the bread’s glycaemic index (GI). The study from the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows the effect that toasting has on bread. Foods with a higher GI value are known to increase blood sugar levels, thus making toasted bread a healthier alternative.

Nonetheless, toasting does not alter the carbohydrates or nutritional value of bread. Additionally, toasted bread is more flavourful than regular bread. This is primarily because it goes through the Maillard reaction, which occurs during the toasting process.

Pingtwitter - dualit newgen review: Great British toaster

Dualit Newgen toaster review (popup version): The best toaster money can buy and a great classic of British design.

Dualit Newgen is an updated version of the classic Dualit toaster that has been around for decades. I would say this is the best toaster you can buy. If you think the price of this is a bit insane, I can't say I don't agree with it as such. However, if you look at Newgen as a purchase that will bring you pleasure every day. until the end of your life , then suddenly it seems that this is a deal. Okay, maybe "deal" isn't exactly the right word, but you get my point.

Dualit Newgen is available in two and four layer models. Dualit also has 3 and 8 slice toasters which are not branded as Newgen but are very similar in appearance. The "real" Newgen models come in 22 great color options, so there's a Dualit toaster for everyone (who can afford a Dualit toaster).

I've been living with mine for a couple of years now, and even though they sent me the best toasters in the world in that time, I'm always happy to go back to my Dualit. Why? Well, let me tell you about it. ..

Dualit Newgen Price and Availability

Dualit Newgen is available at great stores and retailers worldwide. In the UK it costs £150 for the 2 slice version and £200 for the 4 slice version.

In the US two pieces cost about $240 and four pieces cost $350. In Australia prices seem to be everywhere but expect to pay something in the region of AU$400 for 4 segments and over AU$320 for 2 parts.

Actually prices vary a lot, but our handy price widgets above will let you know the best Dualit Newgen deals near you right now.

Dualit Newgen: design and build

This toaster has a very British feel, but not in a narrow sense. It's something industrial, homey, old-fashioned and timeless. Classic design. From the metal panels - available in 22 different finishes, as noted - to the whirring hour timer and rather clunky mode switch - everything about the Newgen is tactile yet practical.

Despite its premium character, the 2-slit Newgen is very compact. The 4-layer is naturally a bit bigger, but it's not as big of a deal as the KitchenAid Artisan Toaster.

Toasters aren't exactly a hotbed of innovation, but Newgen's design is different from just about every other toaster on the market. It has a few features that I'm surprised no one thought to copy over the years. Undoubtedly, Dualit is very zealous in protecting its copyrights and patents.

In particular, where most toasters have a fold-out spring-loaded handle or a motorized button to move the toast up and down, Newgen has a nifty little lever. Want to see how your toast is doing? You can open it to take a look without turning off the heating elements or resetting the timer. Not done yet? Then down again. If it's done, just disable the timer and turn off the elements by resetting the timer.

The genius of the toasting lever doesn't stop there. If you want your toast to stay warm, you can turn off the elements but turn them down. This means that the residual heat from toasting is used to keep the toast toasty. Or at least above room temperature.

The mode selection knob allows you to select how many of the 2 or 4 slots to use at any given time. This saves you energy costs and is especially convenient for larger models.

The 4-slice model also offers settings for toasting bagels on one side only if you prefer. For some reason, there is no double cut. On both models, the rotary timer includes the ability to defrost frozen bread before toasting.

The

Newgen has been designed for commercial use, so every part, including the parts themselves, can be replaced or repaired. Each toaster comes with a one year warranty and two years for the heating elements. After that, if any part wears out, Dualit will fix it for a fee. If you look online you will find just about every part available (most of them are pretty cheap) as well as tutorials on how to install them yourself.

This means that in theory your Newgen should last you a lifetime with a minimum of fuss and grief.

Regardless, Dualit issues some pretty alarming security warnings with this toaster. To feel completely safe, you obviously need to make sure it's not directly under a wall, and Dualit also recommends unplugging the Newgen when not in use. I have to say that I didn't actually follow any of those instructions, and - touch the tree - my house hasn't burned to the ground yet. You are real should follow the instructions just in case.

Dualit Newgen: toasting performance

Of course, none of the above would matter much if Newgen didn't create flawless toast. Considering that a toaster that costs perhaps as little as one-tenth that of a 4-slice model can happily produce perfectly matching toast, the Newgen should really live up to that metric.

I'm happy to report that with a minimum of practice, Newgen does indeed deliver curse thin toast, bagels, crumpets and other things that can be crammed into a toaster. The superior heating elements and wide range of timings offered by the hour timer mean you can do everything from lightly reheating bread to getting proper charcoal on more artisan bread styles.

Because Newgen toast is very uniform, and you can lift the bread at any time to see how it fares, it's also difficult - though admittedly not impossible - to ruin the toast.

The slits are also well sized and can accommodate a wide variety of shapes and sizes of bread, as well as slices of various thicknesses. The good travel of the lever-operated toast raise and lower means that smaller pieces of toast don't have to be scooped out with tongs, while taller pieces are toasted from top to toe.

I'm not going to pretend that making toast is some kind of epic struggle with cheaper toasters. However, I feel like you are getting your money's worth with Dualit Newgen. It eliminates most of the minor annoyances you can get from cheaper competitors and consistently delivers great toast.

Dualit Newgen: Judgment

Of the "big three" toasters - the Sage/Breville Smart Toaster, the KitchenAId Artisan, and the Dualit Newgen - there's no doubt that the Dualit is my favorite.

Yes, this is a luxury item. I know most people would find it ridiculous to spend that amount on a toaster. However, if you've got the money to spare - or you're just fucking love toast - this isn't a purchase you'll regret. It will turn your kitchen into a treat, but it doesn't have the slightly obnoxious, "look how expensive I am" design of some of the other high end toasters I could mention.

In short, if you want the best In any case, when it comes to toasters, Dualit Newgen is what you need. A design classic that will never go out of style as long as there are people in the world craving toast.

SAGE SMART TOAST OVERVIEW: DESIGN AND CREATION

Perhaps more interesting (and what you pay for) are five automatic functions designed to make toasting with ease. The buttons are self-explanatory so you don't have to parse complicated characters.

There is a toast / Cancel, "A little more", which allows you to toast one minute longer. A Quick Look allows you to take a look at the toasts without disrupting the process. There are also Crumpet/bagel and Frozen features that do what you would expect. And with a simple slide-out crumb tray on the side of the toaster, it's easy to clean and maintain.

Sage Smart Toast looks simple yet sophisticated with a durable brushed stainless steel case. Unlike other huge premium toasters, it is light enough to take up little space in the kitchen.

2 slice toaster has motorized slots for easy toasting (no more springy arms!) and a high lift mechanism for easy removal. SAGE SMART TOAST OVERVIEW: Toast PERFORMANCE

Those who worry about the results of their toast will love the Sage Smart Toast. First, and most importantly, it produces perfect, evenly toasted bread every time. Result!

The slits are wide enough to fit thick slices, sourdough or hand cut bread, although they may be slightly shorter for larger breads or pitta. In any case, the toasting of the crumpets and muffins was perfect, without any breaks.

Motorized slots are an ingenious idea (or maybe I'm just lazy), a refreshing change from the traditional down lever. The bizarre "downward sliding" of the bread is smooth and quiet, and when the toast is done, it simply rises with a little beep.

Although I haven't taken full advantage of the Frozen setting, I've found that A Little More Time and Quick Look are especially handy for perfect browning. Apart from the lack of a Keep Warm setting, which can be a drawback for those who are always on the go, this is probably one of the best toasters on the market.
