There are few things more annoying than a slow or clogged drain — greasy water sitting in your kitchen sink, or soapy water standing in your shower or bathtub is not a pretty sight. The good news is that a clogged or slow drain can often be cleared without calling in a plumber.
According to the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab experts, the safest first step to clearing any clog is to use the correct plunger based on where a clog is located (sink or toilet). Be sure to cover any overflow outlet first for maximum pressure, turn off the water supply and always use a plunger before (not after!) any chemical cleaner to prevent the chemical from splashing back up onto you or into your eyes. What to look for when shopping for the best drain cleaner.
Different cleaners work for different types and severity of clogs — for example, one that works for a slow-flowing drain will probably not work for a complete blockage.
Here are two types of cleaner to look for while shopping:
Enzymatic cleaners are slower to clear clogs but are usually less harmful to your plumbing (or yourself). The enzymes (bacteria) in the cleaner slowly break down organic soils such as hair and food that can be found in your drain but might not be strong enough to dissolve a complete blockage.
Chemical-based drain cleaners work the fastest, but also have the potential to cause more damage. Depending on the type of pipes you have in your home, damage can occur when using chemicals. PVC pipes can warp or soften from heat generated by chemical use. For metal pipes, excessive use can cause pipes to corrode and in extreme cases cause holes to develop.
How to use drain cleaners safely
Here are some important precautions to take when clearing clogged drains:
✔️Precisely follow all directions on a drain cleaner's label.
Be sure the room is well-ventilated. Do not leave the drain cleaner inside drains for longer than stated.
✔️Wear gloves and eye protection to protect against splash-back. Do not stand in the tub or shower stall when pouring the drain cleaner.
✔️Carefully pour the drain cleaner to avoid spillage. The caustic nature of some chemical cleaners can damage surrounding stone, marble, stainless steel and other materials. Never mix drain cleaners with other cleaning products — even homemade — or pour a second cleaner down if the first doesn't work. The chemical reaction can cause toxic gas or even an explosion.
✔️Always flush the drain well after using a chemical cleaner, following the package instructions for the temperature of the water and how long you should rinse.
✔️Never try to clear a toilet clog with a chemical cleaner.
Use a plunger, a toilet auger (a standard drain snake can damage or crack the porcelain) or a natural enzyme cleaner. If the clog still remains, call in a professional plumber.
How to Make a DIY Drain Cleaner
Once a month or so, we recommend trying this homemade solution. It's not powerful enough to clear a complete clog but can help keep your drains fresh and flowing.
- Mix ½ cup baking soda with ¼ cup table salt and pour it down the drain
- Slowly pour in 1 cup of warmed distilled white vinegar
- Let the foaming bubbles stand 10-15 minutes and then flush with hot tap water for 15-30 seconds.

There is more than one way to clear out the toilet and some of these ways include common household items that you likely already have.

Plunging a clogged toilet is no fun, but there’s a better way.
To unclog a toilet without a plunger, head to the kitchen for some dish soap. The slippery soap can help lubricate the clogged pipe and allow the lodged debris to slide down more easily.
Pour about a half-cup into the toilet. If you’re out of dish soap, chop a bar of hand soap into small chunks and drop the pieces into the toilet.

Add Hot Water
If dish soap alone doesn’t do the trick, adding water might move things along. Fill a bucket with hot bath water (boiling water could cause a porcelain toilet to crack) and pour the water into the toilet from waist level. The force of the water could dislodge the cause of the clog.

DIY Wire Hanger Drain Snake
A more severe blockage could require manually moving the item. To do this without a plunger, unravel a wire coat hanger until it’s straight.
Push one end of the wire into the clogged area. Prod the debris until it becomes free and flows down the drain. A drain auger is a better choice, but the wire hanger will work in a pinch.

Baking Soda Mixture
As an alternative to using dish soap for those situations where you’re without a plunger, try this all-natural solution. Pour one cup baking soda and two cups vinegar into the toilet. Allow it fizz for a half hour. If clog doesn’t dissipate, try the hot water trick.

Use a Plastic Bottle to Create Water Pressure
This unclogging trick could get messy.
Start by removing as much water from the toilet bowl as possible; you can do this by repeatedly filling a small container with toilet water and pouring the water into a bucket. Next, fill a large plastic bottle with warm water.
Place your thumb over the top of the bottle and fit the top end of the bottle into the outlet at the bottom of the toilet. (You’ll want to wear rubber gloves for this step.) Remove your thumb and squeeze the bottle so the water inside shoots down the pipe. The added pressure could dislodge whatever was causing the clog.

How to choose a good toilet cleaner?
The best toilet cleaners need to act quickly, clean from various types of dirt and remove the most difficult of them: limescale and rust. Below are the main parameters by which you can choose a successful product.
- Consistency. A gel or viscous texture is optimal. Such products are economical, drain more slowly, they are convenient to apply under the rim of the toilet bowl and in hard-to-reach places. In addition, they dissolve longer, which means they have time to act on pollution under water.
- Composition. Look for acids in the composition: hydrochloric, sulfuric, sulfamic, oxalic, orthophosphoric, formic, citric, etc. These are excellent fighters against rust and calcium deposits - all known limescale.
Usually 5-15% acids are enough to keep the toilet bowl clean with timely and regular cleaning. Products with a concentration of 15% or more and a pH of 1-2 are considered highly acidic, they cope with the most persistent pollution. The presence of chlorine (in the form of hypochlorites) adds a strong disinfecting effect and whitens enamel and faience, but be aware that chlorine is quite caustic and requires respiratory protection measures. But lye in sanitary gel is needed only if you plan to use it to clear blockages. But in this case, it is still better to purchase a special remedy for blockages. - Bottle. The ideal packaging for such a product is an elongated curved bottle with a thin spout. With it, it is easy to dispense the gel and it is convenient to apply it under the rim of the toilet bowl, and this is one of the dirtiest and hardest to reach places.
