There’s a lot to consider when buying a mattress — beginning with size, comfort and price.
We’ll leave size and comfort up to you, but we can help you sleep better by knowing that you got a good price. Here are some of the best times of the year to buy a mattress.
Late winter and early spring
When: March or April.
Why: By March or April, new mattress models will typically be in stores, according to Scott Paladini, CEO and founder of Bear Mattress, an online mattress company. As new mattresses arrive, shoppers can save money by opting for an older model or a floor sample straight from the showroom floor.
Why? It’s out with the old and in with the new. “Eventually the retailers will have to remove all of those beds and put the new models down,” Paladini says.
What to expect: A floor model could save you as much as 50% off the price, according to Julie Tramonte, a sleep advocate for Verlo Mattress, which sells online and in stores. She recommends asking a manager when the store plans to turn over its inventory, as timing can vary. Keep in mind that floor models have likely been tested out by other shoppers.
Holiday weekends
When: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Black Friday.
Why: Mattress industry experts agree — holiday weekends are a prime time to shop. You can find deals throughout the year, but holidays offer widespread sales, says Jody Putnam, a divisional president at Mattress Firm, which sells online and in stores.
“Most of the time there’s usually a couple beds here or a couple there that will be at sale prices, but at those major holidays, a larger portion of the products in the marketplace will be marked down,” Putnam says.
What to expect: Paladini estimates shoppers can save from 10% to 20% if they buy a mattress during a holiday promotion.
All year
When: Your current mattress is 7 to 10 years old.
Why: “I think you should buy a mattress when you need to buy a mattress,” says Leo Echeverria, the COO of Snuz, a memory foam mattress that’s sold online. The general consensus among the experts? A 10-year-old mattress is nearing the end of its life.
Your body can also help you determine when it’s time to get a new one. For example, Tramonte of Verlo Mattress says you may not notice your current mattress is lacking comfort until after you go on vacation and sleep on a different mattress.
What to expect: If your back or neck is aching, there are ways to find a good price — even if you can’t make your purchase during the times listed above. See some tips below.
Mattress-buying tips
Keep these money-saving tactics in mind when buying your new bed:
Look online. You’ve probably watched mattress unboxing videos on social media. Online retailers such as Bear Mattress, Snuz and Lull offer convenience and ship their mattresses to you in a compact box. Aside from the novelty, online prices can be competitive. This can also give you leverage if you decide to shop at a store, says John Garcia, marketing director at Snuz.
Test it out. Before you pick one, sleep on it. Many sellers offer a trial period. If you take a mattress home and decide to return it within a certain window (sometimes 100 to 120 nights), you’ll get a refund. That’s especially helpful if you buy from an online seller and haven’t felt the mattress first.
Get a guarantee. Look for a retailer that will guarantee its price, Putnam says. Some sellers will refund you the difference if the mattress you bought goes on sale within a given period after your purchase. At Mattress Firm, the 120-night price-guarantee window means you’ll likely be able to capitalize on the pricing from at least one major sale period.
Negotiate. Paladini says shoppers can negotiate. If you can’t get a retailer to come down in price, they may be willing to throw in a free pillow or accessory to make it worth your while.
Pay attention to price, not percentage off. A 50% off sale isn’t necessarily better than a 10% off deal, especially if the former mattress was substantially more expensive to begin with. It’s best to look at both the original and final price of the mattress, not just the percentage of the discount, Tramonte says.

Best Time to Buy Mattress - 2022 Buyer's Guide
You may think that buying a mattress isn't really predicated on the time of the year and that you could do it whenever you want. Well, while you most certainly can, it's far more beneficial if you took some of the following advice into account.
The time of the year has a significant impact on your purchase, and it's going to affect one of the most decisive factors – the price. If we have to be entirely straightforward, you shouldn't buy a mattress unless it's heavily discounted.
And, with this in mind, if you know when do beds go on sale, you'd be able to save quite a lot.
Navigation
With this in mind, we'll walk you through some important considerations that you might want to account for and, hopefully, they will help you spend a significant amount of money that you could spend on something more pressing. Let's have a look.
Brick & Mortar vs. Online
Online – Lower Prices
It seems like everything is being sold online these days. The larger manufacturers, as well as some smaller players on the market have already established prominent online platforms to ensure that they are as close to the customer as they can.
This brings quite a lot of perks. Due to the cutting competition, the prices online are usually lower than those in the brick & mortar venue. The reasons are quite simple – companies compete with worldwide distributors online while at their brick & mortar shop they only compete on a local level.
Let's face it – you are unlikely to travel to another city, let alone country, to pick up your mattress.
Being online, however, allows you to order it from the other part of the world and have it shipped directly to your doorstep. This is something significant to account for. Additionally, companies can save money from the fact that they don't have to rent shops to exhibit the mattresses and personnel to work there, which allows them to make larger discounts.

Physical Store – Try The Bed
An old-school brick & mortar venue is still the preferred option for a lot of people and there is only one serious reason for that. This is the fact that you'd be able to conveniently try out the mattress before you buy it. You will be given a chance to lay down, feel the sensation and decide whether it's your mattress or not – it's as simple as that.
On the other hand, the company needs to either rent or build the shop and to employ all those kind people who are showing you around. This adds up to the expenses and, hence, you are likely to have a little bit more than you would if you had ordered the mattress online.
Average Cost of a Mattress
This is a common question, but there is no one-off answer. There are different types of mattresses which range in prices depending on a tremendous amount of factors. However, let's give it a go and try to break it down.
A quality innerspring mattress, for example, would cost around $900 on average. However, the prices range between $500 and $2000.
On the other hand, a memory foam bed is going to average a price tag of $1000. Once again, though, the price starts from about $300 and ends up to $4000 and even more. You can apparently find something according to your personalized budget.
The most expensive type is latex bed. They average a price of $1650. The entry point here is higher, hence the elevated average price. They would start as low as $750 and go to as much as $4000 and more.
The factors are different, and they include the material, thickness, firmness, softness, comfort, support, warranty, reliability, and, of course, the brand itself.

Best Month to Buy a New Bed
May is the Best
May is truly the best month to purchase your mattress, and the reason for that is fairly simple. The industry, as a whole, usually rolls out the new products in June and they are hot throughout September.
So, when May comes, the companies want to clean out their older models. This is something convenient, and if you follow this pattern, you might truly get some good deals which would substantially discount the price of the bed. Keep this in mind.
American Holidays
The weekend of Memorial Day with its sales might as well be the best time to get your mattress. This is because it combines two discounting factors – the month of May, as we've already established, as well as the holiday weekends.
At the same time, national holidays like the following tend to be particularly good times to purchase your mattress as retailers tend to have rather good deals. You might even get a good deal on Martin Luther King Day and the weekends surrounding the holiday.

Online Deals
Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday, as well as Black Friday, are traditionally the busiest days of the year for online retailers. Cyber Monday is the first Monday right after Thanksgiving, and it's a popular day for serious discounts.
If there is a time to get a great deal, it's then. Sit on your laptop, pack up all the patients in the world and wait for the hot deals which are ready for the taking.

Amazon Prime Day
Amazon Prime Day is an event exclusively made for Prime members. First, it was made to celebrate Amazon's 20th birthday in 2015, and it has been a massive success for this company, so they decided to keep it and announce it every year. This is a one-day ONLY global event, and it's the best place to buy a mattress online, for your home. You can find a lot of great deals on that day, so prepare yourself for that day and find the bed of your dreams.

Overstock Sales
Overstock sales are a great option to find some serious discounts. You can look for those online or ask around to find out whether or not some local mattress shops are offering something of the kind. Keep in mind that this is a great way to purchase a premium-quality solution for a price which is far less than the actual one.
Find Stores That Are Closing
Another great strategy is to look for stores which are closing. They would usually rush to sell everything they can to minimize their losses or to clear inventory to hit another location or to close for good. In both cases, final sales are an excellent source of serious discounts that you ought to account for.
Should You Buy a Used mattress
Unlike purchasing used appliances, for instance, you shouldn't buy a used mattress. In fact, it's one of those items that would certainly be up on the list of things that you should only buy brand new. You don't want a mattress filled with bed bugs as this is a common issue.
On the other hand, your hygiene should always be a top priority. And, even though you could, in fact, steam clean it, you would still know that someone else had slept in your bed long before you ever did.
Conclusion
There is a tremendous amount of different opportunities that you can take advantage of to purchase a great mattress for a seriously discounted price.
Take a look at all of the above and pick the one which serves you best. In fact, you could go through all of the options and find the deal that's saving you the most money.

In pursuit of a mattress - the company "Matraskin"
How to understand the intricacies of trading tricks.
I am playing an exciting game. First I go to the mattress store and ask what you sell. Then, clasping my hands, I exclaim along with the seller: "Everything is for sale !!!". Oh, how we laugh, the seller and I. And while he's still giggling, I turn and walk away because I hate those stupid mattress salesmen.
Is there a more maddening industry? They mislead us with silly product names (Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Fletcher Ultra Plush Pillowtop or Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Brookmere Plush). They soar our brains with pseudoscientific terms ("independent springs", "bases from Mikrotek", "Fiberlux"). And they burden us with useless features ("silk diaper"). It's like buying a used car - and almost as expensive - I've seen mattresses go up to $7,000. What should the buyer do?
The secret to selling mattresses is that they sell, for the most part, something as incalculable as comfort. The mattress business is 99% marketing. So maybe just buy yourself the cheapest mattress you can afford and stop there because they are all very similar? And that's all there is to know. But, read on - the world of sleep products is very charming, and I will reveal it to you.
Which brand is best?
Box springs, especially from Big S (Simmons, Serta, Sealy), dominate the market. But how do you choose from Serta, Sealy, Stearns, Foster and King Koil? Or, for that matter, between Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale Lenore and Simmons Beautyrest Do-Not-Disturb Royalty Ultra?
Here are some facts: mattress manufacturers rename the same products for each individual retail store. Different labels, exactly the same stuffing. What for? They are bewildering. It is very difficult to buy something when you do not understand the difference. Luckily for you, they vary only slightly, not only within individual brands, but even among different brands.
The heart of a spring mattress is the springs. Or is it just foam rubber, latex, cotton or wool. But the well-known mattress manufacturers (with a few exceptions) all use springs from the same company, Leggett and Platt, in both the most expensive mattresses and the cheapest. It's like every single car on the market, whether it's a Lamborghini or a Kia, uses Ford engines. Except, of course, that mattresses aren't as complex as cars. In fact, they are so simple that there is no real difference between them all.
Conclusion: ignore the brand name. She means nothing. Just pay attention to comfort. This brings us to the next question:
How firm should the mattress be?
This is the main mattress paradox. You sleep on springs because they are softer than the floor, but you also prefer good, stiff springs, besides that, you add latex padding on top of the springs for softness, but you also want the latex to be tight, and then, in As a result, you place a strong spring box down to give it some bounce. Why go all the way up and down the hardness scale, why not just pick the hardness you prefer and stop there? My favorite mattress name embodies the paradox: Simmons Beautyrest World Class Granite Plush. Granite plush???
Let's take a closer look at the features of a mattress that are responsible for firmness, softness, or both.
Number of springs and wire thickness: At first it seemed to me that the number of springs and wire thickness were the key elements of a mattress. I spoke to some journalists who specialize in this area, who do not hesitate to use the numbers received from mattress manufacturers. The possession of these figures did not help me at all to lift the veil of the mystery of the properties of the mattress. Initially, I assumed that this data was an empirical value: thicker springs mean fuller and better support. But it turned out that everything is not so simple. Some mattresses contain more springs but thinner wire. Others have thicker wire and fewer springs. And each uses radically different designs, making comparison difficult.
Larry Thomas of Furniture Today - the man who was introduced to me as the "guru of the bedroom industry" - told me that spring count is "overrated" and "it's not a good indicator." Of course, if you pay more, you theoretically get a better spring design, but is it better enough to make a difference? I'm sure not. Even for mattresses that differ in price by a thousand dollars. So don't worry about numbers, worry about comfort.
Pillowtops: A pillowtop is a soft layer of latex (or cotton or wool) sewn onto the surface of a mattress. Pilot tops are very popular. They add a hundred dollars to the cost. They are, in my opinion, a mass rip-off. You can recreate their effect with a cheap mattress topper. And why then spend money on springs: only to drown out their action with a giant pillow? If you really want to sleep on latex or cotton, buy a latex or cotton mattress.
Thickness: A new fad. I have seen mattresses from Stearns and Foster (a brand owned by Sealy) that are about 2 feet (60 cm) thick (and cost $5,000). It looks like they sewed the futon on top of the spring block. The experts I spoke to say the thickness is just a trick: it makes the bed look more comfortable in the store. If you notice a difference, well, it's up to you, but the thickness of the mattress is not vital to the bed. You can achieve the same comfort with less height (and weight, respectively - some mattresses weigh over 200 pounds (90 kg) and it is very difficult to lift them up the stairs).
Now the mattresses are getting so thick that people complain that they can't see the headboards of their beds. The modern industry is reacting accordingly: they make the spring box thinner. Which of course brings us to. ..
Spring Boxes: I found them to be completely redundant. Think about it. Suppose you place an additional spring box under an existing spring box for more "elasticity" and "support". Then another spring box under these two. When to stop? In addition, remember that the spring box significantly increases the cost of the mattress. The only strong argument I've heard in their favor is that the spring box protects your mattress from wear and tear. But I cannot confirm or deny this fact.
Many Europeans use beds without a spring box. Are they complaining about it? I do not use spring box and do not experience any inconvenience. It's like the princess and the pea. If you need 17 layers - so be it. But if you only need one layer, don't buy a spring box, unless of course you prefer to sleep high and couldn't think of anything better than placing the mattress on top. My recommendation: put your mattress on the floor - this will save money on the stand. Give in to gravity!
Is a firm mattress really good for your back?
I asked an orthopedic surgeon from an organization called the National Foundation for Spinal Health about this. He said the mattress should support you in "action position" - the normal curve of your back when you stand upright. If the mattress evens out the shape of the curve (too hard) or increases the curves (too soft), the result is back pain. According to him, the supporting spring unit works better than latex, air or water. NFSH recommends: Simmons Back Care mattress. Problem solved, can I go home? Not! I soon discovered that NFSH was funded by companies, including Simmons in particular! All clear! Next orthopedic surgeon, please.
This surgeon is independent and no longer in practice. He debunked the myth that hard mattresses are better than anything else. This is true only if you experience acute back pain, but in the case of ordinary back pain, the mattress will not make a significant difference in your well-being. "The back is a complex structure," he said. "Back pain has a lot to do with how you're built, not your mattress." Therefore, do not worry when buying a soft, comfortable mattress. It does not matter. (Short note: hard mattresses sell more in the northeast region [Yankees repent, don't they?], while soft mattresses predominate in the south.)
Are all these additional features really necessary?
No. Pay no attention to them. For example...
Fabric & Stitch: People often buy a mattress based on how it looks in the store. It is so stupid. You will cover the mattress with a sheet when you get home. Belgian jacquard? Yes indeed.
Non-turning design: Manufacturers recommend turning the mattress every three months. This is even stated in some warranty statements. However, Simmons' newest addition, the Simmons Beautyrest 2000, boasts a non-flipping design. And it sells like hot cakes (for which, by the way, flipping remains a must). Why? People love time-saving innovations - we're too lazy to flip. But what does this really mean? This means that the filler is only on one side of the mattress, on which you can sleep. And this means that if a spot or a gap appears on the side on which you sleep, then you are hit. They should have called this "no flip" mattress. It's as if the car ("Don't change the oil") had a sealed tank.
Warranties: Almost all problems with normal use (that are covered by the warranty) happen within the first month or so. Ignore the 10 and 20 year warranties. Just make sure there is a 30 or 60 day return guarantee on the mattress. This is important not only if the mattress has defects, but also if you simply did not like it upon closer examination.
What about foam, air, water and latex?
These legendary "four elements" of classical mythology can also be included in a mattress. Material "with memory" is now very popular. I tried the Tempurpedic mattress and I liked it - it adapts to the shape of the body. But I'm not ready to spend $1500 on a mattress, even if it's from Sweden.
Select Comfort air mattresses have recently become popular (although sales of spring mattresses are still high, with an 80% market share). I didn't like the feel of the air mattress, even though I can adjust its firmness with a pump. When you lie on it, the air doesn't feel as bouncy as latex. And it feels like during a camping trip. The cost of such a mattress is from $ 550 for 180 x 200 cm.
There were waterbeds nearby (they still make up half the market for fancy mattresses), but I couldn't find one to lie on.
Finally, an independent mattress manufacturer swore to me that latex mattresses are the best. (Coincidentally, he makes latex mattresses.) I tried to lie down on a latex mattress and did not feel much difference from the spring block, but these are just my feelings.
Futons?
Of course, why not? They are cheap, partly because they don't use a spring box. But what is a futon these days? The bottom line is that "he misses." Now they even produce futons with a spring block. At the same time, a real box spring mattress consists of layers of latex and cotton, creating the effect of a futon of bygone days.
Conclusion.
If you can't tell the difference between a $200 mattress and a $9 mattress00 $ (I don't, but maybe you see), choose the cheaper one. In any case, they are all very similar. "If a mattress costs more than $1,500, then you pay for the name," says Larry Thomas.
There are plenty of great mattresses at affordable prices. Of course, to some extent, you get what you pay for (better spring design, tighter latex, prettier fabric), but don't focus too much on all of that. Lie down on a mattress in the store for a while and trust only your own feelings. Remember: during sleep, all mattresses seem the same.
Seth Stevenson
Mattress didn't fit
You have purchased a mattress that is unusable for some reason. An expensive thing that promised convenience and comfort brought problems. Do not be upset, although the situation is unpleasant, but solvable. The law protects the rights of the consumer, and a conscientious seller strives to follow one of the postulates of successful trading: the buyer is always right.
Without going deep into legal casuistry, let's look at the legal aspects, guided by which you can regain the joy of using a quality product.
According to the existing and current GOST (interstate standard) 19917-93, mattresses are non-food durables and belong to the category "Furniture for lying and sitting". Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 55, edition of 08/01/2005, states that goods in this category are not subject to return or exchange. According to article 26.1 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation of February 7, 1992 N 2300-1 (as amended on July 29, 2018) "On consumer protection" and article 26.1. The remote method of selling goods (introduced by Federal Law of December 21, 2004 N 171-FZ) the consumer has the right to refuse the goods at any time before its transfer, and after the transfer of the goods - within seven days.
But there is another, equally important, present Consumer Protection Act. In paragraph 1 of article 25 it is written that the return of goods of good quality is made.
Return of a mattress of good quality
Good quality of goods is considered if the following conditions are met:
To get a refund of the money paid for the product, you will need to write an application. Money is returned to the details specified by the buyer within 10 working days.
Reputable companies most often meet the needs of the buyer and give a period of 7 - 14 days, so that the client is finally convinced of the correctness of the choice. During this period, you can return the mattress of good quality without any problems. And yet, before buying, it is better to discuss this nuance with the seller and obtain confirmation of the possibility of a return.
Before signing the delivery note and confirming the acceptance of goods of good quality from the seller, be sure to check the information about the purchased product. In Art. 10 of the Law "On Protection of Consumer Rights" indicates what information the buyer should receive about the mattress:
- name and technical characteristics of the product;
- information about consumer qualities, product passport;
- address, name of the mattress manufacturer and importer;
- warranty with the date of sale, original stamp and signature of the seller, usually 18 months from the date of purchase of the goods;
But even the most meticulous buyer is not able to foresee absolutely all the details and see through time the situations that await him during the operation of the mattress.
Return of an item of inadequate quality
You can return an item of inadequate quality literally from the doorstep upon delivery from the seller. For example, you found a spring that crawled out of a mattress, saw a defect in the skin, cuts on it. In this case, an Act is drawn up on the refusal to accept the defective goods indicating the defects noticed and an application for a refund is written if the payment has already been made.
If hidden manufacturer's defects are discovered and the fact that the purchased mattress turned out to be of inadequate quality is revealed, the letter of the law is on your side. Arm yourself with the knowledge of Article 18 of the Consumer Rights Protection Law and start fighting for justice. Please note that customers of stores and buyers using the services of Internet commerce are equally well protected. Online shoppers have the option to cancel an order prior to receiving it. The Government of the Russian Federation and Rospotrebnadzor took care of the citizens of the Russian Federation.
In Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation "On approval of the Rules for the sale of goods by remote means" dated September 27, 2007 No. 612, letters from Rospotrebnadzor "On the suppression of offenses in the remote method of selling goods" dated 08.04.2005 and "On monitoring compliance with the Rules for the sale of goods remotely" dated 10/12/2007, the distance trading regulation was prescribed.
Mattress with defects
The most common types of manufacturing defects are damage to the mattress lining or the appearance of depressions, indicating internal defects in the product. A visible defect in the fabric is detected almost immediately, and it is not difficult to resolve the issue of a return or compensation for damage.
If a dent is found on the mattress when the period of use is less than the warranty period, the user has the right to file a claim with the manufacturer. But the existence of a marriage must be proven. What to do:
- place the mattress on the floor or other as level surface as possible;
- put a ruler next to a clearly visible dip;
- take a picture of the defective item.
- contact the seller with a request for repair or replacement of the product, attaching a photo to it.
Note that a dip is a dent that is more than 4 cm deep. Dents caused by human body pressure will not be considered a defect.
The manufacturer has 10 days to consider the complaint, as prescribed by law. The examination must be carried out within 30 days. For a product damaged by misuse, the manufacturer may offer the purchaser a repair or refurbishment with an invoice for services.
Other problematic situations
There are other situations where the use of an expensive product is not possible.
The mattress smells
Modern mattresses have different fillings. Homogeneous "fillings" are less common, mainly complex "sandwiches", in which there are metal springs, natural coke coir, artificial latex, foams of various chemical composition. Each component has its own smell, and you get this “bouquet” along with a new mattress.
This amber cannot compete with the aroma of lilies of the valley or fresh lilac, so not all buyers like it. You will have to endure it for several days, ventilate the room more often, vacuum the product. A good result is the use of baking soda: sprinkle the mattress with a thin layer and leave for several hours, then vacuum thoroughly.
But if the smell is unbearable and interferes with a good rest, contact the seller. Most likely, he will offer to write a claim, attach copies of the documents for the mattress, a photo of the product, a sew-in label on it. In response, a representative of the factory will come to you and, relying on his sense of smell, will make an expert decision.
The hardness of the mattress did not fit
In this case, do not count on your charm, the store has every right to refuse to exchange goods of good quality. The mistake in choosing the stiffness is your mistake. To avoid it, it is best to feel the firmness of the mattress with your body by lying on it in a furniture store, in the showroom of a manufacturer or an online store.
Still wrong? It doesn't matter, talk to the seller, they will help you resolve the issue with the manufacturer and replace or rearrange the layers in your mattress, make the product softer or vice versa. You will have to pay approximately 20 - 25% of the cost of the mattress.
Wrong size
This problem is harder to deal with. It will become unsolvable when ordering a mattress of a non-standard, individual size. It is possible to return such a product only if an obvious factory defect is found.
The established standards for standard sizes are:
200, 195, 190 cm - mattress length;
200, 180, 160, 140, 120, 90, 80 cm - mattress width.
All models with other dimensions are considered non-standard.
Try not to open the mattress packaging immediately without putting it back in its place. By placing the product on the bed frame, it will become clear if you made a mistake in the measurements. With intact packaging, it is easy to change the purchase, you will need to pay for shipping and that's all.
If you open the package and see that the mattress is too big, you will have to pay not only for shipping, but also for reworking the product. Replacing a mattress with smaller dimensions than necessary will cost a pretty penny - a new product will need to be manufactured. Therefore, be careful when setting sizes, measure the bed frame with a metal tape measure. You should not focus on an old mattress, it could be significantly deformed over the years of service.
Warranty return
The warranty period specified in the mattress documents starts from the date of sale of the product. Its action extends to revealed defects of the spring block, damage to individual springs, defects in cover materials, the appearance of dents not from the human body. The presence of a specific smell is not a warranty case, as well as the manifestation of allergic reactions in the user.
Before submitting a complaint to the manufacturer, prepare the following documents:
- sales or cash receipt for the purchase, consignment note, which will confirm the fact of purchase. Manufacturers often provide their products with a barcode, which can be used to restore the release date of the product.
