Wallpaper trends 2022: Stylish ways to dress your walls

Start your search for wallpaper trends with a little insider knowledge to truly get the best out of the new collections in 2022.

Wallpaper is a key trend for 2022, and the insatiable appetite from consumers doesn’t look like abating any time soon.

Whatever your taste, there are wallpaper ideas for everyone, from traditional florals and trompe l’oeil, to contemporary geometric and tropical patterns or animal motifs and architectural designs.

Wallpaper trends 2022

The progress in new printing techniques and finishes is constantly pushing the boundaries, and the availability of new substrates makes it even more exciting.

'Gone are the days of just printing on paper. You can now embellish corks, grass-cloths and silks with pretty much any design. The usage is also bolder and braver. If you have the confidence, there are endless possibilities,' explains David Harris, Design Director at Andrew Martin.

1. Escape with a scenic wall mural

Scenic landscape wall mural ideas are the biggest story in wallpaper trends for 2022 – wonderfully atmospheric and evocative, a stunning wall mural will transform and capture the imagination.

You don’t have to put your artistic nature to the test when it comes to picture walls. There are plenty of wallpapers that are designed to do just that with trompe l’oeil illustrations that can quickly add an extra dimension even in small spaces.

A panoramic mural can not only transport you to another space (figuratively as well as literally!), but by choosing a nature-inspired design, the boundaries between indoors and out can become blurred.

For a relaxing bedroom wallpaper scheme, turn to images of escapism, like this tropical pictorial wallpaper that evokes the memory of faraway shores. Complete the look by choosing furniture, bedding and cushions in earthy ochre and a pinch of ginger for a fully immersive design.

2. Max out with full-scale pattern

(Image credit: Future / Adrian Briscoe)

Maximalism is an interior design trend that's back in a big way for 2021, and we predict that this daring look is here to stay.

In bold contrast to the understated, this living room decor idea reveals the design world’s wild side. An arresting mix of leopard prints, pleating and patchworks, together with stars, stripes and metallic hides, demonstrates that more can be more.

2. Factor in an abundance of florals

(Image credit: Emma Lewis / Soane)

Floral room decor is big news for 2022 interiors and can be adapted to suit any space, whether it’s vintage, retro or contemporary. These new season designs have upped the style stakes and make it easy to work beautiful flowers into your décor.

Start off by thinking about color. The palette you choose will guide your decisions when it comes to choosing floral designs and will act as the basis for pulling your scheme together.

When working floral prints into your home, think about the scale of the flowers in the patterns. Large prints can make small rooms appear even smaller so stick to daintier designs to create an illusion of space.

3. Take a bold approach to decorating with wallpaper

(Image credit: Simon Bevan / Future)

Color trends have also gone the same way with neutrals edging away from the gray (dare we say it) and moving more towards the warmer tones to beckon in the return of brown furniture.

Don’t be afraid to combine different patterns and color combinations.

'Mix classic designs such as stripes or florals with exotic styles such as ikats and Turkish Kilims. Avoid making the space look too busy by choosing patterns in colors that complement each other,' says Martin Waller, Founder of Andrew Martin.

4. Surround yourself with botanicals

(Image credit: Future / Polly Wreford)

Sustainability and being 'happier at home' is at the forefront of our minds for 2022, and it will only escalate further as time goes on. An increased awareness of the finitude of our natural resources has led to an increased desire to repair, repurpose and recycle.

Visible repairs are celebrated and emphasized, and durable, natural, and woven materials are championed. Bolder greens are also taking over from the midnight blue bringing in the biophilic trend of wellness through plants and foliage.

'Any reference to bringing the outside in will have an impact on wellbeing with the plant trend that just keeps on growing,' explains Maryanne Cartwright, Design Manager at Graham & Brown.

5. Go for dramatic graphics

(Image credit: Future / Paul Raeside)

This year has seen us all searching for security and structure amid the chaos. An escalating need to impose systems of order and control in all facets of life, from wellness trends to dating apps, has seen a rise in popularity for simplified, structured design.

Interiors referencing elemental geometric arrangements, subtle raised relief and monochrome palettes channel the comfort found in pattern and routine.

A turbulent environment of political and social unrest has led to a yearning for designs which reflect values of authenticity, humanity and trustworthiness.

Craftsmanship and heritage designs are celebrated and familiar natural motifs are favored, as shown on the accent wall idea above. We are more willing to invest in designs that have meaning and have been lovingly created than mass produced products.

During a period of uncertainty it is not uncommon for certain elements of nostalgia to set in as we reach for the archive when choosing our next wallpaper.

7. Create a picture-perfect scheme with wall panels

Panels are big when it comes to bedroom wallpaper ideas for 2021. It's not overly common to have paneling in a bedroom, but if you live in a period property – or got them built in to add character to a plain space – you have plenty of space to play with wallpaper.

Previously a living room trend, adding a statement paper in slices allows you to go bold with color and pattern without overwhelming the room. Choosing a natural inspired scheme and colorway keeps things calming, too.

8. Decorate with textural papers

(Image credit: Paul Massey / Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam)

Gone are the days when wallpaper was a one-dimensional piece of paper on the wall. As printing techniques develop, the number of surfaces that can be printed on increase.

One of the most comforting wallpaper trends is introducing texture to the walls. Choose a hessian wallcovering for the ultimate cosseting effect, and let the coziness commence.

9. Add charm with Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie is another wallpaper trend which has been in and out of fashion for many years. Historically associated with grand country manor homes, this technique has been modernized and updated is a fresh new way.

Characterized by fantastical oriental scenes and sinuous, stylized flower and bird motifs, the Chinoiserie trend has witnessed a surge in popularity in recent years, with today's wallpaper and fabric houses offering a wealth of ornate decorative designs to bring wow-factor to your interior design choices.

10. Add drama with dark colors

Dark colors used to be avoided, as often this would be misinterpreted as making a room seem dark and dingy.

However, with an eclectic use of space, well-placed shapes and smart living room lighting ideas like in the space shown above, deeper royal blues and luxurious emerald greens are making a desired comeback.

What are the wallpaper trends for 2022?

Scenic and mural wallpapers continue to be a popular trend for 2022. From serene painterly flowers and textures to atmospheric panoramas, scenes and murals put your walls center stage and offer a variety of extraordinary statements for your walls.

'Fine art-inspired wallpaper is having a moment with life size art murals proving popular. However, don’t blindly follow trends and above all, only choose a style if you really love it,' says Martin Waller, Founder of Andrew Martin.

step-by-step instructions with photo and video

Blinds are a universal means of protection from sunlight in the early morning or bright summer evenings. Sometimes there is simply no opportunity to purchase curtains, and making them yourself requires a lot of effort.

Blinds come to the rescue here. You can buy them at the store at a lower price or make your own with a roll of wallpaper and other materials at hand. Also, our detailed photo and video instructions will come to your aid, in which the whole process is described step by step.

Handicrafts have always been famous for their quality and originality. Manual labor is valued much higher than sophisticated innovative technologies. Without much effort, you can make your own blinds in your favorite colors, diversifying the room. Such curtains look creative and will not go unnoticed by your guests.

Wallpaper blinds have certain advantages over alternative options:

Among the disadvantages are:

Content

Varieties of paper curtains

Cut-out curtains are distinguished by their original design and mechanism. You can choose the style, make them in your own way with the addition of details. Below are the popular varieties.

Vertical blinds

Curtain strips, called slats, are arranged vertically. They turn at the right angle, are regulated by a special rope.

Horizontal blinds

Blinds are characterized by a ladder mechanism. Lamels are located across. Rise and fall with a special drum.

Roller blinds

Blinds that are rolled up by a special mechanism.

Paper roman blinds (peacock tail)

Blinds similar to horizontal blinds, with a distinctive feature - a rounded fan bottom.

What to consider when choosing wallpaper

The main factor in choosing wallpaper is your taste and expectations that you place on the functionality of curtains. Each material has its own advantages:

When you go to the wallpaper store, don't rush to the windows. Ask sellers about old unsold wallpapers in stock. They can be purchased in the same quantity much cheaper.

It is important to consider the dimensions of the window opening. The width of the wallpaper, as a rule, is found in half a meter, a meter. If the window is too large, take meter-long copies; wallpaper 50-55 cm wide will be enough for a small window.

You can take the wallpaper for painting, then you can come up with a design for the curtains yourself. Remember that light colors scatter light evenly around the room. Dark ones will create a feeling of night twilight, security and comfort.

Curtain installation options

One of the important points is the installation of curtains. There are several methods for attaching curtains to a window:

Getting started

To make your own wallpaper curtains, you will need:

When you have all the necessary tools and materials, you can start making blinds.

Step-by-step tutorials

To create high-quality, neat blinds, follow the instructions step by step, take your time, be especially careful in measurements.

The advantage of homemade curtains is the lack of work with drawings.

Each of the varieties has manufacturing features and requires an individual approach. Therefore, decide in advance which curtains you would like to see on the windows.

Accordion Blinds

To make a blind with accordion slat wallpaper:

  1. Measure the length and breadth of the window. Add to the length of your curtains a quarter of the material from the length of the window. Otherwise, when bent with an accordion, the curtains will be a quarter shorter.
  2. Carefully measure the length of the rope to match the length of the curtain.
  3. Create a pleated look. To do this, measure the stripes (better if they are from 3 to 5 cm, then the blinds will look elegant and neat. ). Make sure that the lamellas are the same shape. Bend them into an accordion shape.
  4. If you want to thread the rope along the curtain, make a row of holes in the middle of the curtain with an awl, insert the cord. You can thread two laces, making a hole on the sides.
  5. Attach the top end of the cord by tying a knot or tape. If you used two cords, connect them with a clip, placing a bead on the end or tying a knot.

To make the blinds more spacious, you can increase the width of the slats. So the blinds will look massive and stylish.

Roller blind

In this version you will need a tube to hold the curtains. It is best to make blinds from non-woven wallpaper. For the manufacture of roller blinds, use the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Attach double-sided tape along the entire length of the tube.
  2. Fix the inner part of the curtain to the pipe. Screw the canvas onto the pipe to the very end. Try to roll the wallpaper very tightly.
  3. Bend the lower end of the blade approx. 5-10 mm, depending on the weight width. Pass the weighting bar into the resulting groove. Use a weight exactly the width of the blind.
  4. Insert the blind adjuster into the tube. Fix the mechanism with a rope or chain at the top of the window. Use double-sided tape or self-tapping screws for this. Or, as shown in the picture, attach the hooks to the top of the curtain by threading the cords through them.

Fan Blinds include steps similar to the manufacture of accordion blinds. The difference lies in the rounded end of the curtain, reminiscent of a peacock's tail. To make curtains, follow the instructions:

  1. Measure the window, prepare the wallpaper by adding 1/4 of the material to the blinds along the length of the window and the rope along the straightened curtain.
  2. Measure the stripes, create the slats by folding the curtain like an accordion.
  3. Thread one or more cords through the pre-drilled holes with an awl, securing them in a convenient manner.
  4. To create this fan, use double-sided tape, glue or a clothespin, sticking the two ends together, bending the curtain in the middle.

Paper clip curtains

Paper clip curtains can be made from different threads, leftover wallpaper, magazines, old postcards, corrugated paper.

This type of curtain looks very original and catchy, due to sparkling paper clips. The curtain is considered a good idea for a summer house and a garden because of the ease and convenience with which it moves back.

Its production is as follows:

  1. Cut strips of paper the width of 1 staple length minus 2-3 mm, the length of the staple width times 4.
  2. Fold the paper clip in half, fold the ends towards the middle. If you want to make the curtain more voluminous, increase the length of the paper several times.
  3. Pass the paperclip through the two "pockets" formed from the folded corners, hook the second paperclip, continue to weave the thread to the desired length. After receiving the first row, you can decide how many staples you need per thread.
  4. Finished threads are fixed in the doorway by any convenient method.

A creative solution would be to attach the threads to some kind of wooden stick. Thread can be used instead of paper. To keep the curtain beautiful and sparkling for a long time, you can cover it with a glossy varnish.

The author's imagination in this production option is not limited.

Decoration of finished blinds

The main thing in decorating curtains is a play of the imagination, a flight of fancy. You can use various beads, rhinestones, ribbons, colorful pencils and sparkles.

It will be interesting to create a curtain from photo wallpaper and attach it outside the opening. Then there will always be a beautiful view outside your window.

Lace patches and painted flowers make the blinds delicate and delicate. This design will fit into a rococo room.

The best way to decorate curtains is with the whole family. This activity will bring together, help develop imagination and creativity. And the blinds will become a memorable exhibit in the museum of comfort.

Paper curtains are easy to make, fast enough to make but look nice and are inexpensive. They will be an ideal option for those who often move or like variety in the interior.

Do-it-yourself wallpaper blinds. Step-by-step instructions

The ability to make something with one's own hands warms the heart of a diligent housewife, saves money, and also protects from the sun's rays in winter and summer. Of course, if it's "something" - paper blinds. Despite the fact that few have heard of them, their scope is very large: windows of cottages, verandas, balconies, loggias, rooms located on the sunny side, children's rooms. They are hung during repairs so as not to stain the curtains, and they are also a great option for those who do not yet have enough money to purchase ordinary blinds. Such curtains look very original, and the money and time costs for them are minimal. It will not work to advise you to start making them on long winter evenings, because everyone can make such blinds from wallpaper with their own hands in just a couple of hours.

To do this, you only need the following materials and tools: wallpaper residues, scissors, hole punch / awl, ruler, meter, pencil, cord / satin ribbon to match the wallpaper, fixative, double-sided and ordinary tape, glue. It is better to choose wallpapers that are dense enough (non-woven wallpaper is suitable for painting), but transmits light, not too dark shades, without large patterns and not too colorful.

Contents:

1. Measure the width and length of the glass to which the blinds will be attached.

2. 25% is added to the resulting length value, and the width remains unchanged. These are the dimensions of the blinds. Extra centimeters will go away when bending the wallpaper with an accordion. The length of the ribbon / cord is taken with an allowance for tying bows, knots.

3. A rectangle of the specified parameters is cut out of the remaining piece of rolled wallpaper. If the wallpaper is patterned or striped, make sure that the pattern is not skewed.

4. Fold the wallpaper like an accordion, and the folds should be within 3-5 cm, otherwise the appearance will deteriorate sharply. If everything is done correctly, then the end of one side will look like the letter “L” (this is the bottom of the curtain), and the other side will get only half - “/”.

5. On the folded harmonica, we determine the middle, in the place of which we make holes with a hole punch. This useful tool is most often available only at the workplace, but at home it will be quite successfully replaced by an awl or a screwdriver. We fix the resulting holes in the wallpaper from the back with tape, then we punch the holes again. If these blinds are needed for a short time, you can not do this.

6. Insert a cord or ribbon into the resulting gap, and then straighten the blinds to determine the length of the rope. In this case, the upper end of the cord is fixed with a knot.

7. Glue double-sided adhesive tape along the entire width of the upper step of the curtain, at the same time additionally fixing the cord. This will be the window mount. On the lowest strip, at the bottom left, a piece of a little less than half is glued so that you can decorate the curtains.

8. The bottom is decorated with a "peacock tail". To do this, 5 lower folds are glued together, and then fastened with double-sided tape.
