So if you don't have a separate room with a door you can close at 5.30pm, it's time to get creative with your home office ideas. But stylishly – and these hidden desk ideas are H&G's favorite ways to do so.

This extraordinarily clever idea by Thomas Griem's London-based TG Studio shows how work can be carried out in the smallest of spaces if you're creative. This built-in, slide out desk surface offers plenty of work surface space and storage beneath, with very little impact on the floor space. 

'You don't need a lot of space,' says George Saumarez Smith, partner at ADAM Architecture in London. 'My office is 2.9m x 1.8m, and is a kind of nerve center for work. It stops work taking over the home.'

This hidden desk space was created by Melissa Hamilton of Chelsea-based Studio Indigo . 'For this scheme, we wanted to create a private study for the owner of the house,' says Melissa, who chose a warm, neutral wall color to set off the deep, rich shades of the furniture. 'It takes the form of a delicately hand-painted chinoiserie bureau in the master bedroom suite...[a] much loved antique found on [the owners'] travels.'

Although only used for correspondence, it's easy to appreciate how much storage there is available to hold everything needed for a small home office. Melissa is also at pains to point out that when a study area is included in another space, such as a bedroom, it is crucial to factor in how it will impact the wider scheme. 'Even when this desk is not in use, it is a very aesthetically pleasing arrangement,' she says.

If your existing office is part of an open plan layout and you simply can’t get the peace and quiet you desire, then consider closing off the end you are working in with doors.

Have a look around your home with fresh eyes – where is there spare space that you had previously dismissed as unsuitable, perhaps because it had no natural light? It may even currently be an enclosed cupboard with a stud wall that you can remove – or the back half of a long kitchen/diner and living space.

Rather than setting up the space as desk only, go broken plan, with glazed interior walls – and door – that allow natural light in, but keep noise from others out. 

For this homework station, architect Chantal Michelin of Flower Michelin natural light was borrowed from a glazed extension. This smart space includes a desk that slides in to allow access to the cupboards below, thereby increasing storage possibilities. Plugs, the router and cabling are all hidden within the cupboards, along with a small printer. 

9. Pick mirrored furniture to make your desk disappear

You've heard the phrase 'smoke and mirrors' and that is precisely the trick you can resort to if you are hiding a desk in a bedroom. 

Elegant mirrored furniture, kept tidy and used carefully, will look beautiful, enhance your bedroom and won't take up visual space where you either want to disguise a study area – or in a small home office that relies on as much clever furnishing as possible.

10. Invest in a purpose-built, standalone home office

How can I hide a desk in my living room?

Desks can be hidden in living rooms in a number of ways. The least obvious way to hide a desk is by placing it behind another piece of furniture, such as at the back of a sofa – this work particularly well in open plan spaces. Another option is to put a desk into a living room alcove – within an armoire is the best way to hide it but choose one with a light finish to ensure it doesn't look bulky. You can also hide a desk in a living room by using a screen to pull across it when not in use.

How to hide the wires in the office to make it nice and comfortable

Electrical cables often get tangled underfoot and spoil the look of the room. In Kontur, this problem was solved at the design stage. Alexey Makhno, corporate architect of Kontur, tells how it was possible to remove all wires from sight in the new office of an IT company.

Problem #1: Making outlets mobile

When hidden wiring is in the walls, the desks of employees cannot be rearranged, their location is rigidly tied to the electrical outlets in the walls. In the new office, they decided to make sockets mobile. The main connections were placed in the floor, and the floor itself became modular. nine0007

What was done:

The open space floor now consists of square slabs supported by legs up to 12 cm high. Between the tiles and the base is a space where electrics, optical cables, and at the same time heating pipes are laid.

Removable cassettes were installed in key places, sockets were installed in them, they are closed with hatches.

A carpet was glued on top of the floor, but not rolled, but tiled, to match the size of the raised floor slabs.

A minimum of outlets were left in the walls: switches and sockets for additional equipment, as well as wall-mounted charging stations for smartphones.

If relocation is required, the floor does not need to be opened to reposition the connections. It is enough to lift the floor covering and rearrange the cassette with leads to another cell.

Problem #2: How to hide the wires under the desks of employees

The bundles of wires that went to computers, monitors and other equipment on the tables looked messy. It was decided to put them in cable channels.

What was done:

Boxes of cable channels were screwed onto the metal frame of the table base under the tabletops. Hatches for wires were drilled in the tables themselves.

Problem #3: How to place wires


in a meeting room

This is a representative space, it should be stylish but comfortable: with outlets for equipment in a large conference table.

What was done:

The arrangement in meeting rooms is almost always the same: a long table in the center, a large screen on the wall. The arrangement will not change, so the electrical and Internet cables were placed in a screed - this is cheaper than a modular floor. nine0007

In pre-planned places under the table, hatches are made. They tried to choose places for them so that the cables were not visible from the outside, and the people sitting at the table did not touch them with their feet. From there, through the cable channels, the wires go to the sockets in the table.

Problem No. 4. How to hide communications in the ceiling,


but leave access to them

Ventilation and lighting channels were originally laid in the ceilings. It remained to decide how to close them or fit them into the overall design.

Plasterboard suspended ceilings were abandoned as uncomfortable. Access to the maintenance of communications in this case would be difficult, it would be difficult to move the lamps: it would be necessary to dismantle the old drywall sheets and re-cut the holes.

What was done:

Metal mesh panels that hide communications on the ceiling

We found a compromise solution: a suspended metal frame on which the mesh panels are fixed. Lamps, wires and ventilation pipes were hidden behind them.

It turned out that communications are both hidden and open at the same time. This is convenient: when you need access for maintenance or want to change the lighting scheme, one or more panels are simply removed, then they snap back into place. nine0007

The light is softer and easier on the eyes: the metal mesh of the panels acts as a diffuser. Plus they look futuristic.

Problem No. 5. How to put a lot of household appliances


in the office kitchen

There are a lot of appliances in the kitchen: microwave ovens, dishwasher, refrigerator, toasters, coffee makers. They also decided to hide the wires from them out of sight, so as not to turn the resting place into a system administrator's pantry.

What we did:

Large appliances in the kitchen - built-in. Small: toasters, kettles, coffee makers - connected through the hatches in the countertop. The wires from them go to the sockets in the wall along vertical cable channels mounted at the back of the tables with drawers. It was not necessary to make custom-made furniture for this: there is a gap between the drawers and the back wall of the kitchen cabinet, in which the wires fit perfectly. nine0007

Problem #6: How to connect common equipment


in the conference room

This room has special requirements. It is multifunctional: today there is a corporate party with a dance floor, tomorrow there is a lecture, then there is an event with a video broadcast from the studio, which is collected here.

The hall has amplifiers, mixing consoles, studio lighting, stage lighting and more. They consume more power than typical office equipment.

What they did:

The electrical wiring was done in the floor, in the screed, the load for raised floors would be too serious. The hatches had to be strictly where the equipment would be placed. All rearrangements and conclusions of communications were thought out in advance, included in the terms of reference for designers, and then calculated and agreed in the project of the premises - even before construction. nine0007

Problem No. 7. How to avoid leaving


employees without electricity on the street

The headquarters has a courtyard and a small park with a pond. They decided to organize jobs in the fresh air.

What we did:

In the fresh air, tables were set up for concentrated work alone, benches and sunbeds, where you can work with a laptop even while reclining. They put gazebos with protection from the bright sun. Electricity was provided to street workplaces, laying cables in protective pipes under street paths and placing moisture-proof sockets near tables and benches.

We also made closed conference rooms - framed, with glass facades. They were originally designed for summer, only with floor-mounted radiators that kept the temperature down to +5°C to keep the finish in the cold season. But in winter, there were not enough meeting rooms in the building, so they decided to use the street ones. Infra-red ceiling heaters were hung in them, the wires from them were led out through cable channels to the existing hidden sockets. nine0007

They did not open the finish and build the cable channel into the frame: they took a thin channel in a black case, to match the color of the walls, and disguised it between the wooden slats of the finish. In addition, floor electric convectors were installed to raise the temperature in the meeting rooms above +20 °C.

If the ribbon is completely hidden and no tabs are shown, it is probably set to auto-hide. Press button in the upper right corner of the screen. This will temporarily restore the tape.

When you click on a document sheet, the ribbon will be hidden again. To display the ribbon, select one of the above display options.

nine0006 If necessary, you can collapse the ribbon to make room for the document you are creating. To collapse the ribbon, click the "Collapse Ribbon Arrow " button in the upper right corner.

To see the ribbon again, click the arrow again.
